Airplay is a proprietary technology by Apple that allows wireless
streaming of media content, usually audio but video is supported too.

Hi Eric,

As Chris pointed out, Apple has put Airplay into the Control Centre, I
assume mostly in order to streamline the interface of its apps such as
Music, Podcasts etc. As you already noticed the MLB at Bat app still
has its
own Airplay button and so does Audible to give another example. It
takes a
bit of getting used to at first, but in a way it does make sense to
have it
centralized in Control Centre because I might be playing music via
Airplay
and check my email or make a phone call and this way I can bring up the
Control Centre from any home screen or app and control Airplay.

I am not sure what the purpose is of having your Philipps show up as
a WiFi
network. Often a device would show up here to do some initial
configuration.
One example of this is the WiFi Thermostat from Radio Thermostat.
When you
first hook it up it shows up as a WiFi network and you have to
connect to
it, then bring up the Netatmo app and do some initial configuration. You
actually join the thermostat to your home network this way, once you
connect
to it and bring up the Radio Thermostat app you are prompted to make
a few
selections, then a list of available WiFi networks shows and you
select your
home WiFi and enter it's password. Once the thermostat is connected
you go
back to WiFi and rejoin your home WiFi on your phone, then you return
to the
app to finish the setup of the thermostat. Once it's done it will no
longer
be visible in your list of available WiFi networks.

I am not sure which model of Philipps speaker you have and what you
do to
join the speaker to your home WiFi. But since a speaker just like the
thermostat has no interface on its own where you would select which
network
you want and where you can enter the password of your WiFi, I very much
assume that you do this also on the phone. In any case, if the
speaker is
already connected to your WiFi you will definitely not have to switch
to it
and your phone or any laptop remain connected to your WiFi.

If you go to Airplay in Control Centre and you can't see your Philipps
speaker as an option then it is not properly joined to your WiFi. By the
way, I find the quickest way to find Airplay which is on the bottom
right
above the bottom row of icons is to touch the bottom left of the
phone and
find the Flashlight app, then swipe once to the left and you are on
Airplay.
If your phone is connected to your WiFi and there is no Airplay then
that
means no Airplay devices are found. If you have problems just send me
the
model of your Philipps speaker and I can probably help you out.

As far as the future of Airplay is concerned, I highly doubt it will go
away. You always find lots of discontinued stuff on Amazon especially
when
it comes to electronic accessories. There are always new models and
hence
others who are discontinued. Apple devices continue to be as popular
as ever
and therefore accessories which work with said devices will also
continue to
be popular. I would definitely not worry about Airplay going away any
time
soon, it won't happen.

Sieghard

First, a general question. Is Airplay no longer an option in the
Music app?
I don't see it on my iPhone 5 or Touch running the latest IOS.. I am
sure it
used to be there, but I don't play music all that often and never had
cause
for Airplay, so I am not sure when it disappeared. Is there something
you
must do to activate it in the Music player?

Specifically, I bought a Philips Airplay enabled speaker. It requires
that
you acquire your network. I then bring up Wifi on my phone or Touch
and can
see the new option for Philips. This is fine, except that if I switch
from
my home network to this new Philips one, which is attached to my home
network, I can then no longer stream via wifi. Is this just the way
it is?

By the way, with regard to my first question about Airplay not
showing in
the music player, the way I was able to play music was to first
select the
Philips from Airplay in the MLB At Bat app. I then switched to Music and
played music

An acquaintance with an iPhone 4 wonders whether there are alternatives
to Siri which would work on her 4. I remember some persons using Vokul.
However, when I tried it, Vokul was notorious for getting incorrect

Voice Over. So I'm llooking for Siri alternative Suggestions.

Thanks for ideas.

I think, Lire would be a good choice for you. It can cache the full text of all
the articles and it provides a very nice and efficient reading experience. The
current version also supports Feed sync with Feedli, which gives you a nice
cross-device or even cross-platform experience.

I believe that all the other RSS clients mentioned here do not perform a
full-text cache. However, someone who uses them might tell us about. I tried
them, but found their reading experience not as good as in Lire.

There was a one-time fee to be able to cache an unlimited number of articles.
However, I couldn't find this option mentioned in the App Store description,
any more. Maybe it has been dropped.

Greetings

Jan

I have unlimited data plan and I do not want to have my iphone filled with

I also wan tto be able to delete/remove the articles that have been already

Does Newsify have all these features? Or is there any other rss reader

Thank you for your help in advance.

