Title: [Maccessibility] From Marco Zehe: An overview of accessible app.net clients
Maccessibility has posted a new item, 'From Marco Zehe: An overview of accessible app.net clients'

In this blog post, I will cover accessible clients for the app.net service, ordered by platform. It will be updated with new information as I become aware of it. I will also mention some apps in each platform’s “Other” section that I’ve tried and not found accessible, or which have problems severe enough [...]

I tried just now to find sportstab in the app store and came up empty. I wonder

You might look at SportsTab. It lets you pick the teams you want to
follow, including all games, for a variety of types of sports.

Either you're using the mini-player or you just need to hit F6 until
it brings you to the sources list. I know you hit control + shift + M
to go in mini-player mode so I'm not sure if doing the same brings you
back. If not, I'd just do a google search on switching from iTunes
mini-player and that should give you an idea on how to fix the
problem.

Hope this helps!

Re: Music app not always in app switcher

2012-11-13 Thread Christopher Chaltain
Sorry if everyone already knows this, but it was new to me. If you're in
the Music app, and you double tap the home button, then you won't see
the music app in the App Switcher. You need to single tap it once to get
back to the home page and then double tap the home button to bring up
the App Switcher. You should then see the Music app, assuming it's still
running.

RE: iphone controled thermostats

2012-11-13 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hello,

I had power failures since I installed my thermostats and they always
reconnected automatically. The Radio Thermostat does use 4 Double A
batteries as backup so if the power goes the thermostat will stay on and
once the power comes back and your router boots up again it will reconnect
automatically.

Anyhow, even if it didn't, it's not like you can control anything if you
don't have one, so if all you have is a regular thermostat or even one that
talks, you can't control your heat or air conditioning remotely at all.

Regards,
Sieghard

I'm pretty sure Control-M is the command to get into or out of the mini player.
That should get you back to the full iTunes view.

Hi all.
I am wondering is exist a app, or any way to do this.
I need to do this effect. I need that every sound that comes by the phone
microphone, goes out by the phone speacker, like the regular microphones
does. My intention is if I have my iPhone connected via a bluetooth to a
music receiver, I can use my phone like a microphone. Is possible to do
it, or exist any app that can does it?

Subject: What In The World . . .

Folks, I've just experienced a very strange phenomenon with iTunes.
When I attempt to go into the iTunes application on my Windows PC all I
seem to access is the Previous, Play/Pause, Next, Volume Slide and Full
Volume buttons. There's nothing at all so far as JAWS can tell. This is
a very recent development.

Has anybody else ever experience this?

How did I get into this fix?

What can I do to get out of this fix?

Incidentally, I went to the Apple web site to fetch another copy of the
iTunes setup program. I first used this setup program to attempt to
repair iTunes -- no good. I then used the setup module to first remove
and then re-install iTunes -- again, no good.

(3 fingers sticking up above the water level) HELP!!!

I suspect I'll need to contact Apple support, but I'm totally spent right
now.

Thanks!

Repost Tonido Program And App Update Available

2012-11-13 Thread MamaPeach
I of course, as I normally do, left out a very important step when updating the
Tonido program. I have reposted the directions below.
Just so those of you who use Tonido will know, there is an update available for
the program and also for the app. It is suggested that you update the program
first. Do this by doing the following.
Log into Tonido.
Click on Tools
Click on Settings
Using Jaws, hit F6 and then find the buttons labeled General, Account, Network,
Misc, Log, and About.
Don’t click on any of these buttons.
Keep arrowing down and click on where it says Check for updates.
It will find the update. Click on Update Now.
the update will begin. This will cause the Tonido program to close itself and
then restart, but you won’t see this happening.
Then look to find where it says check for application updates. It will find
application updates so click to update them.
Then go and check the app store, you should have an update for the Tonido app,
so install it on your device.

RE: Guitar Apps?

2012-11-13 Thread Richard Turner
Rob,
Looking at bill Brown's Music for the Blind web site, his lessons cost
$35.00 each for the down loadable version.
I've listened to a couple of the cassette lessons from the National Library
Service and he is a great teacher, and probably worth the price.

Ok, yes, ideal world; have a good real human teacher... at $20 or more a
session. Good things don't come cheap. But for absolute beginners, I
reiterate Bill Brown as he does cover such basics as a blind player in the
media of a VI user; you get it all spelled out and then you get the backing

while you play the lead; and so on. CD or downloadable; so useable on
your device as podcasts. So long as you can stop, pause, rewind, and so on.

