RE: Turning off password

2014-12-22 Thread Margaret Booth
Hi Sieghard

I understand what you are saying about passcodes.

Can you please tell me where in settings I can set up touch ID.

I have looked in Settings and I can’t find it.

Hi Margaret,

You can’t turn passcode off if you want to use Touch Id. Passcode is your fail
save, after all, what happens if for some reason the fingerprint reader doesn’t
unlock your phone. In this case and also after a reboot of the phone you will
have to enter your passcode. As Christopher pointed out, you manage both
passcode and touch Id in Settings. If you have a passcode you will have to
enter the passcode again as soon as you are trying to get into the passcode
area. This would prevent somebody from removing or changing the passcode if
they got hold of your phone while it was unlocked.

Setting up a fingerprint is simple, just tap to add a fingerprint and then
follow the instructions and place your finger onto the home button multiple
times. At some point when you are mostly done it will ask you to capture the
edges of your print and show a picture of a person holding an iPhone and you
have to first tap on continue, then do as instructed and capture the edges of
your print. When it is done you will get a message that you can now use your
fingerprint to unlock the phone.

The way I do this is to press the home button briefly, it still has to be
pressed so the phone wakes up and the touch Id sensor starts doing it’s thing.
I just press and let go and then lightly leave my thumb on the home button for
maybe a second or so and usually that is all it takes to unlock the phone. It
works super good, it’s typically very reliable and I’d say it works 100%
perfect at least 9 out of 10 times I use it.

Sieghard

If I were to do it over the air as you wrote in your first reply, will the
update once installed take up 1.4 ggs or will it still hog space?
I'm also trying to find where in the Dresner book it tells you how
to synch your iphone to your computer. It says it's in Part 1. If I
understand what I've read so far, backupping up your phone can be done via I
cloud or I tunes. I want to do it through I tunes. I only hope my old
computer can support both new and old versions of all these updates.
Behalf Of Christopher Chaltain
Subject: Re: usage on an old 4S

I think you already got an answer to this, but if you're not going to use a
computer then you'll be doing an over the air update and you'll need to have
over 5G free on your phone to give IOS enough room to be downloaded and
unpacked.
If you need to free up space to do an over the air update, you can also
uninstall apps. Reinstalling them after your update is easy enough..
Just go into the Updates tab of the App Store and double tap the install
button.

Are you saying here that Fingerprint can't (or is best if you don't) use it

Or can you set up one or the other?

iTunes log in

2014-12-22 Thread Deidre Muccio
Last question of the day: I downloaded iTunes courtesy the link Ben
provided. When I update using iTunes, will I need to create a new log in or
will I be able to use the same log in on the apple account? I would like to
know what I'm in for later today when I have time to take care of this.

RE: Turning off password

2014-12-22 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Margaret,

It’s just in the main Settings menu right after Sounds and before Privacy. If
you are swiping and start at the top, it’s 14 swipes right if your first swipe
takes you to Airplane mode.

This is a good example where the item chooser comes in handy. You know it
should e in Settings, but you can’t for some reason find it. Bring up the item
chooser with a 2-finger triple tap.

If I do this on my 5S, it will say “item chooser” followed by how many items it
pulled into the list and then it will say “search field”. This means focus is
on the searchfield and you just have to double tap to enter editing mode. If I
now start to enter the word “touch”, it narrows down the results with each
letter I type. When I type the “t” it says “item chooser, 37 items”, when I
type the “o” it now says “item chooser, 6 items” and if I type the “u” it now
is down to 1 item which if you check the screen is “Touch Id and Passcode”.

Good luck,

Sieghard

Subject: RE: Turning off password

Regards,

Sieghard

RE: old version of ITunes for XP

2014-12-22 Thread Alan Lemly
The version of iTunes you run is more about what works with your iDevice and
its version of iOS. Also, older computers running 32-bit versions of Windows
must use the appropriate iTunes and not a 64-bit version.

You might not want to install iTunes 12.x if you enjoy the sidebar window
since that was removed from iTunes 12. I find that iTunes 11.1.6 runs very
well on my Windows XP system.

Here is a link to an Apple download page that has some older versions of
iTunes as well as the latest version. Depending on your iDevice, you might
consider iTunes 11.1.5 for Windows 32-bit:

Go to Control Center by touching the status bar and swiping up with three

Re: Accessible photo slides app

Check out Replay. It seemed somewhat accessible when I played around with it
just after the Apple Event this Fall.
The basic functions are free. I think there are some in app purchases but have
no idea how much or what they give you that the free stuff doesn't.

