Nice Improvement in IOS 6.1

2013-01-30 Thread Les Kriegler
One longstanding irritation has been when one turned VO off and then back on,
or one re-booted the iPhone, Samantha always came back on as the default voice.
This has been fixed. Now, the current voice you have chosen remains the
default in the fore mentioned circumstances. Very nice.

Re: access note, is it worth it?

Hi,

A great informative post. Can you let me know which file types are supported,
as this isn't mentioned in the description.

Re: Bad Sleep/Wake Switch

As it so happens, I have a used iPhone 4 that exhibits this same problem. I've
gouged a hole in the rubber of my OtterBox defender from pushing so hard to
make that button activate. I don't know what the cure is either,
unfortunately. Just letting folks know that this has happened to more than one

Re: Problem with updating APPS using the IPhone APP Store

2013-01-30 Thread Tom Lange

Hi,
I installed IOS 6.1 yesterday afternoon, and having seen this latest thread
about updating using the app store, I got curious and tried individual
updates, including Tap Tap See, Around Me, Digit Eyes and Fandango. All of
the updates worked fine. No problems doing this on an iPhone 4.

By the way, those of you who are interested in Tap Tap See will be pleased
to hear that one of the new features that's been added is a Repeat button.

Hi,

I can update on the iPHone just fine using the Update All button. I
haven't tried with individual updates. Unless there's some reason you
don't want to update everything, try the Update All button.

Best,
Anna

Re: Bad Sleep/Wake Switch

2013-01-30 Thread David Chittenden
No, the sleep button does not usually weaken over time. I have an iPhone 4 that
I purchased in 2010 which still works well. I recently replaced it with an
iPhone 5.

If you do not have Apple Care, the repair is bound to cost a significant amount
of money. Apple will know if you have Apple Care. You can call them to find out.

If you are on a calling plan, it would probably cost less to upgrade your
iPhone.

Bad Sleep/Wake Switch

2013-01-30 Thread Tom Lange
Hi,
I bought my 32-gig iPhone 4 from AT&T in April of 2011 or thereabouts.
I have some questions about the phone, which has suddenly developed a problem
with the Sleep/Wake switch. It's gotten really difficult to press for some
reason and doesn't stand out as much as the switch on my friend's iPhone 4. The
phone has seen a lot of use and has been dropped a time or two in the past, but
never on a hard surface, and I always keep it in an Otterbox Defender case. It
has not been dropped recently.

So my questions are these:
1. Has anybody heard of the on/off switches getting funky from normal wear and
tear on the iPhone 4?
2. I can't remember buying Apple Care for it, but my girlfriend swears that I
did. Is there a way to check that through the Apple website or would that
information be available on the phone itself?
3. I'm eligible for an upgrade but money's tight right now. Assuming that I
don't have Apple Care, would Apple replace the device or repair it, and how
much is that apt to cost me?
4. Would I be better off taking it back to my local AT&T store to see what they
can do for me?

Thanks in advance.

Tom

The issue relates to a rate limit imposed on Tweetlist in the new Twitter API
they just switched to. They're working with Twitter on the issue.

have just got an iPhone5 and I did not want another Otterbox Defender case as I

Re: access note, is it worth it?

2013-01-30 Thread Woody Anna Dresner
Hi,

>From my perspective, AccessNote is absolutely worth the money. I got it a few
>hours ago and am thrilled. Yes, it needs more features, such as find and
>replace, the ability to move by paragraph with a braille display, and the
>ability to handle more file types. But it does quite a few things that no
>other notetaking app I've tried does, and it does them well.

One is that when I do a search, I am taken right to the spot where the search
item is. This sort of works in Pages if I'm using a braille display, but really
doesn't work well for me when I'm not. I've wanted to be able to search my
documents for years, and I love being able to do it consistently.

Another benefit is that unlike Pages, wherever I am is in edit mode. With
Pages, I have been frustrated on many occasions by reading along and wanting to
change something, double-tapping, and finding the insertion point is somewhere
else entirely, so I have to find my place again. This isn't happening with
accessNote, at least so far.

AccessNote saves my place in a file. If I'm reading with a braille display, I
need to double-tap to be sure the correct location is saved, and I need to back
out of the file before removing the app from the App switcher, but if I do
those things, it works consistently. Moreover, when I open the app, the line I
was reading appears on the display, rather than my needing to tap somewhere to
get focus to the right place. This isn't a big deal, but it's a nice change
from other apps.

