Re: Overcast versus downcast

2015-09-05 Thread Brett
Hi,

I can't remember exactly where I saw it, but I think in the downloads queue you
do have the option to mark the podcast for streaming.

When I have some free time later, I will have a look and try to find the exact
steps to accomplish this.

The audio quality of OverCast makes it the winner for me over both iCatcher and
DownCast.

Cheers,
Brett.

Re: Survey of Member Success with non-Apple Lightning Cables

2015-09-05 Thread 'RobH.' via VIPhone
My mrs has moved over to non-Apple cable as she finds them flimsy and won't to
crack around the plug. I tend to treat them gently
and not had this. But she has found a source of much heavier duty
apple-certified cables which she is have great success with. We
don't use abnormal lengths, those could be an issue in their own right.

My occasional criticism, is that the foreigners tend to have short plug stems,
or bulky packing too close to the end to allow them
to be used through hd protective cases.

Subject: Survey of Member Success with non-Apple Lightning Cables

I'm curious about the success of others on this list with lightning cables
other than those coming from Apple. I only use Apple MFi certified lightning
cables so those are the ones I'm curious about others' experience with.

Here's my story with lightning cables and my iPhone 6. When I purchased my
iPhone 6 last February, it would give me an error message about an
unsupported product whenever I plugged its 3-foot Apple cable into my USB
extension cable connected to my computer in order to charge it. I never got
such an error message when charging my iPhone 5 in the same manner. I
decided to purchase a 10-foot lightning cable to use with my iPhone 6 since
I needed the length as my mid-tower computer sits on the floor. Apple does
not sell a lightning cable of this length and even their 6-foot cable is
expensive so I decided to get an Apple MFi certified one from Amazon. I
found one for about $13 and have never gotten an error message while
charging with it.

However, starting a couple of weeks ago, I noticed that the lightning
connector on this cable does not stay plugged in solidly to my iPhone 6 any
longer. It's almost as if it's become malleable and can't maintain a good
connection even though I plug it in securely. I put a lot of faith in Anker
external batteries and cables so I purchased a 9-foot Anker lightning cable
from Amazon but I'm also getting this connection problem with that one as
well.

I'm curious if anyone else is experiencing this sort of issue with any of
their lightning cables and whether it's specific to particular iDevices or
cables. I really don't want to hear from those who are going to say 'only
use Apple cables" because they don't offer a length I need at a price I
believe is reasonable.

Thanks for any experience you can share with your non-Apple cables.

Hi Alan,
Other than using the lightning I got when I initially got my Idevices,
I've always used the Amazon Basics kind. I think they are made
sturdier. I found that the Apple cables tend to get damaged easier
near the connectors. I've had two Ipods, and an Iphone 5 and now an
Iphone 6.

2015-09-05 Thread Kevin Minor
Hi Alan.

Sounds like the problem may not be with the cables you’re using. Do all the
cables you try have the loose connection problem with your iPhone? If so, it
may be the iPhone itself with the issue.

Just my thoughts.

Re: Survey of Member Success with non-Apple Lightning Cables

2015-09-05 Thread Mária Orovčíková

Hello list,
it is slightly off-topic, but as we are talking about cables, is it
possible to find a realiable seller who sells apple certified cables on
Ebay?
Ebay has become quite popular in Slovakia, because many selers, mostly
those in Asia, offer free shipping. We all know that these products are
not certified and they might damage devices.
I've purchased some items on Ebay in the past, but I avoid buying things
such as charging cables, batteries and adapters.
I am just wondering is there a chance to find an authorised seller who
sells certified apple cables and other accessories on Ebay?

If so, how can I find them and make sure they are authorised sellers?
Does anyone purchase cables on Ebay? Or have you purchased cables on
Ebay in the past?

