RE: Whatsapp and voiceover

2016-03-12 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I am not sure I understand the problem probably mostly because as far as I am
concerned there is no problem. As others have also confirmed this it is my
guess that it is a user issue rather than a Whats App issue.

Hello Sieghard,

Thank you for your response. My friends installed the new update of
whatsapp on their iPhones. They are complaining of having difficulty finding
messages. Messages are slipping too fast or getting stuck. What do you think
they should do to make the problem known to APPLE. I am sure they at APPLE
have programmers who take care of the voiceover and its issues.

No, Doug Lee is a scrit writer who writes scripts for Jaws, there is no
provision for scripts in Voiceover.

What exactly is the problem with Whats App, I recently used it and it seems to
work just fine and I didn’t encounter any accessibility issues.

Hello listers,

I hope everybody is doing well. I have a question for you please. Is
there a specialist who takes care of voiceover and the applications that are
used by iPhone such as whatsapp? Every time we install an update in whatsapp,
we have a difficulty with voiceover. For example, I know there is Doug Lee for
skype and JAWS. Is there someone similar for whatsapp and voiceover?

Thanks for any answer

Yes, it ends in html because is is a page with the link to the mp3 file, but
here is a direct link to the file:
www.turner42.com/VDR4March12.mp3

If you are using Windows, you probably have to choose whether to open or save
the file.

I didn't test and he didn't mention any yet.

I left my display at work, but I'll try to test this week.

RE: Voice Dream Reader 4.0, an early overview

2016-03-12 Thread Richard Turner
I'm not really sure if it does back up the voices.
When the app is released, I'll install it on my Touch and make sure everything
is there and it has synced with iCloud.
Then, I'll download it fresh from the App store on my iPhone and turn on the
sync and see what happens.
My guess is like yours, it probably won't back up the voices, but I'll know if
I have to install the voices again.

I'm glad folks are finding my overview helpful.

 Hi Richard,
Thanks for that nice overview. I am definitely looking forward to iCloud sink.
Does it also back up the voices? I kind of doubt it, since you didn't mention
it. But I'm just curious, given all the trouble I had when I upgraded my iPhone
and permanently lost access to ivona. I don't want that to happen again the

Aren't the movies from Blind Mice ripped into an MP3 format? Will you
get surround sound from these files? I wouldn't think so, but I don't

they should give me some of the surround sound experience with the

listen to music on the system. I believe I will get plenty of

Also, if you have a lot of CD’s I would suggest you rip them in a
lossless format such as Apple Lossless or FLAC so you can access all
your music with Sonos. Ideally I think any Sonos owner should use a
network attached hard drive which is always available to play music, if
you have it on your computer it has to be on for Sonos to access it.

If you don’t have many CD’s you definitely would want to subscribe to a
music service like Apple Music, Deezer or Spotify. I like Deezer in that
Sonos users can get the Deezer Elite service with access to music in
lossless format (Tidal also offers this), but on the other hand I would
venture that it takes a really discerning ear to notice the difference
especially if all you have are Play 1, 3 and 5 players. Even with the
new Play 5 which is supposed to sound very good you probably have a hard
time hearing the difference. Where it may make sense is if you use a
Sonos Connect with an existing high-end system and by high-end I mean
something where you spent $10,000 and above for your amplifier and
speakers/Sub.

As most of us here are fairly heavily invested in Apple products, Apple
Music really does make the most sense, they have a ton of music and on
iOS devices and the new Apple TV being able to use SIRI to request
certain music to play is simply a nice experience. The Apple Music
experience on Sonos is also very good.

Best regards,

Sieghard

Hi,

Ah and that my friend you can have with a Play:5 first or 2nd
generation. As I said it does have an auxiliary input jack so have
patch cord and your wish is their command. You merely select line in
source in the app and you can start it playing. All you need to do is
plug it into one speaker and away you go. If it’s part of a stereo pair
grouping the audio will then come out of both speakers seamlessly.

I hope that helps.

Just one thing I’d like to add and that is that there is a tuning option
to optimize the Play 5 to a particular room. Sonos calls this “TruePlay”
but if you want to do this you will need sighted help, it is not
accessible if Voiceover is running.

