Subject: accessible sudoku

Hi all. I’m looking for an accessible sudoku game for the iphone. I
already know about sudoku for all, but I’m looking for something that does
automatic pencil marks. Does anyone know of such a game?

Thanks.
Holly

I have already reported this to Apple Accessibility.

RE: wi-fi cutting out on 6+

2014-11-05 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Gary and Mary Anne,

I understand your frustration, but while a few people seem to have WiFi issues,
it does not to be anywhere near a large percentage. I have a 5S and WiFi works
as good as it always has. I have been using iO?S 8 throughout the entire beta
cycle since Beta 1 in June and while I agree that there are problems and also
feel that Apple should have had some of these fixed by the time iOS 8 was
released, I had no WiFi issues throughout the beta cycle. I really wonder what
the variables are which cause these issues. You also mentioned a friend who is
only using text messages. What issues does he have with regular phone calls?
Once again, I am not aware of major bugs here except that for some people call
display announcements don't seem to work or not work consistently, but that
doesn't affect the actual phone call.
As for Mary Anne, I have not seen any messages with information as to what you
have tried to fix this. Have you done a reset all network settings and, if all
else fails, a reinstall of iOS 8.1 including setting up as a new device?

Regards,
Sieghard

point where I don't even carry the phone around with me anymore. I have a
friend who has decided to go voiceless in terms of phone contact and deals
solely in text messages and getting out only one of four has become more of a
waste of time than I can justify. For what it's worth, I called my carrier and
asked whether I should consider upgrading to the 6 or 6 plus.
The salesman said I'd be having similar problems to what I have now. Yeah, I
can listen to football games on the weekends and I have a clock app which I
enjoy hearing, but those are decidely secondary aspects of why I wanted this

I have I5 iPhone % and have been losing wireless since upgrade to IoS 8.
It is terrible. I must keep my cellular turned off or it will use my
data. Have to go to settings and turn wifi off and on again. Sometimes
that won't even work. I have to restart the phone before it works. I
have noticed lots of buffering too. There are androids in the house
without this problem. There are numerous problems with Ios *8.1 and I am
frankly becoming fed up with the whole thing. I can't move apps around
consistently, if at all. They are scattered everywhere and I can't put
them into folders for any organization. I get very few call
announcements. Many apps that used to work just fine are now broken.
When is Apple going to get their act together and fix these problems?
Are they dumping their commitment to accessibility with the new regime
or what? Too busy working on stupid gadgets like that idiotic watch
instead of fixing all the broken parts in Ios8. I for one will start
learning to use my brother's android if this keeps up. I really like
what Apple used to be but am becoming very disillusioned since they are
taking so long to respond to these issues. Iphone cost a serious amount
of money to have become so dysfunctional. And I know many of my sighted
friends and coworkers who do not like this new iOs 8, so there are many
more issues than an accessibility going on here. Let's hope they do
something about this very soon.

In summary, those of you who are having wifi issues are not imagining
it. It's for real! It's not your router or your iPhone, or your carrier,
it's the half-fast operating system.

RE: The answer is "Netatmo", was: App for telling inside temperatures

2014-11-05 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Crystal,

You might have to make it an early Christmas present. Anyhow, I would go to
www.netatmo.com and subscribe to their newsletter
because I think both last year and the year before they offered a 15% Black
Friday discount. I don’t know of course if they will do something like this
again, but it’s worth looking for it.

Hi Crystal,

Yes, I do have the rain gauge and it works perfectly. It’s all made from
moulded plastic and roughly I would say the size is like a large container of
yogurt (the ones that are 750 ml, not sure what that is in imperial
measurement). The comparision is not quite right because the bottom part is not
quite as much in diameter, then it narrows down and the top is basically a
large funnel about 5 inches across.