Finally, it's a way to read braille files without a lot of processing, and the
files appear using the formatting with which they were written. Since most
braille files have a lot of extra dot 7s in them, I would still want to change
the case of the whole file to lower case first to get rid of them. But if the
files don't have them or if you don't care about eliminating them, all you have
to do is add a txt extension, and they appear in beautifully formatted braille.

Is $20 a lot to spend for a notetaking app? Absolutely. But since this does so
many things that no other app I've used does, I'm glad I bought it.

The other notetaking apps I've used are Pages, which has the problems I
mentioned, Notes, which is great for short things but would be a pain for
longer ones because it has no search ability, and very briefly Elements, which
has no search facility, Notesy, which wouldn't open the text files I wanted to
work with because I guess they were too long, and Write 2, which wouldn't speak
any of my search results. There certainly might be apps I've missed that have
AccessNote's features, but I've tried quite a few and haven't found those
features anywhere else.

I hope that helps.

Best,
Anna

 Hi,

No, its not just you and me, I have also just had a couple of friends
asking me if I had seen this issue. since it looks to be quite common, I
would assume Tweatlist will release an update to fix this issue shortly.

Cheers,

Hi Jo,

Open Settings, and double-tap Notifications. Double-tap Share Widget, and
double-tap the toggle until it says "On." That should do it.

Re: Kaveat to Ipad 3 speakers not playing out loud, only throug headset, sorta

2013-01-30 Thread David Chittenden
Oh this is proper behaviour. When listening to music, for better quality,
people connect a speaker source through the headphone jack or Bluetooth. So,
the assumption is that you want the playback to end when the speakers or
headset is disconnected. If I am listening to something using my iPhone speaker
and the iPhone is locked, I sometimes plug and unplug my headset to stop
playback rather than turning on the iDevice.

Good evening all:

Since updating my IOS to 6.1, I am no longer able to update my APPS using
the IPhone app store.

When I double tap on the update things, it seems like the new screen is
updating (something like if a new page is being loaded) but nothing happens
and I waited for more than ten minutes.

Is anybody else having this problem?

Cheers.

honestly,

I've got an iPad and an iPhone and the iPad just feels bulky and
unnecessary. Pair up your iPhone with a Bluetooth, and you're

can't solve.
More screen real estate to get a better sense of web layout? This

could make
a difference if you're a web developer and need to verify the

Hi Mark,

Correct me if I misunderstood or describe this incorrectly:

You can play something like music or an internet stream over the headset and
the audio stops playing when you unplug the headset?

If this describes the issue then this is normal behavior, unplugging the
headset will pause any music stream whether it's an online stream, music you
have on your device or an audio book playing via the Audible app.

other way around. Just weirdness.

Skype On-screen keyboard for Ipad (IOS6.1) 3

2013-01-30 Thread Mark BurningHawk
Has anyone noticed that the on-screen keyboard for Skype's IM field is a weird,
sort of squished shape, on the screen of the Ipad 3? Is there a way to make it
"normal," where the keyboard is stretched along the bottom of the screen?
Entering full screen doesn't do this. Thanks.

Problem with updating APPS using the IPhone APP Store

2013-01-30 Thread Marcos Rodrigues
Good evening all:

Since updating my IOS to 6.1, I am no longer able to update my APPS using the
IPhone app store.

When I double tap on the update things, it seems like the new screen is
updating (something like if a new page is being loaded) but nothing happens and
I waited for more than ten minutes.

Is anybody else having this problem?

Cheers.

RE: very basic iPad question

2013-01-30 Thread Joe
I wouldn't get an iPad Mini, or iPad of any kind, if you're happy with your
iPhone. Yeah, it's everyone's individual choice yadda yadda, but honestly,
I've got an iPad and an iPhone and the iPad just feels bulky and
unnecessary. Pair up your iPhone with a Bluetooth, and you're going to get
the exact same experience. Longer battery life? Not enough to make a
difference and not something one of the portable battery pakcs can't solve.
More screen real estate to get a better sense of web layout? This could make
a difference if you're a web developer and need to verify the position of
text, but even then the difference is insignificant. I've got an iPad 4 that
I am not motivated enough to try to keep selling, but from my own
perspective, for a blind person the iPad is not the best investment of
money. Save up a little more and get a Mac Air.

Re: AccessNote is out but there are a few catches for braille users.

