The early models did have a fan.  Then they started having problems 
not reading the disk.  Turns out the fan was sucking in dust which 
fouled the laser.  Apple's initial fix:  disconnect the fan.  It 
turns out it wasn't really needed (not that hot) and certainly caused 
problems.  So obviously they removed the fan entirely in later 
versions.

Take it apart and see if you can get some lubricant into it.

why not disconnect the second board and wire that direct to the new 
cdrom?  that should be only 5 soldier points.  8 if you have a 
volume control
You overestimate me, I am not much of a repair man. Anyway, one of 
these days I will bump into a working one.