If you tap the “Rain” button in the app you get 3 values:

Rain last hour: this is given in millimeters per hour or, I guess if you have
it set to imperial measurements in inches per hour

Rain accumula.,: this stands for rain accumulation and is your total amount of
rainfall since Midnight as it measure midnight to midnight just as minimum and
maximum temperature

Rain forecast: this gives you an estimate as to how much rain is expected which
I guess is information pulled from official weather forecast services.

What currently is not possible is to see a history, e.g. if it’s been raining a
lot in the afternoon and evening and you really wanted to know how much rain
fell that day you would have to check just before midnight.

I am planning to talk to them about hopefully making at least the value for the
previous day available to Voiceover users, but apart from that it works great
and seems to be very accurate. The rain gauge uses what is called the “tipping
bucket” design. Inside under the funnel are 2 small holding containers/buckets
mounted on an arm balanced in the middle. They are so carefully balanced that
as one fills to the predetermined amount, I think it is 1 ml or maybe even
less, the weight tips it down and it empties. Then the other bucket which is up
fills and the process repeats. This is a common design for self-emptying
electronic rain gauges and you just have to make sure you place the rain gauge
on a level surface. It has a standard quarter inch tripod mount on the bottom
so it would be best to mount it or ask somebody to mount it for you and during
that process a level needs to be used to make sure it is perfectly level and
not tilted sideways as that would result in inaccurate readings.

Regards,

Sieghard

I have been wondering for a long time about a talking rain gauge.

Do you also use this unit, and is it also accessible?

I’ve been using an indoor/outdoor talking thermometer, but the outdoor monitor
keeps going out, but this weather station sounds exactly what I would like.

Hello Don and others,

As Andy and Christopher pointed out, in order to tell temperature you first
need a sensor which measures the temperature and then conveys this information
to an app on your phone. Otherwise it would be like looking for an app which
gives you your blood pressure without the actual blood pressure device.

Anyhow, there is good news and bad news. There is a fantastic thermometer
available, but it measures a lot more than temperature and it does so not only
for inside but also for outside. OK, so I guess the fact that it does more than
what you want isn't necessarily a bad thing. The bad thing in this case is the
fact that because of its capabilities this device might be a lot more expensive
then what you are looking for. So what is it I am talking about?

The company is called Netatmo and they are from France. They have released a
product specifically for iOS devices called the "Netatmo Weather Station". The
price is $179.00 and you can buy it directly for

and then selected the week he wanted he could arrow up and down to get the
week he wanted and then hit the done button. Now when he tries to select
the week he gets put into a menu that gives him speech rate options instead
of his week selections.

Is anyone else using this ap and having this issue? Suggestions?

Re: wi-fi cutting out on 6+

2014-11-05 Thread Mary Anne Lynskey

Hi Jessica,

As Cheryl pointed out, this random crashing issue seems to be happening
primarily if not only on the 6 Plus 128 Gb and then it appears to be only
happening for people who have huge numbers of apps installed. Everything I
heard and read points towards this happening if people have 700 or more apps
installed on the phone. Obviously some people do have that many although I
can't imagine why you would this many apps or for that matter need this
many. Maybe they are mostly games and in that case of course those people
really need to get a life *smile*. Anyhow, if I were in the market for a 128
Gb iPhone 6 Plus I definitely wouldn't worry about getting one based on how
few people are affected by that.

Quick Review of the JAM Rewind Bluetooth Speaker

2014-11-05 Thread SSEric
This is a little unit that is shaped like a cassette tape (some of you may
have to Google what those were). It is actually larger than a cassette and
is closer to the size of the tapes used in some camcorders (Google those,
too). (Not sure if this is a review or opportunity to date myself.) It comes
in a plastic case like the cassette cases. The price on line was $79; in
stores was $99. It comes in several colors.

Where you would have the spools on the front are speakers. The unit is about
5 inches side to side, so they are pretty close together. In those spots on
the back are vibrating speakers that I guess are supposed to provide the
base response. (I apologize for not knowing actual terminology for these
things.)

