Subject: U E boom questions

I would appreciate hearing from persons who have played with this blue
tooth speaker extensively.

Assuming your equalization is flat, how well do high frequency sounds
come through on this speaker? I ask because I don't hear highs as well
as I used to. Also, some persons only seem to care about low and
intermediate frequencies.

Does the U E boom pair easily?

And the last question for the day, what is the most discounted price you
have found on this speaker?

Thanks.

Good morning, this app is truly and wonderfully jampacked with recipes. The
only thing I need to figure out though, is how to keep from getting kicked out.
For instance, I'll be looking at tuna salad recipes, and I'll get to all let's
say the 50th one and then the Apple decide to kick me out. How do I fix that?

Issue with Multilingualism in IOS 8

2014-12-02 Thread Edgar Lozano
Hi Everyone,

Not sure how many multilingual people exist on the list, but as I was
using the iPhone to read a book in Korean, I had a curiosity. I'm
hoping that someone has an explanation for this minor inconvenience. I
use a total of 8 languages on a daily basis to write, read, and browse
the web with VoiceOver. VoiceOver has great support for these
languages! However, when I upgraded to IOS 8, the ability for
instantaneous transition to higher quality variants of the voices that
correspond to the languages is nearly nonexistent. I am aware of the
simple fact that in order for any form of language switching to occur,
one has to have the Default Voice selected. As an example of this very
small issue, the other day, I received a document that had some parts
in Mandarin, and others in Japanese. As I was reading, I noticed that
VoiceOver switched to the compact version of the Mandarin Chinese
voice, even after downloading its corresponding high quality version.
Interestingly, however, after making the decision to make an explicit
change in the VoiceOver settings to the language in question, an
immediate difference was noted. That is, the higher quality voice
spoke, rather than its compact variant. I'm becoming a bit too
detailed in my simplistic inquiry, but as this wasn't an issue in IOS
7, I thought to ask to see if anyone had an explanation or a fix for
this minor inconvenience. I would appreciate any replies to this
topic.

Thank you.

Yes, they do not offer 1 year of deezer, what they are offering right now in

For deezer they only offer 30 day free trial then believe it is $9.00 mo.

will wait for now. I love the sound but lack of dts is a bit bothering and as
of right now from what my searches turned up it is not on the list of features
to be added. Sonos says there is not a lot of dts out there, but that is so far
not my experience at least with the movies I have checked out.

My tv has a selection for the optical output of dolby digital and 16 byt I put
it on dolby digital, but sonos still says sterio even though what I am
listening to has good effects in the back, but I’ve noticed no right and left

Any suggestions?

Subject: Deezer offers lossless music streaming for Sonos users

Hello all Sonos and music enthusiasts,

Below is a link to an article which describes how Deezer, a music service which
has pretty much all the same features and an even larger collection of music
than Spotify is now offering hi-fi streaming for Sonos users. The stream will
of course require a pretty fast internet connection as it is in FLAC format
(free lossless audio codec) and comes in at 1,411 kbps or better. This is
compared to 320 kbps which is what Spotify Premium subscribers get.

The only other music service which offers this quality and which is fairly new
and not yet available in Canada is Tidal. The Deezer Elite subscription is
$19.95 a month which is the same what Tidal charges. But anybody who purchases
a Sonos Play 1, Play 3, Playbar or I believe Play 5 as well will get a one-year
free Deezer subscription. That means if you are paying for Spotify, you can
save yourself $120 a year which goes a goodly way towards the purchase of a
Play 1 or Play 3. Anyhow, below is the link to the article and you can of
course look in the archives for my posts about Sonos and go to www.sonos.com
for more information. If you Google “Sonos Reviews” you will also find a lot of
links for reviews of the Sonos system from independent websites like Gizmoto,
CNET and so on.

http://blog.deezer.com/press/deezer-and-sonos-bring-music-lovers-the-first-global-high-resolution-streaming-experience/

I was, by the way, told that Sonos is currently working with Tidal to offer
their service via Sonos as well. This would of course be expected since Sonos
offers access to a huge list of music services via the Sonos system.