Re: usage on an old 4S

2014-12-22 Thread Christopher Chaltain
The extra space you need is just during the install process. You need
some working space to hold the unpacked files while they're being
installed. You're using space on the computer to do this when using
iTunes. When installing over the air, you have to use the space on your
device. Once it's installed, it shouldn't take up any more space either
way you install it. All of the interim files, including the downloaded
update, all get removed after the install.

On 12/22/2014 06:09 AM, Deidre Muccio wrote:

Chris

Just go into the Updates tab of the App Store and double tap the install
button.

RE: A gift from the creator of GigDaddy Multi-Track mixer

2014-12-22 Thread Brett
Hi Richard,

Thanks for forwarding on to him.

Yes, you can do it through the HTTP transfer protocol, but if I am going to do
it on the iPhone in the first place I would prefer to be able to go all the way
on the iPhone without having to revert to the PC. It would be a handy option to
have anyway, since most other apps can already do this. The problem is when I
am mucking around with my guitar if I get a good idea and want to find
something else that works with it, I like to pan the previous recording to the
left track so that the whole thing isn't in mono. GigDaddy is the only one that
I have found that will allow me to do this, but I can't directly import/export
from other apps which would be handy.

Cheers,
Brett.

even turned on the screen curtain when he was working on the app to
make sure he understood how a blind person would interact with the
iPhone. In fact, he spent most of a day using VoiceOver with the screen
 curtain on.

I think the result was quite excellent. Now, I'm not a professional
musician, just a dabbler. I'm not even an expert with the app, but if
people get the app, I'll try and help, and you can also get help from
the developer. I wrote him this last week asking if he was planning
to update the app. He hadn't updated it since November 2011. It
works fine in iOS 8.1.2, but I think with the new features available
in iOS 8, he could make it better than it already is. He wrote me
back and said he has plans this next year to take some time off from

 The app is only $2.99.

have decided on the following way to give away the 12 codes.

 1. Do not, and I repeat, do not write to the list to get a code. The
list does not need more traffic.

 2. Only those who write me privately will have a chance to get a code.

 3. Send a message to me with the subject exactly as I am about to give
it because I will create a filter looking for this exact phrase,
 without the
quotes: GigDaddy give-away and send it to: rich...@turner42.com
 mailto:rich...@turner42.com

The first 12 people who write me following the above guidelines will
 receive a code.

I will let everyone know when they are given away. The codes expire

 Happy recording,

The version of iTunes you run is more about what works with your iDevice
 and
its version of iOS. Also, older computers running 32-bit versions of
 Windows
must use the appropriate iTunes and not a 64-bit version.

 Hi,

Click this https://ninite.com/itunes/ link then click the download
 installer
link if the download doesn't start automatically. Once the Ninite program
opens it will download install iTunes for you without you having to do
 anything.

 Cheers,

RE: Sonos setup

2014-12-22 Thread Jim Ruby
Hi, just a note about the sonos customer service. I had a problem with my sub,
it had alight hum, even when not playing music and all accessories were all
powered off. He wanted to factory reset it, and since you needed to see a light
change color, I told him I could not see the light and I had no one to help me,
he just did an exchange, no questions asked. He was very nice courteous and
helpful. I’m very happy with the sound. Wish they would expand beyond dolbey
5.1 to 7.1 or even 9.1 for those who are interested in to such things and the
ability to decode dts format since somethings use that. When I enquired about
this they said that is beyond what sonos does and not many things will be
encoded using dts. Since I just dabble and just love good sound and effects I
can’t say if this is true or not, but since it is software based, it could be
updated to support it if there is enough interest.

In short I’m happey I made the move to Sonos and plan to expand around the
house.

Subject: Sonos setup

Hi,

Thanks to Sieghard, Neal and many others on this list, I’ve taken the plunge
with Sonos.

So far, I totally love the sound. I haven’t had such great access to music and
quality of music reproduction for years.

I bought 4 Play3 speakers to setup as 2 stereo pairs in our 2 most frequently
used rooms.

I called Sonos help twice, both in anticipation of setting up the system. With
this background, I was able to set up the system without problem in about 30
minutes.

The help I got from the Sonos rep by phone proved most useful to me. Maybe
there’s other ways to get the info, but it’s the only install guidance I
received.