Re: Siri alternatives

2014-04-15 Thread Alan Paganelli
There is voice commands. They have or I should say had both free and paid
versions. The app is certainly no match for Siri but it worked well enough
for simple stuff like web searches and basic stuff. I tried the free
version on my iPhone 4 and it was totally accessible with VO. I have no
idea if it's still around because 6 months in apps can be a long time.
Anyway, I hope this helps.

An acquaintance with an iPhone 4 wonders whether there are alternatives
to Siri which would work on her 4. I remember some persons using Vokul.
However, when I tried it, Vokul was notorious for getting incorrect
numbers. A couple of other such programs seemed to completely turn off
Voice Over. So I'm llooking for Siri alternative Suggestions.

Thanks for ideas.

Re: Lire or Newsify

2014-04-15 Thread Alex Hall
I prefer Lire for reading. It does cache, but you can turn that off if you want
to. It also has outstanding Voiceover support, from letting you know when
downloading is done to letting you customize what information is spoken in
article and folder lists. The main feature it lacks that I absolutely love in
Newsify is the option to remove items to the selected one. If you are going
through a few hundred articles and have to stop after moving through fifty,
Lire has no options for you. In Newsify, you can tell it to mark all the
articles up to the current one as read, removing them from the list so that
when you come back later to finish looking at your articles, the ones you've
been through are gone.

gives you a nice cross-device or even cross-platform experience.

I am not sure what the purpose is of having your Philipps show up as
a WiFi

configuration.
One example of this is the WiFi Thermostat from Radio Thermostat.
When you
first hook it up it shows up as a WiFi network and you have to
connect to
it, then bring up the Netatmo app and do some initial configuration. You
actually join the thermostat to your home network this way, once you

assume that you do this also on the phone.

By the
way, I find the quickest way to find Airplay which is on the bottom

above the bottom row of icons is to touch the bottom left of the
phone and
find the Flashlight app, then swipe once to the left and you are on

Apple devices continue to be as popular
as ever

Hi All,

One other feature about the Plantronics Voyager Legend is, when your using the
Legend, the battery remaining status is shown on your iPhone just to the left
of the iPhone battery status. The Legend shows it's status in 10 segments.
Oddly enough though, instead of saying 100 percent, 90 percent etc, it shows
remaing power as 99 percent, 88 percent, etc. Never the less, the feature is
very helpful. When I'm out and about and sitting on my butt waiting in some
waiting room, I can check the status of my ear peace and gage how much time I
can waste reading or other such thing. I can then decide if I want to continue

Re: Lire or Newsify

2014-04-15 Thread Craig Werner
Hello, Richard.

I suggest starting with Lire. Its interface is uncluttered, and its
settings are laid out well and have very understandable descriptions.
The added fee for caching large numbers of articles has been dropped.
The caching options allow the user to turn off automatic caching and
also for disabling the downloading of images, very helpful for
VoiceOver users. It's true that you cannot read through a list of,
say, fifty articles and then delete this list before proceeding to the
next bunch of articles, but if you wish, you can flick down with one
finger and delete each article separately if you decide after reading
its title that you don't want to read it. The fact that Lire now
supports Feedly means you can have a truly cross-platform experience.
Be aware that if you leave caching turned on, Lire may take a very
long time to cache a bunch of articles.

I wouldn't at all dismiss Newsify. However, its settings are more
sophisticated and have descriptions that don't give adequate clues as
to their functions. It's a very rich reader, though, and should you
wish to graduate to it, you may well be pleased with it. VoiceOver
support is very good. It supports stand-alone mode and also a Feedly
account.

Feeddler (note the double D in Feeddler is also an excellent app.
Its main advantage is that it supports synching with a number of RSS
services: Bazqux, The Old Reader, FeedHQ, the AOL Reader, and
Inoreader. However, it does not support Feedly. VoiceOversupport is
very good.

Any more questions, feel free to ask.

By
the
way, I find the quickest way to find Airplay which is on the bottom
right
above the bottom row of icons is to touch the bottom left of the
phone and
find the Flashlight app, then swipe once to the left and you are on

Sieghard

Hello Tom, I use the Gmail app but to answer your question I don't think
there's a way to make it remember your place. However within the Gmail app if

Re: OT? Turning The Remote Feature Off On One's router?

2014-04-15 Thread Steve
I think she is talking about setting the router so that it is impossible to
make changes to its settings wirelessly. We do need to know the specific
model of the router in order to give specifics.

In general, you should find something on the administrative or system
settings page that will say allow changes to be made to the setup remotely.
On some routers, this is a checkbox which should be unchecked.

Also, another known vulnerability in routers is the WPS that pushes settings
to a wireless device. This is easily hackable, and it should be disabled.

