Re: The plus sign in Braille
I can produce an ING combination whether contractions are on or off; but can't seem to do an escape using dot4 to get a plus. Good job I've not needed it. Still a case for a standard method of escaping the next character, including the AT@ sign for the sake of consistency. I know of dot4A for @, dot4aLetter for something else; If dot4 was the standard escape character, dot4dot4 would hardly be rocket science to get the @, and simplify finding all the others we need, including the Plus+. Re: Speak notifications on lock screen, is not working
Hi i get this on both my iPhone 4s running 7.0.4 and iPad mini running the same, think it's a bug that will hopefully be fixed for the next update to iOS, 7.1 or something like that, mind you there are focus issues in the lock screen anyway which i can replicate on both devices so this bug must have one or more related symptoms, it doesn't hurt to let Apple know though. Re: Speak notifications on lock screen, is not working
In addition to turning off the speaking of notifications in the lock screen, flip the mute button so your phone is muted. After you do this, you won't hear VoiceOver say anything except for screen lock, which I assume is that well known bug we've discussed on list before. I assume you're not saying that VoiceOver is reading the notification but rather reading the time to you and maybe something else. Note that flipping the mute switch is what the sighted would do to silence there iPhone in a meeting, so except for this screen lock announcement bug, this is working very close to the way I would like it to work. RE: audio books and voice dream
You want to zip the files, not a folder. Make sure they are named sequentially so Voice Dream knows to treat each file as a chapter. The name of the zip file will become the name of the book. I have an abridged reading of the Hobbit and I made sure each file has a leading 0 for single digit numbers, 01, 02, etc. followed by a name. I zipped the 20 files into a zip file called The Hobbit. When Voice Dream imported it, I had the book title and each chapter in order. Bluetooth Keyboard Command for Getting to Address Button of Safari
Hello, everyone. I have just started seriously using my Apple Wireless Keyboard with my iPhone 5 running iOS 7.0.4. Is there a Bluetooth keyboard command for getting to the address button in Safari? Control-up arrow gets me there with Quick Nav on but not with Quick Nav off. Thank you for all help. Craig -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. I managed this, but only iwth contractions on. I had to put a space for the interpretation to take effect; so not sure how you get further text to follow it directly. Amazon Instant Video
Can someone who is using Amazon Instant Video on there IPhone 5s let me know how to get an episode to play? I've only seen one series that actually had a play button under each episode and they play fine, however most just have the episode listed but no play button under them. If I click on the episode name, nothing happens. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Haven't used it in a while, but once you double tap on the episode it should select it. Somewhere down the list you should find a play button. Re: SpellStack now out on the App Store
Hello, It has taken me a bit of time and some practice, but I think I know the game Spell Stack pretty good. I would be happy to answer questions, and help others start playing this great and challenging game. Now I still do not know everything, but I will help in any way I can. Here are some simple things: * The game board is a 5 by 5 block square. * If you use the roter wheel and switch virtical on, then this will make navigating the game board grid better. This will allow you to swipe up and down, and not just right and left. This comes in handy when looking at a particular column and seeing what letters are in it. * To spell a word, the letters do not have to be in order. They just need to be touching. * You move a letter by simply double tapping on it to select it. Then you go to the square you want to move it to and double tap that square, and the letter is moved to the new square. * You can also move your opponents letters as long as their value is 0. * As far as moving, it goes by columns. In moving a letter, you can only move the top letter of a column. So think of it as letters stacked in columns. So if you move a letter to an empty column, then that letter will automatically be put on the first square at the bottom in that column, no matter where in that column you try to place it. * As far as points, this can vary depending on how your letters are placed. Letters gain points if they are touching and grouped together. A letter that is beside an opponents letter is worth less than a letter that is beside one of your own letters. For example. In the first move of a game, you normally have 5 letters across the last row of the game board. This means you can stack those letters however you want depending on what you want to spell. I normally use 3 to 4 letters for my first word. So I Will group those 4 letters together in a square, 2 letters per column. If you do this and notice, the points of each letter will normally go up. * As a defensive move, it might also help to put the lower valued letters, which are normally more common inside your group of letters to help keep your