Re: Calling 9 1 1 with SIRI

2015-08-27 Thread Gmail
Hey, that's awesome! I'm glad you can now do this, as I tend to be a panicer in
bad situations, and that's when I would most want a phone with a physical
keypad. This way, though, I don't have to worry about being clumsy; ones
perception of time always stretches in high-stress situations like that. I also
agree with you about the delay being a good feature.

Thanks,
Ari

Calling 9 1 1 with SIRI

2015-08-27 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hello,

A year or two ago there was a discussion about how to best call 9 1 1 in a
true emergency situation. Many on the list expressed concern that their
dialing skills are maybe not so good and they were afraid that in a real
emergency and under a lot of stress they may not be able to quickly bring up
the emergency call screen from the lock screen and dial 9 1 1. At the time
various apps were discussed as literally dozens of them exist to help with
this. Some are very basic and others offer more features like dialing other
emergency contacts or making it easy to send one's GPS coordinates to the 9
1 1 operator.

When this discussion took place, it was not possible to call 9 1 1 by
telling SIRI to "Call 9 1 1". SIRI would inform you at that point that she
couldn't do that. Recently I heard a Podcast where a situation was mentioned
where a young guy got pinned under his car when he was doing repairs and his
jack collapsed. Apparently he had his iPhone in his pocket and was somehow
able to activate SIRI and shout "Call 9 1 1". My first thought was that this
is nonsense since it doesn't work. Then I thought that maybe things changed
so I simply tried it. I told SIRI to "Call 9 1 1" and surprise surprise,
SIRI replied "Calling emergency services in 5 seconds". Of course at that
point I quickly hung up since I didn't really want to call, but it is good
to know that one can now use SIRI in case of emergency to reach a 9 1 1
operator. I think the 5 second delay is a good way to prevent accidental
calls and it allows one to try it out. Just make sure you have a reliable
way to hang up before the call goes through, probably best with the Earpods
where you can simply press the hang up button on the headset remote.

Regards,

Sieghard

I just downloaded the latest version of Tunein radio to my wife's iPhone

Re: Difference Between Using a HotSpot or a Jetpack

2015-08-27 Thread Alex Hall
One uses your phone to simulate a Jetpack, one *is* a Jetpack. Functionally,
they both do the same thing, the only difference is one is on your phone and
the other is a separate, dedicated device. If you use your phone, yes, it takes
data; if you use a Jetpack, it does not. However, most cell plans nowadays give
you a set amount of data to be shared between all your lines, of which your
Jetpack is one. Thus, you can think of all data used by any device on your plan
as counting toward your limit. Of course, this varies from provider to provider
and plan to plan, so check with your particular provider to see how things work
in your situation. The trend, though, is toward shared data among all lines on
a plan.

The Fidelity app is very accessible. However, you may need to have an account
in order to trade.

Re: IPod touch sixth generation battery life

2015-08-27 Thread Richard Turner

the next time I run it way down and fully charge it, I'll try to keep beter
track.
In fact, maybe I will do what I did when I got my 5th gen a few years ago. I'll
set it to shuffle and lock it and let it run and see what happens.
I have almost 4 days worth of music, so that won't be a problem.

RE: crashed iphone?

2015-08-27 Thread Paul Roberts
I had to do this, soon after I got my Iphone 5s.

One afternoon, I noticed I was getting no sound and when I checked with a
neighbor, they too couldn't see anything and so when I called the Apple Store
in Liverpool, they advised me to hold down, both the home and on-off buttons
together, for around 20 seconds

Whilst this didn't work ,I plugged my Iphone in, via the cable and plug which
came with it and after around 10 minutes or so, it started working again.

In more recent months, I have had a similar thing happen, whereby Voiceover
just stopps talking altogether but then it will sometimes come back on of it's
own acord.

All very strange indeed and rather irritating.

Regards

Paul.

This worked. I didn't know about this command.

Thanks, richard. 20 hours or so of playback with the screen locked is kind of
disappointing, especially considering you have a new device with a new battery.
it can only be down from here. I will be curious if others on the list have

I bought it on July 19th.

Have you tried plugging your headphones in to make sure that the speaker is
not muted? I bet that's what you're dealing with.

IPod touch sixth generation battery life

2015-08-27 Thread Mary Otten
For those of you who have purchased the newest iPod touch, I am curious how is
the battery life? I have an iPad mini, which I like quite a bit, but I know
that the touch has a little bit better chip in it. I also have an iPhone 5 S,
which I'm really satisfied with, but I noticed that I'm not getting the battery
life out of it that I used to, not surprising given how much I use it. So I'm
thinking about upgrading my phone and turning the 5S into more or less an iPod
touch. My old for S is about done. I'm curious about the new touches battery
life, however, because it would be far cheaper to get one of those and then it
would be to purchase a new phone. All of this is just in the thinking stage. I
have read articles about the battery life compared to the iPad mini, but of
course, that is with the video fully engaged. And I don't plan to do that with
a new touch. So, any comments would be appreciated.
Mary

RE: using knfb reader version 2 with the Fopydo stand

2015-08-27 Thread Richard Turner
I don’t know, I’ve not tried magazines. I suppose it will depend on how large
the magazine is. You can raise the height of the Fopydo to 14 inches above the
document and still have it be stable. That is just what he has marked so you
can be sure the platform is level. You could possibly get it even higher, but
it might become too top heavy.

Richard, do you know if the stand mode and Fopydo stand will be able to scan
teo pages of a magazine?

Thanks,

Ari

Yes, it works great!

I did about 40 pages of a book just to test out the document stand feature and
while I had to make a couple tries to get it going, once I did it in the order
suggested in the user guide, it worked perfectly.

Is anyone using knfb reader version 2 stand mode with the Fopydo stand. Is it
working?

Yes, I had to use this just once in all the years I’ve had iPhones. I found it

Glad it solved the problem for you.

This worked. I didn't know about this command.

Hi Jeremy,

I would also try plugging the phone using the supplied adapter into a wall
outlet as opposed to the computer. It is possible that the computer is in
generating sufficient power to get the battery back up to where it needs to be
before it will let the iPhone power back on.