The speaker sits on the front edge, where the tape would be exposed. Side to
side it measures about 5 inches, up and down 2-1/2 inches and about 1n inch
thick (approximations).

There is audio feedback for things like pairing on/off, etc., but not
battery level, so far as I can tell. Buttons are volume up and down, skip
back and forth and play/pause/phone and power. They are tactile. There are
lights for Bluetooth connectivity and battery level. On the bottom is an
imbedded button, like you usually see for resetting devices. You use a
provided pin to change feedback languages, and sounds is an option, too. I
think the languages are English, French, Spanish, Portuguese.

The sound from this little thing is impressive, for what it is. As
mentioned, the speakers are quite close together, so there isn't much stereo
separation. There is a good deal of base response; certainly more than you
would expect. Volume is probably as good as you could expect for what it is,
but is less than I want for large rooms or outdoors. My point of reference
is to the Jawbone Jambox, which outperforms this in all respects.

The real downsides in my opinion are that it sits on an edge, so when you
reach to change tracks or volume it is easy to knock over. Because of the
vibrating speakers on the back you cannot lay it flat to project sound
outward. A kickstand to put it at an angle would really have been nice, as
that does improve volume. Battery level is not shown on the iPhone. Battery
life is supposed to be 8 hours, but you have no way of knowing where you
stand. It connects to only one device at a time. I have not tried it as a
speaker phone, but it has not worked for Seri. You do not get the tones to
start speaking and I've not gotten Seri to respond to anything I've said. I
have to say this is not a problem for me, as I have never used these
features on other Bluetooth devices, except the Seri nonresponse is a bother
at times. However, I mostly use this with my Touch, which is my media
device, so I don't have much need for Seri or phone.

I should have mentioned that, in addition to the plastic cassette case, you
are given a cloth drawstring bag. It comes with a short micro USB cord, but
no charger. You can connect using a 3.5 cord, but one of those was not
included.

This is a cute idea and could be a great option of those only wanting mono
sound, such as listening to books or radio. It certainly is compact and
portable and would be protected in the plastic case. $79 is more than it is
worth, in my opinion, and I would bet closer to the holidays it will be
heavily discounted.

Just my thoughts off the top of my head. If I forgot anything or anyone has
questions, feel free to be in touch.

Amazon App -- Can't Place Order, etc.

2014-11-05 Thread SSEric
Perhaps I saw this mentioned earlier, but I did not see any resolution.

Since the update, using an iPhone 5, latest IOS and Amazon updates I can no
longer one-click order, add to cart or add to wish list. I was actually able
to add something to my wish list the other day, but I don't know what I did
to get that to work. Otherwise, I have tried multiple taps, tap and hold,
going to the bottom of the screen and back up to the button I want and
probably a few other maneuvers.

Is there a fix for this?

All thanks in advance!

it set to imperial measurements in inches per hour

Sieghard

The
price is $179.00 and you can buy it directly for them or from Amazon. For this
you get the main indoor module which needs to be plugged into to power via a
Micro USB cable and it comes with an adapter for your wall outlet where the USB
cable plugs in. It also comes with 4 AA batteries which maintain the unit in
case of a power outage. You also get the outdoor module which take 4 AAA
batteries (included).
Both units are a perfect cylinder 2 Inches in diameter and are made of
aluminium. The indoor module if I remember correctly is about 6 inches long and
the outdoor module about 4 inches.
You can also get additional indoor modules if you want to monitor temperature
and so on in other rooms. Those are $79/each, you can add up to 3 of those and

Just touch the screen, and don't lift your finger. You'll hear two tones, then
VoiceOver will tell you you are in Explore Mode. As to the phone moving, if you
have it right between the two modes, as in around a 45-degree angle, then even
a small movement will cause it to switch. If you have it more definitely one
way or the other, it should be fine. Remember that this is relative to the
ground, so if you have it flat on your leg, but your leg is already at an angle
to the floor, then the phone will see that as being at the same angle.