I'm not familiar with this term. What do you mean by your router's
remote feature? Do you mean you want to turn off it's wifi radio? It
would help to know what brand of router you're talking about. For
example, on my NetGear and LinkSys/Cisco routers, I use my web browser

Re: Voiceover saying the time after the screen has been locked

2014-04-15 Thread David Chittenden
One of the first things I learned as a researcher is, correlation does not
equal causation.

Whenever iOS receives something important, the device becomes active. When it
becomes active, the time is usually announced. In your case, the device
downloaded an email which was assessed as being important (usually because the
sender's name is in one's VIP folder), so the screen was activated and the
particular emails were displayed. These emails are not displayed in the
notification center, but they activate the importance monitor.

I believe that all the other RSS clients mentioned here do not perform a

them, but found their reading experience not as good as in Lire.

There was a one-time fee to be able to cache an unlimited number of

Hello everyone,
Does anyone know where I can find a list of all the keyboard commands for
using VoiceOver with a bluetooth keyboard? I have forgotten some of the
commands, and it would be cool to get a refresher on them. I like to use my
keyboard with my phone sometimes, and having another way to use my phone
other than by using just the touch screen is cool.
Thanks. :)

RE: Lire or Newsify

2014-04-15 Thread Richard
Craig and everyone Else,

Thanks for the great advice. I purchased Lire and I am looking forward to
playing with it.

Subject: Re: Lire or Newsify

Hello, Richard.

I suggest starting with Lire. Its interface is uncluttered, and its
settings are laid out well and have very understandable descriptions.
The added fee for caching large numbers of articles has been dropped.
The caching options allow the user to turn off automatic caching and also
for disabling the downloading of images, very helpful for VoiceOver users.
It's true that you cannot read through a list of, say, fifty articles and
then delete this list before proceeding to the next bunch of articles, but
if you wish, you can flick down with one finger and delete each article
separately if you decide after reading its title that you don't want to read
it. The fact that Lire now supports Feedly means you can have a truly
cross-platform experience.
Be aware that if you leave caching turned on, Lire may take a very long time
to cache a bunch of articles.

I wouldn't at all dismiss Newsify. However, its settings are more
sophisticated and have descriptions that don't give adequate clues as to
their functions. It's a very rich reader, though, and should you wish to
graduate to it, you may well be pleased with it. VoiceOver support is very
good. It supports stand-alone mode and also a Feedly account.

Feeddler (note the double D in Feeddler is also an excellent app.
Its main advantage is that it supports synching with a number of RSS
services: Bazqux, The Old Reader, FeedHQ, the AOL Reader, and Inoreader.
However, it does not support Feedly. VoiceOversupport is very good.

Any more questions, feel free to ask.

Craig

 Hi,

I'm looking for an accessible rSS reader and have been reading about lire.
I want one that can download all articles so I don't have to be
connected to read. As well, the reading experience must be clean and
uncluttered. I understand though that there is a subscription price
to lire beyond the purchase price. Can anyone tell me how much the
one-time subscription price is? As well, does anyone have any other
suggestions as to RSS readers; I've heard of newsify. Thanks in
 advance,

 Richard Quan

Re: Sony TV Side View

2014-04-15 Thread Christopher J Chaltain
Have you downloaded it and given it a try yet? I tried similar apps from
Yamaha, Onkio, Pioneer and Denon, and they all had a demo mode.
Generally you just pick demo from the list of devices you want it to
work with and you can take it for a test spin. You won't be able to
access all of the features, but you should learn enough to know if it's
accessible or not. I haven't tried this or similar apps from Sony though.

Why do some contacts not have the option for setting a default ringtone?

2014-04-15 Thread Paul Ferrara
All, I was rearranging information, trying to set default ringtones for a few
contacts, and I noticed that some had “notes” as an option where ringtone would
normally be. It did not matter if these numbers were iPhones, other mobile
numbers, home phones, or main numbers.

Can anyone explain this oddity and offer a solution?

Paul

couple prizmo questions

2014-04-15 Thread Lori Dent
Hi all,

I have three questions I want to ask about prizmo.

1. How do I name a document ?
2. When I take a picture of a document with the quick capture and after it
scans it it says results. I do a 2 finger flick up so it can read the document
but it won't read the document it will read everything around the document
but the document. So, how can I get the results to read the document? I've
tried and tried doing a 2 finger flick up on the results page to get it to read
the document but it won't read. Please help?
3. When I save a document, where does prizmo save it at and how do I find it?

Any suggestions and help would be appreciated. Thanks.
