Can anyone recommend any accessible e-mail providers apart from Gmail?

2015-03-27 Thread Eleanor Roberts
Hi all

I know this is a bit of a random question, but I'm looking to set up another
e-mail account as well as the Gmail one I already have. So was just wondering
if anyone could recommend any other e-mail providers which are as
good/accessible as Gmail? I have my Apple training session this afternoon, so
any suggestions before then would be much appreciated, then I can get them to
help me set it up. My main reason for having one is so I can have a rescue
e-mail for my Apple security, though I am also in the process of trying to sort
out 2-step verification for that (if that works then as I understand it the
e-mail address will become irrelevant).

But nevertheless, any ideas on accessible e-mail providers would be much
appreciated, as it's always good/useful to know.

Thanks.

Eleanor

Many thanks.

And if I didn’t know how to do that, how would I know that the same speech rate
setting gave different results in the different languages? This is something
that changed with iOS8.

Re: Can anyone recommend any accessible e-mail providers apart from Gmail?

2015-03-27 Thread RobH.
Most of mine are hosting packages where one buys their own domain name,
space on server space to host it, then you do web site, ftp things, mail
accounts and all manner of things. But mail accounts in particular since
that is what you asked for. Those services use an interface called cPanel,
and you do your adminin there and it is accessible, or mostly and usually.
There are subtle varations of version which impinge on this occasionally.

But once you set your own details, then enter them into your iDevice, it
works as good as anything. Webmail remains an option, though logging in
and dealing with it all through a web page is a little more tiresome, but
accessible if not on your own computer.

Bravenet offered starter packages of this, though they littered the cheap
end with ad's just like Yahoo and AOL, so it is not a recommendation, though
did start there. I use 3 different suppliers in the UK, so they must exist
over there in the same manner.

Look at visn.co.uk, krystal.co.uk, and fvs.com I think it is; for examples.

Re: In My Iphone5, Speech rate Gets Doubled When Changing Language On Rotor

2015-03-27 Thread David Chittenden
Actually, this did not change with iOS 8. Different speech engines are set with
differing standard point speeds. I became aware of this in iOS 7 when I
installed multiple english voices and experimented with them. Fortunately, in
iOS 8 at least, one can easily adjust the speech rate.

Reminder on iPhone 5 plus

2015-03-27 Thread Tom Rash
Has anyone noticed a change in reminders? It wasn't with the last update,
but one or two prior to that. I used to set up my reminders to alert me of
a doctor appointment the day before. Example:
Hold home button, then speak "set a reminder for April 2." Then Siri,
"What do you want to be reminded about?" "I have a doctor appointment
tomorrow at 3:00?"
Now when I do this every time the time is dropped off from the actual
reminders that is spoken back. The reminder will go off the day before like
I scheduled it 24 hours before the appointment, but the time is not spoken.
I can get used to it, but has anyone noticed that the time will not be
repeated in the message.

My iPhone has stopped saying things like "Closing app switcher" when I
flick up with three fingers or "one of ..." whatever number when I
double-tape a status item to get to the top of a list like a Twitter

What do you mean by an accessible email provider? As long as you can get
the POP or IMAP settings, any email provider is accessible with an
accessible local client. Are you talking about an accessible web
interface? I know AOL used to have a good accessible web interface, but
other than Google, I haven't used an email provider's web interface in
forever.

You do know you can set up more than one Gmail account, right?

I do not know of other free Email account providers.
Juno.com may still have a free service with ads at the bottom of all your
messages.
I know they also have a very inexpensive service that still puts ads at the
bottom of all your messages. I think my wife pays about $10 per year or
something. She has always only had the one juno account since the mid-90s.

RE: Which are the best programs?

2015-03-27 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
You can use Dropbox or Microsoft OneDrive to access documents on your iPhone,
but if you are talking about adding things like music or ringtones then you
have to use iTunes.

As for a world clock, it's right there inside the clock app that is on you r
iPhone, it's the tab at the bottom left and it comes with a few cities by
default but you can delete them and add your own. Of course you can also ask
SIRI. For example, what time is it in Tokyo? What time is it in Capetown?

Subject: Which are the best programs?