RE: iPhone 4s screen unresponsive ?

2014-11-05 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Marissa,

If your issue is because of a known bug in the software then reinstalling iOS
probably won't fix this. But just as with a PC over time problems can come up
which may affect the performance of the device and a fresh install of the
operating system may help.
I don't think the size of your device should make that much difference and yes,
Apple does fix problems and new releases of iOS do result in better
performance. A good example was the release of iOS 7.1 which ran much faster
and better on older devices like the iPhone 4. A lot of people, especially
Voiceover users, also reported that iOS 8.1 already works much better on
devices like the 4S or the iPod Touch which prior to 8.1 experienced a lot of
Voiceover restarts.

Sieghard

Will do but here are 3 questions:

1. If it's q software issue and I restore using iTunes wont I just be
re-installing the software and the same issue will arise ?

2. Do these issues ever actually get fixed or is this apple's scheme of having
customers buy a new phone? Wouldn't these same "software issues" be present on
newer iPhones but just take some time before they show up?

3 does this issue have anything to with that my phone has 16GB and my 4 had 32?

RE: The answer is "Netatmo", was: App for telling inside temperatures

Rain accumula.,: this stands for rain accumulation and is your total amount of

Ibooks and Focus 40

2014-11-05 Thread denise avant
Hello everyone,

I have a PDF adobe text file I imported into Ibooks. I paired the
focus 40 with my Ipad. While the various buttons show up in Braille,
none of the text shows up though voiceover reads it just fine. Is
there any setting I need to adjust.
By the way, I tried reading the exact same file on a Windows computer
with Jaws under adobe, and the text shows up on the focus 40 just
fine. Actually, the file is reading better under windows.

I have the Plantronics Voyager Legend ear peace. I notice that when in
certain apps that when I remove the ear peace from my ear that the audio is

It's very handy when listening to an NLS Talking Book. I do love this ear

Hello,

Okay. It seems like there are more than myself that is having this problem.
At this point, I'm wondering if this is a software problem or a hardware
issue. My iphone6 is less than 2 weeks old. I have talked with others that
also agree that they have this issue with different various apps such as
after using Zello. I think I will put this on my list to contact
accessibility at Apple and see if I get a constructive response or the
general reply.

Thanks for verifying.

I use braille input all the time to enter my iTunes password, my passcode,
and passwords when logging into services inside apps (such as Dropbox).
You need to switch it to six dot braille (3-finger swipe right), at least
I've found that works best for me. Plus, at least when entering your
password for the app Store, you can just do a two-finger swipe right (the
enter gesture) to submit and you're done.

2014-11-05 Thread Alex Hall
Dan, there is a bug that renders braille input useless for typing in edit
fields in Safari, which might be part of the problem. However, entering an App
Store password, or text in non-webpage areas, works perfectly for me.

Jessica, having it switch modes is by design. Once you spend a bit of time in
Explore Mode and get to know the different layout, you might find it just as
easy to use. It's worth trying, as the alternative is not using braille input
natively at all. I still like MBraille, but I have to say that I never use it
now because using braille directly in any edit field is so much more efficient.

recording with the uverse easy remote

2014-11-05 Thread Patti Johnson
I have just learned how to do this and it is so neat. But I have a
couple questions. Am I correct in that you cannot set your dvr up to
record a future show? I know a sighted person can do it with the regular
remote, but you can't with the easy remote, is that right?
Also, once you pick a show to record, and it's recording, can you watch
something else while that show is recording? I am thinking you can but
just want to be sure I am right. Can you record more than one show at a
time with this app? At any rate it's so neat to be able to do this
totally on my own now.

Thanks,
Patti

RE: iPhone 4s screen unresponsive ?

2014-11-05 Thread Marissa Solaun
Will do but here are 3 questions:

1. If it's q software issue and I restore using iTunes wont I just be
re-installing the software and the same issue will arise ?