2013-01-30 Thread Cheryl Homiak
I'm definitely not saying that it can't be improved and that there aren't
possibilities; I'm just saying that you do have more obvious and mathematically
speaking more numerrous combinations with a fairly full keyboard of some kind
than with some of the braille displays with few keys. But on the other hand,
most people don't use standard keyboards by pressing combinations of letter
keys at once and also there can be advantages to having fewer keys to keep
track of and manipulate. So there are lots of considerations both ways here.

re: lost twitter and facebook from notifications

2013-01-30 Thread Joshua Klander
Hello. My guess is that you somehow disabled the share widget.
To re-enable it, follow these steps:

1. Go into settings and select "notifications."
2. There should be a heading called "not in notification
center."
3. Under this heading, locate the item called "share widget,"
and double-tap it.
4. Swipe to the right until you hear "notification center." This
is a toggle, which is most likely disabled. Double-tap to enable
it.

Hello. I have not tried AccessNote, and don't plan on doing so.
In my opinion, a notetaking app is not worth $20. There is a
built-in Notes app in iOs, and if you want more features, I'm
pretty sure that there are plenty of $0.99 alternatives on the

keys at a time.

In my opinion there are missing some devellopement here gennerely and in this
app speciffic.

Best regards Annie.

Re: Specific Verbatim keyboard questions

2013-01-30 Thread Kim
Thank you. I'm used to typing on a VoiceNote which is also
small.

For those of you who are interested in the Logitech Easy Switch
keyboard, I found it for $84 at www.pricewatch.com with free
shipping.

Now 1 more question, I would assume that if I was writing a
report using my iPhone and a keyboard that I would use an app
such as the native note app on my phone and then save it to Drop
Box or something of the like. Is this true?

Yes, the Verbatim keyboard has a switch to lock it in the open

position,

so you can use it on your lap. I've gotten used to the key sizes,
position and fold. I think you'd also have to get used to using a
smaller keyboard as well. The only keyboards you wouldn't have to

get
used to would be the full size keyboard, so you need to make some

trade

offs between portability and familiarity of the keyboard layout.

Solution to my IOS update problem of icons sayin "Wifi"

2013-01-30 Thread Jon Pierson
Hi,
Thanks to a really smart guy from Speed Dots, I tried labeling one of the
elements that was saying Wifi.

Just to summarize, the problem started happening after the latest IOS
release, anything I touched after focus had been in the dock, as well as the
icon showing what home page I was on, plus many controls in numerous apps
announced "Wifi" before the correct item.
I was told to try a 2-finger double tap & hold and to my surprise, the edit
box contained the word "Wifi". However, deleting the characters did no good
and I tried it several times. My next idea was replacing it with a space and
this did the trick.

Well, actually I can BrailleTouch for $15 if I do it in the first few days.

Re: AccessNote is out but there are a few catches for braille users.

2013-01-30 Thread Annie Skov Nielsen
Hi.

A great idea to let dot 7 or 8 together with a letter and space do the
keystrokes.
I have also bought the app. I really hope there will be some braille
improvements soon.

Best regards Annie.

Re: AccessNote is out but there are a few catches for braille users.

2013-01-30 Thread Annie Skov Nielsen
Hi Mary.

I agree with you.

Apple is also making differences for keyboard users and braille users, there
are a great number of shortcuts you can not make with a braille display, which
you can make with a keyboard. It is in my opinion really annoying.

Maybe there has been some problems with making the same possibilities for
braille users because of the differences in keybords and braille displays
behaviour.

Best regards Annie.

Ipad 3 speakers not playing out loud, only throug headset, sorta

2013-01-30 Thread Mark BurningHawk
Until now, I've only ever played VoiceOver through my Ipad 3's external
speakers. I've used it to stream TV and play other music through the headset
jack, but never played music or TV out loud. Today, I tried to hear a TV
stream through my Ipad's speakers, but heard nothing *EXCEPT* VoiceOver. VO
was audible, but the stream content was not. When I plugged the headset back
in, I still couldn't hear anything except VoiceOver; the media stream was muted.

What's going on here?
Thanks. :)

Maybe if you sync directly with Outlook, I sync directly to the Windows Live
account and for my business email I use Office 365 which is full hosted

Interesting. I sync my contacts with Microsoft Outlook, and relationships
work in that scenario.

Re: iPod 4th generation frozen during 6.1 upgrade

2013-01-30 Thread Bob Hill
I got it sorted out.
Restarted the computer, reconnected the iPod, held power and home, then just
home, for 10 seconds. iTunes came up and told me the iPod was in recovery mode.
I had to restore the device and it's good to go.

On the Logitech one I don't know yet as it hasn't arrived. On the second

for 2 seconds, and your device finds it.

Re: AccessNote is out but there are a few catches for braille users.

