Re: mbraille is available
Don't think so, found no reference to it, and the ergonomics of it don't seem to pan out well either. They gave a lotof thought to this, and is why the last two good ones didn't work that way round. That is - your third fingers are up near the furthest corners, and first fingers quite near the centre nearest you; so keys are defined as diagonal stripes in the directions your fingers more or less point. This is how it is portrayed in the text I read. Seems straight forward enough to me. I admit, that's never as good as doing it. Re: mbraille is available
Oh, you have to put it in table mode before putting it down and using table mode. Away mode is more straight across and wouldn't work well down flat. again, they worked this out quite well. another message asked about the keys being defined like stripes, and this is described in the .txt user guide too; and also the ability to swap the key positions to reverse them so that 1-4 are top or bottom according to preference. But table top mode means the stripes are diagonal instead of straight across, this is how the hands and fingers land on the screen if you just take it natural and do it. Some things work better if you don't try think about them too hard. Re: TapTapSee Feedback
Hi. Keep up the good database work it is really becoming more and more useful the more things it can identify reliably and we use it to identify cans and boxes that we cannot identify by touch alone. The more products that can be easily identified the better in our opinion. We have however, not had such good luck with using it as a laundry sorting tool the color identification seem not to be that great, though lighting and the 4s camera can be part of the problem here. One day I was standing waiting for the bus and I just took a random picture of the approaching bus, it did not identify the busline sadly but told me there was a man with a blue jacket in front of me which turned out to be true when asked. The man was abit baffled when I approached him but well after telling him the background he found the thing we could use our iPhone for very cool. Best regards, Jesper. Ps. Apps such as BlindSquare, Ariadne GPS, Sendero LookAround etc. would not work. -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Dani L Pagador Sent: Thursday, June 27, 2013 8:55 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: RE: Can an iPod with a Reciever Use GPS apps? In prior Keynote addresses, they always mentioned accessibility changes, improvements, etc. Siri is getting a new voice, but that has nothing to do with accessibility. In fact, one thing they mentioned that does not sound very good from an accessibility stand point is the automatic updating of apps. If they don't allow us to disable that feature, there will be no way to avoid updating an app that has broken accessibility. I know there are developers on this list and I know you are all under NDAs, but it will be good to know if accessibility is being improved rather than ignored. More good news about the Netatmo Weather Station
Hello, I just wanted to give a quick update about the Netatmo Weather Station for those who bought it and for those who might be interested in it. First of all, for new members and those who haven't heard about it, the Netatmo Weather Station consists of 2 modules, an indoor and an outdoor module. The indoor module has a micro USB connection and uses a wall adapter for power and it also has 4 Triple A batteries for backup power. It is a round tube about 6 inches long and maybe 2 inches thick, there is no display at all and it only has one touch sensitive button at the top which one can push to force an update or you can push and hold it to initiate pairing mode. The indoor module connects to your WiFi and via your WiFi to the internet so that you can access it from anywhere in the world where you have a data connection. It also has Bluetooth which until recently was not used, but now the station uses Bluetooth for the initial setup/connection to your WiFi. This process was inaccessible so far, but I am happy to report that it is now fully accessible via the free Netatmo app which you also use once the station is paired to check the weather data provided by the station. The outdoor module uses 900 Mhz and is pre-paired with the indoor module and it also uses 4 Triple A batteries. Once you put batteries in it, it will automatically pair itself with the indoor module and nothing else has to be done. It is also a tube of the exact same thickness, but it's only maybe 4 inches long. Both modules are made from aluminum and have that same quality feel as an Apple product such as the Apple Wireless Keyboard. The weather station provides the following information (you can of course set if you want metric or imperial units): Indoor Measurements: Current Temperature Minimum and maximum temperatures in the last 24-hour period Humidity CO2 level in parts per million Air quality indicator - indicates if air is good or if CO2 is high and room needs to be aired Noise level in decibels Air Pressure - this is displayed with the indoor measurements, but air pressure is the same indoors and outdoors. Outdoor Measurements Current Temperature Minimum and maximum temperatures in the last 24-hour period Felt Like Temperature Humidity Air quality indicator - uses government data from the nearest weather station The app can also send push notifications about a bunch of events such as high CO2 level, low temperature, high temperature etc. Another new feature is that you can now buy additional indoor units for $79, the initial cost for the Weather Station is $180). They are similar in size to the outdoor module and you can place them in different rooms, e.g. you could have one upstairs and one in the basement. Later this year a rainfall sensor will also be available which will measure