Also, FYI, while the new Play 5 has no longer a headphone jack, it is
supposed to sound much better than the older ones.

Re: Voice Dream Reader 4.0, an early overview

2016-03-12 Thread Mary Otten
 Hi Richard,
Thanks for that nice overview. I am definitely looking forward to iCloud sink.
Does it also back up the voices? I kind of doubt it, since you didn't mention
it. But I'm just curious, given all the trouble I had when I upgraded my iPhone
and permanently lost access to ivona. I don't want that to happen again the
next time I have to get a new I device, such as replacing my iPad mini someday.
Mary
PS great music.

 Hi Eva,

Well what's happening here is that the thread originally was about
Sonos. Your messages, even the ones now are appearing in that thread.
I know this is sometimes tricky and it's took me a while to understand
this myself. Basically, I have my messages threaded. What happens is
that all the messages come up with one subject hopefully. If I don't
wish to read it, I delete it. When you out your message and it became
part of this thread, I deleted the thread because I wasn't interested
in reading about this application. I have a sense that you don't read
your messages. Therefore, you may not know that this is part of the

messages are part of this thread, so I will just delete them and keep
 the Sonos messages. Thanks.

Aren't the movies from Blind Mice ripped into an MP3 format? Will you
get surround sound from these files? I wouldn't think so, but I don't
know, so I'm curious.

they should give me some of the surround sound experience with the

listen to music on the system. I believe I will get plenty of entertainment.

Sonos calls this “TruePlay”

accessible if Voiceover is running.

Also, FYI, while the new Play 5 has no longer a headphone jack, it is

Hijacking threads [was "Re: Whatsapp and voiceover"]

Yes, this is called hijacking a thread. Threaded mail clients, such as
the stock email client on the iPhone, will keep messsages in the same

Hi Eva,

Well what's happening here is that the thread originally was about
Sonos. Your messages, even the ones now are appearing in that thread. I
know this is sometimes tricky and it's took me a while to understand
this myself. Basically, I have my messages threaded. What happens is
that all the messages come up with one subject hopefully. If I don't
wish to read it, I delete it. When you out your message and it became
part of this thread, I deleted the thread because I wasn't interested in
reading about this application. I have a sense that you don't read your
messages. Therefore, you may not know that this is part of the subject
line. Not sure exactly how that works. Anyway, I know you didn't do this
intentionally. And I know now that the WhatsApp messages are part of
this thread, so I will just delete them and keep the Sonos messages. Thanks.

Hi,

He's talking about the latest update to the MLB app that was released for the
4th generation Apple TV on March 9th.
He's correct, though, the newest version is a complete redesigned app, which
has a somewhat inaccessible schedule screen. Hopefully they'll fix it in an

Larry, when I access the AppleTV MLB package, I see today's games and choose
that. And then see the schedule. If I choose game day audio, I also see today's
games. Is that what you're looking for are you are you looking for individual
team schedules?

Re: Whatsapp and voiceover

2016-03-12 Thread Les Kriegler
Hi Eva,

Well what's happening here is that the thread originally was about Sonos. Your
messages, even the ones now are appearing in that thread. I know this is
sometimes tricky and it's took me a while to understand this myself. Basically,
I have my messages threaded. What happens is that all the messages come up with
one subject hopefully. If I don't wish to read it, I delete it. When you out
your message and it became part of this thread, I deleted the thread because I
wasn't interested in reading about this application. I have a sense that you
don't read your messages. Therefore, you may not know that this is part of the
subject line. Not sure exactly how that works. Anyway, I know you didn't do
this intentionally. And I know now that the WhatsApp messages are part of this
thread, so I will just delete them and keep the Sonos messages. Thanks.

Re: Whatsapp and voiceover

2016-03-12 Thread Eva Abbas

Thanks for any answer

apple tv 4 and mlb

2016-03-12 Thread Larry McCreary
Hello,
With the newest update to the mlb app on apple tv the schedule is not
accessible. Instead of team names there are team logos. I am using the apple
4th generation. If someone can help with this problem I would appreciate it
much. The app before the update had the team names.