I would like to hear your opinions and thoughts.
Thank you for your help in advance.
With kind regards
Maria

fact that one Monoprice cable doesn’t work any more after two years of
regular use, all of them seem to plug in securely into both phones. My
wife now has an Otterbox defender case on her iPhone 6 and it’s design
unfortunately only allows the Apple cable to plug in with the case on
since the Apple cable has a super slim connector and both the
Monoprice and Amazon Basics cables are two thick to go through the
small opening in the case. The defender case on my 5S is designed
differently and I can use them. Anyhow, to make a long story short, I
put a USB mal to female extension cable both behind her side of the
bed and in the living room by the sofa and plugged a 3 foot Apple
original cable into each. Both work fine to charge, but the difference
is that we don’t use a PC to charge but in the case of the bedroom an
Anker dual USB wall adapter so we can both charge at the same time and
in the living room just the Apple wall adapter. I only plug into the
laptop when I want to sync since using a wall adapter charges a lot
faster and in any case, my laptop usually sits in my office.

I definitely don’t feel it is necessary to use a cable made by Apple,
as long as it’s got the Made for iPhone or whatever it’s called
certification it will work just fine. One of these days I’ll try to
plug one of the phones into the laptop with the USB extension cable
and Apple cable to see what it says.

Perhaps give this a try to see if it will help you as well.

Thanks. I tried to copy the text of the paragraph long twitterpost, but it
wouldn't copy. Here's the link again. I think that might be best way to know
exactly where the x is. Keith

Hi,

If someone could show me where you find the X, I’ll test it. I use the Twitter
app on my iPhone.

RE: Hi,Re: looking for the simulate this place on blind square

2015-09-05 Thread Richard Turner
I just searched for a place that is about 3 miles northeast of my location.

I chose to simulate that location.

Then I searched for a place I know is about 2 miles west of me.

When I selected track that location, BlindSquare reported that the destination
was 5 miles west, so it was using the simulated location.

Yes, it probably should have said 5 miles southwest, but I know that the angle
wasn’t that great.

So, I backed up and had it create a route to my new destination.

It had the starting address as the simulated location and the destination as
the new place I’d selected.

So, for me, it is working as I would expect.

I’m not sure what would be different.

Richard

After reading this email I went and downloaded the latest version and tried it
again. It is still doing the same thing. It said it was simulating from the
inputted address but the distances and cardinal directions are from where I am
currently located.

I did put my initial question out on the BS list last night, but so far haven’t
gotten any responces. So I put my question out here and sure enough got
responces back fairly quickly.

This list is awesome like that! ☺

I’ll keep playing with it and see if I can think of anything different to try.

Thanks for the help!

Are you using the latest version of Blind Square?

I don’t use that feature a lot but when I last did it seemed to work fine.

You simulate your location, then search for the new place. That works for me.

Thanks to both Richard and Feliciano

. I found it exactly where you said it would be.

I have another question and that is it seems a little confusing because it
seems like it is looking for places around the neighborhood I asked for but is
still orienting from where I am currently at. I think that is what is
happening. I’m not sure about the distances it is saying but for example. It is
telling me about places that I know are west and south west from here and
wouldn’t be to the west or south west from the location I asked it to simulate
so I can’t tell how far they are from the place I want it to simulate from.

The places it is telling me about are south and south east from the place I
want it to simulate from.

Have you experienced this? Is there something else I need to do?

RE: My experience with the NFL app on the Apple TV

2015-09-05 Thread Richard Turner
I requested it. I compared it to the MLB At Bat app concept where you could
choose to just subscribe to radio or subscribe to TV and get the radio as well.

I got the usual generic response that they passed the suggestion on to the
appropriate people.

So, time will tell.

Perhaps more requests would help.

Has anyone asked the NFL if they would consider an audio feed only

I know it’s a big place, but someone there might be willing to consider this. I
wouldn’t know where to start, though. Keith

The live broadcast our radio feeds. The on-demand games or video broadcasts.
Those are without commercials though. That, to me makes the $99 appealing.

It’s 99 dollars a year, and you get the ability to watch games after they’ve
aired live, without any commercials. Plus you can even watch a condensed
version of the game as well.

You also get live audio broadcasts of the games on iOS with GamePass as well,
so it’s an extremely worthwhile purchase in my opinion.