2. Do these issues ever actually get fixed or is this apple's scheme of having
customers buy a new phone? Wouldn't these same "software issues" be present on
newer iPhones but just take some time before they show up?

3 does this issue have anything to with that my phone has 16GB and my 4 had 32?

2014-11-05 Thread Crystal French
Sieghard,
I have been wondering for a long time about a talking rain gauge.

Do you also use this unit, and is it also accessible?

I’ve been using an indoor/outdoor talking thermometer, but the outdoor monitor
keeps going out, but this weather station sounds exactly what I would like.

Thanks,

Subject: The answer is "Netatmo", was: App for telling inside temperatures

The
price is $179.00 and you can buy it directly for them or from Amazon. For this
you get the main indoor module which needs to be plugged into to power via a
Micro USB cable and it comes with an adapter for your wall outlet where the USB
cable plugs in.
Those are $79/each, you can add up to 3 of those and
they are identical in look to the outdoor module.
The indoor module needs to be connected to your home WiFi and you can then
download the free Netatmo app which was pretty much completely inaccessible
when this product was released 2 years ago. I had bought it at the time and
then contacted the company which was very receptive to making it accessible. I
was put in touch with their head of the development team in Paris and we had
several Skype conversations. He then made several beta versions after informing
himself of what he needed to do in order to make this mostly accessible. I
tested these and provided feedback and the result is now a very accessible app
which gives you access to all the main readings. I say "mostly accessible"
because the app displays various graphs of weather data when you turn the phone
in landscape mode and these are not accessible due to their graphical nature.
The wizard to set up the station also used to be not accessible, but you can
now set up a station completely by yourself using the app.

The indoor module measures the following:
Current temperature
Minimum and maximum temperature for the day (midnight to midnight)
CO2 level in "PPM" (parts per million) including letting you know when it's low
or high in which case you should ventilated your room
Humidity
Noise level in decibels

The outdoor module measures the following:
Current temperature
Minimum and maximum temperature for the day (midnight to midnight)
Outdoor "Feels Like" temperature
Humidity
Air quality if available in your area since this information is taken from the
internet and official government weather stations

You also get air pressure (barometric pressure) which I am putting separately
as air pressure is not indoor or outdoor specific, it's the same whether you
are inside or outside.

The additional indoor modules measure the same as the main indoor module with
the exception of noise level. The developer told me that since additional
indoor modules run on battery power, measuring noise level would result in an
unacceptable amount of battery life because the module would have to be
constantly listening which apparently uses up a lot of power.

If you search the archive for "Netatmo" you will find several threads from the
past 2 years. There are quite a few people who have bought the Netatmo Weather
Station and I think most are quite satisfied. I think it's awesome and it works
great. Netatmo is also working on releasing additional sensors. Earlier this
year a rain gauge was released which also costs $79. It will measure rainfall
amount and there is a "Rain" button which you tap on to check those readings. I
guess they decided to put them on an extra screen so that the main screen
doesn't become too cluttered.
I believe Netatmo is wo

RE: restoring iPhone to the same IOs

2014-11-05 Thread Neal Ewers
All of this reminds me of the early days of computers before Windows when each
software developer had their own interface for their applications. You really
had to get your head around how the developer had designed the application
before it became second nature to you. With Windows And Mac Os development, all
of a sudden, all things mostly looked the same, or at least they had the same
flavor such that you didn't have to have a different mind set for each
application. In this way, iTunes is different. Yes, some of the basic Windows
and Mac navigation is there, but there is a lot of stuff on top of this that
one has to either fight or figure out what the programmer must have been
thinking when iTunes was developed.

I don't use iTunes a lot, so I didn't really get a good feel for it up to this
point. I don't use it any more now, but, somehow, version 12 seems easier for
me to get my head around. Of course, this may be where my head is to start
with. This is to say that not everyone may feel this way, but this has caused
me to go back and appreciate where those of us who have been around for a long
time have come from with regard to software.

