Re: Siri

2014-07-12 Thread Tristan
Hi Hope,
If you're running iOS 7, go to Siri settings, General > Siri. Plug in
your device, either to the wall or your computer. Then, go down to the
voice selection field -- I forget the exact name. change the gender
from male to female, or veisa versa if you have the female voice
selected.
Once this is done, the setting change will trigger your device to
download the necessary files for the high quality voice.

Re: Very Weird Problem with iPhone 5C and Anchor Wireless Keyboard

2014-07-12 Thread Teresa Cochran
Hi, David,

I don't think the Anker keyboards support all the VO functions. I have one as
well. The command-VO-arrow keys don't seem to work for me, either. I think
there's a disclaimer in the VO-specific list of keyboard commands that
indicates they are for the Apple wireless keyboard.

Right you are, I guess I should have paid more attention when I read Hope's
message. Even though she said "SIRI shounds different" I just jumped to the
conclusion that she needed to download the high quality Voiceover voices.

Tristan's method should do the trick, if it doesn't then changing the SIRI
language from, for example American English to British English and changing
it back will work as well.

Hi Sieghard. Actually the Siri voice doesn't have anything to do with
Voiceover so your below steps won't work. Hope, have you tried plugging in
your device? I found that after plugging it in and waiting a while, the more
expressive voices downloaded. Give it a shot. I hope that helped.

Hi, Joseph,

Just going backto an earlier thread to let you know that I found the escape
key equivalent for the Anker ultraslim keyboard I have. It's fn+home key.
Now I can move apps outside folders with my keyboard. Yay. :)

In this case it was stumbling rather than diligence. I suddenly had a flash of
an idea, and said to myself: "I wonder what would happen if I press ... these
keys". I tried it first in keyboard help mode and couldn't believe my ears.

Re: Fingerprint.

2014-07-12 Thread John Panarese
I have had the same experience with Sieghard. I had to redo all my prints
and just stuck with one print for the two fingers I usually use. When I set up
the prints, I made sure I set my finger down from several angles during the
creation process. Also, remember that when you place your finger on the home
button, it must be firmly set. Also, be sure it's not damp or too cold either.
These factors seem to effect recognition, so, for example, if you have just
washed and dried your hands and your finger might still be cold.

Keyboard Repeats in Spotlight Search

2014-07-12 Thread Teresa Cochran
Hi, all,

I'm wondering if anyone else has this problem, which acts like a bug to me.
When using my Braille display or even occasionally my bluetooth keyboard, if I
go to the "search iPod" field and type something, I get endless repetitions of
a random key, and I have to reload Voiceover. This doesn't happen with the
onscreen keyboard. Does anyone else notice this?

Thanks,
Teresa

Yes. This happened to me today while typing a text message with my Braille
display. I posted about this a week or two ago and someone said it had
something to do with battery life, but both my phone and my Pronto notetaker
were fully charged at the time. The first time this occurred was before the
last update.

RE: Square card reader

2014-07-12 Thread Karl Smith
Hello Fellow square users or attempted users.

At the NFB convention I spoke with someone who is using Square with a splitter.
It appears that what you need is a 4 pin splitter which in effect separates’
the microphone and headphone circuits in the iPhone headphone jack such that
you can use a headphone and a separate microphone rather than one with the
single jack. Well, I got one of these from Radio Shack for about $5.00 and it
appears to get me a bit further down the road to working. I get audio through
the headset jack and plug my card reader into the other jack. The software gets
to the enter credit card number or swipe screen but no matter what I do the
card won’t register when I swipe it. I do occasionally get a card not charged
message and if I unplug the reader the message reader disconnected comes up
indicating that it knew the reader was there. Can anyone tell me what the
secret is to swiping a card? Is there something I’m not getting? I should also
say that I tried swiping the card with just the reader plugged directly into
the iPhone and then removing it to get audio back to see if maybe the reader
really isn’t connected correctly through the splitter but it still doesn’t
work. I should also say that I know this reader can work as the guy that cuts
my lawn has borrowed it on occasion to use on his own iPhone. Any suggestions?

Karl

Yes, and it would not work at all once the reader is plugged in. I found that
the easiest way to handle it was to plug it in to swipe, then unplug it to get
speech back.

I’d love to know if anyone has been successful with a splitter or with
Bluetooth. I found that they did not work for me.

Lois,

Did you experiment with a splitter to find out if you could use a headset with
the square reader and have speech output through it?

