Re: Fantastical 2.1

2014-07-27 Thread Krister Ekstrom
The problem with the feature allowing you to type a common sentence and have it
be translated into an appointment is that this only works in English, which is
a great big show stopper for me. In fact, i don’t understand why Fantastical is
even released here in the Swedish app store when you can’t operate it in
Swedish. Luckily the exact feature is present in the MacOs calendar and it
works in Swedish.

 Hi,

What I love about Fantastical is you can write a sentence such as:
Appointment on Monday at 2:00 PM.

This will put in an event with those specifications. There are other
sentences you can say, but that is just an expample.

Yes, when you create an event, it is also on your native calendar, so you can
see it on your compputer as well.

are people finding it much smoother to use the fantastical calendar? I do
use reminders a lot but I like being able to just hold in the button to
quickly launch Siri to create a reminder. I assume using the reminder
part of Fantastical will just take launching the app first, but is just
as easy? Also I read that the mac version is not as accessible with VO.
Does anyone know if that has changed? One of the things I love most about
the native reminders app is having a reminder pop up on my iMac and
iPhone, and can dismiss very easily. Just wanted to get the most recent
 opinions of the app. Thanks,

Hi Trey,

You have to purchase the books on your computer or perhaps you can through
Safari, though I haven't tried that way yet. You can't buy through the
Audible app though..

Once you have purchased a book, it will show up in your library in Audible
after a refresh, and you can download it to your phone at that point.

Let me know if I can help more.

If you are referring to where you turn notifications on and off for all of
your apps, then that can be found in Settings in the Notification Center.

Once you flick past your notification settings, you will come to a list of
your apps. Just double tap on the app you want to adjust the notification
settings for that app.

Hope this helps,

Since you do not have anything in your today view, I am wondering if your today

To check, and to choose what you have displayed in your today view, just go

It might be iCloud backups. If you have old backups, especially if said backups
contain large apps, your iCloud storage can fill up fast. If I recall
correctly, go to Settings iCloud Storage and Backup Manage Strage. From
there, you should be able to see old backups, decide which apps get backed up,
and so on.

Fwd: Looking for a good Bluetooth keyboard recommendation

2014-07-27 Thread Jennie Facer
HHere is a message from a friend that for some reason cannot post to the list.

TO THE WORLD YOU ARE SOMEONE, BUT TO SOMEONE YOU ARE THE WORLD!

Begin forwarded message:
In the meantime I wanted to pass along a tip on a great little Bluetooth
keyboard that costs half as much as the Logitech K810. It is the Sharkk 3.0
bluetooth keyboard. It is a tiny bit smaller than the Logitech and it
supports all 3 operating systems, iOS, Windows and Android all on the one
keyboard. You use simple commands to switch between them. Unlike the
Logitech the function keys are regular function keys meaning if you use it
with Windows keystrokes like alt+f4, insert+f11 etc all work where as on the
Logitech you would need to download and install utility to make that work.
It has great battery life and for those who want it it is back lit with a
choice of 7 colors and brightnesses. Perhaps the best part is that it only
costs $29.99. I own one and a friend of mine just got one and both he and
his wife like it much better then the Rivo keyboard which they say is much to
tiny. She says she wished she had one of these instead.Btw, it defaults to
 iOS for the keyboard configuration.

Well, I need to run but I hope you are doing well and let me know what all is
 going on.

Well, I need to run but I hope you are doing well and let me know what all is
 going on.

Hi, his original question was if there was an app that recorded in MP3. REV
records in M4A. Of course, you can always convert these.

I find the normal voice quality to be of lesser quality than DropVox, but
you can always go to the high quality voice at about twice the size. You can
either have it automatically sent to drop box when you save it, or you can
do this manually when you are using wireless. By the way, they suggest using
wireless to transfer. I think figuring out how to fix your DropVox would be
very nice.

The real problem here is if one needs to edit either of these file types

You can change between devices with the Logitech keyboard by using the F1, F2
or F3 function keys. You don't need to download any app to do this. I have this
keyboard and switch between Windows 8.1 and IOS effortlessly.