RE: Setting up fopydo and bookreading aid?

2016-03-12 Thread Richard Turner
Right, but if you didn't specifically ask for the Book Rading Aid without the
Stand, the another stand is attached to the Book Reading Aid.
Did you pay $35 plus shipping for the Aid? If so, you probably have a second
stand.
The book Reading aid has a longer base than the Stand with the two foam pads
connected to it.
So, the Aid has its own base that serves as the platform for the book and is
what keeps the foam pads connected with the rods that go through the base so
you can adjust the width of the space between the pads.

HTH,
Richard

Re: Sonos

2016-03-12 Thread Marie
I long ago ripped all my CDs and have purchased a lot of digital music from
Rhapsody and later from Apple. I seldom watch TV because I was sick of their
commercials and paying too much for too little. I listen to many audios tracks
of descriptive movies from the Blind Mice site and they should give me some of
the surround sound experience with the Sonos. I also have an Apple TV and use
Netflix. But I will primarily listen to music on the system. I believe I will
get plenty of entertainment.

Also, if you have a lot of CD’s I would suggest you rip them in a lossless
format such as Apple Lossless or FLAC so you can access all your music with
Sonos. Ideally I think any Sonos owner should use a network attached hard drive
which is always available to play music, if you have it on your computer it has
to be on for Sonos to access it.

If you don’t have many CD’s you definitely would want to subscribe to a music
service like Apple Music, Deezer or Spotify. I like Deezer in that Sonos users
can get the Deezer Elite service with access to music in lossless format (Tidal
also offers this), but on the other hand I would venture that it takes a really
discerning ear to notice the difference especially if all you have are Play 1,
3 and 5 players. Even with the new Play 5 which is supposed to sound very good
you probably have a hard time hearing the difference. Where it may make sense
is if you use a Sonos Connect with an existing high-end system and by high-end
I mean something where you spent $10,000 and above for your amplifier and
speakers/Sub.

As most of us here are fairly heavily invested in Apple products, Apple Music
really does make the most sense, they have a ton of music and on iOS devices
and the new Apple TV being able to use SIRI to request certain music to play is
simply a nice experience. The Apple Music experience on Sonos is also very good.

Best regards,

Sieghard

Okay guys, I ordered a Play 5 last night so will be anxiously awaiting

eventually add 4 to 6 Play 1 speakers to the area which should give me
wonderful sound. Then I can begin adding my bedroom and office so I will live

Hi,

Ah and that my friend you can have with a Play:5 first or 2nd generation. As I
said it does have an auxiliary input jack so have patch cord and your wish is
their command. You merely select line in source in the app and you can start
it playing. All you need to do is plug it into one speaker and away you go. If
it’s part of a stereo pair grouping the audio will then come out of both
speakers seamlessly.

I hope that helps.

Just one thing I’d like to add and that is that there is a tuning option to
optimize the Play 5 to a particular room. Sonos calls this “TruePlay” but if
you want to do this you will need sighted help, it is not accessible if
Voiceover is running.

Also, FYI, while the new Play 5 has no longer a headphone jack, it is supposed
to sound much better than the older ones.

Hi,

Yes and yes. Set up is a breeze and poses no problems for blind or visually
impaired users no matter which model you get in my experience. Once your
library is indexed by the sonos system then you could play anything you might
have in terms of sound files from your computer.

the only difference between first and 2nd generation play:5 for instance is the
location of the button you press to initiate its detection by the system. In
first gen it’s on top of the unit whereas in the newer 2nd generation it’s on
the back of the unit. It’s nearly flush with the back of the unit but still
detectable by touch once you know to look for it. I don’t think

Hi Marie,

My advice would be to put 2 Play 1 speakers into the kitchen area and to mount
them so they are best placed for when you are sitting at the kitchen table or
working in the kitchen.

For the great room I would eventually use a set of Play 5 with a Sonos Sub and
then again in the bedroom, depending on its size, either a set of Play 1 or
Play 3 and of course you will probably want to put a Play 1 into the bathroom
if possible.