App that works like a microphone

2012-11-13 Thread Pablo Morales

Is possible to do it,
or exist any app that can does it?

Thanks

Bluetooth Ear piece

2012-11-13 Thread Jim Portillo
Howdy,

People here have been asking about a good Bluetooth ear piece for use with
the IPhone, the IPhone 5, Siri, etc. The Motorola Elite Sliver is the one
I'd recommend. Yes, it is a little expensive, but it is clear, sharp, and
you can use Siri with it by pushing a button on the actual ear piece itself.
It's pretty cool.

Motorola Elite Sliver.

I believe Amazon had it for something like $80.

Jim

RE: iphone controled thermostats

2012-11-13 Thread Joney
I have friends who use the talking ones all the time and really like them.
One of the pros of the wifi would be that you could control it away from
home where the talking one you would have to be right in front of it.
The talking one has a five year warranty and be set before you put it on
the wall. It is run by batteries so you don't lose your programming if
power is down. The others have a battery backup so same would apply.
The talking ones have everything done by voice and have the CD with them.
The one I would have to get would be $150 instead of the $139 or $99 of the
wireless.
Decisions, dictions. *smile*

Re: a dropvox recorder question

No. The only way would be to stop the recording, allow it to upload,
re-record, etc etc. Finally you would use an audio editor to merge the
files so they become one big file.

Re: Registering devices with Apple support website

2012-11-13 Thread Andrew Lamanche
Dear Kawal,

No, I did not take out Apple care for any of my i.s devices. They must have
automatically been registered in my profile associated with the iTunes store
credentials.

I've been researching this subject since I asked the question - a neurotic
thing to do - and i am beginning to understand that there is no way out. I'm
stuck with two IDs - one for iCloud and one for iTunes. My i/os devices must
have associated automatically with my iTunes store ID as soon as I started
sinking them and configuring them in iTunes.

Maybe the whole thing doesn't matter. I just have to remember which device is
registered via which ID. Hm! Not very clever but that's how it seems to be.

Re: Registering devices with Apple support website

2012-11-13 Thread Kawal Gucukoglu
Hello Andrew.

When you bought your IOS devices, did you enroll for the Apple Care? If so,
then the devices would have been registered automatically without you
connecting your phone or whatever to Itunes. When you register your product it
doesn't matter what ID you use as the phone or IOS device is tied to a serial
number rather than your Icloud ID or store ID.

If I'm wrong, please correct anyone.

Kawal.

RE: Deleting newsstand folder

Hi,

May I suggest that you simply move that folder to your last page and forget
about it. You can't delete it and you can't put it into another folder
either as far as I know.

create a folder and call it "Unused Apps" or something like that. That is

No, you can't.
If you get a sighted person to maybe try out the other method discussed
earlier, then maybe that way, but otherwise, you'll just have to bury the
newsstand app on an unfrequented homepage.

If the link wraps and doesn't work, just search on Amazon for "CT30

RE: continuing my search for a good blu tooth headset or ear piece for my IPhone

2012-11-13 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Maria and Casey,

I think asking about the best Bluetooth headset will get you many answers
and everybody will have a different opinion. Some like a single ear
earpiece, some like a stereo headset, one person seems to think the fit of
one is best while another will say that same headset falls out of his/her
ear all the time.

The fact is that if you spend $80 to $120 all headsets are good and often
offer similar features. There has been so much discussion about this on the
list that it might be best if you just take an hour or so, search the
archives for "Bluetooth headset" or "Bluetooth earpiece" and read through
the various discussions. You'll probably notice that the Jabra Supreme,
Bluetooth Q2, Jawbone ERA and a few others are the ones people talk about
most. If you only want to spend $50 you'll find another 20 options, but keep
in mind that you get what you pay for and while I read reviews on Amazon
where people say that whatever headset they reviewed had awesome sound
quality and the other party did not realize they were on a Bluetooth
headset, I can usually tell and when I had the Jawbone ERA for $130 which is
supposed to have some of the best noise cancellation and sound quality
mostly when I asked people I called they said the quality was OK, but not as
good as when I used my wired headset. The technology has been around for a
long time, but the sound does get compressed and besides that ever so small
delay you get with Voiceover when you are typing etc. it just isn't as good
as a wired headset. The $35 earpods that come with the new iPhone and even
the old earbud gives you better sound quality on a call than any Bluetooth
headset I tried and I tried a few.

