On the other hand many gamers want precise and immediate interaction and
there are plenty of game controllers for the idevices available. I doupt

Unfortunately until Apple puts any effort to general keyboard usability on
IOS devices these keypads do not help much except for making flicking and
double tapping faster and more prddictable. Apples's 1D approach for
screen navigation is extremely inefficient. 2D-way, exploring the screen
with one finger is faster but for efficient use one heve to memorize all
the controls on every screen of any application he/she uses.

It is a bit unfair to compare mobile phones to desktop computers but even
sighted ones works more efficiently with keyboard than mouse/touchscreen.

Using the touch screen as blind is similar to using an failing keyboard:
you have every time check that the key press gets through and it was the
correct key that wenth trough.

Re: Announcing a revolutionary remote for iOS VoiceOver users

2014-02-14 Thread David Chittenden
your statement that even sighted folks work more efficiently with mouse and
keyboard than touch-screen is completely inaccurate. This is a field which is
constantly and thoroughly being studied. Research papers are published
extremely regularly on the topic.

First, when touch-screen interfaces are used in information kiosks rather than
visual displays with keypads and navigation devices, user error is reduced from
18-25% to 6-10%. And, this is consistent across every topic / field which has
been studied thus far.

Second, the world record for fastest typing speed on a mobile device in 2011
was held by a person using a touch-screen device. I have not checked more
recent numbers, but considering all the other studies I have analysed over the
past few years, I would not be surprised if touch-screen devices continue
holding speed records for data entry.

Third, there is an upper limit on how many keyboard command shortcuts a person
is able to maintain in one's active memory. Touch-screens, on the other hand,
with their immediate visual response to haptic activation, do not suffer from
the same limitation.

It is comforting for us to tell ourselves that sighted people do better with
keyboards just like we do. However, even though we know people who match what
we wish so much to believe, research from around the world is continually
proving the opposite to actually be the case.

Re: Circulation request: Play an iPhone Game and Help Accessibility Research

2014-02-14 Thread David Chittenden
Without number patterns, number memorisation can go as high as 10 or 11 digits
for a very few people. 6 or 7 digits is the normal maximum. Patterns and groups
of digits can make this significantly larger as long as each group is memorised
separately, and then in relation to the other groups.

For many people, turning each digit into an object can significantly enhance
number recall.

here trying all manner of patterns thinking they're making it simpler, like
2 digitts at a time, and can't remember them unless I can get it converted

A cCard pattern is 16, so long as it's the rhythm. But otherwise, as a

 Hi everyone,

We are recruiting volunteers to play a fun, accessible iPhone game, as
part of an accessibility research study. You can download our game,
DigiTaps, for free from the Apple App Store and play!

We are a group of accessibility researchers in the Computer Science
Engineering Department at the University of Washington. We have created
the iOS game DigiTaps to evaluate new accessible text entry methods.
The game will include a notice of informed consent so you can make sure
that you want to participate in the study before you start playing.
This study is completely voluntary. You may choose to stop playing or
to delete the game at any time.

 Participant requirements:

Participants must be at least 18 years old. Our research is targeted at
people who are blind or low vision, so we encourage all blind and low
vision people to participate. However, sighted people may participate
 as well.

If you have any questions, please join our Google Group and post your
 questions at

Chess-wise 3 and more

2014-02-14 Thread Richard Turner
I have been corresponding with Marcel Nijman about Chess-wise 3.
There are a couple bugs which he will be addressing today and hoping to have a
fix in the app store early next week.
When you double-tap on a piece, VO does not say that the piece is selected.
Also, in setup, the clear board button does clear the board, but VO still says
the pieces are in there starting position until you double tap a piece on the
board.
He is going to fix bowh of those today and submit the update.
He also mention an online game that he really likes, but is not VoiceOver
accessible.
He has suggested the developer add VoiceOver support, which Marcel thinks could
be done in one day, but he has not gotten any response.
He thinks requests from blind users might help.

The app is called Social Chess.developer of SocialChess is Lee Carlson and his
email address is feedb...@woodchop.com

Push.co app

2014-02-14 Thread Alexandra - Keinohrhasenfan
Hello,

I just downloaded the push.co app and created an account. I want to use it
on an iPhone 4S running iOs 7.0.4. Unfortunately, the app doesn't seem to
be too accessible with VoiceOver. Logging in worked fine, but when I tried
to subscribe to content, it got worse. When I tap on featured apps nothing
at all happens. And when I tap on view all apps, it says loading push
apps before the screen freezes and VoiceOver doesn't speak anything. After
that, there's only the heading all push apps but no content can be read.
Next to this, I can only find the back button which is, by the way, labelled
as UI bar button item back circle. Why not only label it back? Anyway,
right now, I can't use the app at all, as it doesn't seem to be possible to
subscribe to content neither from within the app nor from the website.
Unfortunately, the developers don't provide an email address or any other
contact details on their website apart from a Twitter account - at least, I
couldn't find them.

Regards,

Alexandra

Stopping notifications from a particular app

Hi Everyone,

I have an app on my phone and I cannot get the notifications to stop.
Under settings the app is listed under do not include. I have turned

I have banners selected for my alert style. I don't want to receive
anything from this app because they send way too many notifications.
How do I get rid of these notifications short of uninstalling the app?