The only modification I would consider would be if you do regularly watch TV
and want a surround setup. Assuming the TV is in the great room, I would put a
Playbar with Sub there and given the size of the room, use two Play 3 players
wall-mounted behind and to the side of the couch as rear surrounds.

Regards,

Sieghard

have in terms of sound files from your computer.

the only difference between first and 2nd generation play:5 for instance is the
location of the button you press to initiate its detection by the system. In
first gen it’s on top of the unit whereas in the newer 2nd generation it’s on
the back of the unit. It’s nearly flush with the back of the unit but still
detectable by touch once you know to look for it. I don’t think you’d have any

2016-03-12 Thread Sieghard Weitzel

Sieghard

Hi, Everyone.
I was using the VIA app and was looking for an app for kitchen
organization. The Home Food Storage app was listed, and the most
recent update to that app os something like October or November 2015.
I've just begun to play with the app, and it looks really promising.
Is anyone on list using this? I'd love some clues about how to start
using it for organization, especially when it comes to being able to
scan for bar codes and incorporate the info in to the profile--for
lack of a better word--the app builds for the user as s/he inputs the
necessary data re storage goals and where things actually are stored.

Thanks,
Dani

2016-03-12 Thread Richard Turner
It sounds like you need sighted help. Maybe someone who could watch the video?

A rectangle, by definition, has two short sides and two long sides.

If you got the Book Reading Aid, the Stand came with it most likely and it is
stuck to the stand with the microsuction tape but if you pull up on it it will
separate but it takes a bit of force. Of course, you want to make sure you are
pulling on the right item, hence, maybe needing someone sighted to assist.

Or, do you use Be My Eyes or one of those that can get sighted help via the
iPhone?

Or, have a sighted friend who has an iPhone or Skype that you can connect to?

I’m totally blind, so I can’t be of much more help.

Fopydo Stand instructions and video can be found at:

http://fopydo.com/scanningstandfortheblind

As you remove a folded stand from the zip-lock bag hold it in your hands by
shorter edges. The side with wires should be in your left hand and the wires
should be facing down. Reach with your right hand thumb towards the top center
of the stand and press the tab in the center to unlock. Please note that when
you fold the stand for storage or transport you can push the tab back to lock
it in a folded form.

Now open the top part of the stand - it unfolds into one layer of corrugated
plastic. Hold the short edge with wires in your left hand and the short edge
with a tab in the center in your right hand. With your right hand bend the
right part of the stand at the crease placed around six inches from the right
short edge.

Now hold the folded crease in your right hand. In other words you should hold a
crease with two layers of corrugated plastic in your right hand and the short
edge with wires in a single layer of corrugated plastic in your left hand.
Start pushing the crease forward with your right hand forming a triangular
shelf till the tab reaches the cut-out for locking the shelf. The center tab
snaps into the cut-out and forms the shelf for your mobile device.

Now turn the stand so that the shelf is at the top and the wires are at the
bottom. Turn the wires by 90 degrees in the same direction as the top shelf -
the wires form the base of the stand. Press the wires all the way into the
flutes of corrugated plastic. Place the stand on a flat surface.

The top shelf of the assembled stand is 10.5 inches from the surface. This is a
proper distance to scan a letter or A4 size document using an iPhone 6 or an
iPhone 5 - so if this is your goal you do not need to extend L-shaped wires. If
you are using an iPhone 4s, or if you want to scan larger documents you need to
extend the wires from the vertical back side of the stand. The vertical back
side of the stand contains three round cut-outs half inch in diameter near the
top shelf along right and left edges. These cut-outs are 1 inch apart and wires
run near the middle of the cut-outs. In order to read a letter size document
with an iPhone 4s extend the wires by 1 inch on both sides - till you feel the
wire tips in the middle of the first pair of cut-outs (right and left) placed
one inch below the top shelf. You may extend the wires further the second or
the third cut-out in order to read larger size documents.