I should also mention that accessing Deezer via Sonos is a much better
experience than Spotify because the Spotify app on Sonos is very limited
whereas Deezer gives you pretty much full access to what Deezer has to offer. I
was excited that Spotify is finally available in Canada as of a couple of
months ago and signed up for a Premium subscription, but since I recently
purchased a couple of Play 1 speakers along with a Sonos Playbar and Sub and
now activate the one-year free Deezer subscription, I am going to cancel my
Sonos Premium subscription today. I find that with these new lossless streaming
options, the amount of music available on demand whenever you want it and the
ability to sync music to your device for off-line use there really is less and
less reason to actually go and buy the music. For $240 a year I can have all
the music I want now in lossless hi-fi format whereas if I purchase an album
via iTunes all I get is 256 kbps. Even with a Premium subscription streaming at
320 Kbps what I get is better than what I can buy from iTunes.

If you are streaming via a computer that is connected to a set of powered
speakers or an iPhone connected to a bluetooth speaker the higher price for
Deezer Elite is of

RE: VO Stops When The Phone Locks

2014-12-02 Thread Richard Turner
OK, so this isn't about VO stopping, but Downcast stopping, right? If that is
true, first, that is the problem with not starting a new thread with a clear
subject line, but, since I didn't follow all these messages because I thought
it was about VO stopping, do you use Airplay?
I have the same problem with VoiceDream Reader after using Airplay. Or, is
this another side effect of the audio ducking setting?

With VoiceDream stoping when the phone locks, the only way I've found to work
around that is to either never use Airplay or power the phone off and back on
again.

There's Simple (no really, its' just called Simple). It's an online-only
bank, offering very few fees, good ATM coverage, an app they are working to
make fully accessible but that people say already works well with VoiceOver,
and other features. There are others, but that's the only one I have dealt
with. currently, I'm waiting for my invitation - you can't just sign up, you
must request an invitation and wait until a slot opens up. They also can
only do personal accounts, no small business yet.

Regarding online banking: what you are talking about is offerred by many of
the banks people have mentioned. I have not heard of a bank which only
operates online, though I wouldn't be surprised if one existed. I don't know
if the online bank would exist very well in our society since most people
like the option of going to a physical location and talking to someone if an
issue or concern comes up. Or, if they simply want to deal with a real
person. Most of the major banks and credit unions have online banking
services, such as Chase, Wells-Fargo, Bank of America, and many others. I
use Chase and I have had no issues with their app. I can even transfer money
between accounts in the Chase app. I used to call the toll free number for
Chase once or twice a day to hear my balance and other information.
Now, I open the app. Chase offers a service where you can sign-up for
different email alerts, such as low balance alerts, when checks or
transactions clear your account, and many other kinds. This is another way
that I stay on top of my accounts.

Online banking is like Facebook: you can do as much or as little as you
want. Some banks, like Chase, offer online demonstrations so you can see the
kinds of information you would find in an account summary.
Go to your bank's site and see if you can find something like this.

Good luck,
Wayne

Hi,
The US Bank app is quite accessible. I only use it for checking our

The Bank of America app is completely accessible. You can take a
picture of a check and deposit it, but if you have no vision, you

whether it is upside down or not.
I've not heard much about Wells Fargo's app, but since you have an

Sometimes I guess it can happen with books, where they just take a picture of

apps Stop Working When iPhone 6 Locks

2014-12-02 Thread Eileen Misrahi
Hi Richard,

You're correct. I put the wrong subject line when posting. So, I'll reframe
this. So far, there have been 2 apps that will stop when my iPhone 6 locks.
'the are Downcast and Zello. It's the sound and not VO. Once I press the power
button to unlock, either Downcast or Zello will resume. I haven't opened
Downcast this morning and tested it with all my apps closed in the app switcher
closed, so I can't say if it is a memory issue or not at this time. My thoughts
are that if this is the case, then I'll definitely make a report to Apple since
there are other problems with the processor chips in crashing the phone as one
places more apps, videos, music and etc. on a 6 or 6 plus phone with 128 GB.

