I wouldn't if I were you. I turn everything connected to the phone line
off including the phone itself. I have personal hotspot on my iPhone as
part of my plan so can share the data connection with my iPad, Pc or Mac

Re: Audio Recording Apps

2014-04-02 Thread Richard Turner
I have no idea about input off and on.
The keyboard comes up for me when I am relabeling a button and you just delete
what is there using the delete button like editing any other edit box.
If you are not getting the onscreen keyboard,, something is odd.
You don't have a bluetooth keyboard paired or something?

If you have a Bluetooth keyboard in range, the virtual keyboard will not
show up.
If this is the case, turn off the keyboard or press the show/hide button for
the virtual keyboard, usually found in the top right corner of the BT

Clear record

Hi, I have clear record installed yesterday in my IPhone 4s. All buttons and
all are clearly labeled but, when I hit record, which has a mike phont, nothing
happens. I had my daughter who is sighted try and she says that it is not
recording. I have tried many test recordings and no matter how long I record,
it says, recording too small, discard. What could be wrong? I know I heard
this on AppleVis but no instructions. Actually, it should be straight forward.

Re: the differences between text grabber and text detector

2014-04-02 Thread John Diakogeorgiou
Like with most types of apps you can find more than one in a category
to do what you want. Different people prefer different apps which do
the same thing. As far as these go I've had different levels of
success with both apps depending on what I am trying to scan.
For some reason Text Detective wants the phone turned to landscape
mode. Turn it so that the home button is to the left. First choose the
scan button. Then place the phone around 6 to 8 inches above the page
you want to scan. Someone else can probably better speak to the
placement than I have since I haven't used the app as much as I
should. Once placed where you want it, double tap the start button
which is the farthest on the right. The app will tell you if it was
able to scan an image and when it is finished. Flick to the right till
you hear the results of the scan. I would also suggest listening to
the tips tab to get some better ideas on how to use the app.

Bubble Island and Facebook question.

2014-04-02 Thread Bluesman02

Hi all,

I'm hoping some of you can help me with this one!.

I have a couple of Facebook contacts who don't play Bubble island. and so
are getting quite annoyed with the request for Lives from me. .

My question is; is there any way of removing the contacts who don't play the
game, and so don't want to be bombarded with requests from me?. but still
allow me to keep them on Facebook itself?

Hope this makes sense.

VO Accessible Apps for practicing Spanish

2014-04-02 Thread Lisa Soulor
Hello,
I found 3 VO accessible apps for those who are learning Spanish and
want some fun practice. All 3 are free.
Hangman for Spanish Learners by IrgSoft
Worder Free "Spanish Version"
Spanish Vocabulary by Zoburga; this app has several free levels and
can be added onto for $.99.
I'd be interested to know if anyone else has found any other Spanish
learning or practice apps that are accessible.

RE: Using your I device in a thunderstorm with WI Fi.

2014-04-02 Thread Pinky
Hi
A surge protector in my opinion will not stop a lighting strike as they are
very high voltage. A surge protector will only stop small electrical spikes
or surges.

If your iDevice isn't plugged into anything then yes it's safe to use.
If by a modem, you mean something plugged into your phone line or cable
connection then that would not be safe, unless you have the modem plugged
into a surge protector. I've seen surge protectors for electrical and phone
lines, but I'm not sure I've seen them with ethernet or co-ax connections.
Of course, if your modem contains a wireless router or is just connected to
your wireless router, and you're using your PC, Mac or iDevice wirelessly
then your PC, Mac and iDevice would be safe, but your modem and router would
be at risk. I've been good over the years about plugging things into an
electrical surge protector, but not so much phone lines, co-ax or ethernet
connections.
I've only lost one router due to a lightning strike during a Thunderstorm.

Re: VO Accessible Apps for practicing Spanish

Thanks for sharing this, Lisa. I do some work in Nicaragua each year

I have found a particular podcast, Coffee Break Spanish, to be very
helpful and, of course, accessible.

Okay on the recording app

2014-04-02 Thread Andrew J. LaPointe
Hello again, I am not getting any feedback on the clearrecord app so, I
purchased the trial of list recorder. Now this app works but, with the full
version, can you send the recorded file as share to my e-mail or download it to
my computer? With the $.99 version, I can delete the file or there is another
option which says I don’t have something or other. What I need to do is record
a meeting or lecture or notes and get it off my 16 gig Iphone 4s so I don’t eat
up too much room... I think though, if I can get clear record to work, it
would have many more features to do things like, slow down the speech rate for
slow people like me and other things. Please give me your feedback. Thanks so
much, Andy and Shubert

2014-04-02 Thread Cheryl Homiak
Yes, on the iphone you have to swipe to the fourth page and I seem to remember
doing the same thing on my ipad recently. Even then i seem to remember you may
have to click "sign up" first and then a sign-in button but this problem has
been posted about many times so a google search may get you the exact
instructions.