opponent from stealing them, or accessing them to break your word. * Stealing opponents letters: I think it increases the value of your word if you use one of your opponents letters in your word. You are only able to use an opponents letters if its unlocked. * Breaking your opponents word: You can break your opponents current word by using one of the letters in their word in your new word. If you break your opponents current word, then this nullifies it, and your opponent will get 0 points for that turn. This is a good defensive way of keeping your opponent from scoring points from their current word. But now, sometimes you are not able to break your opponents word, depending on the placement of their letters, and if all of the letters they used are protected. * Locked letters: You can sometimes unlock letters by surrounding a locked letter by your letters. This does not work all the time for me, so I am thinking it depends on the letter and its value. I think a letters value has to reach 0 before it is unlocked. * Submitting a word: Now when you have your word ready to submit, the game will tell you to double tap the last letter of the word to submit, or you can use the submit button. * Making a word: Remember when you submit a word, there has to be room on the board for the word to be made. If the game tells you that the word could not be made, then either the letters were not together, or there was just not enough room in that area of the board to make that word. As the board becomes more full, then of coarse, this becomes more of a factor. * Now when the board does become full, then the board is emptied automatically, and the game will continue with the new board. * I think position of letters has a big factor on how you do in this game. So it is recommendable that you study the board and move your letters to get the most points possible for each turn. I hope all of this helps you learn the game better. Re: Since upgrading my I-Phone to IOS 7, Music Dock no longer plays?
Frankly, I don't see any issues with using the SiriusXm app other than the fact that you need to label the buttons in the dock. You can view the channels by category using the headings on the rotor. The SXM app lets you pull up on-demand shows that you can't get using Music Dock or Radium. Music Dock hasn't been upgraded in years and you can't get a lot of the internet-only channels if you want things like Bob Dylan Theme-Time Radio, Folk Village, Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame channel etc. Radium does provide those channels and is a better option I don't think it has the ninety minute drop out where you have to hit the Keep Listening button on SiriusXm if you didn't jailbreak your iPhone. I just tried logging into Music Dock and it keeps saying that my UserId or password is invalid. Am I crazy or what on Netflix?
Hi. Until recently, instead of fighting with the Netflix app to scroll my instant cue, I would go to the web site on my iPhone, find the title and double tap it there, which would call up the Netflix app and start the flic playing. This stopped working for me about two weeks ago, and Netflix tells me this was never a way to start a movie. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. Re: SpellStack now out on the App Store
Hello Alex, There is a reason why it ask you to move the letter P to column C. It is showing you that moving letters away from your opponents will increase there value. When P is in column D, its value is 2 points. When you move it to column C, if you notice, its value increses to 3 points. So there is nothing else you have to move in this puzzle, just double tap the letters P E T, then double tap T again to submit it, and then you will move on to the next step of the tutorial. I will say a couple of things: In actual game play, you would be able to submit the word pet even if the letter P was in column D, but it does not work for this part of the tutorial because it wants you to see about the increasing of the value of letters when they are away from your opponents. But ultimately, you want the most points for each word you submit, so having the letter P in column C is the best thing since it earns you more points. Next, please notice, that the letters E and T are only connected diagonally. So letters can be touching not only on the sides, but also diagonally to use them. Hope this helps. I'm stuck on the spell PET part of the tutorial, though - the game tells me to move P to column C, then spell PET. I try to make the word by putting P and E in column D, so they form a right angle to T to complete the word, but it doesn't like that. I can't move my T anywhere, so what am I supposed to do exactly? On Jan 15, 2014, at 2:19 PM, Chris Chaffin cchaf...@twcny.rr.com wrote: Hello, It has taken me a bit of time and some practice, but I think I know the game Spell Stack pretty good. * Submitting a word: Now when you

The one huge advantage with using the SiriusXM app is that you can take advantage of the ability to customize what you hear on your music channels. Radium is great if you just want to access the existing channels only, but it does skip a bit once in a great while. I personally think that the SiriusXM app rocks. The only thing missing is the college sporting events that you hear if you have a radio. If that ever becomes available on the app, that would be welcome news to me. Unfortunately, I don't think the colleges and universities would give SiriusXM the wrights to broadcast their games on the app since they have apps of their own which require subscriptions in some cases. On 1/15/2014 2:52 PM, Steve wrote: Frankly, I don't see any issues with using the SiriusXm app other than the fact that you need to label the buttons in the dock. Re: How to know which iPad mini