Well, you're certainly right, in my opinion, about Windows Media Player. I
don't even use it. I have updated to iTunes 12 and I actually like it better
than previous versions. It is a different interface, and I suspect there are
some accessibility issues, at least I have heard of some, but I think what
trips up a number of people is that it is not the way they expect it to be from
using previous versions. The shortcut keys can get you around rather easily and
the help file contains a very extensive list of additional shortcut keys.

through Winamp. Windows Media Playre also has a pretty unique interface that
takes some getting used to. If you have to jump through hoops to learn a media
player anyway, it might as well be iTunes if you're going to use it with your
Apple devices. I'm not trying to talk anyone into using iTunes, and I don't
really care what multimedia player people use, but if you want an application
to manage your media library, and you own an Apple device, you might as well
give iTunes a try and see how it stacks up against Winamp, WMP or whatever
accessible multimedia player you can find.

The answer is "Netatmo", was: App for telling inside temperatures

2014-11-05 Thread Sieghard Weitzel

The
price is $179.00 and you can buy it directly for them or from Amazon. For this
you get the main indoor module which needs to be plugged into to power via a
Micro USB cable and it comes with an adapter for your wall outlet where the USB
cable plugs in.
Those are $79/each, you can add up to 3 of those and
they are identical in look to the outdoor module.

I believe Netatmo is working on an anemometer (wind sensor) which will most
likely be the next sensor to be released.

Best regards,
Sieghard

My device will not stay still long enough for me to even try to use this
feature. It would be extremely helpful if I could lock the position of the
buttons. Once I am able to do this, I may be able to give them using it another
try.
If there are any ideas on how to get around this until then, I would greatly
appreciate it.

Well, I am using 6 dot braille. However, when trying to enter a password for
my bank via Safari or my password in the app store and any other protected
field it speaks nothing as I am typing and when I exit the braille keyboard and
press the appropriate button I get a password error from the service I am using.

I have also checked the field and there appears to be nothing in it before
clicking the OK or submit or whatever button.

I think I am going to report this to accessibility and see what they have to
say about it.

The following comes from the Focus 40 Blue User Guide:
Locking the Perkins-style Keyboard
When using your Focus Blue in front of your computer’s QWERTY
keyboard, you can lock the Perkins-style keys on the top of the
display to prevent accidentally pressing them and entering unwanted
text or commands.
To lock the Focus Blue keyboard, press the Power button to display the
status information and then simultaneously press a Cursor Router and
the left Mode button. To indicate that the keyboard is locked, DOTS
2-3-4-6-7-8 and DOTS 1-3-5-6-7-8 will be displayed in two cells toward
the right end of the display, just before the connection status. Press
any other control to return to normal operation. Once locked, pressing
DOTS 1 through 8 or the SPACEBAR will no longer send keystrokes
through to the computer.
To unlock the keyboard so you can once again enter text or perform
commands from the Focus Blue, press the Power button to display the
status information and then simultaneously press a Cursor Router and
the right Mode button. Press any other control to return to normal
operation and you can once again enter text using the Focus Blue
keyboard.

Subject: two ios 8.1 bugs?

Hi guys:
When I make a phone call on my 5S, and have to press a number to access a
menu, none of the numbers on the keyboard will speak with VO.
Second issue is the iTunes password keyboard letters will not speak when I
try and make a purchase from the phone. Can you duplicate these issues? They
worked fine in v 7.02.

Re: braille keyboard in password/protected fields?

2014-11-05 Thread Alex Hall
I use braille input all the time to enter my iTunes password, my passcode, and
passwords when logging into services inside apps (such as Dropbox). You need to
switch it to six dot braille (3-finger swipe right), at least I've found that
works best for me. Plus, at least when entering your password for the app
Store, you can just do a two-finger swipe right (the enter gesture) to submit
and you're done.

Does the iPhone have an internal thermometer? That’s the only way that
something like this would work.