Re: Keyboard, Display, and maybe gesture reference

2014-04-02 Thread Woody Anna Dresner
Hello cheryl,

The folks at National Braille Press thought your suggestion was a good one, so
I have compiled all the reference sections of getting Started with the iPhone
into a reference card, and NBP will publish it. I don't know when it will be
available, but I'll let everyone know when it's out. It will contain a
description of all the gestures and buttons and what they do, as well as
Bluetooth keyboard and braille display commands. Thanks for the great
suggestion.

Best,
Anna

iPad stand best for doing facetime

2014-04-02 Thread Cheryl Homiak
I have a keyboard stand = my iPad Air: the Logitech Ultra-Thin keyboard cover.
I do also have another bluetooth keyboard I use with the iPad. I find that when
using facetime people can usually see me best if the iPad is standing pretty
much straight up in portrait orientation. While I can put the iPad in the stand
that way it doesn't seem as secure as in landscape orientation and the stand
tilts the iPad anyway so that people often can't see much more than my eyes and
maybe my nose. I do find that I can put one of my big hard-covered braille
volumes behind the iPad and it seems to stand nicely but an accident certainly
might happen without more support than this. Can anybody recommend a stand that
will allow the iPad to stand up straight in portrait mode and still be secure.
Thanks for any suggestions.

Re: Audio Recording Apps

2014-04-02 Thread Annie Skov Nielsen
Hi Richard.

I have bought such an extention cable, but mine is a little difficult to get
the lightning adapter on the iq5 to fit in. I think the best way to go would be
to contact the manufacture of the iq5 maybe they could recommend a short
extention cable or start to produce them, and maybe in the future, make the
adapter a little longer on the iq5, it is simply to short.

Best regards Annie.

BARD Mobile and Earpod Remote Inconsistency

2014-04-02 Thread Alan Lemly
I constantly use my Apple earpods with my iPhone 5 and really enjoy its
remote and volume buttons. Now that I'm starting to use my BARD Mobile app
as opposed to my Stream to read more NLS books, I'm noticing an
inconsistency with the earpod remote button. I would expect that when
reading a book with BARD Mobile, pressing the remote button should stop and
start playback. However, even though I can get this to work sometimes, more
often than not pressing the remote button will start playing whatever song
is currently selected in my music. I can go back to BARD Mobile and press
the rewind button a few times or press the play button to start and stop
playback a few times and this will sometimes cause the remote button to be
in what I'll call "BARD Mobile" mode and work as expected. But I've yet
figured out the magic button presses to make this work every time. It seems
very random.

Does anyone else experience this behavior and have you come up with a
workaround to get the earpod remote button to work correctly with BARD
Mobile?

Thanks in advance for any comments.

stitcher

2014-04-02 Thread Kevin Wassmer
Hello folks. my name is Kevin Wassmer. I haven't posted much to the
group. But I do have a question about sticher. I updated the sticher
app on Friday. I can not get any podcast to play now. I did deleet
sticher and down loaded downcast. But I love sticher. Why can I not
get the podcasts to play on Sticher? Have any of you had this issue
with Sticher. Perhaps I will stick with Downcast. I just don't like
the fact that Downcast downloads podcasts to my phone. It's one thing
to notify me that a feed has been updated. But audomiticly downloading
something can be anoying. This is because the iPhone has internal
memory only. But if I can't get Stitcher to work, then I will just
keep Downcast.

Hello,
I found 3 VO accessible apps for those who are learning Spanish and
want some fun practice.

Re: how can one export a vcf file of iPhone addressbook?

2014-04-02 Thread Woody Anna Dresner
Hi Cris,

Do you sync your iPhone address book with an app, such as Outlook in Windows or
Contacts on the Mac? If so, I think exporting the address book from there would
be easier than trying to do it on the phone. Each contact on the phone does
have a Share Contact button, so you could get individual contacts to other
devices that way. It's possible there's an app that can do it too, but I don't
know whether there is one.

Best,
Anna

Rob, check out Duolingo as a starting point for learning. The apps I

RE: Can't get past the splash screen on iPad dropbox app

2014-04-02 Thread Bill Holton
Thanks. That did the trick.

Playing with Dropbox on the iPad, just another reason I do not like the tablet
as opposed to my iPhone. This app is very busy on the iPad, hard to figure out
how to “open with” for a file.

Keep stumbling into it, though.

Thanks.

Yes, on the iphone you have to swipe to the fourth page and I seem to remember
doing the same thing on my ipad recently. Even then i seem to remember you may
have to click "sign up" first and then a sign-in button but this problem has
been posted about many times so a google search may get you the exact
instructions.

Re: Context disappearing and then reappearing

2014-04-02 Thread Rob

Hi,
It sounds like you are using two contacts lists.
I had this problem because sometimes I was adding contacts to the all
contacts list, and sometimes to the iCloud list.
I solved it by going to settings and choosing the iCloud as the default
for contacts. so I hope this helps you. go check the all contacts tab
and the iCloud tav to see if you find the missing contacts.

adding contacts to favorites will not remove them from the contacts list.

