RE: Is there any accessory that you can buy that will work with iPhone 4 s and iPod touch 4 to give it an FM tuner?

2012-05-29 Thread Anthony Vece
Motorola had such an accessory years ago.

It was a pair of earphones that worked in conjunction with there high end
cell phones in the late 90's.

But, you'd be hard pressed to find something like that today.

Hi,

I had a friend sometime ago who had an old iPod 3rd generation nano and they
had a little remote that plugged into the bottom of the iPod and by
attaching headphones, they had an FM tuner on ther iPod.

Does anyone know of such a thing that would work with the iPhone 4 s and the

I want to be able to listen to local radio on both these devices but when
you're on a bus you don't always have wifi.

Any help would be appreciated.

Re: typing on the phone

2012-05-29 Thread Tracy
I agree with Carol and Chris.

Support for other braille systems would be great, and it would be nice to be
able to use contractions.

I've also been a braillist for many years, and I love the app, but because I'm
not used to the way the punctuation is formed, it puts me off a little.

Thank you for the great work you are doing.

I find it a good and useful app though don't get around to using it too
often. I do find the punctuation doesn't come naturally and that's one main
reason why I don't use it more.

Having been a Braillist for getting on for 60 years, it's also hard to think
in a different concept for writing and I'd therefore still prefer to write with
two hands in a normal way.

All this said, remember I do like the app very much and commend you on your

Let me suggest an experiment: on the basis it might, or even ought to
know

functions is the ability to email what you've written to yourself. The
problem is when I choose the email option and enter my email address,
the text ends up in the subject line of the email rather than in the

I can't figure out what I'm missing. Can anyone help?

Hi, forgive me if I've misspelled the name of this app. It would appear
you
can edit Word documents. Is that true? I'm looking for something that can
synchronize with Dropbox, and while I've found several editors for text
format, I want to find something that will work with Doc and DocX since
reading by paragraph is smoother with VoiceOver using those file formats.
Thanks for any recommendations you can pass along.--Joe

Re: A question about Draftpad

2012-05-29 Thread Kimber Gardner
Do you mean in the to field?

When I open draftpad and write something, there's
an action button that presents a menu that includes clear all text,
copy text, email, sms and maybe something else, I can't recall at the
moment. If I click the email option, I am presented with a to field, a
cc field and a message body.

I got the subject to go into the subject field of the email by doing
what Jane suggested and writing the subject followed by two returns
then the body of the email.

All in all, I would say it's a nice little editor and very accessible.

Just curious. Does this application work also for the browser, or just
texting and such. My issue isn't so much with texts, as I'm not a huge

Thanks.

One question for you split tappers, any tips for when
to switch the
duties of fingers? Do you have certain letter combos,
certain words,
etc where you just know you're tapper will become the
hunter? Just
having sent a couple texts with the split tap method,
that's the only
thing that seemed odd.

I've learned much from this typing discussion.
Initially, I loved the
touch typing method, but it seems to me that iOS has
gotten less responsive, even across hardware, than I
remember it being when I got
my first iOS device most of two years ago. It may just
be my
expectations, but I remember touch typing faster, and
more accurately,
when I got that device than I can now. Prompted by this
thread, I'm
trying out the split tap method and am quite intrigued.

I usually type with my thumbs, but sometimes with my

finger. I became accustomed to typing with my thumbs
while using a querty keyboard on an android. I have
used a home row on a computer since age nine, so
learning to locate keys with my thumbs was not too

Re: Ipad Gestures

2012-05-29 Thread Garth Humphreys
Hi

You may want to enable containers in the rotor, I am not sure if it will help
much but if you want to use gestures to move around the screen then this will
at least expand your options. I can't remember if it is enabled by default.
Whilst in your mail, use the rotor gesture and see if containers is an option.
If it is then great, experiment with it. If not, go into your accessibility
settings and into VO then go to the rotor settings and add containers. Oh by
the way, containers lets you jump between the major sections of the screen with
a single finger swipe down/up.
Personally though I use a similar method as already described by the others.
With the iPad, it is really worth some time in exploring exactly where on the
screen each thing is and then just touch the screen there to move focus.