 Begin forwarded message:
In the meantime I wanted to pass along a tip on a great little Bluetooth
keyboard that costs half as much as the Logitech K810. It is the Sharkk
3.0 bluetooth keyboard. It is a tiny bit smaller than the Logitech and it
supports all 3 operating systems, iOS, Windows and Android all on the one
keyboard. You use simple commands to switch between them. Unlike the
Logitech the function keys are regular function keys meaning if you use it
with Windows keystrokes like alt+f4, insert+f11 etc all work where as on
the Logitech you would need to download and install utility to make that
work. It has great battery life and for those who want it it is back lit
with a choice of 7 colors and brightnesses. Perhaps the best part is that
it only costs $29.99. I own one and a friend of mine just got one and both
he and his wife like it much better then the Rivo keyboard which they say
is much to tiny. She says she wished she had one of these instead.Btw, it
defaults to iOS for the keyboard configuration.

Well, I need to run but I hope you are doing well and let me know what all

Flagging emails?

2014-07-27 Thread Alex Hall
Hi all,
I started messing with flagging emails as an alternative way of tracking them,
instead of just unread status. On the Mac, I can flag a message with one of
several different colors, and VO reports the color I used. On iOS, though, it
just tells me if a message is flagged or not, which is not nearly as helpful
when I have multiple flagging choices. Am I missing a setting, or is iOS just
not going to tell me the color? Is this even a VO problem, or does iOS itself
only support a binary flag system? I'm using iCloud mail, if that matters.
Thanks.

How to properly restart your iDevice

2014-07-27 Thread Joseph FreeTech
Hi all,

I often come across listers suggesting to others ways of restarting their
iDevice in the event of a problem including using the power button and the
Home button which seems extreme, so I thought I would post the proper way of
doing so as suggested by Apple:

Turn your iOS device off and on (restart) and reset

Learn how to turn off and on (restart) and reset your iPhone, iPad, or iPod
touch.

How to restart
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button on the top of your device until the red
slider appears. Then drag the slider to turn your device completely off.
Personal note: for VoiceOver user this means hold power button for at least
4 seconds or until you hear: Power off, slide or double-tap. At this point
simply double-tap the screen and wait for about 30 seconds for the full
shutdown to complete.

After the device turns off, press and hold the Sleep/Wake button again until
you see the Apple logo.
Personal note: for VoiceOver users this means press and hold the power
button for about 4 seconds then release the button and wait for about 30
seconds for the full restart--you will eventually hear VoiceOver begin
speaking.

How to reset
You should reset your device as a last resort and only if you can't restart
it.

To reset, press and hold both the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons for at least
10 seconds, until you see the Apple logo.
Personal note: it is specified that you should only use this method if you
can't manually shut down as described in the first part of this tutorial. In
other words, make all effort to shut down and restart properly, and if that
doesn't work, then choose this Sleep button+Home button procedure.

Re: How to properly restart your iDevice

2014-07-27 Thread Joseph FreeTech
I fully agree about the need for a quiet power-up-process tone, but when
pressing and holding the power button to restart, if you simply count to 4
to allow 4 seconds to pass, you will be very certain the iDevice will
eventually turn on--this has never failed me. Don't second guess what is
going on because you will be tempted to start messing around with the power
button and this can cause problems. Smile. Just know that after releasing
the power button, if you wait about 30 seconds your device will begin
speaking at which point you can enter your pass code if you are using one. I
will add that if you walk away thinking you will be right back, you can miss
the first spoken message informing you that the restart has completed. If
this happens you will be left wondering if the device has turned on or not,
but once again, if you have allowed for at least 30 seconds to pass, you can
safely press and quickly release the power button to turn on your device
with no fear of interfering with the restart process.

Sorry so wordy and repetitive, but I want to convey as much necessary detail
as possible for any new iOS users out there. Smile.

Turn your iOS device off and on (restart) and reset

Learn how to turn off and on (restart) and reset your iPhone, iPad, or iPod

Re: Teaching Siri to pronounce names - Solution

2014-07-27 Thread Jan Kleinhans

Hi

I was wondering if you were only to change the last name, would you still
speak out the whole contact name then, as the name might be spoken
correctly, but you only want to change the surname for instanse?
I have a few contacts where the first names are okay, but I would want to
change the surname spoken.