Sieghard

Re: Guitar Apps?

2012-11-13 Thread Rob Harris
Ok, yes, ideal world; have a good real human teacher... at $20 or more a
session. Good things don't come cheap. But for absolute beginners, I
reiterate Bill Brown as he does cover such basics as a blind player in the
media of a VI user; you get it all spelled out and then you get the backing
while you play the lead; and so on. CD or downloadable; so useable on
your device as podcasts. So long as you can stop, pause, rewind, and so on.

I just move all apps I don't really use to the last page of apps, for
example, if you have apps and folders on 3 pages, just move all the stock
apps you don't want to use onto the fourth page. Alternatively, you could
create a folder and call it "Unused Apps" or something like that. That is
not the same as completely hiding or deleting it, but I find it just as
good.

RE: iphone controled thermostats

2012-11-13 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Bill, Chris, Chuck and others,

I guess competition is always a good thing so it's nice to see that more
devices are coming on the market. Here are my thoughts:

1. Chuck asks if the app is accessible and of course for us Voiceover users
that is the key question and one that can probably only be answered if
somebody tries it. On the other hand we all know that the app from
www.RadioThermostat.com is accessible and it can pretty much do anything
they say their's can do. I can also say from experience as I have 3 of the
Radio Thermostats, that they do put out fairly frequent app updates.

2. In the article they say that other comparible units are $150 and up. This
is not true, yes, the Radio Thermostats are $139 on their website, but I
know several people like Brett (can't remember who else) bought them at Home
Depot for $99.

3. Installation of the Radio Thermostat does require a 24V C-Wire so yes,
this could be an issue if you want to put the thermostat in a big house a
long way away from the furnace and a wire is not in place. However, the
Radio Thermostats use 4 AA batteries as backup and if you install it near a
wall outlet you can use a simple AC adapter with the correct voltage and
plug it in to deliver the power it needs for the WiFi module. It sounds to
me as if the Hunter Fan thermostat uses some kind of gateway/bridge which
you have to physically plug into the router and then the thermostat talks to
it. They say that it's a big disadvantage that with other WiFi thermostats
you have to know your WiFi's SSID and password. Well, you do have to know
your password and in my opinion if you don't know your WiFi password you are
in trouble because you need it to connect anything else from a new iPhone to
a new laptop. You don't have to know the SSID, just your network's name,
maybe that's the same, not sure. The Radio Thermostat setup is maybe a bit
more involved than plugging in a gateway and then having it connect
automatically because the devices are pre-paired, but it's not really
difficult and once it' done it stays done.
Also, if you don't want to always run your thermostat on batteries you still
need that C-Wire which they state can be used as well with the Hunter Fan
unit.

In conclusion, this sounds like a good unit, but it's not so revolutionary
as they make it out to be. I think I prefer the Radio Thermostat with a
built-in WiFi radio rather than having to plug another device into my router
which not only has to be plugged into the router but also into a power
outlet. And of course it remains to be seen whether the app for the Hunter
Fan unit is accessible.

Sieghard

Registering devices with Apple support website

2012-11-13 Thread Andrew Lamanche
Dear Listers,

First, I'd like to thank Esther for explaining the importance of registering
whatever Apple devices one has with the support site in the profile section.

However, I have a problem. I have an Apple ID which I use for iCloud and
another ID which I use for iTunes store. It would now appear that my mac
computer is registered to my iCloud ID and my iPad and iPod nano to the iTunes
store ID.

My question is, could I somehow combine the two registration/profiles together?
Can one at this late stage combine the two IDs into one without jeopardising
one's purchase history and messing one's iCloud account? Maybe it's best to
leave things as they are. I don't remember actually registering my i.s devices
under my iTunes store ID. It must have been done automatically because I
purchase through the iTunes store and sink my i.s devices with iTunes.

Any thoughts would be welcome

Andrew

about correct hand position, good technique etc.

Re: searching in ooTunes & tuneInRadio

2012-11-13 Thread Traci
Thank you for this.

Yeah, I like both apps for different reasons. TuneIn, mostly, because it
seamlessly syncs my stations between devices. On ooTunes, I need to email
myself my station list.

I feel like I can find more stations on ooTunes though.

All ypou have to do is go into your library track list then press
delete pon each song you want to delete.