Hello all
I have just got one of those cool mini seika braille displays which
I'm hoping to use with the IPhone as a student, now I'd like some
solutions. (I don't have an IPad, so I'm hoping that I can use the
IPhone just as good for what I'd like)
I'd basically like to know what programs you guys who use braille
keyboards use for the following:
1. Managing your life, i.e calendar, putting in important dates, tests
and so on. Is the normal Calendar OK, or do you guys use something
really better?
2. Word Processing. I'd like to be able to do two types of things, one
is to write long documents, i.e lecture notes, but then I'd also like
another program or solution that if someone mentions something like an
important detail while I'm just out somewhere I could quickly be able
to write it down and then somehow just organise all the quick notes I
make, so this wouldn't be a question of having to write long notes,
more about having to write something you hear very quickly and to be
able to access and organise such things very quickly. So I wouldn't
like to have to go through a whole long process to actually start the
app if I just hear something I want to quickly write.
On that subject, would you guys recommend then disabling the feature
to make your phones lock, especially as I'd not like to have to take
it out and use the touch screen and then can only use the keyboard?
I'd like to use the keyboard for nearly everything and just keep the
phone somewhere else without having to bother with two devices.
3. Is there really no other easier way to move documents or books or
things you'd like to read to and from the IPhone than with ITunes, I
really hate it? I'd basically love to move things more to the phone
instead of from it. Yeah I know about emailing them, but sometimes I
just don't have access to wifi, so would rather like some other
answer.
4. Sorry for so many questions, last one I promise, is there a nice
and accessible world clock sort of app?
Thank you so much for all your help.

Re: Can anyone recommend any accessible e-mail providers apart from Gmail?

2015-03-27 Thread Alex Hall
IMAP is definitely best, but remember that setting up server-side filters still
requires an accessible client. There's also auto-responding, forwarding, and
other settings to consider.

As to providers, I've not used any aside from Gmail (good) and iCloud
(currently terrible on the web, great in local clients). I've heard really good
things about Outlook.com, though, so you might give that a try.

RE: Can anyone recommend any accessible e-mail providers apart from Gmail?

2015-03-27 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Eleanore,

The main one that comes to mind is Outlook.com from Microsoft (used to be
Hotmail/Windows Live Mail). I know a lot of people like gmail, but I always
thought Outlook.com especially in the last couple of years is a superior
service because I feel Exchange Active Sync is a better protocol than IMAP.
That is my opinion and I don't want to start a big discussion about Exchange
Active Sync versus IMAP, but I have been a very happy Outlook.com user for many
years, you can use Push which doesn't work with IMAP and I prefer the more
traditional folder structure over the labels used in gmail.

Re: Can anyone recommend any accessible e-mail providers apart from Gmail?

2015-03-27 Thread Christopher Chaltain
IMAP can be the way to go if you're accessing your email from multiple
clients and you want to use the cloud to sync your email across all of
those clients. I wouldn't say it's superior in every way though. Some
people don't want to have their email stored in the cloud. POP can also
perform better. If you're accessing your email from just one system then
IMAP may not be the way to go.

BTW, as far as I know AOL, Apple, Yahoo, Microsoft and Google all
provide free email service. You may also want to check your ISP as well.
I used to have an account on Road Runner, and I now have a second
account on SuddenLink, which I use in the way you describe below
Eleanor. I'm sure a Google search will give you the list of the best
free email providers. I don't know which of these would have accessible
interfaces though.

To delete the group from your phone first open messages.
Next swipe to the message that you want to delete in your case that would be
the message containing the group.
Then swipe down to the delete option and then double tap.

Re: is there a streaming audio app like the former flipzu out there?

2015-03-27 Thread Jonathan Mosen
Hi Cory, yes, Flipzu was an absolutely brilliant app. The closest I've found to
it at the moment is Spreaker.
I'm also not interested in video, it takes up bandwidth that I don't want to
consume, and that's a factor especially when using mobile data.
Another option that's a bit more intensive to set up is to get yourself a
Shoutcast server and stream that way.

Re: nls bard question

2015-03-27 Thread Alan J Paganelli
I suspect when they came out with the Bard Reading App that they had no clue
as to just how many blind iPhone users there actually were around. And, for
example, at any given time I may have 40 NLS books and magazines on my 64
gig iPhone 5s. When they show the latest new books and I spot one I want to
read, it get downloaded for future reading and I suspect many other blind
folks do the same thing. I also believe that in time NLS will add more
servers as money permits.