the amount of precipitation. Netatmo was incredibly accommodating to improve the accessibility of the app which in the beginning was not that great. There is still a graphical mode which automatically activates if you turn the phone to landscape orientation and that of course won't read, but in portrait mode Voiceover reads all the information beautifully in a simple interface. The head developer made it possible for me to discuss the various versions I beta tested with him directly on Skype and it was a fantastic experience. I know that the price for this Weather Station is on the high side and it's not a product for everybody, but if you are willing to pay this amount you will definitely get the most accessible weather observation product out there. Lastly, here are the links to the Netatmo website where you can buy the station (I believe you can also get it on Amazon) and to the Netatmo app on iTunes, it won't do you much good without a weather station, but I thought I include it anyways in case somebody wants to read the entire app description: Netatmo Website: http://www.Netatmo.com Netatmo App in the App Store: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/netatmo/id532538499?mt=8 Best regards, Sieghard -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. Thank you Sieghard for this thorough report. It appears from your description that the dew point is not provided. Is this true? Re: goggles and Tap Tap See couldn't read one thing so used face time to get it done
With Tap Tap See, here's what I've learned about cans. Most cans have the seem at about 9 o'clock. If you put the seem there, the picture on the can will then be at the 6 o'clock spot or directly in front of you. It will require some playing with to find where your going to get the best results. For example, on my first try I got back, picture is can of chili. Useful but only if you always buy one kind such as chili with beans. If you buy chili with out beans then it is only 50 percent useful but then so is a good guess. By moving my iPhone nearer and farther away, I could find the sweet spot where it would identify a 15 ounce can correctly every time. The best results I got in my testing was with the daylight coming in over my shoulder and directly on the face of the can I was trying to identify. The camera lens is also in the top right corner on the back of the camera I found myself forgetting that then trying to take the shot as if I were shooting from the center of my iPhone. It helped when I had my fully sighted son look at the screen for me so that I would get an idea of the placement. He helped on a number of shots and found out about the seem of the label on the can most of the times is at the 9 o'clock spot so that the picture will be facing you. Where you live the cans may or may not be that way but it should serve as a starting point. MBraille and Sending Email
Hi All, I have seen a few emails on this list and elsewhere about not being able to get MBraille to fill in an email address when using the dot mail command. I suspect that people are forgetting that for this to work, the actual email address must either be in your contacts database or you have to write out the entire email address on the dot mail command line. So, I want to send an email to Allison. I must first make sure that Allison's email address is filled in on her contacts card. Unfortunately, I have lots of contacts that don't have an email address filled in. Assuming, however, that Allison's address is there, I can simply write the body of the email in MBraille, go to a blank line, write .mail Hello Allison for the subject and the name Allison after the quoted text. When I then create another blank line, MBraille opens the mail program with everything already filled in. All I have to do is double-tap the send button. If Allison's email address was not in my contacts, I would need to turn grade two translation off and write Allison's entire email address after the quoted subject and then enter a blank line to get the mail program to load with everything filled in. Using The Email Command In MBraille
Hello Folks, Since several on this list have been having difficulty inserting an email address, I decided to analyze what works for me. 1. First, write the text that one wants in the message body. 2. Add a new line by swiping down (starting from the volume side). 3. Add the mail command using .mail and then a space. 4. Type the subject line using both an open andclose quotation marks and then a space. 5. Change to uncontracted braille by holding down on dot 6 and flick up or down. 6. use dot 4 as the quotation marks in front and after writing the email address. 7. Swipe downward (starting from the volume button side) to activate the command. I hope this helps others to insert the email address when using MBraille to generate an email. RE: More good news about the Netatmo Weather Station
Hi Paul, Dew point indicates the point at which the relative humidity that is in the air turns from vapour into water hence forms dew. If the dew point is 10 degrees Celsius and the forecast calls for a high temperature that day of 25 degrees Celsius and a low temperature of 12 degrees Celsius then this simply means that it will not get cold enough at night for dew to form. Dew point is used in the calculation of the Heat Index or, as we call it in Canada, the Humidex. However, in the calculation of the indix which in turn results in coming up with the Felt Like Temperature, a set dew point of 14 degrees Celsius or 57 degrees Fahrenheit is used in the States and 7 Celsius or 45 Fahrenheit in Canada. Either way, the Netatmo weather station does display Felt-Like temperature and while it might be nice to know the dew point, in itself the dew point is not a true indicator since it has to be combined with other factors such as relative humidity to come