If you just don't want to have these songs play, then you could just
uncheck them.

Re: iphone controled thermostats

2012-11-13 Thread Chuck Dean
Here is what I found with a group search.

Brett posted this in his message and you really do get the most
information
by reading up about the details on the website. Here it is again:
http://www.RadioThermostat.com
You can buy the thermostat right on the website by going to the "Buy
Now"
link. The price is $139, Brett said in his post he bougtht his from
Home
Depot for $99 and as I mentioned, you can also find this on Amazon:
Amazon.com: Homewerks Radio Thermostat CT-30-H-K2 Wireless Thermostat
with
Wi-Fi Module, Dual Wireless Inputs and Touch Screen
http://www.amazon.com/Homewerks-Thermostat-CT-30-H-K2-Wireless-Module...
4YZFU1Q/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8

&qid=1343962818&sr=8-1&keywords=ct30+thermostat
If the link wraps and doesn't work, just search on Amazon for "CT30
WiFi
Thermostat" and you'll find it. The price on Amazon varies, when I
just
checked it was available for $125 with free shipping.
And yes, the app is accessible and in the most recent update the
ability to
set up schedules right from the app was added.
Regards,
Sieghard

A Podcast on inputting addresses into Navigon - Was Re: navigon

Hello Keith and others who might be interested in inputting addresses
into Navigon. I've created an audio podcast which demonstrates doing
this. The link is below. Hopefully this will help out.

Hi, you have to put in addresses from a bigger to smaller point of view.

First it's the state, then the city. Don't use spaces. So for example,
if you are looking for 5221 Keester Ave, Chicago IL 60638 you would do
the following.

1. Type il and then choose Illinois from the list of states.

2. Type Chic and then choose Chicago from the list.

3. Type kees and then choose Keester Ave from the list. Note that I
didn't suggest you type N or S. In short, for the most part don't use
the cardinal directions of an address when inputting into Navigon. There
are exceptions, but 95% of the time you leave them out.

4. Now type 5221 and you will see in the list of choices. If thare
choices with North or South as part of the address, they will display
here along with the correct zip code.

I'd be happy to demo this on an audio podcast if requested.

I have had Navigon practically since it was first released. However, I do
not use it all that often.

One of my biggest issues with it is putting in addresses. I often like to
see where an address mentioned in the news might be relative to me. Many
times, all goes well until I enter the street number, but then I get the
argument the number does not exist or some such message. How can I simply
put in a street and address and expect it to be found. I mean, I am taking
the information right from a newspaper, etc., so you would expect something
close to that should be found. How does Navigon even know there is no 1492
Columbus street, and maybe there is not but there is 1527 Columbus.

The one other thing I wish I could do with any navigation app would be get
directions from one place I will be in the future to another. They all seem
to want to take you from your current location or nothing. If anyone knows a
way around this, I would appreciate it. Maybe someone familiar with
navigation apps who is looking to do a podcast has just gotten an
inspiration. It doesn't seem that sort of sharing goes on as much anymore.

Eric

Re: Music app not always in app switcher

2012-11-13 Thread Ricardo Walker
Hi,

hand positioning isn't really that important. Place 3 fingers on the screen
and swipe right. That should do the trick. You should try putting your device
down on a flat surface until you get use to doing the gesture. If you don't
have orientation lock on, you should turn it on.

Consumers can save an average of $180 a year using a programmable thermostat
according
to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
Hunter Fan's Universal Internet Thermostat is the best valued programmable
thermostat
controlled by a smartphone, retailing for only $99.99.
Competing products with similar functionality retail for more than $150 and
do not
offer Hunter Fan's 5 Minute InstallationT system and ease of use.
"The Universal Internet Thermostat works with a broad range of heating and

"The Universal Internet Thermostat is ideal for people and families who want

Hunter Fan teamed with Arrayent's Internet-ConnectT Service to deliver a
superior
product experience.
"The Hunter Fan team saw that current Internet connected thermostat products
all
suffer from complex installation problems and cost issues," said Shane Dyer,
Arrayent's

"Hunter Fan's years of thermostat product experience, combined with its
commitment
to its 5 Minute InstallationT system made Hunter Fan a perfect match for

We are very pleased to be working with such a forward thinking technology

The first three months of internet connectivity are free, as part a 100%

Consumers can opt to pay $9.99 a year for internet connectivity or pay a
$49.99 one-time

With Hunter Fan's native app for iPhone*, iPad* and iPod* smart devices and

their Universal Internet Thermostat to fit their needs and busy lifestyles.
Subscribers can also set their devices to receive email alerts when a home's

That's awesome Brett, thank you! I'm glad one of these apps is quite
accessible to us! :) I actually don't own an iPhone yet. So, I'm sort of
building myself a solid case to justify the purchase. *grin*

Keeping your post for future reference.