I did some expensive experimenting yesterday to see how the square reader
worked with blue tooth, etc. Bluetooth headphones do not work with the card
reader plugged in, even if you turn it off and back on after plugging in the
reader. The splitter also did not work with regular headphones even though
the splitter would work if only the reader was plugged in. Maybe, it is
some sort of security feature that is built in. The only way to use the
reader is to plug it in to swipe the card, then take it out again to sign
and finish the transaction. The Bluetooth comes back when you take the
reader out, likewise the wired headphones.

If you have silence when you unplug the reader, you will know that the swipe
was successful and you are at the signature screen. After signing, you wait
until you hear it was successful. Before that, there is no speech. I will
get used to it eventually.

So, it does work, just has a few quirks.

Good luck,
Lois

Re: Fingerprint.

2014-07-12 Thread Alan Paganelli
When I did my finger prints, when I heard lift your finger, I lifted my finger.
When I heard, place your finger, I then placed my finger in a slightly
different place for example, the first time more on the tip of my finger.
Second time, the tip of that finger as if I were typing on a keyboard. Each
time, I made the scan slightly different. I have no problems at all getting
the finger print read by the scanner. I used my thumb and index finger of both
hands as these would be the fingers I would most often use.

Making phone calls on an iPod

2014-07-12 Thread Donald L. Roberts
I would like to know if there are options other than Skype for making
outgoing phone calls from a fifth generation iPod.

I downloaded the Vonage IOS app thinking that it might be an option, but
it won't work on an iPod as it requires a mobile phone number to be
inserted during the setup process.

Please let me know of other viable options. Thanks.

What's with the Siri behavior when on LTE?

2014-07-12 Thread Kramlinger, Keith G., M.D.
Hi,

Siri works well for me when on WiFi. When on LTE it cuts out very early, to the
point it's not useful. Any ideas or help?

For example, I ask Siri to Find tom's Music Store. Siri says, I found one
close" And then it's done. On WiFi, it tells me full details and asks me if
that's the right one.

Thanks in advance. Keith

Re: Determining When A Third-party Keyboard Battery is Low?

2014-07-12 Thread Alan Paganelli
Ok, at the risk of sounding like a wise guy and it is not my intent, when the
keyboard no longer lets you type anything. The bluetooth rechargible keyboard
I use can go for about 2 weeks before it needs to be charged back up. It only
takes 3 hours from totally dead to fully charged so it's not like it's the end
of the world. If I remember and I usually don't, I try to recharge it once a
week.

Re: Making phone calls on an iPod

2014-07-12 Thread Alex Hall
If the person you are calling uses an iPhone or has set up their Mac, you can
FaceTime or FaceTime Audio call them. This requires only their Apple ID email
address, or the phone number of their iPhone. You can also receive calls the
same way, just like you do iMessages. For non-Apple people, you might have a
harder time of it, though Skype is really a nice option.

Yes, and it would not work at all once the reader is plugged in. I
found that the easiest way to handle it was to plug it in to swipe,
then unplug it to get speech back.

I’d love to know if anyone has been successful with a splitter or with
Bluetooth. I found that they did not work for me.

Lois,

Did you experiment with a splitter to find out if you could use a
headset with the square reader and have speech output through it?

I would like to know if there are options other than Skype for making
outgoing phone calls from a fifth generation iPod.

I downloaded the Vonage IOS app thinking that it might be an option, but it
won't work on an iPod as it requires a mobile phone number to be inserted
during the setup process.

Please let me know of other viable options. Thanks.

Re: Very Weird Problem with iPhone 5C and Anchor Wireless Keyboard

2014-07-12 Thread 'David Goldfield' via VIPhone

Teresa,
thank you for your response. The name of the keyboard, which I should
have specified in my initial message, is the Anker T300. Every other key
combo works well. As a matter of principle, I'd likely return it but
the original packaging isn't in the most usable state. The VO-command
combo with arrow keys work; the keyboard just seems picky about whether
the left command or right command key is used. Other than this one
quirk, I haven't noticed other combinations which don't work. I can
live with it but I find it annoying and I've never encountered such a
thing on non-Microsoft keyboards for Windows computers. Again, thanks
for at least confirming that this isn't just me.