Hi Fanus, The way to check the exact product model you have of an iOS device is to look at the device model number that is reported under Settings General About. If you're running iOS 7, which you would have to be, if you have a second generation iPad Mini, you can use the three finger quadruple tap gesture to copy that information to clipboard. So one way to get this information would be: 1. Launch Settings 2. Flick right to General button and double tap 3. Focus will move to the About button, which VoiceOver announce. Double tap anywhere on the screen to select this. 4. Focus will move to the Name entry, e.g. Fanus's iPad 5. Flick right until you reach the Model entry 6. Do a three finger quadruple tap. VoiceOver will say Model xxx copied to pasteboard. Once you have copied the model number information to the pasteboard, you can switch to Safari, and do a search on that model number. I was able to modify the above list of numbered commands tomadd a step 5a, where it set the rotor to Words, and navigated to the model. This only gets the portion of the model identifier before the slash character, but I found I was able to navigate to the Everymac.com Ulimate Mac Lookup page at: http://everymac.com/ultimate-mac-lookup/ I set my rotor to Form controls and flicked down twice to the text field for Enter Mac, iPod, iPhone or iPad Identifier:, double tapped, then set my rotor to Edit, flicked to Paste, and double tapped to paste in the model identification code up through the slash. Flick right to the Lookup button and double tap. you may find it easier to do this with the corresponding keyboard shortcuts on a paired Bluetooth keyboard. I believe VO-Shift-C works under iOS 7 to copy the last spoken phrase to clipboard just as it does on the Mac. The web page refreshes, but if you navigate back to the form control for the search field, and read all from there, you'll hear a complete description of the iPad model, generation, carrier, intro date, etc. Having said this, there are other, and probably easier ways to ID the model of your iPad. In the U.S., Canada, U.K., and most European countries, I would simply go to the Apple My Support Profile page and log in with my Apple ID. This is the Apple ID you used to register the device when you set it up. (Unfortunately, I have two Apple IDs, since my first Apple ID was created for purchasing from the iTunes Store, and doesn't follow the convention of having an email address for the Apple ID format.). just check under whatever Apple ID you used to register your device. You can Google Apple My Support Profile, or use the following URL: https://supportprofile.apple.com This comes up with a U.S. location for me, and with an optional link to switch the geographic location: https://supportprofile.apple.com/localeSwitcher Notice, there is no specific entry for South Africa or other locations in Africa. in Latin America, only Mexico is listed, although there are quite a few countries listed in Europe, and Australia, New Zealand, and Japan are listed in the Asia/Pacific region. If you do log in with your Apple ID at My Support Profile, you'll have a record not only of the specific model of your registered products, but the serial number, and many other detailed specifications. I think you can also find out the information if you connect your device to iTunes on your computer, and read through the identification information on the tabs associated with the device. You could also try to do a web search on the Model number. As for the distinctions between the first and second generation iPad Mini, the processor speed in the new models will make a big difference if you are using Audiobus compatible music creation apps, and using multiple Audiobus-compatible music apps to combine input sources or recording. This includes apps like GarageBand, Thumbjam, and over a hundre other of the more powerful music creation apps that were designed to be Audiobus compatible so that the outputs of these apps could be used as the inputs of other Audiobus-compatible amps. On older devices with slower processors, the performance will lag and stutter, with minimal specs for the fifth generation iPod Touch and the iPhone 4S. Even older model devices simply won't be able to support Audiobus sharing, even if they run GarageBand, etc. (e.g., on a fourth generation iPod Touch). The biggest performance gains in processor capability came with the introduction of the iPhone 5c, 5, and 5s (in increasing processor capability), the fourth generation iPad, and the second generation iPad Mini, and iPad Air. All these devices need to get the Audiobus app as well as specific Audiobus-capable music apps, such as GarageBand, if they want to combine the output features of some apps to use as input or loops for other apps. Re: SpellStack now out on the App Store
