Re: IPhone 6 ios8.1.3 and contacts

2015-02-05 Thread Christopher Chaltain
If you're talking about the Contacts app then yes, you should be able to
move it to a home screen. I don't know where it starts by default, I
think it's the Utilities folder, but you should be able to double tap
and hold on any app in that folder until you hear the chime. Once you
hear the chime double tap and hold on the Contacts app and then move it
to the left until you hear leaving folder. That should be it.

I just checked my updates in the App Store. One of the apps I have is urban
spoon. There is an update. Next to the update it says don't update to this
we have found a serious problem. Or words to that effect.this has nothing to
do with excess ability. Is just a problem that they found with the app after
it was released. I have seen this with other apps in the past. And then, of
course, there are the apps which went updated, result in excess ability
loser time.
It seems to me that Apple needs to make it easier for us to go back to the
previous version, without relying on iTunes backups on our computers. They
have made it easy, and indeed they encourage, The use of over the air
update. That only works as long as the update works as well or better than
the application it was replacing. There are enough examples where that is
simply not true. So it is time for Apple to give us more power and make it
possible for us to regress to a previous version without resorting to the
complicated nonsense of iTunes backup on our computers. This is especially
true, given the inaccessibility of the latest iTunes for Windows. Lucky for
me, I have a Mac, so I don't have to deal with that. But there certainly
have been times when iTunes for mac was problematic. So, come on Apple. Let
us have more freedom to control our devices as we see fit and as may indeed
prove necessary.

Re: KNFB Reader

2015-02-05 Thread Christopher Chaltain
Everything I've read on this list says that the KNFB Reader works fine
on the 4S, but it's just a bit slower, which would be expected given
that the 4S runs a slower processor.

As far as support is concerned, the 4S is supported and is listed on the
KNFB web site as a supported device at http://www.knfbreader.com/ You'll
get support for KNFB Reader on the 4S just as you would on any other
supported device.

This is a good example of why you shouldn't rely exclusively on answers
to questions on lists of users like this. People will tell you what they
think or what they've heard, which may not be correct. In this case, the
correct answer is just a Google search away.

Note that I'm not saying people shouldn't ask questions on list. Lists
are a very important source of information, but remember you're talking
to other users and not paid tech support. I also don't think people are
intentionally passing along misinformation. Like I said, there sometimes
just going on what they've heard or what they remember from the past.

The problem on initial setup is not whether your cellular connection is
already working or not, it is that SIRI needs to be enabled during the setup

 HiNeal,

The problem on initial setup is not whether your cellular connection is
already working or not, it is that SIRI needs to be enabled during the setup
process. I believe it is the second on third thing you do, after you
swipe/double tap to get past the welcome message, the first item is to
connect to a WiFi, I believe then it will ask if you want to use SIRI.

Hi, this information is only correct if you are buying from Apple
directly if you're buying from a carrier, and they're activating the
phone the triple click home is deactivated a does nothing. So
therefore you have to going to settings general, and accessibility
enter voiceover, in order to turn it on. And Isaac you might want to

Re: Baum V.S. Braille Edge

2015-02-05 Thread Richard Turner
John,
I am sory I was giving old price information. When their representative came to
our agency early last Fall, the price she gave for the 40 was 3395.
So, I'm not sure it is worth 1000 more than the braille edge. That would be a
hard choice. Is 32 GB of internal memory, the ability to connect to 4 bluetooth
devices and the pdf and excell viewer worth that much?
I don't know.
At work, I have a Braille Edge and really like it.
I think if I were looking to get one for myself, I would settle for the 20 cell
Vario Ultra for the portability.
I hope you can feel good about which ever one you choose. Baum products are
extremely well made, so maybe the 40 is worth that much more.
Good luck,
Richard

RE: [497261] Itunes 12.1

2015-02-05 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Fanus,

I remember seeing one message a few days ago where a Windows Eyes user stated
the latest update had similar problems with Windows Eyes. It is, however, not
the first time an iTunes update required Freedom Scientific to incorporate a
fix in a Jaws update. If this is the case I assume Freedom Scientific will get
this done fairly quickly. Maybe somebody like Jonathan would know more as to
whether this is indeed an issue which requires a Jaws update/fix rather than an
iTunes update/fix.

I sent an email to Apple's accessibility people and the answer warries me a

other screen readers need to be upgraded. From that I assume that Apple is not
going to do anything about the problem.

you want to call X? I hate that. I wanted just to call who I asked it to
call, what it used to do in ios7. Is there a way to stop this unnecessary

RE: IPhone 6 and triple click Home

2015-02-05 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Marie,

That is correct. When you first turn on the phone, a triple click of the home
button will start Voiceover. You will be at the screen where you get the
Hello/Welcome message in all sorts of languages and you just double tap to
start setting up your phone. I recently purchased an iPhone 6 for my wife and
one thing I found was that for some reason it took a long time for the triple
click home to actually start Voiceover. I turned on the phone, waited about 45
seconds which normally is more than enough and then tried it and nothing
happened. I waited longer and tried again with no success. I then asked one of
my employees to come to the office to take a look, it probably was 5 minutes
after I started the phone and then when I tried it for some reason worked.
Maybe this was just an oddity. I would recommend you maybe don’t even try to
turn on the phone with the power button, but rather just plug in the Lightning
cable which will also start up the phone and the advantage is that you usually
get a short vibration once it starts. I’d probably wait another minute, then
press the home button once to wake up the phone and then press it 3 times
quickly and it should work fine.