Thanks for pointing it out that my subject line wasn't exactly related to the
issue at hand.

Cheers,
Eileen

Re: U E boom questions

2014-12-02 Thread Traci Duncan
Hello, I can answer a couple of these.

Yes, it is easy to pair. When you first get the speaker, it is in pairing
mode. The speaker will suggest you download the app, but for straight up
listening, the app isn’t needed.

The lowest price I have seen on Amazon is $179. I’ve seen lower, but you’d pay
for shipping. I believe Altimate Ears website sells refurbished models for
$145.

I’m wondering if Santa will bring a second UE Boom to our house, so we can have
an stereo pair. ;)

Assuming your equalization is flat, how well do high frequency sounds
come through on this speaker? I ask because I don't hear highs as well

Does the U E boom pair easily?

And the last question for the day, what is the most discounted price you

Re: How do I access Audiopass in the NFL Mobile app on my iPhone?

2014-12-02 Thread Wayne Merritt
Cheryl,
Thanks ever so much for your steps for listening to live games. I used
it this past weekend to hear a couple of games and it worked
everytime.

Wayne

On 12/2/14, Cheryl Ann Homiak cah4...@icloud.com wrote:
It does let you access archived games but the instructions are different
 for that.

As for live games, I listened just this evening on my iPad so I know the
instructions are still the same. The best thing is to make sure you close
it from your app switcher if it is still open. Then open the app again and
double-tap on the number next to the menu icon. Then, if you are logged in
to audiopass, that option will be there but it may be clear at the far end
of the screen. Also remember that the screen will have gone into landscape
 mode.

For archived games, you go to teams. This is a little tricky just because
you have to touch down further on the iPad or iPhone to find the row of
menu choices such as home, videos, and team is one of them; settings and
some other things are on that row too. If you don't find it, try
p\double-tapping the menu item again and then trying to find it. Under
teams, right after the menu icon there will be an unlabelled button you
should double tap. Then you flick through the teams and select the one
whose game you want. Then find schedule on the page and double-tap it.
Double-tap on the date of the game you want and you should be in a page
that looks a lot like the one that has the games in the live screen. You
double-tap watch/listen and choose how you want to listen.

Of course do go into Settings and make sure it shows you as signed in to
 NFL audiopass.

I know it's kind of confusing for a number of reasons: some unlabelled
buttons, the fact that what you want can be on the screen you are in but
in flicking you can get trapped repeating a few items and have trouble
going all the way through the choices.

Chase also has talking ATMs at evry location. the talking ATM's can
read a deposit amount on a check, even if it is handwritten. No
envelope is needed and no deposit slip is required to deposit a check
at a Chase ATM. It is now not necessary to keep track of the amount
of the check because the talking ATM scans the check and can identify
the amount. I believe the iPhone app has a limit of $2,500 in
deposits on any single day and about $5,000 in any 30 day period.
Talking ATM's have no deposit limits.

If you are using the provided earphones (so that others nearby are not
distracted by VO on the phone) will a portable Bluetooth speaker be able to
pick up the signal from your phone and amplify for the room? Hope this is
not a really dumb question- but Best Buy could not answer.

Re: I wanted to share the food.com app this is a free app.

2014-12-02 Thread Donna
Here's another recipe app that I like. The recipes in this app are from the
chefs from the Food Network.