Hi, David,

there's a disclaimer in the VO-specific list of keyboard commands that
indicates they are for the Apple wireless keyboard.

went into keyboard help with Vo-K, this key combo is silent, as though it's not

Hi all,

Just thought I would add that the procedure I outlined below is just like
sending a file through Dropbox. The major difference is that you will be
using Microsoft's OneDrive, but this also means you will have some 5gb or
7gb of space for free. Here is more info:

OneDrive (formerly SkyDrive) By Microsoft Corporation Free
Compatibility: Requires iOS 7.0 or later. Compatible with iPhone, iPad, and
iPod touch. This app is optimized for iPhone 5.

Description

OneDrive (formerly SkyDrive) is the one place for everything in your life.
Easily store and share photos, videos, documents, and more. When you upload
photos or videos from your iPhone or iPad to OneDrive, you can get to them
when you're on your PC, Mac, tablet, or phone. With OneDrive for iOS, you
can easily get to, manage, and share files on the go:

. Automatically upload photos and videos to OneDrive using Camera Backup.
. Browse all your OneDrive files and files shared with you.
. Share files by sending a link in email or getting a link to copy and
paste.
. Move, delete, and rename files, and create new folders.
. Open your OneDrive files in other apps, including Office Mobile for
iPhone.
. Quickly get to documents you've recently opened.

Hi Joe,

To share/send a file via OneDrive on iOS:
1. Make sure you are on the "Files" tab (double-tap bottom left-hand corner
of screen).

2. From top of the screen swipe to the right and pick from various
categories such as Documents, Entertainment, Music, etc. Double-tap on one
of these items as it is actually a folder.

3. Swipe to and double-tap on the following item: Toolbar overflow.
Double-tap on "Select items."

4. On this new screen you will be shown a list of your files. Double-tap on
a file to select it. Keep in mind that when you double-tap on the name of
the file, it will be selected, but VoiceOver will not convey this to you. If
you go to the very top line of the screen you will be notified of the number
of files selected.
Note: to deselect a file, simply swipe to it and double-tap again.

5. After files have been selected, swipe to the "Share button" and
double-tap. You will be presented with options such as "Send link in email,"
or "Copy link to clipboard.

6. Which ever you choose, you will be presented with a prompt asking you to
specify if the person can simply view the file or edit too. Make a choice
and double-tap on it.

7. You will now go through the normal email procedure.

Hope that helps, and please let me know if you have any further questions.

see how to share files via e-mail and such. Thank you in advance for any

Re: Determining When A Third-party Keyboard Battery is Low?

2014-07-12 Thread Teresa Cochran
No, unfortunately, there is no status indicator either for my keyboard or for
the Braille display. I don't find anything in the settings info areas, either.

Re: Determining When A Third-party Keyboard Battery is Low?

2014-07-12 Thread Cheryl Homiak
My braille display gives me its own warning and I do sometimes get warnings
about my Logitech keyboard also. Some keyboards do show the battery level in
the bluetooth menu in extras if you hold the option key down when accessing the
menu but some don't.

Re: Screen curtain!

2014-07-12 Thread Gmail
If you want your brightness to stay at zero, you'll have to make sure to turn
off the auto brightness setting in settings/brightness and wallpaper. Then you
can turn your brightness down to zero and it will stay there. I do things this
way because I rarely give my phone to sighted people. If I do need to show
someone something, I just turn up the brightness using the control center, then
turn off VoiceOver. When they give the phone back to me, I just turn VO back
on, turn down the brightness, and continue with what I was doing earlier.

Thanks,
Ari

Re: KNFB Reader App

2014-07-12 Thread Devin Prater
Yes, it reminds meow the bookshare read2go app. $20, and it's barely updated,
and hasn't even taken advantage of the iOS7 voice api openings and all that,
and we still have to switch sections to get to more content than a section or
chapter rather than it automatically scrolling. $20 for a dead app, and $99 for
the same mortality of apps, for the blind. Voice-dream, however, services all,
and is updated a lot.

Re: Determining When A Third-party Keyboard Battery is Low?

2014-07-12 Thread Flor Lynch

On the Freedom Scientific braille displays - such as the focus Blue - if
you turn off voiceover (or the computer) and navigate on the display,
you get its battery percentage remaining. Also the leftmost cursor
routing button blinks when it gets to below 10% (I think).

No, unfortunately, there is no status indicator either for my keyboard
or for the Braille display. I don't find anything in the settings info
areas, either.

LOL, I know it seemed like an obvious question, but I was looking for
telltale warning signs, like maybe some keys not registering, etc. and
hopefully not having the keyboard simply stop working before it needs
a charge.

Hello.