The first bit of information I got was how to power on the speaker. The Sonos
app refers the user to a diagram that wasn’t described. Looking at the speaker
from the front grill, with the speaker placed horizontally, there are two
buttons on the top of the unit. The first from the front is a rectangular,
rocker-style button. This is the Volume Up and Down. Depressing this rocker on
the front edge is Volume Down; depressing this button on the back edge is
Volume Up. Behind this rectangular button is a square button which serves as
Play / Pause, or sometimes known as Mute. To Power on a unit, simultaneously
depress Volume Up button and the Mute button, then release.

The second bit of useful information I got was the procedure for setting up 4
new speakers. Although Sonos operating system is now capable of wireless setup,
the rep suggested he had no way of knowing if all the units I received were
wireless capable out of the box. He suggested I use a temporary wired setup.
This worked like a charm. I Ethernet connected from the router to the first of
my Sonos speakers and followed the setup on the app. It then asked me to set up
the next. The 2nd through 4th speakers setup wirelessly, with each unit
positioned where it will live. Once I was done building my system, the app
completed a software update of all the units, thus ensuring that any future
setup could be done entirely by wireless. I was then able to disconnect the
temporary wired unit and position it where it now lives, all units being
entirely wireless.

Several steps in individual unit setup referred to green light or white light
or blinking light indicators on the speaker, but each of these was associated
with spoken guidance of waiting “a minute or so” or “a few seconds.” I couldn’t
tell the light status at any of these steps, but following the time guidance, I
encountered no problems.

After that, just some trial and error with the app to get music playing, and
that was all it took!

Best, Keith

Choppy Apple TV

2014-12-22 Thread Mary Otten
Hi all, I have an older Apple TV, the first model that had voiceover. I have it
connected to a TV through HDMI.
It works fine through the internal lousy TV speakers. When I connect my sound
bar to the TV using the TV optical output from the TV to my sound bar,
voiceover becomes very choppy and inconsistent, to the point to that sometimes
I hear no voice over output at all for the currently focused menu item. I had
this same problem with a different set up with the same Apple TV, and thought
it was a problem with either the cable or the AV receiver I was using. Has
anyone experienced this? I am now believing there is a problem with my AppleTV,
and I should just go buy another one. But I would sure hate to get stuck with
$100 loser. Still, it is hard for me to believe that this problem with optical
outs from a TV to a sound bar or anything to do with optical out on the AppleTV
would cause a problem. Surely, you can't just use it with the HDMI and your TV
speakers only?

I think the end goal here is to install IOS 8.1.2. Will you need iTunes
12 to do that on a 4S?

You might not want to install iTunes 12.x if you enjoy the sidebar window
since that was removed from iTunes 12. I find that iTunes 11.1.6 runs very
well on my Windows XP system.

Here is a link to an Apple download page that has some older versions of
iTunes as well as the latest version. Depending on your iDevice, you might
consider iTunes 11.1.5 for Windows 32-bit:

Hi,

Click this https://ninite.com/itunes/ link then click the download
installer link if the download doesn't start automatically. Once the
Ninite program opens it will download install iTunes for you without
you having to do anything.

Cheers,

RE: old version of ITunes for XP

2014-12-22 Thread Alan Lemly
I checked the version of iTunes that was needed to work with the new iPhone
6 when it came out last September and believe it had to be iTunes 11.4 or
higher. I don't know if this was in order for it to be compatible with the
iPhone 6 hardware or for compatibility with iOS 8.x.

I prefer the iTunes 11.x version since I like the sidebar but I guess you'll
just have to try it with a 4S running iOS 8.1.2 to see if it works.

RE: going on vacation

Hi Martin,

Try the second unlabeled button and let me know if that worked, I’m pretty sure
it’s the one you need. Anyhow, there is little harm in trying to see what the
buttons do. Oh, by the way, I think you have to activate them with the spacebar
rather than the enter key.

of messages from this list. Sieghard explained how to do this. I have tried to
follow the steps outlined but I can't find anything after signing in that says

Has anyone else been able to find the option to change to no mail?

Thank you in advance for any help.

RE: Choppy Apple TV

2014-12-22 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Mary,

I can't speak for your particular setup. I have a second generation Apple TV as
well and while I used to have a Sony surround receiver which was connected to
wired speakers, I have switched to a Sonos setup with the Sonos Playbar
(soundbar) and I connect my Apple TV as well as my satellite receiver to the
HDMI inputs on my TV, then the TV to the Playbar with an optical cable. For me
this setup works perfectly, no issues whatsoever with the Apple TV.

Keep in mind that you can always go and buy an Apple TV and return it if you
find it does the same. In this case at least you know it's not the Apple TV
which causes the problem.

Sieghard