The app has video and written ingredient/cooking instructions. The app is
accessible with voiceover. There are a couple flaws in the app when a recipe is
being read with VO. The Notes button is spoken as Dimmed, which makes it seem
as though the Notes feature isn't available, which the Notes feature can be
used. To access the recipes video, there isn't a labeled button. If you touch
the top of the page, swipe from left to right, VO will read the name of the
recipe swipe just below the recipe name it seems that VO is skipping reading
something, if you tap here the video of the preparation for the recipe will
start playing. Some of the videos have ads that play before the recipe video
begins. All of this will make more sense and will be clear to you when you get
the app.

The app is Free. There over 45,000 recipes to search and share.

I had no idea the Roku had become the least bit accessible. I once had a
Roku and moved to the Apple TV to take advantage of voice Over because I
could no longer see to find my way around the apps on the Roku interface on
the television. As far as the phone app goes, I had no trouble using the app
for putting apps on the Roku and taking apps off of the Roku. I had no
difficulty changing settings on the Roku. However, unless they changed
things since I went to the Apple TV a year ago I could not use the part of
the remote control on the app that let me go left and right and up and down
and select with the Roku remote app. That part never worked with Voice Over
turned on unless they fixed it in the last year which is highly possible.
Good luck with that and I would be highly interested in your results.

Merv

The app has video and written ingredient/cooking instructions. The app is

is being read with VO. The Notes button is spoken as Dimmed, which makes it
seem as though the Notes feature isn't available, which the Notes feature
can be used. To access the recipes video, there isn't a labeled button. If
you touch the top of the page, swipe from left to right, VO will read the
name of the recipe swipe just below the recipe name it seems that VO is
skipping reading something, if you tap here the video of the preparation for
the recipe will start playing. Some of the videos have ads that play before
the recipe video begins. All of this will make more sense and will be clear
to you when you get the app.

The app is Free. There over 45,000 recipes to search and share.

Re: Issue with Multilingualism in IOS 8

2014-12-02 Thread Andrew Lamanche
Hi Edgar,

There are quite a few people who use multiple languages on their iphones and on
the mac so I’m hoping somebody else might be more helpful than I. I do switch
languages in the roter regularly but I must admit that I have not had to read a
text within which there would be more than language. The only thing that I
have noticed is that when I am in Mail application, and I go through the list
of my messages, the ones that have subject in a different language than my
default are read by Voiceover rather curiously: i.e. mixture of default
language trying to spell the words and the correct language reading parts of
the words or letters. The automatic language switching does not work for me in
this context. So I guess you are experiencing something similar.

Best wishes and good luck

Andrew

I would appreciate any replies to this
 topic.

 Thank you.

Waltr was Re: Directions for adding music from ITunes 12 to IPhone

2014-12-02 Thread Christopher Hallsworth

Hi all,
Please check out a fairly new paid project called Waltr from
www.softarena.com
basically it takes the hassle out of iTunes altogether. Connect your
device before starting the app, open the music or video you wish to
upload, and it will magically not only be added to your device but also
make it available for native playback. Unfortunately Waltr is a Mac app
and can only be downloaded and bought directly from the above website. I
am in contact with one of the developers, Josh, so I will see if he will
consider porting it to other platforms. So that's Waltr, w a l t r, from

www.softarena.com
I hope you find this useful.

RE: Roku accessibility?

2014-12-02 Thread Merv Keck
Hi,

I did not find speech on the Roku which is why I trashed it. There was
limited speech on the iPhone app but not for navigation just for adding and
deleting channels or apps depending on what Roku chooses to call it. And
settings such as changing its name on your network etc. However, navigation
through the remote was not useful with the iPhone app using voice Over
unless something has change and their customer support was pretty useless.

RE: Roku accessibility?

2014-12-02 Thread Merv Keck
Hi,

Yes I loved all those freaky little private channels that the Roku offers
that no one else seems to know about including the Apple TV. I no longer
have the link or I would share it. There are channels available for the Roku
that you can add that are not advertised that give you the strangest
content. And once you add them they show up on your iPhone app. The problem,
however, is that you cannot use the remote control part of the iPhone app
with voice over unless accessibility has improved.