The apple TV has an activation code that it gives you, and you need to go to a
specific website to activate it. The instructions are displayed and read with
VoiceOver though, so it’s not hard to do.
As far as the iOS app goes, you can purchase the subscription through that,
which you can also restore to your apple TV if the code is giving you trouble.

RE: Hi,Re: looking for the simulate this place on blind square

2015-09-05 Thread Richard Turner
Are you using the latest version of Blind Square?

I don’t use that feature a lot but when I last did it seemed to work fine.

You simulate your location, then search for the new place. That works for me.

RE: Hi,Re: looking for the simulate this place on blind square

2015-09-05 Thread Teresa Christian
After reading this email I went and downloaded the latest version and tried it
again. It is still doing the same thing. It said it was simulating from the
inputted address but the distances and cardinal directions are from where I am
currently located.

I did put my initial question out on the BS list last night, but so far haven’t
gotten any responces. So I put my question out here and sure enough got
responces back fairly quickly.

This list is awesome like that! ☺

I’ll keep playing with it and see if I can think of anything different to try.

Thanks for the help!

RE: Survey of Member Success with non-Apple Lightning Cables

2015-09-05 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
If a seller has cables which meet Apple's standards I'm sure they will point
this out in their description of the item as a selling feature and I would just
look for that and simply not buy any cables which don't specifically mention
this.
Last year a woman in China was killed when she picked up her iPhone with wet
hands in the bathroom where it was plugged in with a non certified cable.

Subject: Re: Survey of Member Success with non-Apple Lightning Cables

Hello list,
it is slightly off-topic, but as we are talking about cables, is it
possible to find a realiable seller who sells apple certified cables on
Maria

I know it’s a big place, but someone there might be willing to consider this. I

Hi.

Right now I have the 49er’s game on my Apple TV. I watched the Bengals beat
the Colts earlier. Sadly, the games are video feeds, and the radio broadcasts
aren’t there. We’ll see what happens on September 10.

Just for your information.

It’s 99 dollars a year, and you get the ability to watch games after they’ve
aired live, without any commercials. Plus you can even watch a condensed
version of the game as well.
You also get live audio broadcasts of the games on iOS with GamePass as well,

Hi.

Right now I have the 49er’s game on my Apple TV. I watched the Bengals beat
the Colts earlier. Sadly, the games are video feeds, and the radio broadcasts
aren’t there. We’ll see what happens on September 10.

Just for your information.

RE: Hi,Re: looking for the simulate this place on blind square

2015-09-05 Thread Teresa Christian

Hi All,

I find the Legend quite comfortable on my ear. It goes on my ear first thing
in the morning and only comes off at night or when I shower. I'm using it on
my iPhone 5s. I have also paired it with my iPad air when I wanted to use my
iPad when my wife was sleeping. I have never experienced any of the problems
others have. I got mine on sale for $69.95. It sells for a hundred. If
something ever happened to this one, I wouldn't hesitate to buy another one. I
find the voice to be clean and clear as well as easy to understand.

Yeah I still have the options of audible & am considering taking the free
trial. I don't use voicedream much because I don't like the computerized
voices.

Re: BARD App

2015-09-05 Thread David Justice

I have a couple of VR Streams, but haven't used either since 2013 -- the year
the BARD Mobile app came out. While I don't have an iPhone, I do have an iPod
Touch which has plenty of room for books including those from BARD. I have a
dozen or so books and a few magazines downloaded to the BARD app that I haven't
gotten around to reading yet. So, BARD being down for awhile doesn't affect my
reading of books I've gotten from them, and I don't have to fall back on my VR
Stream. (Smile)

BARD App

2015-09-05 Thread Lynda Ingraham
Please accept my apology if this has been addressed. I recently switched to
a new computer and missed some email messages.

When using the BARD app, I am unable to see the books recently added. Is
anyone else experiencing this problem? Is there a fix for this issue?

Thank you in advance,

Re: My experience with the NFL app on the Apple TV

The live broadcast our radio feeds. The on-demand games or video broadcasts.
Those are without commercials though. That, to me makes the $99 appealing.