I will sometimes swipe between the move, delete and reply buttons in the mail
app but otherwise I prefer to look for what I want by dragging.

Hope this helps.

Re: Ipad Gestures

2012-05-29 Thread Peter Lane
Hi Kerry,
Since the iPad screen is a bit larger, it's easier for me to learn the layout
of the Email screen, locate the Email and then use the 2 finger swipe down to
read. Then find where the Delete, Reply or Move buttons are by touching the
screen. Moving around the mail screen is difficult with jestures. It's a bit
faster with a BT keyboard, but only a little. Pete

Let me suggest an experiment: on the basis it might, or even ought to know

Subject: TextFree seems to be a good app

I just thought I'd share my experience so far with TextFree here. I had
used it a few years ago and let it expire, but I had reason to go back to it
yesterday actually because of texting a lot with someone on an IPod touch
that doesn't have and doesn't seem to want to upgrade to IOS 5.x with
IMessage in it. So this app is nicely accessible and has the added benefits
of being able to make and receive calls and voicemail now. One nice benefit
is you can get what if you want it to can be a completely free additional
local phone number. You could pick another area code too if you wanted. That
can give a number to put in things or give out where you would prefer not to
give your actual cell number and if things go for any reason how you don't
want them to with that number, just let it expire. That's just a thought and
there are other ways to do that as well though. The HD quality calling is
quite nice too. The texting is always free and the calling gives you like 20
minutes a month outgoing and all incoming free. To buy a hundred minutes
more is $1.99. To get rid of the ads for a year is $5.00. What it didn't
have before when I used it a few years ago was the way to buy more minutes.
Definitely useful to have the app.

The only problem with this method is that your SIM card may not hold all of
your contacts, all of the information in each contact or all of the
formatting information contained in your contacts. This is what I did though
to get started right away.

I'm now looking at getting all of the information in my contacts on my E71X
over to my iPhone. Another thing that seems to work is to export all of your
contacts on your Nokia phone to VCF files. You can then mail these VCF files
to yourself as attachments and then open them up on your iPhone. You'll then
have the choice to create new contacts or add the information to existing
contacts. This may still be more labor intensive than some other options,
but it appears to work and be an option.

There is one that will help you memorize the code, but it can't test you on
it, nor does it give the usage rules, of which there are many.
Braille Reference, $0.99 has the American braille code plus computer
braille.

You should sign up for Hadley if you don't have a local option for learning
braille tactilely.

You need to put the subject of the email on the first line. Then hit enter

A question about Draftpad

2012-05-29 Thread Kimber Gardner
Hi All,

I recently downloaded a text editing app called Draftpad. One of the
functions is the ability to email what you've written to yourself. The
problem is when I choose the email option and enter my email address,
the text ends up in the subject line of the email rather than in the
body.

I can't figure out what I'm missing. Can anyone help?

Thanks,
Kimber

Re: Apps to learn Braille was Re: typing on the phone

2012-05-29 Thread Marianne Denning
Chris, you would need a way to learn to read it tactually which would
require a braille display. I also find when I use any type of
electronic braille format there are problems with the rules of
contracted braille. Braille is easy when you learn braille letter for
print letter. It becomes more challenging when you learn the
contractions and the rules related to when you can use any
contraction. There are 189 contractions in American Braille.

2012-05-29 Thread Rob Harris
Well, I have mine in landscape, I use both thumbs and slide left thunb down
the message list, use the right thumb to do a split tap on one of them, then
use the right thumb alone in the middle of the right pane where the body of
the current message is and read it like that until I've had enough, then
revert to left thumb down the message list again and so on.
The top-left corner hold the bak button if you want to go to look at other
accounts or mail folders.

The app I think you are talking about is not accessible.
The only marginally accessible app that will allow you to edit Word
documents is Pages.
It is only marginally accessible in my experience. Not worth the $9.99

reading by paragraph is smoother with VoiceOver using those file formats.