Without number patterns, number memorisation can go as high as 10 or 11
digits for a very few people. 6 or 7 digits is the normal maximum. Patterns
and groups of digits can make this significantly larger as long as each
group is memorised separately, and then in relation to the other groups.

For many people, turning each digit into an object can significantly enhance
number recall.

However, sighted people may participate
 as well.

If you have any questions, please join our Google Group and post your
 questions at
 https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/mobileaccessibility
You can download the DigiTaps game at

Proliferation of Document Barcodes and QR Codes

2014-02-14 Thread Alan Lemly
As my vision has waned and my loathing of paper increases in leaps and
bounds, I'm often thinking about ways easier than OCR scanning to get access
to digital documents.

I've noticed that much corporate correspondence I get contains QR codes on
the document usually near an address. This has sparked my curiosity and made
me wonder if we could use those to get information easier than scanning the
document with an OCR app. I assume that such QR codes are keys into a
private database used by the company making it easier for those who need the
information to get it with a SmartPhone or other digital method. But I'm
hoping for some sort of confirmation from those of you who have experience
with QR codes on documents. I've tried scanning these document codes using
an appropriate app on my iPhone but as expected, nothing happens.

I'm trying to envision a day when documents could be accessed from a
cloud-based server via a simple scan of a QR code using an iPhone. I realize
with privacy concerns and all the private companies involved, this access by
ordinary citizens is extremely unlikely but a dream has to start somewhere.

Thanks for any comments.

Re: Proliferation of Document Barcodes and QR Codes

2014-02-14 Thread Marianne Denning
This is very interesting. What about the program using a code that is
transmitted to the company holding the electronic document. That
could be used to be sure only qualified people have access to the
document. I know there are many problems with this suggestion but it
is dreaming right with you.

On 2/14/14, Alan Lemly wale...@gmail.com wrote:
As my vision has waned and my loathing of paper increases in leaps and

I've noticed that much corporate correspondence I get contains QR codes on
the document usually near an address. This has sparked my curiosity and
 made
me wonder if we could use those to get information easier than scanning the
document with an OCR app. I assume that such QR codes are keys into a
private database used by the company making it easier for those who need
 the
information to get it with a SmartPhone or other digital method. But I'm
hoping for some sort of confirmation from those of you who have experience
with QR codes on documents. I've tried scanning these document codes using
an appropriate app on my iPhone but as expected, nothing happens.

I'm trying to envision a day when documents could be accessed from a
cloud-based server via a simple scan of a QR code using an iPhone. I
 realize
with privacy concerns and all the private companies involved, this access
 by
ordinary citizens is extremely unlikely but a dream has to start somewhere.

 Thanks for any comments.

Re: are there any blue tuth ear peaces that are vo accessible that you could by say in a stor and not on line?

2014-02-14 Thread Rick Alfaro
To set the record straight, not every single BlueTooth headset works
with VO. The headset/earpiece has to support A2DP. Without that support,
you won't hear VO. Most of the newer BT sets support this but not all.
Be especially careful of the real cheap ones.

Best By and Best By Mobility carry a few with one of them being the
Plantronics Legend that has been discussed here quite a bit. Locally,
you will probably pay about $100 for it. Much cheaper from amazon but
that's your preference. HTH

Hi,

I am not sure what you mean by VO accessible. Wouldn't any

have worked fine with it.

To set the record straight, not every single BlueTooth headset works with
VO. The headset/earpiece has to support A2DP. Without that support, you
won't hear VO. Most of the newer BT sets support this but not all.
Be especially careful of the real cheap ones.

Best By and Best By Mobility carry a few with one of them being the
Plantronics Legend that has been discussed here quite a bit. Locally, you
will probably pay about $100 for it. Much cheaper from amazon but that's
your preference. HTH

I am not sure what you mean by VO accessible. Wouldn't any
bluetooth audio device work with Voice Over? All that I have tried
 have worked fine with it.

You can FaceTime someone using their email address, assuming they've set

Re: U.S. Olympic Hockey

2014-02-14 Thread Keith Bundy
I have only done this from the iPhone, so don't know how it will work on the
computer. But, on the iPhone, download the Sirius app. Once it is installed,
open it, and it will take a few minutes to download all of the info it needs.

You will then have to enter your username and password. Once you are logged in,
double tap the button on the bottom left of the screen to get a list of
categories. Through the top of the screen and flick right until you get to
Sports.

Double tap Sports, then go back to the top of the page and start flicking
right. You will hear all of the various things being broadcast, and US Olympic
hockey should be one of them, once it is on the air. I believe tomorrow
morning's game starts at 6:15 a.m. central time.

Let me know if you need additional clarification. I hope you find it smoothly.

UsA channel and NBC sports. To watch the streams on the website, you’ll

I believe that hockey is usually on USA, and many complete replays are

Re: are there any blue tuth ear peaces that are vo accessible that you could by say in a stor and not on line?

2014-02-14 Thread Rick Alfaro

Hi Scot.

It will work with the device strictly as a headset for receiving and
taking calls using it's hands free protocol. It would not be able to get
spoken directions from navigation programs for example. You need the
A2DP support for that kind of stuff including VO, although you could
probably hear Vo during a phone call but at a much reduced fidelity,
just like a phone call quality. Even though A2DP is often referred to as
A2DP stereo, it still works with mono headsets at a much higher quality
than non-A2DP headsets. Hope I explained this properly.

HTH