2013-01-30 Thread Jesper Holten
Hi.
One idea could be to use dot 8 with chord and som letters, or dot 7-8
with or without cord, to make commands. Just an idea. Though I do not
know if that would conflict with any other braille table.
I like the Interface though, and the fact that it keeps the cursor
position is worth alot in my opinion, as far as I know this is not
offered by any main stream notetaking app.

And I fully agree with you Mary that it is abit funny that AFB has not
ensured fully equal features and specs for braille and keyboard users,
even more so when they at the same time on their website and in
Access Worls promote the use of Braille. But lets hoepe this issue is
quickly fixed.
Best regards, Jesper.

That happened with my iPhone 4. I experimented and left my iPhone connected to

RE: USING APPLE KEYBOARD WITH MORE THAN ONE ITEM

Would you happen to know the key layout on this bt keyboard? What is the

I checked it out, and just ordered it. Here is the link

Got great reviews too. Here is the link to the one I will be retiring.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005PCANUA/ref=oh_details_o03_s00_i00

The difference between this one, and the Logitech one, is it can pair with 4
devices, it takes 2 triple A battery's, and also is a little lighter. As
for the battery's, I have had mine for almost 6 months, and have never had
to change the battery's. The Logitech keyboard is charged by USB. HTH

please pass on a review. I have a mac, an iphone, and an ipad. I'm not
sure how to disconnect the keyboard from the mac if I want to use it with
the ipad or iphone. I don't have a usb keyboard attached to the mac so I
just shut the mac down then I can connect it to the ipad.
I am thinking seriously of getting another keyboard for the ipad, but if
there is one that will switch, well.

Hi,

Adding to this. I tried switching to 6 dots braille in Danish and the

each braille table or language?

Keep up the good work.

Looking forward to seeing this app evolve.

It is nice to have an app with a very sleek interface, and the cursor
tracking seem to work. However the promissed commands are not all that
usable especially if you use a braille display and if you happen to be
an international user, the special keystrokes they have included
interfeers with those braille character sets where dot 8 are included.
Thus going to top of document surch etc, cannot be performed. This is
a minor problem for me since I use the Us braille table most often,
but still it is anoying.
Furthermore, and this is even worse, you cannot jump by page or
paragraph by using the braille display only an apple keyboard. I
really hope this will be fixed soon, and I will be happy to assist if
any help is needed.

Is the app worth buying. Yes I think it is if not for anything else,
then for the fact that the cursor stays where you left it in the note,
which is something I have greatly missed.
I hope the qwerty and braille commands can be updated so they offer
the same functionallity and it would also be good if a solution for
the shortcuts interfeering with certain none english braille tables
can be found.

Re: iOS 6.1 and accessibility from Applevis

2013-01-30 Thread Peter Holdstock
If I’ve understood your problem correctly that doesn’t sound like a bug but
would be normal. Even though someone types English text, if they are in another
country the text will be encoded in their local alnguage unless they change it
(there is no way to do that as a user in most apps). It’s just voice over using
the correct synthesiser for the language it thinks you are reading. It happens
to me as well. Just use the rotor to change from the default voice to whichever
voice you want to read the content with. The default will always change the
synthesiser on the fly as it needs to.

Hello everybody:

The bug I experienced with reading webpages and email messages generated
outside of the United States in languages other than English still exists when
the US English voice is selected as the default. When this kind of content is
accessed, VoiceOver will attempt to read it in the language of the country
where the email or website is generated from this even happens if the message
is written in English. However, if you switch the voice to British English or
Australian English, the message reads fine. I do still do not have an
explanation for this problem. I Will copy Apple accessibility on this message

Re: AccessNote is out but there are a few catches for braille users.

2013-01-30 Thread Mary Otten
Another comment on AccessNote, owners of the original iPad can't use the app,
which requires ios6. Now what, I wonder, is so special about this app that it
requires ios6? Interestingly, the description in the app store gives no hint
that the braille user's experience with respect to the features of the app is
not going to be equal to that of a speech user with a bluetooth keyboard. For a
blindness org to put out an app that does not allow for equal experiences for
braille users ought to be unacceptable IMHO. Kind of like NFB and the first
version of BLIO. It sounds like a good app. I hope they update it quickly to
provide an equal experience for braille users and speech users.