I usually type with my thumbs, but sometimes with my right index
finger. I became accustomed to typing with my thumbs while using a
querty keyboard on an android. I have used a home row on a computer
since age nine, so learning to locate keys with my thumbs was not too
hard. I am not very fast, but it works. I have a bluetooth keyboard

I want to thank you all for your patience and suggestions to get me started on
FB via the use of Voicebook. I feel comfortable now but see that Voicebook is

I downloaded Downcast last night and am beyond satisfied. It found every
podcast show I threw at it, which is great because I thought I'd have to sit
there and manually enter the URLS for the shows I follow. The sound effects
seem like a small thing, but it's an added bonus to keep tabs on different

Both work well. Downcast is slightly more complex but has more options,
e.g., you can import MP3's, and there's more choice with speed control.

Enjoy!

One question for you split tappers, any tips for when to switch the
duties of fingers? Do you have certain letter combos, certain words,
etc where you just know you're tapper will become the hunter? Just
having sent a couple texts with the split tap method, that's the only
 thing that seemed odd.

I've learned much from this typing discussion. Initially, I loved the
touch typing method, but it seems to me that iOS has gotten less
responsive, even across hardware, than I remember it being when I got
my first iOS device most of two years ago. It may just be my
expectations, but I remember touch typing faster, and more accurately,
when I got that device than I can now. Prompted by this thread, I'm
trying out the split tap method and am quite intrigued.

Seems like there would be easier ways to learn Braille than by forming each
letter one row at a time. It may be worth a try though. Good luck.

True!... I could see pretty well when at blind school, so didn't really get
on with touch reading, so didn't get past reading my bank statement. It was
important and enough; now it's all phone and online of course.

But remember it well enough to rattle away merrily with this app and get
things done with a degree of efficiency I didn't have before.

Garth, learning to tactually read braille is the critical piece and
this won't do that. I have been a rehabilitation teacher and am
currently a teacher of students who are visually impaired. If you
will commit the time to learn braille you will be pleased even if you
use it on a limited basis. You may or may not read novels using
braille but there are many other daily uses of braille.

Well, it does have the basic instructions, which includes all the symbols to
make the letters, and the few odd punctuation marks enough to do the
commonest tasks like urls, email addresses and basic messages. I think all
that is online too in fact.

Those that started this, tended to like it. It's not that many weeks ago it

Hello all is textfree available in the UK? My guess is no because I took
a look, but if you could have a look as well and tell me exactly what it
is and or who makes it this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

nice too. The texting is always free and the calling gives you like 20

it didn't have before when I used it a few years ago was the way to
buy more minutes. Definitely useful to have the app.

Wow sounds good! Been looking for alternatives. I have Whatsapp
Messenger but doesn't allow calling. I tried another one but frankly it
wasn't accessible once I completed sign up. So will give text free a
shot. I also know of people who for example have an iPhone 3GS and so
does not have Facetime. Ok I have 600 any UK network minutes a month but
the idea of HD quality calls sound amazing. Again will give this a shot.

Re: typing on the phone

Garth, learning to tactually read braille is the critical piece and
this won't do that. I have been a rehabilitation teacher and am
currently a teacher of students who are visually impaired. If you
will commit the time to learn braille you will be pleased even if you
use it on a limited basis. You may or may not read novels using
braille but there are many other daily uses of braille.

Yes they are, they do have some extraneous text. Such as "settings 42"
etc. you should be able to make sense of them. You can always label them.

Hi,

You need to open the Accounts screen, then at the bottom of that screen,
there are buttons labeled "Green download" and "green WiFi"Both options
will let you import your bank transactions.

For further information see the user guide found under settings in the
app, or download it from their web site.

Hi. I'm not sure if this has been mentioned on this list before and
i invite you to crosspost this to any other lists you might think
appropriate.
The clearcheckbook web site and iPhone app is very accessible. You
can enter transactions and can even see a running balance if you
have their premium service for $42 per year.
There are lots of options including setting recurring transactions
and reminders and running reports.
This is quite a nice program for those of us who need an accessible
checkbook program and the iPhone app just makes it better.