For those of you having trouble with the Twitter native app, here is another
very good reason to stop using it and change to some other third party app that
doesn't junk up your timeline.

qr reader for clothing?

2015-09-05 Thread Andrew J. LaPointe
Hi, okay, I am very interested in the qr reader or similar iphone app. I am
looking for labels that I can place on my shirts, dress pants, dungarees ect.
What labels can I purchase that will withstand the washing machine and where
would be the best places to get them. I have an early version of a bar code
scanner from en vision america and works great for canned goods and other
things and does work great for clothing. The problem is that after washing
clothing a few times, it stops identifying. I also have digit eyes but, takes
forever to get something to identify. so, to make a story shorter, If I could
get qr label for clothes, I would be in much better shape. I am sorry for
being so low tecky but, it is what it is for now. I very much any and all
comments. Andy and Shubert

Just so you know, the Audible app is accessible. I'm going to use this so I can
have a book to read on my long weekend.

RE: My experience with the NFL app on the Apple TV

2015-09-05 Thread Kramlinger, Keith G., M.D.
Just to clarify because I’m still not clear on this: Are the live audio feeds
audio feeds of the video broadcast, or audio feeds of radio broadcasts.

I don’t get much out of the audio from video, but enjoy the audio from radio,
as they describe more of the action, rather than saying, “let’s look at that
again Jim.”

Thanks in advance, Keith

It’s 99 dollars a year, and you get the ability to watch games after they’ve
aired live, without any commercials. Plus you can even watch a condensed
version of the game as well.
You also get live audio broadcasts of the games on iOS with GamePass as well,
so it’s an extremely worthwhile purchase in my opinion.

Hi.

Right now I have the 49er’s game on my Apple TV. I watched the Bengals beat
the Colts earlier. Sadly, the games are video feeds, and the radio broadcasts
aren’t there. We’ll see what happens on September 10.

Just for your information.

Re: BARD App

2015-09-05 Thread Alan Paganelli
I'v got both a Victor reader Stream 1 and Stream 2. I also have my iPhone 5s.
I have NLS Talking Books on all my devices. The likelyhood of the BARD site
coming back up before I can read all those books is good. After that, it's
anybodys guess. I was at %80 when the bard site went down. Why couldn't it
have just waited a bit longer? LOL! My wife says the good news is, when that
80 starts counting up, you'll know bard is back. Well that's fine if I'm
willing to sit there and watch it! I'm not though! LOL!

RE: Plantronicks Legend

When using the BARD app, I am unable to see the books recently added. Is anyone
else experiencing this problem? Is there a fix for this issue?

Thank you in advance,

Changing credit card on iTunes

I have to change credit card info with Apple stores as I received a
different card with different account number. I did this last when I had
iTunes 11 and it was simple, however, I am unable to find how to do this on
iTunes 12.2 . and wonder how I can accomplish this. Would prefer to use
computer for these numbers if possible. BT keyboard not connecting to

Thanks in advance.

RE: Survey of Member Success with non-Apple Lightning Cables

2015-09-05 Thread Alan Lemly
Alan,

I had a couple of claims under AppleCare with my iPhone 5 and they never
asked me at the Apple Store if i ever charged my iPhone using a non-Apple
cable. Where did you get your info about using a non-Apple cable voiding
your iPhone warranty? I only use Apple MFi certified cables with my iPhone.

I see that they sell Belkin lightning cables at the online Apple Store. Do
you void your warranty if you purchase one of these and charge your iPhone
with it?

Thanks for any experience you can share with your non-Apple cables.

Re: Does an encrypted backup include downloaded podcasts in Downcast?

2015-09-05 Thread Woody Anna Dresner
Hi,

If I remember right, there's a setting in Downcast that determines whether the
podcasts themselves are backed up to iCloud or just the info about which ones
you have played. I'm pretty sure that whichever choice you make will be
reflected in iTunes backups as well.