Thanks,
Rob

Re: Okay on the recording app

2014-04-02 Thread Richard Turner
You can Email the file from the share button, but if it is larger than about 5
Mb, you may find you can't send it because of the limits of Email systems.
You can use file sharing in iTunes to save the file to your computer.

Re: Alternative to ITunes

If you have wiFi, check out UbiDisk in the app store.
its a easy way to transfer files from the PC to the Ubidisk app. You
will play and view the files from within the ubidisk app and not the
iPhone's music player.
another simple way is to use DropBox to share your files between the PC

just in case you dont use DropBox, here is a link.

That is the default behavior, if you want to turn this off go to
Settings,

Notification Center, Messages.
Almost at the bottom look for "Repeat Alerts". This will say
"Once" which

means your alerts repeat once after 2 minutes.
Double tap on it and set it to "Never" if you want to just get a
single
alert. Your choices are Never, Once, Twice 3 Times, 5 Times and
10 Times

and it will always repeat in 2 minute intervals.

Sieghard

Don't notice that. But still get notifications sounds twice,
once when it

arrives and then two minutes later. Annoying.

Talking goggles how to use it?

2014-04-02 Thread Andrew Lamanche
Hi Listers,

Is there a description anywhere available how to use Talking Goggles on the
iPhone? I must admit I'm totally stumped. I can't make out how to use the
application, nor can I locate a help file or brief tutorial as, for instance,
TextGrabber offers.

Any help please.

just hold and then swipe down like I am Moving down a list?

Re: Alternative to ITunes

2014-04-02 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
Hi, if you have a dropbox account you could put the files there and then
use the Dropbox app or another app like Voice Dream to import the audio
books. In the case of audio books, and Voice Dream Reader, put the books
into a zip file for each. Put them in Dropbox. Then open them from Voice
Dream Reader itself. If it's just music, you can play it right from the
dropbox app itself.

No iTunes is required for this. Also, despite what some might say about
iTunes, it's bloated and yes, it can make computers run slow. Especially
if they are older than 1 or 2 years.

Re: Can't get past the splash screen on iPad dropbox app

2014-04-02 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
Hi, keep in mind that many iPad apps, Dropbox included use a split
screen mode to display things. So, you might have files and folders on
the left, and the contents on the right. Using the container rotor will
help.

Yes, on the iphone you have to swipe to the fourth page and I seem to
remember doing the same thing on my ipad recently. Even then i seem to
remember you may have to click "sign up" first and then a sign-in button
but this problem has been posted about many times so a google search may
get you the exact instructions.

Re: Talking goggles how to use it?

2014-04-02 Thread Caitlyn and Maggie
Hi Andrew,

I choose video mode in talking goggles. This is right on the home screen after
you open the app.

After that, I make sure the flash is enabled. This is on the home screen as
well.

After this, I move the phone over whatever I am trying to identify. You have
to wait a few seconds, but soon it will actually say what you are looking at,
not using the IOS voice.

I hope this helps. I don't think I left out a step, but you might have to play
with the app a bit.

deleting mail from server on iPhone 5s

2014-04-02 Thread Larry McCreary
Hello,
I am trying to set my iPhone 5s to delete mail from server. I have checked the
advanced options to delete mail from server after deleting from inbox. I have
heard of people doing this but I have never had any success with any iPhone I
have owned. I am looking to remove messages and never see them again on any
machine I am using.
I am on pop3. Any help would be appreciated.

Ootunes Recording

2014-04-02 Thread SSEric

I have figured out how to set a recording time and length. What I don't know is
do I have to have the app open? Also, is there a way to record without the
station I am recording playing, other than just turning the volume all the way
down.

All pointers will be most appreciated!

Don't know about the other app but in downcast you can set it to not download

Go to settings in the more tab of the app.
Here you'll find it.

How do I get calendar event entries to play a sound

differences in what Siri says with and without voiceover

Hi, I just asked Siri what it was like outside. She gave me the high and low
temperature and other weather facts. When I turn off voiceover, She simply
says, "Here is the forecast for today and tomorrow." She puts the other

different. It's not something I need to know, I was just curious when I
heard the difference.

Re: BARD Mobile and Earpod Remote Inconsistency

2014-04-02 Thread Arnold Schmidt
Although it is better now, this problem has been around since the beta tests,
and they, for whatever the reason, couldn't get it straightened out before the
final release. I have had the best luck getting the start/stop button to work
correctly, after it malfunctions, if I hit the on screen play button again
while whatever I didn't want to start playing is still playing. This problem,
plus the skipping backward for no reason, which seems to be a little worse in

That is the default behavior, if you want to turn this off go to Settings,
Notification Center, Messages.
Almost at the bottom look for "Repeat Alerts". This will say "Once" which
means your alerts repeat once after 2 minutes.
Double tap on it and set it to "Never" if you want to just get a single
alert. Your choices are Never, Once, Twice 3 Times, 5 Times and 10 Times
and it will always repeat in 2 minute intervals.

Don't notice that. But still get notifications sounds twice, once when it
arrives and then two minutes later. Annoying.