Also, keep in mind that by default typing mode is set to standard typing. One
of the first things you will be asked to do when you set up your phone is to
connect to your WiFi. I usually use touch typing and always turn the rotor to
Typing Mode right away when I am in the edit field for my WiFi password and
change it to touch typing, then I turn it back to characters and I’m good to go
from there on with touch typing.

Good luck and enjoy,

Sieghard

I know that with IOS 8 the triple click home can be assigned to several things
but I assume the default when you first turn on the phone is to activate
Voiceover. Is this assumption correct? Looking forward to purchasing the 6 soon
and since I live alone I don’t want to need assistance to set it up.

Thanks, Marie

You can press the home button and do a 2 finger flick up that would normally
read the screen. Immediately press the volume up button and this should make Vo

As a suggestion, maybe your wife could try turning the mute switch on and this
might silence the game sounds. Then it would be easy for you to turn sounds back

I don't know.

I think if I were looking to get one for myself, I would settle for

I hope you can feel good about which ever one you choose. Baum

In iOS eight, Siri alwaysasks after I tell it to call someone, to confirm
do you want to call X? I hate that. I wanted just to call who I asked it
to call, what it used to do in ios7. Is there a way to stop this
unnecessary interaction between me and Siri which makes calling someone
so much less efficient?

Hi all,
Just found a cool way to activate hey Siri even when not plugged in to AC
power. If the Siri screen is active, I mean the one with listen at the
bottom, you can issue a Siri prompt with hey Siri' voice command even if

Re: KNFB Reader

2015-02-05 Thread Ann Marie Medlar

Sorry I googled it:
All of us at K-NFB and Sensotec are truly gratified with the worldwide
interest expressed in the KNFB Reader iOS app, said James Gashel, Vice
President of Business Development at K-NFB Reading Technology. The app has
been built for use with iPhone 5 or above, and running iOS 7 or higher. Our
plan to coordinate its release with iOS 8 will best assure that the app
works as intended for all users without any interruption or possible need to
uninstall and upgrade due to Apple’s newest operating system release.

So I'll wait until I learn IPhone4S before upgrading.

to schedule some of the sessions and other events in either the native
calendar or Fantastical 2 but I have some questions about the multiple
time zones. I live in Central time but the events of course would be

specifically when making the appointment, or do I schedule in Central
and let the iPhone's clock adjust the time zones? As of yet I haven't
run into this issue before with the calendar, and don't want an
appointment that I set for an 8am start to actually occur at 6am when
I'm in California. Using an iPhone 6 with iOS 8.1.3.

get a phone from their carrier the triple click home does turn on Voiceover.

Hi, this information is only correct if you are buying from Apple directly if
you're buying from a carrier, and they're activating the phone the triple click
home is deactivated a does nothing. So therefore you have to going to settings

RE: IPhone 6 and triple click Home

2015-02-05 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
HiNeal,

The problem on initial setup is not whether your cellular connection is already
working or not, it is that SIRI needs to be enabled during the setup process. I
believe it is the second on third thing you do, after you swipe/double tap to
get past the welcome message, the first item is to connect to a WiFi, I believe
then it will ask if you want to use SIRI.

iPhone accessibility tweets

2015-02-05 Thread Traci Duncan
Hi all,

Does anyone take the route of tweeting app developers about accessibility?
This seems like an instant option.

Something I’m curious about is there any well known accessibility hashtags? I
want to tweet Ultimate Ears about their latest app update. We can now power on
our UE Booms via the app, however the power button in the app is not visible to
VoiceOver.

So, do you guys use any hashtags consistently? Hashtag: VoiceOver,
AppleAccessibility, etc.?

Thank you,
Traci

A little side note, anyone who owns the UE Boom, it can now be updated
wirelessly. Not sure if that will be accessible though. Lol!

Scheduling events in multiple time zones

2015-02-05 Thread Wayne Merritt
Greetings all. I will be going to the CSUN conference in March. I want
to schedule some of the sessions and other events in either the native
calendar or Fantastical 2 but I have some questions about the multiple
time zones. I live in Central time but the events of course would be
in Pacific. How would I do this? Do I need to schedule in PST
specifically when making the appointment, or do I schedule in Central
and let the iPhone's clock adjust the time zones? As of yet I haven't
run into this issue before with the calendar, and don't want an
appointment that I set for an 8am start to actually occur at 6am when
I'm in California. Using an iPhone 6 with iOS 8.1.3.