Re: curiosity question

2013-01-30 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
Hi, it's similar if you use Google contacts. However a workaround this
is you can add the relationship as the nick name. So, this way you can
add girlfriend, wife, daughter, son, grandma, ETC to the nickname of
each contact and it works. You can't do this with Siri, but it still
works by doing it manually.

is my mother and when I say Yes, I get the following message:

Hi,
This is done through "relationships" - a label for a contact that you can
set on Siri to tell who your spouse is. This is done from
Settings/General/Siri.

Re: Facebook App Latest Update

Hi,

I still have a problem with status updates being skipped with voice over. If I
use the site directly on my computer than I I can see all the updates. Any one
here have the same problem? Refreshing does nothing for me.

Re: iOS 6.1 appears to be rolling out

2013-01-30 Thread Woody Anna Dresner
Hi,

At first, you'll only get the update if you check for updates. But at some
point, you'll get notified if an update is out and you don't have it. I don't
think iCloud has anything to do with it.

Best,
Anna

Got great reviews too. Here is the link to the one I will be retiring.

The difference between this one, and the Logitech one, is it can pair with 4

for the battery's, I have had mine for almost 6 months, and have never had

Re: curiosity question

2013-01-30 Thread Jonathan Mosen
I think relationships are a minor worry compared with a lot of the personal
information many people have on their devices. It's critical for this reason
that devices are password protected, preferably with a strong alpha-numeric
password. Also that Find my iPhone is enabled so you can track the phone down
and erase it if necessary. The feature to erase all contents if the password is
entered incorrectly 10 times is also a good safeguard.

 Hi,

If a contact has a home phone and a work phone, does Siri have a
default? If calling the home phone is desired for a certain call, how
does one specify this for Siri?

Is it as simple as saying, Siri, call Bill at home, or Siri, call Bill
at work (or Siri, call Bill on his mobile)?

 Thanks in advance. Keith

Re: iPod 4th generation frozen during 6.1 upgrade

2013-01-30 Thread Steve

Bob,

Hold down the home button after connecting the USB cable. The computer
should recognized the USB connection and iTunes opened. Then you should be
able to restore and update the IOS to 6.1.

Take my advice, I don't use it anyway.

Hi all,

I attempted to upgrade my wife's iPod 4th generation to iOS 6.1.
The device froze after it was supposed to reboot, and now we can't do
anything with it, no shut down, no reset, etc.

I tried connecting it to my Macintosh , but iTunes doesn't recognize it.
Is there any keystroke combination to get the device "unstuck"?

Thanks for any suggestions.

I use to be able to share individual files with the older dropbox app, but
since they have updated the app, I'm unable to find a share button.
Shouldn't I be able to share zip files? thanks.

wow, this is a very large and open ended question.

Mac accessibility is comprehensive and of a good quality. you can read more
about it at:

www.apple.com/accessibility

you can format a MacBook and install OSx again should you wish to.

Re: Navigon question, please help.

2013-01-30 Thread Neil Barnfather - TalkNav
The Map Manager is the tab you need to be in, its the 3rd or 4th tab in from
the bottom left on the iPhone. different if you are using Navigon on the iPad.

Within here, I have found that simply flicking left to right does not inform
you which map is downloaded or marked for it.

So, find the maps you defenately want, and double tap, now, physically drag
your finder down the screen and you'll find Voice Over will additionally tell
you if the map is marked for download or not.

question about the dropbox app and sharing files

I use to be able to share individual files with the older dropbox app, but
since they have updated the app, I'm unable to find a share button. Shouldn't
I be able to share zip files? thanks.

The usb port on the airport express is for attaching a printer.

You can not use it for attaching a hard drive, it doesn't support that.

Re: iOS 6.1 appears to be rolling out

2013-01-30 Thread David Chittenden
No, the update notification happens automatically. It happens when the iOS
device connects with the server. If checking is the same as iTunes, it happens
once every few days or when manually triggered in settings, general, updates.

Hi. I am connected to iCloud and I didn't receive a notification about
the update. That other post about waiting for a notification doesn't
make sense because Matthew Dire said that he got a notification right
away when the update was released. So do you have to tell iCloud to
push those kinds of notifications to your phone?

Re: USING APPLE KEYBOARD WITH MORE THAN ONE ITEM

2013-01-30 Thread Maria And Joe
Hi. If you happen to check this out, or if you know of anyone that does,
please pass on a review. I have a mac, an iphone, and an ipad. I'm not sure
how to disconnect the keyboard from the mac if I want to use it with the ipad
or iphone. I don't have a usb keyboard attached to the mac so I just shut the
mac down then I can connect it to the ipad.
I am thinking seriously of getting another keyboard for the ipad, but if there
is one that will switch, well.