Re: Trivia Tunes

2012-11-13 Thread Shane Clark
Hi Roger,
First, thanks so much for getting back to me with these, they're a great help.
A few questions... With the playlists that you play with the free ones, where
do the songs download to? Somewhere in the app itself, not in your music app
right? And when you buy another playlist to play, do you keep those songs from
it to add to your music collection, or again is it just something the app
stores within itself?
Finally, how would I play with others? I know you said you've never played but
by yourself, but I thought maybe you could somehow play against people in the
game center, or on Facebook? Are there other games that are accessible like
this one?
Thanks for all your help so far, Shane.

Re: Trivia Tunes

2012-11-13 Thread Roger Frischenmeyer

Ok here are the instructions. Hopefully they are understandable.
When the app comes up there is an unlabeled button on the upper right part
of the screen that you have to activate to start the process. To the best of
my knowledge, it is the only button on that screen. on the next page there
are several buttons which all but 1 seem to be labeled and are pretty self
explanatory. The button you are looking for is the play button which is on
the left side of the screen about in the middle. it however isn't clear to
the left. after activating the play button you have a screen where you
choose your categories. There are several free catagories and then you can
buy others at $.99 each. After activating your category, you go to a screen
to choose the number of players from 1 to 4. I have never used more than 1
so I don't know what happens if you choose more than 1. then you must type
your name and hit the go button at the bottom of the screen just to the left
of the delete button. At this point, if you want to type your answers chose
expert mode, and if you want multiple choice, choose MCQ. At this point, the
songs will be downloaded and you must hit start game on the left side of the
screen to start the game. If you have chosen to play using multiple choice
the choices will go across your screen and you tap on the 1 you want. You
get 10 questions. Hope this helps.

RE: rearranging my favorites

2012-11-13 Thread salama
Hello Candy,
1, launch the phone app.
2, activate the favorites tap.
3, double tap the edit button at the top left of the screen.
4, at the rite hand side of each contact you will hear reorder followed by
the contact name. Double tap this button and drag it up or down. You are
going to hear above followed by the name of the contact or below followed by
the name of the contact. Release your finger at the place you would like
your contact to be moved to.
Best regards,

Re: iPhone vs. iPad

2012-11-13 Thread Rob Harris
I don't see them as dumb questions, and since this is all the same iOs and
app, unless you do get a snappy faster device, then nothing is going to
work any faster; user is the usual speed limitation in truth. I'd like to
know about the key command too; but I can't get the much recommended Rii
mini bt keyboard to do the basics of text selection, so no idea how it got
recommended. It don't do any other basic VO using the VO keys combination.
But my mind's wandering; sorry!

Subject: iPhone vs. iPad

Yeah, don't shoot me for asking the same question others have already asked.
I do have a very specific aspect though. I already have an iPhone. I think I
have found a good combination of apps to help me do document editing during
my commute with my Apple Bluetooth keyboard. I want to know if an iPad would
in any way enhance my experience.

1. Is document editing going to be faster?

2. What about switching between apps?

3. Is it possible to use Command + Tab to switch between apps on the iPad,
or is it still necessary to go through the App Switcher? Dumb questions I
know, but I'm picky that way.

I would really appreciate your advice and thoughts. I get most of what I
want on the iPhone. I would take my own advice of just buying an Air to get
the full experience, but laptops aren't allowed at my work site. Ironically,
iPads are allowed in limited circumstances. Thanks in advance.

Re: a dropvox recorder question

2012-11-13 Thread Rob Harris
I just looked, I reckon the answer is No!
Editing was a pain too; 3 double taps to make each file individually go
away.  I know there's careful with some of these confirmations, but heck;
the effort to clear some of this crap isi ncredible. There's one good
standard app where you select a bunch of checkboxes, then the button at
the bottom says delete ## messages; which is a straight yes or no.

I'm blathering, I'll shut up now. RobH.

Is there a way to pause recording in dropvox?
Thanks,