Hi all,
Please check out a fairly new paid project called Waltr from
www.softarena.com
basically it takes the hassle out of iTunes altogether.

Disappearing ringtones...

2014-12-02 Thread Christopher Hallsworth

Hi all,
I have contacted Apple regarding my ringtones disappearing. While they
have not told me personally, I read that they are investigating the
issue. That's all. So for now back up any ringtones you've purchased or
make your own.

I have always had this bug. I bought two tones, and lost them at the phone

Hi,
I heard on a podcast that Apple is aware of the problem and is working
on it.

I was unable to find them anywhere...and the same thing happened...at

settings, sounds, ring tones, it shows that her default ring tone is the
default IOS ring tone. But when she clicks on that, VoiceOver says that
the Christmas ring tone is selected...and it still does play when her
phone rings. But we are afraid that if we change her ring tone, it will
disappear once more. When I go into my purchases in the iTunes store, it
shows everything except tones! Why are they so elusive...and how can I
keep tones from running away from me? Inquiring minds want to know! If
anyone has any experiences, thoughts, suggestions, etc., etc., etc., I

Please dont throw stones at me, because this is just my personal opinion.
I feel like buying ringtones is like buying air to breath when you can

I bought only one ringtone in my life, it was back in the 90's for a

I never did it again.

Hi,
Its nice to have choices of apps to choose.
I use iTools on the Mac and its free.
I have not added a video that needed converting, however, i have added a 30
second mp3 ringtone and it was converted to the correct m4r format.

 Hi all,
Please check out a fairly new paid project called Waltr from
 www.softarena.com
basically it takes the hassle out of iTunes altogether.

Now that would be a major leap forward. I'd put my Mac back on for that.

Hi,

Yes I loved all those freaky little private channels that the Roku offers that
no one else seems to know about including the Apple TV. I no longer have the
link or I would share it. There are channels available for the Roku that you
can add that are not advertised that give you the strangest content. And once
you add them they show up on your iPhone app. The problem, however, is that you
cannot use the remote control part of the iPhone app with voice over unless
accessibility has improved.

upgraded to iPhone6 with a special VZW Plan

2014-12-02 Thread Sarah Clark
Hi everyone,
I finally took the plunge and upgraded to the iPhone 6 from my 4s running 7.1.2.
I had read the bug fixes for 8.1.1, and looked back at the fixes for 8.1.0, but
it wasn't until I went back and compared those to the list of reported bugs in
8.0 that I realized that all of the bugs that I would be concerned with are
gone. -- I don't use braille, bluetooth keyboard, and only rarely Safari. So I
went out and bought the phone the same day, a silver 64 GB iPhone 6.

Just an FYI... I am with Verizon, and signed up with their save plan, which is
a secret plan that they don't tell you about -- you have to ask for it. But
it is unlimited voice/texts and 2 GB of data for $60, or $50 if you only need 1
GB. I don't use much data, so I just got 1 GB, figuring that paying the $15
overage fee for the occasional month that I might go over, would be cheaper
than paying an extra $10 each month.
Its an individual plan, and it doesn't allow data sharing or hotspots, but if
you don't need those, it is a very good deal compared to their regular plans. I
knocked $30 off my bill with it.

A few questions about my new iPhone 6

2014-12-02 Thread Sarah Clark
Here are my questions...

Voices: I downloaded both the VO enhanced voice and the Alex voice, and then I
swiped down and tapped activate, but neither one is starting. Is there
something else I need to do?

Handwriting: I know this isn't a new feature, but I never used it in iOS 7 so
its new to me.
I added it to the rotor, but it says lower case when I start it...Is there a
way to be able to write with caps too?
Is there a way to delete a character (other than leaving handwriting mode and
hitting the delete key on the keyboard)?
Is there a way to write numbers, punctuation or math symbols like + and -?