up with Felt Like temperature. Here is a link to a Wikipedia article which explains it better than I can: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heat_index I will ask Netatmo whether they have plans to provide dew point, but I am not sure how difficult this is ad what sort of sensor is needed. One always has to keep in mind that even though the Netatmo Weather Station costs $180 and one can buy simple digital wireless stations with LCD readouts for half that or less, the quality of the measurements are as good as what you pay. Highly precise commercial weather stations costs thousands of Dollars so one can't expect quite the same from one that is $180. But, as I said, I'll ask. Wind, by the way, is also a big factor in Felt Like temperature. At this point there is no Wind Sensor on the Netatmo Weather Station, but just as the rain sensor is in the works, I believe a Wind Sensor or anemometer, to use the correct term, is in the plan. RE: More good news about the Netatmo Weather Station
Hi again, Paul, As usual, Netatmo sent me a prompt reply, here is what they wrote (I sent another reply and asked if they are planning to specifically list the actual dew point measurement and will post when I receive the answer): Hi Sieghard, Thank you very much for your support. Dew point is indeed used for our calculation of felt like temperature when done using Humidex index (see below) We use measurements from the station (temperature, humidity) to calculate felt like temperature. The only data coming from other sources is wind speed, which is currently taken from a premium weather internet service (Meteogroup), but will also be measured from the weather station when we release our anemometer module. For further details, you can refer to our help section. I hereby include a selection: Feels like temperature This is computed data, obtained by adding the combined effect of moisture and wind over human perception of heat and cold. To achieve reliable data, the station uses a combination of two usual formulae: wind-chill which represents the effect of wind on cold temperatures and Humidex/Heat Index which represents the effect of moisture on high temperatures. Humidex vs. Heat index setting The formula used to represent the effect of moisture on high feels like temperature is either Humidex or Heat index, depending on your geographical region. Default settings use Heat index in the United States, and Humidex in Canada and Europe. You can manually change the formula used in the http://my.netatmo.com/settings#my_units the unit-setting menu. That's fantastic feedback Sieghard. Wish all developers would be this good. Thanks for asking the question and for your thorough response. Paul From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Sieghard Weitzel Sent: Friday, June 28, 2013 12:26 To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: RE: More good news about the Netatmo Weather Station Hi again, Paul, As usual, Netatmo sent me a prompt reply, here is what they wrote (I sent another reply and asked if they are planning to specifically list the actual dew point measurement and will post when I receive the answer): Hi Sieghard, Thank you very much for your support. You can manually change the formula used in the the unit-setting menu.http://my.netatmo.com/settings#my_units Regards, Carlos From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Sieghard Weitzel Sent: Friday, June 28, 2013 7:45 AM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: RE: More good news about the Netatmo Weather Station Hi Paul, Dew point indicates the point at which the relative humidity that is in the air turns from vapour into water hence forms dew. Fw: [Nfbnet-members-list] Convention and Blindsquare
- Original Message - From: Danielsen, Chris (by way of David Andrewsdandr...@visi.com) To: nfbnet-members-l...@nfbnet.org Sent: Friday, June 28, 2013 11:55 AM Subject: [Nfbnet-members-list] Convention and Blindsquare The 2013 convention of the National Federation of the Blind in Orlando has been registered with Blind Square Event, a free version of the popular Blind Square navigation app for iOS devices. We hope that it will help convention attendees navigate the convention area and its surroundings. More information about this app is below. Chris Danielsen, Director of Public Relations National Federation of the Blind BlindSquare Event is a free app that makes use of the latest features available in smartphones to aid the blind and visually impaired during special events held by blindness organizations. BlindSquare Event is available for the iPhone and iPad in the App Store. When you are at an event that has been registered with the developer of BlindSquare Event and BlindSquare Event has determined your location using your iOS-device's GPS capabilities, it will look up information about your surroundings on Foursquare and Open Street Map. Employing unique algorithms, it will then ascertain the information most useful to you and speak it in a clear synthetic voice. You can use BlindSquare Event for example to find a café within a selected radius or to locate the nearest post office or the library. Shake your device to hear your current address, as well as information about the location of the nearest street intersection and venues around you. Track your destination, so BlindSquare Event will periodically announce the distance and direction while you are traveling. Simulate locations to explore their surroundings before you visit them. If you use BlindSquare Event to mark your position, it can help you to find this spot again later. BlindSquare Event possesses filters you can set, so you only hear the information you currently need. Have BlindSquare Event announce streets and saved places only, so you do not get overwhelmed by more information than you need. If you mark your saved places and