Thanks for an interesting topic.

Subject: Teaching Siri to pronounce names - Solution

Ok all, couldn't resist, so I experimented a bit more, and here is how I
used Siri to change how it pronounces odd names:
1. Ask Siri to Contact x (where X is the person with the oddly spoken
name).

2. Regardless of Siri's answer, press the Home button to essentially cancel
the request.

3. Now, press the Home button once again and say the following to Siri:
That is not how you pronounce X.
Note: remember, X is the person's unusual name.

4. Siri will ask you: Ok, how do you pronounce the name X? Siri will wait
for an answer, so go ahead and say out loud the person's name.

5. After saying the person's name, the next prompt you will get is Siri
asking: Ok, thank you, which pronunciation should I use?

6. At this point use a 4-finger single tap to go to the top of the screen
and swipe to the right to read the screen. When you reach Play option 1
you will double-tap to hear the new Siri pronunciation. You will probably
get three choices, so listen to them in the same way just described. when
you are ready to make a choice simply double-tap on the Select button
associated with the desired option.

7. You will be asked to choose a pronunciation for any remaining parts of
the person's name such as left middle and last name.

8. When the process has completed, you will hear one of two messages:
Thanks for correcting me on that, I'll pronounce it as X from now on.
or
Great, I'll pronounce it X from now on.
If you are not presented with these Siri replies, it is likely the changes
did not go through so try again.

9. If all went well, press the Home button to close any remaining Siri
screen.

10. Now test your pronunciation changes by asking Siri Contact x. You
should hear Siri speak the new name.

If you can get this feature to work, it is very, very cool!

Hi all,

Came across the following instructions to teach Siri to pronounce foreign
and uncommon names more naturally. I could not get this to work. Hoping
someone will post better instructions. Smile. For now, its definitely
possible as this YouTube video demonstrates:

? Teach Siri to Pronounce Contact Names Correctly in iOS 7 - iPhone
[How-To] - YouTube
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hPcYB3bysFQ

Here are the written instructions:

Teaching Siri How to Say Complicated Names

If you want to teach her how to properly pronounce a name, just open up Siri
and tell her, That's not how you pronounce [name goes here]. From there,
she'll give you several options as to who's name you want her to learn, if
she doesn't already recognize it.

As an example, I used Marielle Escobar from my contacts. Siri pronounces the
first name as Marielle, when it should be pronounced Mary-Lee, so I opened
up Siri and said That's not how you pronounce Marielle.

Siri then asks me, OK, how do you pronounce the name (Marielle)?

I then pronounce the name the correct way (Mary-Lee) and Siri gives me three
options to choose from, all slight variations of Mary-Lee, if not exact
replicas. If none of those sound correct, you can tell Siri again. If an
option works, press Select.

Once you select it, Siri will ask you about the last name. You can pronounce
it as well, even if it's already correct. It will then do the same thing
again, giving you three options to choose from. Once you're done, Siri will
say, Great, I'll pronounce it First Name, Last Name and you'll be ready
to go.

No more Siri massacring our exotic names.

Re: Fantastical 2.1

2014-07-27 Thread Bill Gallik
To answer Alex Hall's question to a degree; one feature available in
Fantastical that I've not found in the native calendar app is the ability to
create an entry based on a positional day of the week. What I mean by this is
the ability to set an entry that repeatedly occurs on the first Monday of each
month, the third Thursday of each month or the last Sunday of each month.

I use these examples because they are, in fact, repeated events that I have
created via Fantastical.

The beauty of this is that after creating the entries via Fantastical, the
native calendar app will recognize such entries correctly.

over iOS' default Calendar app? I find Calendar easy enough to use, and have
never really had problems with it. It's not the best, but it's fine. I guess
I'm wondering what features people like about Fantastical that make it worth
it? Also, will Fantastical hook into iOS' calendars? That is, if I make an
appointment with it, will that then sync to iOS, and from there propagate
through iCloud to sync with my Mac's default calendar app?

I use the 811, its built for the mac. But you can pair it to 3 devices, and
it’s the best one I have ever used!

I have the 810 as well. It's a very sturdy keyboard.