How do you move the letters. Jen -Original Message- From: Chris Chaffin Sent: Wednesday, January 15, 2014 3:13 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: SpellStack now out on the App Store Hello Alex, There is a reason why it ask you to move the letter P to column C. Chris -Original Message- From: Alex Hall Sent: Wednesday, January 15, 2014 2:28 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: SpellStack now out on the App Store I sort of get the basic idea, I think. This does not

I've notice other gestures not working while default apps are running. For example, the 4-finger tap near the top or bottom of the screen has been elevated to an art form to make it work. I can make it work 3 out of 4 times in practice mode, but trying to jump to the end of long lists like my contacts, it only works once or twice out of 4-tries. Anyone else noticed how the iphone 5 thinks you're touching the screen when you're flicking? Re: How do you sign out of netflix when using voice over
Netflix can be a little flakey to deal with. The only way I can get the sign-out to work is as follows. When I'm in netflix I have to double-tap and hold on the screen with 1 finger. When VO makes the sound I scroll upwards. I have to do this several times until the sign-out button is on the screen. I can then double-tap the button and it will ask me if I'm sure I want to sign-out. I double-tap yes and I'm done. The point I am trying to make is you can't just flick to the sign-out button. It will not work that way. There are a lot of places in Netflix that you also can't just flick to. I really hope this helps. It actually sounds more complicated than it is. You will get used to it quickly I think. Re: Imap Weather radio
Hi Daniel. I wouldn't waste my time with that app. I entered a zipcode to a state that's close to me since I live in Canada and after that the app crashed on me while I was trying to add more locations that I'd like to keep an eye on. Also, when the app did decide to cooperate all I kept getting when I tapped anywhere on the screen is Voiceover saying sidebar cell background button. There is an app similar to iMap Weather Radio called Alert FM that uses the same service as iMap weather radio but I can't remember if it asks you for a zipcode or not but give it a try. -- Shawn Sent From My White MacBook -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. Hi Hannah. I've noticed that no one has chimed in yet so I'll give you my $.02 on this. First, your signal strength could be based on where you are. For example, I'm downstairs in my room currently writing this and my phone shows 3 of 5 bars. It's ok at the moment but I know that my signal can drop any minute. If, however, you're in an open space and you're losing signal strength, your assumption could be correct in that there's something wrong with your antenna. Re: how do you select text with a apple keyboard?
hello Anna, things are trickier when readonly text has to be selected. I am quoting from a website. those commands were written for IOS 6.01 but are still relevant. please comment. Copying read-only text using a bluetooth keyboard 1Press the left arrow and right arrow simultaneously to ensure quick nav is on. 2Press left arrow or right arrow to navigate to the phrase that contains the desired text or the beginning of a large block of desired text. 3Press VO+shift+M. You should hear three beeps. 4Adjust the rotor to the unit of text that will be used to select the desired text: characters, words, or lines. 5Use the pinch gesture to increase or decrease the amount of selected text. Voiceover will speak text as it is added or removed to the selection. Note that it appears there is no way to use the keyboard to do this so you must use the pinch gesture. 6Press cmd+C to copy the selected text into the buffer. Voiceover will announce the entire block of text that was copied to the buffer. 7Move focus to an editable text field and press up arrow and down arrow at the same time to disable quick nav so you can edit the text in the text field 8Move the insertion point to the desired location in the text field using the commands defined in the Entering and editing text section of this document. 9Press cmd+V to paste the text from the buffer into the text field. Voiceover will read the entire block of text that was pasted into the text field. quoted from http://support.sas.com/misc/accessibility/education/ios/quickref.html Thanks and regards, Aruni Sharma for android discussions join VIAndroid community on google plus Asst. Live simply, Love generously, Care deeply, Speak kindly And leave the rest to God! - Original Message - From: Gary Bowers gh...@swbell.net To: viphone@googlegroups.com Sent: Wednesday, January 08, 2014 3:16 PM Subject: App Turns Smartphone Into Virtual Cane App Turns Smartphone Into Virtual Cane for the Blind MIT Technology Review January 8, 2014 A smartphone app inspired by Greek mythology has the potential to help the blind navigate indoors where GPS is unavailable. It's easy to imagine that being blind or visually impaired more or less excludes people from using smartphones or tablets. But nothing could be further from the truth. App stores have a dizzying variety of products that help the visually impaired access all kinds of information much more easily than would otherwise be possible. These apps offer audio books, match clothes by colour and even offer games played by hearing and touch alone. But the apps designed to give directions all suffer from the same drawbacks-audio directions are helpful but also screen out other audio such as conversations