Foursquare venues as Favorites, BlindSquare Event will always notify you when you reach them. Since BlindSquare Event saves your favorites and your places to iCloud, they get synched between all of your iOS-devices, and you can use BlindSquare Event on all of them. Although you will need VoiceOver to operate the app, BlindSquare Event uses its own high quality Acapela voices in many different languages to announce information about your environment. This means you will always hear all of the information you need, even when you can't touch the screen of your device, you lock the screen, or you use another app while BlindSquare Event is running in the background. BlindSquare Event will start working two days before an event begins and will stop working two days after the event has ended. Its use will be limited to a radius of 43 miles or 70 kilometers around the location of the event. You can download BlindSquare Event from the App Store at https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/bs-event/id635707709?mt=8ign-mpt=uo%3D4 We recommend that you download and install BlindSquare Event while you have access to a wifi network as the app is about 90 mb and when you launch it for the first time, it will download an additional file to install its high quality speech synthesizer. Since BlindSquare Event does not include offline maps, you need an active internet connection while using it. BlindSquare Event provides the same functionality as the paid version of BlindSquare as long as it is used at the time and location of an event that has been registered with the developer of BlindSquare and BlindSquare Event. Therefore you may listen to this one-hour podcast about BlindSquare to learn more about how to use BlindSquare Event http://www.applevis.com/sites/default/files/podcasts/AppleVisPodcast387.mp3_.mp3 or read the BlindSquare FAQ at http://www.blindsquare.com/faq/. Re: Contractions in embraille
Hi Bob, I think what is confusing you is when you use the dot 6, y to insert ally, VO will announce capital. A similar issue occurs when you use the ff lower contraction in the middle of a word. VO announces exclamation but when you complete the word it is expanded correctly. A work around is to turn off announcing characters and just have VO announce the words. This is found in the settings menu. HTH. most accessible news feed app?
Hi, I have been getting my news feed via the internet under windows. However, I'd like to move all that to my IPhone. Does anyone have experience with news feed apps? How accessible are they and which has proven to be the most accessible? I'd prefer free apps but will consider paid ones too if they are really good Thanks. goggles problem
Hi, I installed goggles last night and have been trying to get it to work. Usine an i4s with latest version of ios 6. I see there is a free version and a 99 cent version, so I got the 99 cent version. The install went fine and the program runs, but I do not get any male voice at all and I can't seem to get it to identify anything, not even an unknow. I tried turning voiceover off, but no go. Is there a setting somewhere I need to change? I listened to the applevis podcast on googles and saw how it should work ane also speak. But, mine isn't doing any of that. Anyone have any ideas as to what I can try to make the thing work? Other picture apps such as taptapsee work fine. RE: most accessible news feed app?
Feedller is very good and the just recently put out an update that allows for other rss syncing services that aren't dependant on Google Reader. I migrated to The Old Reader service for now. I've tried Digg and Feedly, but they're not as comprehensive or accessible. If only there were a cross platform solution like Google Reader... Oh well, at least for now, The Old Reader and Feedller work well for the i-devices. -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Larry Lumpkin Sent: Friday, June 28, 2013 2:33 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: RE: most accessible news feed app? RE: More good news about the Netatmo Weather Station
Dew point is the temperature at which the air becomes saturated and water may precipitate out. Where it precipitates is dependent on the surfaces involved. At 10:44 AM 6/28/2013, you wrote: Hi Paul, Dew point indicates the point at which the relative humidity that is in the air turns from vapour into water hence forms dew. If the dew point is 10 degrees Celsius and the forecast calls for a high temperature that day of 25 degrees Celsius and a low temperature of 12 degrees Celsius then this simply means that it will not get cold enough at night for dew to form. Dew point is used in the calculation of the Heat Index or, as we call it in Canada, the “Humidex”. However, in the calculation of the indix which in turn results in coming up with the “Felt Like Temperature”, a set dew point of 14 degrees Celsius or 57 degrees Fahrenheit is used in the States and 7 Celsius or 45 Fahrenheit in Canada. Either way, the Netatmo weather station does display “Felt-Like” temperature and while it might be nice to know the dew point, in itself the dew point is not a true indicator since it has to be combined with other factors such as relative humidity to come up with Felt Like temperature. Here is a link to a Wikipedia article which explains it better than I can: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heat_indexhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heat_index I will ask Netatmo whether they have plans to provide dew point, but I am not sure how difficult this is ad what sort of sensor is needed. One always has to keep in mind that even though the Netatmo Weather Station costs $180 and one can buy simple digital wireless stations with LCD readouts for half that or less, the quality of the measurements are as good as what you pay. Highly precise commercial