If it's a full port of mpg123, it should play any MP2 or MP3 audio.

Well, yeah, but most people I've talked to, including a lot of Mac
programming experts with experience in the field, have said the 68040's FPU
- let alone an FPU-less '020-based Mac - is far too weak to decode MP3s on
the fly, in real time.

There is just no way an 020 (meaning a Mac II or LC)
is going to play MP3 in realtime. Even if it is
super optimized a IIci with a 50Mhz DayStar 030
is going to struggle.

I dunno, there's a chance this will work good. Mpg123 has a patch that makes
it use all integer math. It was developed for the Acorn RISC chips, but
works on all platforms. This is also an open-source program that has been
under constant development for years. I'm not kidding, years. I always
thought if there was going to be one MP3 player for m68k, it would be a port
of mpg123.

Now that I think about it, you can play MP3s on a 486. Not
particularly well, but a 486/100 will do it real-time.

I've hit a brick wall on the 475. mpg123 crashes out due to a lack of
FPU (At least that's what it says) and all of my Quadras have
LC040's. Doh.

The only way I ever got a 486 class PC to play MP3
was to use the AMD 5x86 on a 40Mhz bus so it was
running at 160Mhz. The version of WinAMP available
at the time had an option to cut the playback
quality to 22Khz and downmix stereo to mono. Even
at that it would only play without skipping if
WinAMP was the only thing running.

An MP3 player for an 040 is going to have to be
tons more efficient than WinAMP ever was to play
MP3 with realtime decoding. I'm certain it won't
do 44khz playback even on an 840AV. There might
be a possibility of 44Khz stereo if the player
app used the AV's DSP. But I'll for darn sure bet
that it couldn't do anything but play MP3, just like
my hotted up old 486. ;)

Like I said, not particularly well. :) But I'm fairly sure I was able
to squeeze a full quality MP3 out of that poor old 486/100. Just as
long as you didn't, say, use the mouse or access the hard drive. I'm
sure if you ran DOSAmp (or damp, xmms, etc) or something, it wouldn't
be a problem.

Darn, I was looking forward to listening to some tunes while doing a

render in the background on my Centris. :P

SoundApp claims to be able to do it. I've tried it on my 030->040 (upgraded

I'll post my results when I get it to unstuff.

Forget it. SoundApp doesn't claim to run mp3's on 68k Macs. It isn't
able to do that. It is however able to convert mp3's to aiff's on 68k

Re: play mp3's on 020 or up Macs

2001-09-07 Thread macdrivers

So I gave the program a spin on my Q630 that acts as a headless MP3 file
server on my LAN. At first I couldn't get the file to unstuff on the Q630,
probably due to the older stuffit expander on the machine. So I mounted the
Q630 hd on my iMac and unstuffed it on the iMac.

I control the Q630 via timubktu as it is headless and I pared down the
extension set on it. And the verdict is

Well kinda, sorta...I initially tried playing a 192kbps U2 With or Without
you and it played but heavily stuttered (like a motorcycle) and it took
about twice as long to play as the length of the song.

I then tried playing a 56kps song which was still stuttered but was almost
decent.

What I haven't tried yet is to turn off Appletalk on the Q630 and put a
monitor/keyboard on the machine and disable timbuktu. I bet that would
improve the playback. I'll give this a shot over the weekend.

Sure the interface is crude, but the effort put into this is impressive.

play MP3, wouldn't show them in the file open