Also, a question about folders... rather basic I know, but I haven't really
created any since I got my first iPhone 3 years ago so I don't remember.
In moving some apps around on the home screen, I have inadvertently created
some folders I didn't intend to create, and I would like to undo their
creation. How do you delete a folder? I don't want to delete the apps inside
the folder, just eliminate the folder itself so that the apps are not inside
one.

Thanks,
Sarah

Brailliant BI and iOS 8.1.1

2014-12-02 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
Hello all. Wondering if anyone has issues with the Humanware Brailliant BI
Braille display locking up when using it with an iPhone on iOS 8.1.1. I have
a display and after a while of moving around and editing the display
freezes. The phone continues to speak without issues, but I have to turn off
the display, lock the phone, and then turn on the display again and start
over in order for things to work right again. I don't have a way to compare
if this was the issue with iOS 7.x or if it might be an on-going issue with
the Brailliant display. Ideas and/or suggestions welcome.

I've already removed and paired the display again and I have no connection
issues. Just the freezing issues, and yet there seems to be no pattern in
when it happens.

Thanks.

Hi, while I also find iTunes to be a spawn of the devil, it's not bad to use,
and quite honestly will provide you the necessary means to get copies of your
purchased music and ring tones so you have copies on your local computer. This
way you won't lose access to that precious purchased media.

Are there Windows tools to do this? I'm not real fond of iTunes for Windows.
I think buying a couple of ring tones was a big waste because when I restarted

Don’t know about the hand writing thing. But as for the folders, just move the
apps outside of the folder, and the folder will go away. As for the voices,
this especially true with alex, you have to toggle voice over off, then back
on. This should fix that issue.

Subject: A few questions about my new iPhone 6

I don't want to delete the apps inside
the folder, just eliminate the folder itself so that the apps are not inside
one.

Thanks,

Sarah

I've already removed and paired the display again and I have no connection

I don't recall all the gestures in Handwriting, but I know AppleVis.com
http://applevis.com/ has a guide on the feature. I seem to recall that a
two-finger swipe left is delete, right is new line, and three gingers
left/right move between input types (upper/lower case/numbers). I could easily
be wrong, though.

Subject: upgraded to iPhone6 with a special VZW Plan

Hi all,

I got a Roku Streaming Stick last Friday while it was on sale, and it should be
here soon. Anyone know if the companion iOS app is accessible? If so, are there
any problems or areas where it needs work that I should know about? Any other
tips for a new Roku user? Thanks!

mBraille or what?

2014-12-02 Thread RobH.
Just got to try this, wrote text in the normal input screen, then exited,
went to messages, open a text field, cranked round the rotor to find
edit,... no edit, got braille input like you do on the rotor, but no edit
so I couldn't do all the cut/copy... paste; I do like to paste.

This is iPhone 5S, with iOs 8.1.1.

Edit functions on an open text field is a bit fundamental and guess I'm
going to be pointed at a different list.

Hi all,
I agree. iTunes is brilliant on the mac. But it's always nice to have
options. In fact I like and use iTunes for Windows too but not for
managing devices; I only do this on my mac. With iTunes for Windows I
just use the store and occasionally import CDs.

Of course this is JMO.

Are there Windows tools to do this? I'm not real fond of iTunes for Windows.
I think buying a couple of ring tones was a big waste because when I restarted

Hi all,
Please check out a fairly new paid project called Waltr from
www.softarena.com basically it takes the hassle out of iTunes
altogether. Connect your device before starting the app, open the
music or video you wish to upload, and it will magically not only be
added to your device but also make it available for native playback.
Unfortunately Waltr is a Mac app and can only be downloaded and
bought directly from the above website. I am in contact with one of
the developers, Josh, so I will see if he will consider porting it to
other platforms. So that's Waltr, w a l t r, from www.softarena.com I
hope you find this useful.