Has anyone experienced the following with their 5 S Fingerprint?

I for example have set up a number of fingerprints on my 5S and a week
later, none of them are recognised. This has happened to me since I bought
my I phone from the Apple store. Well as I've sold this phone now so that I
can buy my next I phone from the Apple Store when it's out hope that the
Fingerprint will work better.

Thanks.

Re: KNFB Reader App

2014-07-12 Thread Alex Hall
That seems an unfair assumption to make, given that we have no information.
MBraille is a blind-specific app, but it gets regular updates, the developer
runs a discussion list for his product, and he is responsive to user feedback.
I'm just saying we can't know the future of any app if said app hasn't even
been released yet. Plus, to my knowledge, this will be this company's first ap,
so we have no reputation to use as a guide.

2014-07-12 Thread Ron Pelletier
Sieghard,

The cuts and residue on fingers is the reason why I scanned 3 fingers in one
hand and the thumb and index in my left hand. That way, no matter what,
there is always a finger that works. I mostly use my right index or right
thumb but, if needed, I have 3 other fingers.
I never lend my phone to anyone so I didn't need any spare print
possibilities. If a telephone is shared, well, you can't use them all
yourself

When I first got my 5S I read somewhere that the recognition is more
successful if you scan, for example, your right thumb on 2 or 3 of the
available 5 spots. I did this and just as with you it worked well for a bit
and then it got worse. After the 7.1 update which was supposed to bring
improved recognition it actually got worse for me. Then at one point I
decided I would delete all my prints again and start over. I did this and
set up my right thumb just on the first fingerprint spot. Ever since this my
recognition rate is I would say very close to 100% and also much faster. I
think having scanned my thumb 3 times on different spots just caused the
processor to do unnecessary calculations and it apparently did more harm
than good. I also found that the success rate is much better if you don't
use the very tip of your finger but use the pad of your finger sort of half
way between the fingertip and the first joint. I only use the fingertip when
it asks you to scan the edges of your finger.
Like I said, I couldn't be happier now, it's fast and works absolutely
fantastically with the only exception being when I just done a bunch of
woodworking and I might have little cuts on my finger, glue residue or stuff
like that, but that's to be expected.

Sieghard

RE: Fingerprint.

2014-07-12 Thread Ron Pelletier
Hi,

If you are a Braille reader, use the same part of your finger you would use
to use Braille. Not the tip.

If those of you who use to use an optican, that is how I placed my thumb and
index finger alternatively to get the finger print to recognise. I will try
it again though and see what happens.

Thank you.

Re: Determining When A Third-party Keyboard Battery is Low?

2014-07-12 Thread Teresa Cochran
To be honest, the keyboard I got was less expensive, but I will probabl get an
Apple one when I get an iPad. I couldn't pass up the good reviews and $30 US
discount on this one from Amazon. :) I also wanted to experiment to see if a
bluetooth keyboard was a good option for me. It apparently is.

Yes, my Braille display does this. My keyboard, according to the forum posts
I've seen, doesn't even have a visuual meter. So I'll just expect it to start

Hi, Cheryl,

I'm assuming you're referring to the menu extras on the Mac? I no longer have a

Re: KNFB Reader App

2014-07-12 Thread David Chittenden
This is an incorrect statement. KNFB Reading Technologies developed and sold
the KNFB Reader for Nokia Phones running on the Symbian platform. As I recall,
they came out with one or two updates per year, so that is what I will
initially expect from them with their second app.

Also, KNFB Reader for Nokia did not invent anything. The OCR software they used
for the Symbian platform came from a company in England. The page edge
detection for Symbian platform came from a company in Europe. This was easy to
figure out by going through the list of copyrights and trademarks which was
included with the KNFB Reader.

I have already tracked down probable OCR technology and page detection
technology apps for iPhone that I suspect KNFB Reader is utilising for their
$99 app.

I was a little surprised to read that NFB sponsored $11.5 million for the
iPhone app. For the Nokia app, KNFB Reader utilised over a million dollars of
federal research grant moneys.

Yes, these are some of the reasons why I am very cynical of the extremely high
pricing of the app. I have no doubt it will work as advertised.

One final comment: taking a picture of a PowerPoint presentation from 22 feet
away and having KNFB Reader recognise it was purely a publicity stunt. I can do
the same with any other OCR app and it will work just as well, so long as the
image of the print is in focus.

Good point. I was thinking of iOS apps specifically, but in retrospect, of
course this company made the original KNFB application and hardware solution.
Thanks for pointing that out.