I've found that downloading a book during the day time takes longer to
download then it does late at night.

I would like to see them figure out a way to let youstart reading a book on
your iPhone and finish or pickup where you left off on your iPad. Perhaps
they'll figure out something one day.

Don,

I think the step you're missing is to first add the book you want to your
wish list. You then go to your wish list by selecting the get books button
which is second from the left on the BARD mobile app bottomline menu. On
the screen which opens, select your wish list and when you double tap on
the desired book in the list, the download should begin.

When you search BARD using the app's search box or by browsing by the
provided links, the add to wish list link should be obvious for each book.

Good luck but post back if you have more questions.

Actually, this did not change with iOS 8. Different speech engines are set
with differing standard point speeds. I became aware of this in iOS 7 when I
installed multiple english voices and experimented with them. Fortunately,
in iOS 8 at least, one can easily adjust the speech rate.

Re: Is there a flash light app for the ipad that works the same as the one that comes on the iPhone

2015-03-27 Thread Alex Hall
No, because the iPad lacks a light. For whatever reason, Apple hasn't seen fit
to install an LED light source in any of its mobile devices except the iPhone
lineup. The best you could do is make the screen shine really bright, but that
wouldn't help much, I imagine.

Re: Can anyone recommend any accessible e-mail providers apart from Gmail?

2015-03-27 Thread Eleanor Roberts
Hi all

Thanks so muchh for all the useful information. I checked with my trainer this
afternoon and I can't use my Icloud e-mail account as my rescue e-mail address
in my Apple security settings. So I've got to set up an e-mail address which
isn't Icloud for that purpose (so I can access my rescue e-mails if/when I need
them). So I'll definitely be looking at the services you've all mentioned.

Many thanks.

Re: Unjoining a group on Facebook.

2015-03-27 Thread jazzyjennifer
when you hit the more button your going to see things like events near
buy placesfind apps pages. create page. then after that is groups. you
want to dubble tap that. some times you have to eather wait a few
seconds after tapping the more button, or you have to slide your finger
across the screan to get to that side of the page. then you can continue
swiping. to get to groups, casue face book app is funny like that at
times, there's times where i have to slide my finger left and right or
up and down. til i get to events you could probley even do the three
finger swipe up too, to switch rows. til you get to events. then from
there on out i usely am able to swipe right with one finger to get to
groups. but yeah its doable. you have to pick and play with it. to get
to groups.

Hi Cory

Thanks for getting in touch.

We would very much like to do this, and we have looked at it recently.
Unfortunately there are technical reasons to do with how the app has
been built that make it difficult for us.

This is definitely on our list and I’m sorry that we haven’t managed to
make this happen yet. Watch this space for more news.

Kind regards

I believe you are correct because I just went back into the store and was able
to do the updates. Thanks.

Hi,

I had this problem earlier, but everything is working normally now. So I think
Apple must have fixed whatever glitch they had earlier.

Best,
Anna

Hi, I had this problem in the way I seem to solve that is to go into the App
Store and do an update all. That seem to do the trick of coarse I didn't get to
update the apps on a piecemeal basis but that's okay.

IPhone6 running 8.2. The last updates seems to have gotten stuck in the app

updates available. When I open the store and go to updates, they are listed
under the available updates header but the update all button is dimmed and
beneath each app it says open instead of update. I check and the apps installed
on the phone are earlier versions so I am stumped. does anyone have a clue
before I call Apple. Already re-booted the phone and tried a reset with the
home and power keys with no change.

Most Efficient Way To Move .brf Files From Dropbox to iCloud?

2015-03-27 Thread Teresa Cochran
Hi, folk,

I've gotten a little confused and seem to be going around in circles with this
process. I have some non-NLS .brf files that I'd like to move from Dropbox over
to iCloud. My iCloud account has much more space. I've got the Downloads app
connected to Dropbox, but can't find an option to move to iCloud. The files
don't seem to open in Voice Dream. Is there a way to move files directly from
an app that will open them into iCloud? Some apps share, but won't open them,
and some apps do the reverse. Access Note will open them, but won't share.

I know this sounds confusing, but that's the circular process I seem to be
following at the moment. LOL

Ideas?

Thanks,
Teresa