weather stations costs thousands of Dollars so one can’t expect quite the same from one that is $180. But, as I said, I’ll ask. Wind, by the way, is also a big factor in Felt Like temperature. At this point there is no Wind Sensor on the Netatmo Weather Station, but just as the rain sensor is in the works, I believe a Wind Sensor or anemometer, to use the correct term, is in the plan. First of all, for new members and those who haven’t heard about it, the Netatmo Weather Station consists of 2 modules, an indoor and an outdoor module. It is also a tube of the exact same thickness, but it’s only maybe 4 inches long. Both modules are made from aluminum and have that same quality feel as an Apple product such as the Apple Wireless Keyboard. The weather station provides the following information (you can of course set if you want metric or imperial units): Indoor Measurements: Current Temperature Minimum and maximum temperatures in the last 24-hour period Humidity CO2 level in parts per million Air quality indicator – indicates if air is good or if CO2 is
RE: More good news about the Netatmo Weather Station
Dew point is a calculated number. It should not be hard for the app to do this. Temperature and humidity are what is needed as inputs. At 12:25 PM 6/28/2013, you wrote: Hi again, Paul, As usual, Netatmo sent me a prompt reply, here is what they wrote (I sent another reply and asked if they are planning to specifically list the actual dew point measurement and will post when I receive the answer): Hi Sieghard, Thank you very much for your support. I hereby include a selection: “Feels like” temperature This is computed data, obtained by adding the combined effect of moisture and wind over human perception of heat and cold. You can manually change the formula used in the http://my.netatmo.com/settings#my_unitsthe unit-setting menu. Question re Skype video call
I have often thought how useful it would be to make a Skype video call to get assistance with product identification. This brings up a question. Am I correct that when placing a Skype video call, the iPhone's front camera would be activated? In prior Keynote addresses, they always mentioned accessibility changes, improvements, etc. Siri is getting a new voice, but that has nothing to do with accessibility. In fact, one thing they mentioned that does not sound very good from an accessibility stand point is the automatic updating of apps. If they don't allow us to disable that feature, there will be no way to avoid updating an app that has broken accessibility. I know there are developers on this list and I know you are all under NDAs, but it will be good to know if accessibility is being improved rather than ignored. Re: Need To Talk With A Moderator
Note I stopped including people's email addresses in posts to mailing lists because they can be picked up by spammers. I'm not sure if Raul and Cara are concerned about this or not, but since they don't include their email addresses in the message footers, I figured I wouldn't include them either. I do think it's a good idea to keep information like this around though. I have a Mailing Lists folder where I keep any emails I get about mailing lists , such as those introductory messages, information on list guidelines and so on. RE: Question re Skype video call
Hi Donald, You are correct, by default a video call starts by using the front facing camera. Once the call has started, you can find the video button, I believe it is the very left button along the bottom, and then switch to the back camera. I haven't tried this since the last update, but before you had to tap on that very left button of the 5 buttons above the home key, then right above in the middle the options for Back Facing, Front Facing and Off came up. I have often called my Mom via Skype or Facetime (she has an iPad) to ask her to identify something or simply because I wanted to show her something. Just yesterday I wanted to show something to my nephew who has an iPhone 5. He was on his way driving somewhere so he pulled over and we used a 3G connection and it worked perfectly. One last example goes back a ways. I was walking along in the winter, took a glove off to do something and dropped it. I had walked several steps before I noticed it and just couldn't find it in the snow. Nobody else was around so I called my Mom on the phone, told her to go to her computer and then called her on Skype. I pointed my phone back the way I had come and slowly walked back and after about 6 steps she saw my glove off to the side and directed me to it. Fortunately our carriers in Canada don't try to tell us that we can't use Facetime or Skype over 3G although apparently this is or soon will be a thing of the past in the States as well. Roberts Sent: Friday, June 28, 2013 4:51 PM To: Viphone Subject: Question re Skype video call I have often thought how useful it would be to make a Skype video call to get assistance with product identification. This brings up a question. Am I correct that when placing a Skype video call, the iPhone's front camera would be activated? Since the rear camera is better suited to product identification, is there some way to use it rather than the front camera? Thanks. RE: dew point apps
Hi Dan, Thanks for pointing out the dewpoint calculation apps, I'll have to check them out. However, I did want to point out that the Netatmo Weather Station provides a lot of information about your indoor and outdoor conditions which you can't get with an app without hardware. Temperature, humidity, CO2 level, air pressure etc. are all examples of values which can only be measured and not calculated. Wow, there are several apps that will do the estimated dew point calculation and other calculations as well. for anyone interested but can't afford the weather station take a look. these might give you some things to consider.