Thanks all,
Wayne Merritt

Re: sudoku alternatives anyone?

2015-02-05 Thread Ioana Gandrabur
Basically the first step for solving sudoku puzzles would be to mark down all
possible candidatesfor each cell. All numbers that could work in one cell
without it already existing in its row columnor cell. This is tedious and does
not require much logic so some apps fill those in for you. Then the fun beginns
to start eliminating candidates until the only one remaining is the correct
one. I would like to save a puzzle for future redo option starting from this
stage with all candidates filled in. Hope this made sense

Asking SIRI to turn on Voiceover on a brandnew phone will not work because

 HiNeal,

The problem on initial setup is not whether your cellular connection is
already working or not, it is that SIRI needs to be enabled during the setup
process. I believe it is the second on third thing you do, after you
swipe/double tap to get past the welcome message, the first item is to
connect to a WiFi, I believe then it will ask if you want to use SIRI.

therefore you have to going to settings general, and accessibility

Automatic update and why Apple needs to take more steps

2015-02-05 Thread Mary Otten
I just checked my updates in the App Store. One of the apps I have is urban
spoon. There is an update. Next to the update it says don't update to this we
have found a serious problem. Or words to that effect.this has nothing to do
with excess ability. Is just a problem that they found with the app after it
was released. I have seen this with other apps in the past. And then, of
course, there are the apps which went updated, result in excess ability loser
time.
It seems to me that Apple needs to make it easier for us to go back to the
previous version, without relying on iTunes backups on our computers. They have
made it easy, and indeed they encourage, The use of over the air update. That
only works as long as the update works as well or better than the application
it was replacing. There are enough examples where that is simply not true. So
it is time for Apple to give us more power and make it possible for us to
regress to a previous version without resorting to the complicated nonsense of
iTunes backup on our computers. This is especially true, given the
inaccessibility of the latest iTunes for Windows. Lucky for me, I have a Mac,
so I don't have to deal with that. But there certainly have been times when
iTunes for mac was problematic. So, come on Apple. Let us have more freedom to
control our devices as we see fit and as may indeed prove necessary.

Re: Scheduling events in multiple time zones

2015-02-05 Thread Christopher Chaltain
You've probably already figured this out, and it's been a while since
I've taken my iPhone across time zones where I've had to worry about
calendar events, but here's what I think you need to do.

If an event is scheduled for 8AM Pacific or 10AM Central, and you're
currently in the Central time zone then schedule the event for 10AM.
Once you show up in the Pacific time zone, your phone should reset
itself and the appointment should be scheduled at 8AM local time.

Note I usually schedule events in Google Calendar or subscribe to a
conferences ical calendar, but I always check to see if the time zones
have sorted themselves out when I get to the event.

On 02/05/2015 12:21 PM, Kramlinger, Keith G., M.D. wrote:

No. All you need to do is make sure your phone time indicates the current local
time on the day in question. So, if it's 6pm local time and your phone tells

time from the cell tower, I believe.

Thanks all,

Hi Tracy, a lot of people simply use #accessibility. Some use #A11Y, I
personally strongly advise against doing this, as those outside the
accessibility industry have no clue what it means, so it's likely to confuse,

No. All you need to do is make sure your phone time indicates the current local
time on the day in question. So, if it's 6pm local time and your phone tells
you it is 6pm phone time, you're good to go. Your phone will pull the local

Greetings all. I will be going to the CSUN conference in March. I want

Subject: Scheduling events in multiple time zones

 Thanks all,

All I can remember is that it was some ttype of card game, I think called 52

Any help is appreciated.

volume controls

2015-02-05 Thread Deidre Muccio
Hello
For awhile the volume on my phone was equal no matter what app I was in or
if I got a phone call or used Siri. Now Siri is louder than everything else
and the phone is the lowest.
Which of the volume controls are independent of other things going
on on the phone?
How can I best get everything in sync?

Deidre

Cool discovery for hey Siri feature

2015-02-05 Thread Ioana Gandrabur
Hi all,
Just found a cool way to activate hey Siri even when not plugged in to AC
power. If the Siri screen is active, I mean the one with listen at the bottom,
you can issue a Siri prompt with hey Siri' voice command even if your device
is not plugged in.
May come in handy at times so thought I'd share in case others did not know
about this like me.

Best,

Ioana

Re: volume controls

2015-02-05 Thread Joseph Hudson
Hello, if you want to make serial volume lower hold down the home button until
you hear too beeps, then hold on the vine button for a few seconds, and that
we'll make series of I am lower. Danny if you want to adjust the voiceover
volume, had the screen unlocked, and while touching the screen tap on the
volume button a couple times and that well lower arrays of I am depending on
what you're wanting to do. The top one is up, and the bottom one is lower. I
hope this helps you.