Does anyone know of any apps for the IPhone and IOS8.1 that would tell you
the inside or indoor temperature?

Didn’t know if anyone had made one or not as have searched the apps store
and hadn’t found anything.

So figured would check.

Thanks.

Overcast Synking between IOS and the web player

2014-11-05 Thread Daniel McGee
Hello all, I was just wondering for those who are using Overcast as your
podcast app of choice, if you use or have tried going between the web player
and your IOS device are any of you finding that your podcast subscriptions
don't synk correctly between IOS and the web player? In my case, It seems to
sink alright when starting a podcast from the beginning with the web player and
then picks up from where you left off on the iphone. However, after this, if
you carry on listening from the phone and then go back to the web player, the
web player will start the podcast from the beginning again and after that, the
sinking between IOS and web doesn't work. By the way, I do have an Overcast
account.

Any ideas on why this may be happening?

Thanks all

Daniel

Re: Audible and deleting books

Hi Shirley,

When you have the focus on the title of the book, do a three finger flick left.
Voiceover will say page 2. Do a one finger flick left to the delete button and
do a one finger double-tap. You will then get the regular deletion screen.

Re: Urgent help with Focus 40 Blue keyboard

2014-11-05 Thread Arianna Sepulveda
Press any other control to return to normal
operation and you can once again enter text using the Focus Blue
keyboard.

Ari

Re: new in latest BBC iPlayer update

2014-11-05 Thread Neil Barnfather - TalkNav
The only issue with the AD function that I have found is that the AD works fine
when you select the newest available episode to watch from the Audio Described
category, however, if you select any of the older episodes which are available,
still from the AD category, these are not Audio Described…

Someone has dropped a clanger there.

Re: App for telling inside temperatures

2014-11-05 Thread Christopher Chaltain
The iPhone doesn't have a thermometer built into it. You may be able to
achieve something similar by using a thermometer that broadcasts the
temperature over the network or bluetooth. I think there are such
cooking thermometers, so maybe there's also something for room
temperatures. Another option is using a thermostat tied into your home's
wireless network and an accessible iPhone app. I know there are several
options here.

Does anyone know of any apps for the IPhone and IOS8.1 that would tell
you the inside or indoor temperature?

Didn’t know if anyone had made one or not as have searched the apps
store and hadn’t found anything.

So figured would check.

Thanks.

Does anyone know of any apps for the IPhone and IOS8.1 that would tell you

Didn't know if anyone had made one or not as have searched the apps store

So figured would check.

Thanks.

I'm not a big iTunes fan, but other than maybe FooBar, every media library
application I've used as been a pretty unique experience. Winamp may have a lot
of hot keys, but they aren't standard and try working with remote content
through Winamp.

Re: Potential Recall: Technical Defects of iPhone 6+ Raise Questions about Controller I.C.

2014-11-05 Thread Ben Mustill-Rose
Hi,

For anyone who's wondering, the potential problems with the 6+ are in
no way what so ever related to the problems with the Samsung drives
that the author noted in the article. The Samsung drives suffered from
a firmware (E.G. purely software) issue where the firmware failed to
take into account different voltage requirements for old data, which
resulted in slow read speeds. If (and it's a very big if for me) by
mear coincidence the 6+ has the same *software* problem, Apple would
be able to fix it remotely in the form of an iOS update in the same
way that baseband firmware is sometimes updated without recalling
products.

I also doubt any industry *experts* are questioning the reliability of
TLC NAND as a whole. The technology has been around for a long time
now & its limitations have always been known by people who really
understand it. In simple terms you aren't able to write as much data
to TLC NAND as you are SLC & MLC. Additionally, performance of TLC on
its own will be lower than that of SLC (the fastest) and MLC (a middle
ground), but companies employ many different techniques to counteract
this limitation. For example, the Samsung EVO drives have a certain
amount of SLC cache which is used to hold data when the drive is being
written to for a sustained amount of time. When things carm down or
when the cache is filled, data is transparently moved from the SLC to
the TLC.