Well, that gives me pause about this app.

I don't think there's one app I rely upon for regular use that hasn't
undergone regular upgrades, as newer devices are introduced and newer
versions of iOS are released. I'm hesitant to consider investing $99 in
what might be a "one and done" app whose developer isn't inclined towards
maintaining cutting edge functionality with the latest hardware and/or
 software developments.

Text Grabber Not Capturing The OCR With The StandScan Pro

2014-07-12 Thread Eileen Misrahi
Hello All,

I finally sat down to organize my paperwork using Text Grabber and the
StandScan Pro. I did swap out my case on the phone to see if this was
contributing to the lack of capturing the text in OCR. I changed out the phone
case and received the same problem of the famous error message of make sure ...
I am running the current version of Text Glabber and I was wondering if others
were having the same issue. I know there is text on the item I am attempting to
scan, so that's not the problem. If any one has some other tips for me to try,
send them my way. In the mean time, I'll keep playing around in positioning the
camera in the aperture on top to see where the sweet spot is.
Thanks for your help in advance.

Best,
Eileen

Help, I think I broke my copy of Prizmo.

2014-07-12 Thread Julia

Hi list.
Today I was experimenting with scanning free hand with Prizmo. My
first attempt wasn't very successful, so I changed some settings in the
hopes of better results. I have no idea what I did, but now the app
won't work properly when I use quick capture to try to take a picture of
the text. When I double tap the button, it now says take picture
heading, and sits there for a minute or two, even when I hit cancel, the
app still vibrates like it is detecting a page. It does eventually
sometimes take a picture, but not the speedy way it did before. The
settings I changed are, detect text orientation from off to on,camera
flash from auto to on, I set the recognition language to English, and I
changed the paper size to U.S. Letter. I have tried deleting the app and
downloading it again, but it looks like it remembered my previous
settings. Is there perhaps a way to set it back to default? I didn't see
any option like that.

Any suggestions about how to fix this problem would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Julia

Make certain the camera lens is over the hole in the top. If you do not have
the lights in the stand ScanPro turned on, you also need to make certain the

Re: Text Grabber Not Capturing The OCR With The StandScan Pro

2014-07-12 Thread Eileen Misrahi
Hello David,

Of course, the lights are on in the StandScan Pro and the camera is (what I
think) is properly positioned in the aperture whole on the top of the StandScan
Pro. For one who has gotten almost a perfect scan on the first attempt of each
scan, this is a new behavior for me. That's why I posted. In the past, the only
time I received the error was if the page was blank or if there was some funny
font the app didn't like. There must be something different about the current
version. Maybe Sandy will pipe in. I nicked named her "the queen of OCH'"

Thanks for your post.

RE: Determining When A Third-party Keyboard Battery is Low?

2014-07-12 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Teresa,

The Apple Wireless keyboard is quite nice, but I think the Logitech K811 is
nicer. It's just as small, feels just as well-made but it has 2 big
advantages:

1. It has a physical on/off slider on the right side instead of that silly
button on the Apple Wireless keyboard which inevitably gets pushed if you
have the keyboard in a bag or backpack.
2. It is capable of being paired with up to 3 devices so if you have, for
example, an iPhone, an iPad and an Apple TV you can pair all 3 devices with
the keyboard and simply pressing F1, F2 and F3 will allow you to select
which device you want to control. Whichever device you pair first will be
F1, the second device you pair can be selected with F2 and F3 obviously then
is for the last device you pair.

Another nice feature is that it's rechargeable via a standard USB Micro
cable so no batteries to replace.

Regards,
Sieghard

To be honest, the keyboard I got was less expensive, but I will probabl get
an Apple one when I get an iPad. I couldn't pass up the good reviews and $30
US discount on this one from Amazon. :) I also wanted to experiment to see
if a bluetooth keyboard was a good option for me. It apparently is.

Re: Bluetooth speakers

2014-07-12 Thread Gmail
You could also try a pair of logitech UE Booms. If you get two of them, you can
use an app produced by the company to pair both of them and have stereo output.
I haven't done this yet, although I have one speaker. I plan to buy another
when money affords. They're normally $200, but you can find them on eBay for a
bit cheaper. The seller I bought mine from, who is based in Canada, is called
something like North Electronics. The speaker arrived on time and undamaged, so
I would do business with the seller again. I'll post the sellers name once I
find it.

display worth keeping an eye on.