Best,
Woody

Honestly, I'd much rather do this with the website. You have familiar browser

With all the talk of NFL, I'm curious about what people are doing this year
for efficiently finding and receiving college games. I could have sworn that
sirius XM had a lot of games in the past, but when I went on to radium and
search through all of the sirius XM stations they have, I did not find any
reference at all to any college football. On TuneIn, search for college
football did turn up some games, and then it degenerated into a mess, with
various conference names showing up, but double tapping on them did
absolutely nothing. So, what are folks doing to see the schedule and click
on desired games in an efficient manner?

Re: Survey of Member Success with non-Apple Lightning Cables

I have used Anker cables for my 5C phone and have had no problems with the
12-inch or 6-foot cables. Only one time did the 3-foot cable simply stop
charging my phone. It connected securely and I didn't get an error message, it
just stopped charging, so I replaced it and have had no problem since then.

Encrypted backups

2015-09-05 Thread Mary Otten
I have never made an encrypted backup of any of my phones. I am considering
doing so now, however, but only if certain things will in fact be backed up. I
have a bunch of music on my phone. If I do encrypted backup, will that music
automatically download to my new phone once I get one? How about my voice dream
books? Kindle books? Another words, what do I gain, other than not having to
reenter my password and Wi-Fi data if I do an encrypted backup? I haven't done
an iTunes back up in ages. I assume there are no encrypted backups on iCloud. I
certainly never seen the option.

RE: Twitter clutters up iOS and Android timelines with 'Who to Follow'

2015-09-05 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Keith,

I just disabled the "Who To Follow" feature and it is not VoiceOver accessible.
That is to say, I had to turn VoiceOver off before I could place focus on the
X mentioned in the article.

I strongly suspect that the inability to place focus on the X, while VoiceOver
is enabled, is due to the same bug that prevents one from placing focus on a
profile entry displayed in a list, discussed in a different thread in this
group.

Is the x in the top right corner accessible, as they describe this as a way to

For those of you having trouble with the Twitter native app, here is another
very good reason to stop using it and change to some other third party app that
doesn't junk up your timeline.

Hi, glad that you found the simulation button. I just simulated my work and i
used the look around feature. The app seems to be working like it should. Are
you trying to simulate a location while you're inside your home? Maybe the
accuracy is low therefore your results aren't I accurate.

College football on youri-device

2015-09-05 Thread Mary Otten
With all the talk of NFL, I'm curious about what people are doing this year for
efficiently finding and receiving college games. I could have sworn that sirius
XM had a lot of games in the past, but when I went on to radium and search
through all of the sirius XM stations they have, I did not find any reference
at all to any college football. On TuneIn, search for college football did turn
up some games, and then it degenerated into a mess, with various conference
names showing up, but double tapping on them did absolutely nothing. So, what
are folks doing to see the schedule and click on desired games in an efficient
manner?

Mary, that's one sport that radium doesn't cover. They do all of the pro games,
but not college. I am using the XM radio service for that is I have a receiver.
Tune in radio is a good app for college football.

Yes, you can always use the physical remote, I also have a bluetooth keyboard
paired ith my Apple TV as well and find it gives you the best experience since
it makes it so much easier to type in search terms or user names/passwords etc.

If I download and set up the remote app on the ITouch can I still use the
regular remote with my Apple TV? I don’t want to set it up unless you can use
both.

Thanks,

RE: Changing credit card on iTunes

2015-09-05 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
You can’t update your payment information at http://AppleID.apple.com. I think
it would make sense if you could, but you can’t. Below is what you can do and
this is copied directly from the website after I logged in:

Edit your Apple ID.

You can make changes to your Apple ID at any time. Change your Apple ID and
password, change your name and email address, or update your contact
information.

Name, ID and Email Addresses

Password and Security

Addresses

Phone Numbers

Language and Contact Preferences

The 5 items above are tabs one can click and then you can see and, if you wish,
modify the information that is there, but nowhere is billing information an
option.

As far as doing this in iTunes 12, it more or less works as before (at least as
far as I remember). Here is what I do, it’s very accessible and relatively easy
to accomplish this:

1. Go to the Store menu, arrow down to “View Account”, you can use Alt+S
for the Store menu and “v” to go to “View Account”.