This is a very nice app, however it would be nice if multiple Braille
codes were supported, such as American and UK English, maybe UEB as
well. Support for grade 2 would help significantly as it means less
typing of course. Otherwise I love the app and use it indispensably.

having sent a couple texts with the split tap method, that's the only
thing that seemed odd.

I have a bluetooth keyboard
for longer typing needs.

2012-05-29 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
Hi, I think the idea sounds good. I haven't purchased this app as yet
because I have an iPhone 4S and usually do my typing via dictation, but
I can see where this may come in handy in areas where you don't want to
speak what you type. I'll check out the site and see what else there is
to learn about the app. Thanks for your efforts.

Both work well. Downcast is slightly more complex but has more options, e.g.,
you can import MP3's, and there's more choice with speed control.

Ok, a good number of those are here too; but not all, so worth a try.

Re: YouVersion Question

2012-05-29 Thread Carol Pearson

Hi Sarah,

Sorry, haven't time to give detailed instructions now ... but I think you'll
catch on if I start you off:

1)Double Tap each verse you want to include;
2Locate a rather small button on the bottom right edge which says
"Action".

From there you follow your nose and it's necessary to swipe all the way to

the left to get a feel of what you can do there ...

Any more questions when you've played a little, do come back and I'll do my
best to give some more detailed explanations if I can.

"Training" is almost an excessive word given the simplicity of the app, but
practice is certainly the key. It comes quite naturally to a previous or
current braillist. It's decades since I used a Perkins, but it came back and
had it in a couple of days, and wouldn't want to go back.

Re: typing on the phone

2012-05-29 Thread Rob Harris
Yes, you get good at it and with practice, it is quicker and more reliable
than groping all over the virtual keyboard on the screen. Good in noisy
environments when you can't hear the feedback of what you're touching on
screen. It's not quite a real keyboard, but it offers that kind of
assurance of you know what you're doing without having to be prompted or
confirmed every step of the way. That's the real benefit. I think the 3
modes you switch on the rotor would be a great advance on all edit fields to
be honest, but that's asking too much. But, and I do do this, do the
writing in TIB, copy to clipboard as a basic option, then go to the real app
and paste straight into the field.
It has basics already like sms, email, twitter and facebook; and just use
the clipboard feature after that.

I started off a bit cynical, but some of the greatest advocates started
there too.

I'd like to hear from people who are using this app. I was intrigued
when I read the description, but after listening to the demo,my
initial impression is that it's a rather labor-intensive way of
inputting text.

Anyone have any real-world feedback to share?

Re: typing on the phone

2012-05-29 Thread Rob Harris
Love it! This is an old 3GS, but it does what is necessary. I'd like all
editors to have that 3 mode system and they'd all be good, but they
haven't. suggest buttons for changing mode as my device gets confused
between which rotor it is responding to. Ok, you could put it in the menu
evenand I'm just off to check that you didn't already and I missed
it!

Ok, it's not in there, and I also note that the bak button, though in the
normal place at the top, doesn't respond to the scrub gesture for going back
directly and swiping back to the top... gets irritating, but just
remembered the 4 finger thing to go directly to the top or bottom, so we can
skip that issue. But the scrub would help.

So it's only the rotor that bugs me or my device a bit, and I'm sure that
can be fixed with specific gestures or arranging an alternative means of
changing mode.

But still love it for the efficiency, and it is you know; and gets things
done with much less groping about.

Bet you could use some of the stray unused hcaracters too even.

Many thanks, and it is appreciated.

RobH.

I'd like to hear from people who are using this app. I was intrigued
when I read the description, but after listening to the demo,my
initial impression is that it's a rather labor-intensive way of
inputting text.

Anyone have any real-world feedback to share?

Re: CD barcode scanning app

2012-05-29 Thread EWTEch Accessibility
Hi Phil,
with AudioLabels you can scan every barcode and receive information about
it. It also works with CDs and it also give you the possibility to ask for
personal QR codes via email in which you can add your own text or audio
description.

For more information about it:

We appreciate any comment or suggestion.

Thank you