A bit of a rant I know, but as someone who sells hard drives I felt
that I had to.

Cheers,
Ben.

the techy discussion of memory types, not heard arguments like that since

Huge Potential Recall
Technical Defects of iPhone 6+ Raise Questions about Controller IC

November 2014
Functional defects in some of Apple's latest smartphones have been observed.

According to overseas IT news sites on Nov. 2, problems have been reported
related to data storage in the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6+.

Business Insider reported on Oct. 24 that a number of 128GB iPhone 6+ users
have reported functional defects via Twitter. When owners switch between
apps or check notifications, the phone is said to inexplicably crash or
enter a reboot loop.

Apple Insider also reported on Oct. 23 that some owners have replaced their
iPhone 6+ four times. It was also pointed out that Apple's recent iOS 8.1
update did not fix these defects.

Some in the industry point out that considering that technical defects
mainly occur in the 128GB version of the iPhone 6 Plus, there might be a
problem in the controller IC of triple-level cell (TLC) NAND flash.

TLC flash is a type of solid-state NAND flash memory that stores three bits
of data per flash media cell. It can store two to three times as much data
as a single-level cell (SLC) that stores one bit of data and a multi-level
cell (MLC) solid-state flash memory that stores two bits of data. Moreover,
TLC flash is more affordable. However, TLC is slower than SLC or MLC in
reading and writing data.

To reduce cost, Apple reportedly used TLC NAND flash in the 128GB version of
the iPhone 6+ and some other models. Previously, TLC NAND was used in some
iPads, whereas more expensive but more stable MLC NAND was used in most of
the iPhone series.

As numerous reports of low read performance of the Samsung SSD 840 and 840
EVO using TLC NAND flash have surfaced on the Internet, a problem in the
controller IC is considered to be the more likely cause of the defects. As
the controversy over the SSD 840 and 840 EVO grew, Samsung embarked on
firmware upgrades. Some in the industry think that if TLC flash is indeed
the cause of the defects, Apple might recall all of the products that have
been sold so far.

Re: 5, 5C, or 5S, and which Carrier?

2014-11-05 Thread RobH.
5S is bound to be recommended fcor the faster processor at least, a key
thing for KNFB reader to be efficient. Don't know about camera, though
suspect 5S would be higher, and thus, better, too.

I've just got one this week and still moving into it.

For an aside, I bought the Otterbox Defender case ahead of getting the 5S
and took against it for some reason right away. Found and just paid for the
Griffin Survivor for it, which I like a great deal better. Chunky and
lumpy, but heck, it works well anyway. I just love the way they did a
scoop out around the Home button so you can do the thumb print thing despite
button being recessed. JMO, RobH.

Subject: 5, 5C, or 5S, and which Carrier?

Hi all,
I previously had the iPhone 4S, but I don't have it any longer. I am in the
market for a new iPhone and carrier. I am looking at either the 5, 5C, or
5S. I would consider the 6, but it is too pricy for me at this point. The
main thing I would like to know is if the KNFB reader app will work with the
Iphone 5 or 5c? Would it be better for me to get the 5S for this purpose, or
would a 5 or 5c work well for it? I was thinking that the 5 or 5c would be
cheaper, but I want to make sure that the KNFB reader would still work well
with those iPhone models. I heard that it is better to have a 5S or 6 and
that it only works well for these models, but I am not sure if this is true.
Thank you,
Misty

My guess is that you are much lighter users of the devices, than those
bringing out the problem.
We can all live with potential weaknesses, while we don't over-stress them.

Hi again,

Maybe Tim Cook's announcement that he is gay means Apple is entering a new
era of honesty and admitting mistakes and they'll be transparent regarding
the iPhone 6 Plus 128 Gb crashing issue *smile*.
Below is a link to an article about a monument for Steve Jobbs in St.