or the sound of traffic nearby. What's more, GPS does not work indoors so these kinds of systems are of little use in homes and other buildings Now Pierluigi Gallo and buddies at the University of Palermo in Italy have come up with an alternative which offers the blind navigational help without any form of audio distraction or the need for GPS. The approach is surprisingly simple and inspired by the famous Greek myth of Ariadne and Theseus. In the story, Theseus volunteers to kill the Minotaur which lives in a labyrinth on the island of Crete. To help him, Ariadne gives him a sword to kill the beast and a ball of thread to help him find his way out when the deed is done. Gallo and co take a similar approach with their prototype smartphone app called Arianna, the Italian name for Ariadne. (It's also short for pAth Recognition for Indoor Assisted NavigatioN with Augmented perception.) Their idea is to map out a route through a building by sticking coloured tape on the ground. The user then switches on the smartphone camera and points it towards the ground, while placing a finger on the screen. He or she then waves the camera back and forth, scanning the ground for the line. In the meantime, the app analyses the frames produced by the camera, picking out the line as it moves across the screen. When the line passes under the user's finger on the screen, the app causes the smartphone to vibrate, providing a tactile indication of where the line falls. Scanning the smartphone back and forth allows the user to follow the line in the same way as he or she might use a cane (see diagram above). At the same time, QR codes placed on the ground can give the user other information such as the location of places such as toilets, water coolers, shops and so on. Gallo and co say they tested their virtual cane in December at workshop in Boston organised by the Andrea Bocelli Foundation and say it works well. And they plan significant upgrades in future. One idea is to use infrared lines that are not visible but can nevertheless be picked up by smartphone cameras which are sensitive to infrared. This infrared sensitivity is currently an under-used feature of most smartphones, they point out. And that raises the possibility of games and challenges that are equally accessible to the blind and sighted. All in all, this software could be a significant help to the blind and visually impaired. Hi-tech aids for this disability tend to be expensive because they have to be specially designed and manufactured for a relatively small group of people. But with smartphones widely available at affordable prices, much of the technology necessary for Ariana is available off-the-shelf. Gallo and co don't say when their new idea will be available as a commercial app or how much it will cost but it has the potential to be significantly cheaper than a bespoke device. So: useful, simple and potentially cheap. Not a bad combination for an app. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. Re: SpellStack now out on the App Store
Okay, I see what you mean, thanks. I'm now going through my first game… and I don't know what is going on. I get the theory, sort of, but the tutorial never covered making words from enemy letters, or what locking is and how to use it. Gameplay seems confusing at this point, and honestly I'm only still trying to figure it all out because the company has a good reputation. If this were some game I ran across, I don't think I would still have it installed. There must be a better way for the company to explain how this all works and make it seem more engaging and fun as you are working through it. Or maybe that's just me… On Jan 15, 2014, at 3:13 PM, Chris Chaffin cchaf...@twcny.rr.com wrote: Hello Alex, There is a reason why it ask you to move the letter P to column C. Re: How to know which iPad mini
Hello Esther Wow, that's a lot of info. Thank you very much. I shall try. I note that my iPhone 4S gives the model as MD235So/a and the iPad mini gives me800hc/a. I wonder if all the iPhone 4S's and iPad mini 2's have these model numbers and that it is then only the serial number which differs on each device. If so, that's an easy way to identify the product. Regards Fanus - Original Message - From: Esther mori...@mac.com To: viphone@googlegroups.com Sent: Thursday, January 16, 2014 12:01 AM Subject: Re: How to know which iPad mini Hi Fanus, The way to check the exact product model you have of an iOS device is to look at the device model number that is reported under Settings General About. (e.g., on a fourth generation iPod
Re: drop box problem
You might need to give it some time to upload and show in dropbox on your phone. But also remember that in order to then do anything with it you need to be putting the zip file on dropbox. This is probably what you are doing but I am just covering the bases. But there wouldn't be any reason why a NLS file wouldn't show up in dropbox just like any other file as far as I know. I have successfully done this and have transfered several files to the Bard Mobile app with this method. Maybe there is a problem I'm not remembering that somebody else will point out. As long as you are signed in to dropbox I don't think unlinking and re-linking will usually aid in the process though there could be instances where this is helpful of which I am not aware. -- Cheryl I tried and tried to turn over a new leaf.