2. Wait for a bit while the store loads, it may help to refresh the
screen with Jaws Key+Escape.

3. Once the store has loaded, you should see “iTunes Store” at the very
top, arrow down once or twice and it will say “Secure Connection”, then arrow
down again and you find a heading level 1 called “Account Information”, right
underneath is a heading level 2 “Apple Id Summary”. Here you see your Apple Id
email, there is an edit link for that and then information as to whether you
have family sharing enabled. After that comes your payment information, your
credit card is listed with the last 4 numbers showing and once again this is
following by an edit link.

4. Activate the link, wait a moment and use Jaws Key+Escape to refresh
the screen, then go to the very top with Control+Home and now use “h” or “1” to
jump to the first heading. You can of course also down arrow, but the heading
will say “Edit Payment Information”. For me it then says the following:

All family members share the payment method shown below. Codes you redeem will
be applied only to your individual account.

Not sure if this is displayed if family sharing is not enabled, but next comes
“Please select a payment method” which is followed by 4 radio buttons which
indicate which card you want to use:

Visa

Mastercard

American Express

None

The ‘None” option is something I hadn’t noticed before, I guess you can check
it if you don’t want to use a credit card and instead rely on iTunes gift cards
for purchases. I believe in the States there might be a Paypal option, but I’m
in Canada and what I listed above is all we get here.

5. Next is an edit field again showing the last 4 digits of your current
card. Note that even though this is a web page, Jaws will not automatically go
into forms mode and you have to press enter on this field if you want to enter
a new card number. The same applies for the combo boxes for selecting your
card’s expiry month and year, press enter first or Alt+Down Arrow to open the
combo boxes, make your selection and then use Alt+Up arrow to select it and
close the combo box. Alternatively, once you pressed enter to get into the edit
field for the credit card number, you can tab into the month combo box, then
tab again into the year combo box and lastly tab a last time to get into the
security code (CVV) edit field where you enter your card’s 3-digit security
code.

6. When you have updated the information, make sure you go to the “Done”
button a bit further down and activate it.

This all is quite accessible and easily accomplished with Jaws and, I assume,
with other screenreaders as well and I find it easier then to try and find an
Apple website where you can do this. If that is what you want to do, you can go
to the following website and use the link I mentioned because, as I said above,
you can’t do it at the AppleId.Apple.com website:

http://www.apple.com/shop/account/home

Find the link called “Change your default shipping or billing info
 ”, then sign in with
your Apple Id and password and go from there.

Best regards,

Sieghard

Honestly, I'd much rather do this with the website. You have familiar browser
commands, rather than fighting with iTunes. Just visit
http://appleid.apple.com, sign in, go to Payment Method (the link might be
called something slightly different), and make any updates you need to.

Hi All,

I find the Legend quite comfortable on my ear. It goes on my ear first
thing in the morning and only comes off at night or when I shower. I'm
using it on my iPhone 5s. I have also paired it with my iPad air when I
wanted to use my iPad when my wife was sleeping. I have never experienced
any of the problems others have. I got mine on sale for $69.95. It sells
for a hundred. If something ever happened to this one, I wouldn't hesitate
to buy another one. I find the voice to be clean and clear as well as easy
to understand.

Didn't care for it too much. I ended up returning it and getting the Edge

The thing is big to the point that you feel like you've got a mini
transformer plastered on the side of your face. There was sound distortion
at higher levels. I found the magnetic charging mechanism to be gimmicky
at best and the fact that they give you such a short cable made charging a
hassle. I guess I wasn't the only one who thought the magnetic charging
thing was silly as Plantronics went right back to the traditional micro
USB connector with the Edge.
Even with the Edge, I turned off some of the features like hands free
answering, spoken caller ID and so on as I found them either to be
unreliable or unnecessary
I'm sure there are others who like it, but I was really unimpressed with
it.

Hi,

I have heard quite a bit of good reviews on this Bluetooth ear piece so I
got me one. Did I make a good choice? DDo you like it, and if not, why?