Now place your stand on a stable flat surface. Place your mobile device on the
top shelf of the stand. The long edge of the mobile device should be placed
along the flutes of corrugated plastic and the camera should be about half inch
in front of the half circle guide on the edge of the top shelf. There are
several rectangular cut-outs along the edges of the top shelf intended to help
in placing your mobile device straight. In addition, there is a section of
non-slip micro suction tape on the top shelf to secure your mobile device in
place.

Place your document between the wires, a shorter edge of the document should be
next to the vertical back side of the stand. Now the camera that is placed half
an inch in front of the half circle guide points to the middle of the letter or
A4 size document.

We hope that the stand will serve you well that it will make it easy for you to
read documents.

Re: Trekker Breeze units

2016-03-12 Thread Scott Berry
Hello there,

Actually I think it’s a job for an individual programmer to do. I’ll begin the
process of putting this together. I’ll create the program myself.
I can then submit that to Humanware for a review and maybe they will put it on
their cd for Maps.

Airplaying music from my PC to my Apple TV 4

2016-03-12 Thread Tom Rash
Since I got my Apple TV 4, and am streaming my music from my PC via wireless
transmission, I'm getting pauses in my music. It sounds like it could be
buggering. I get a 1 to 3 second pause about every 3 songs or so. Is there
a way to test if it's my hard drive, my wireless transmission from my PC, or
if it is in fact the Apple TV 4? I never had this problem when using the
Apple TV 3. Thanks for any suggestions.

Trekker Breeze units

2016-03-12 Thread Scott Berry
Hello there everyone,

I am curious how many people have a Trekker Breeze GPS? The reason I am asking
is I think it’s about time for us to have a Mac application which can copy
maps, copy route data, update the device if there is new updates. I happen to
have one. I am also looking at doing the same thing for the Victor Stream
reader.

Re: sound hound vs shazam?

2016-03-12 Thread Arnold Schmidt
Yes, it can identify a song under those circumstances. But start listening
to something over the small speaker in your phone, and ask Siri to identify
it. Siri uses the speaker in the phone as a microphone to listen to
whatever is playing. When you ask Siri to identify something, Siri is in
control of what is happening on the phone at the moment, and Siri won't let
the phone go back to the playing song so that Siri can hear it. However,
either Sound Hound or Shazam can identify it while it is playing over that
speaker, I do not know how, but it can. No, I do not do a lot of serious
music listening over that speaker, but if I am listening over my headphones
and want to know what something is, I need to play it over that speaker so
Sound Hound or Shazam can hear it.

Hi Arnold,

What exactly do you mean by "it is unable to do it if I am listening via my
phone's speaker"?
I just played Maggie May by Rod Stewart on my Sonos system in the bedroom. I
asked SIRI "What song is this", SIRI said "OK, let me listen" and it made
the beeps again when it's listening and after about 3 or 4 seconds it said
"I'm pretty sure this is Maggie May by Rod Stewart, but please don't ask me
to sing it".

Now, there is some inconsistency here because a while back I asked SIRI what
song was playing and it would persistently tell me the song that was queued
up to play on my iPhone instead of going into listening mode so it could
listen to music externally.
Today when I just did this I started playing Hotel California on my iPhone
and then I asked SIRI again and each time no matter how I asked SIRI would
start listening wanting to tell me what song it heard instead of telling me
what was currently playing on my phone. I even asked "What song is currently
playing on my iPhone" and all to no avail.
I find SIRI does really well identifying songs that are playing externally,
but I should still be able to ask SIRI what is playing on my phone, too.
This is just one more example showing on the one hand how smart SIRI can be
but also how dum and limited it ccan be.

Regards,
Sieghard

And, I have observed it work the other way, too. Unfortunately though,
there have been more times when neither of them knew what the song was.
When this happened, the skeptic in me wondered if they both used the same
database? I hope not.] And if that be true, I am sure neither would admit
it.

One more reason to have at least one of these apps on your phone: When I
ask Siri to identify a song, it is unable to do it if I am listening via my
phone's speaker. Both the apps can identify a song when it is playing
through the phone's speaker.

Hi,

There have been times when Shazam didn't identify something and Sound
Hound did, so I would recommend having Sound Hound as a backup.

Best,
Anna
