The subscribe page isn't very accessible.
They have written to Mark and Cara with no response.

Wondering where things can go from here?

Re: grocery ap

I could do it that way, but writing it in braille works better for me. It
usually is an edited version of the original list, things I actually am

So why not email yourself the grocery list to save on your iPhone then

These two solutions are really low tech, so be forewarned. When I go over
the weekly adds using my iPhone, I sometimes open the notes app and either
dictate the items into it, or use MBraille to write them. Or, even lower
tech, I dictate them to my Victor Reader Stream. Lowest tech, I then write
the list in braille to take to the store. It use to be, probably is still,
that one can keep the list on the store's web site, then send it to oneself
via email. I tried this for a while, but after having it go wrong on two
consecutive occasions a few years ago, ending up with a blank grocery list,
I got disgusted and started doing it as I outlined above, and have never
gone back.

Yes I can go from one device to the other with a touch of a button. On the
Logitech, there are three dedicat3ed B;luetooth buttons for that, and on the
foldable keyboard, there are two.

RE: Nest thermostat

That is what I did when we left our condo on Sunday but I just went into it

Yes, I will give you an example of how it works. My nest is called Albany home.
So I identify button that says Albany home and do a one finger double tap. At
that point, I have a choice of home or away. If I want to change it to away, I
do a one finger double tap on the way in as a set.

OK, are you saying that if you are on home and want to switch to away, you can

I really don’t care about the indoor temp. We have a condo at the coast and we
like to turn the temp up when we leave and from home we like to make it cooler
for our arrival. My husband has tried to find a work around but no success.

Kathy, I recently acquired a nest thermostat. I am using the app and can change
from home to a mode without difficulty. It works fine with voiceover. There are
a couple of other issues it don't work as well, such as not being able to
determine the inside temperature, and you really can't determine or set up a
schedule. However, the nest learns your habits and this doesn't send me a major
drawback. Anyway, if I can help further, just ask.

Looking for a keyboard that can pair to multiple devices

2016-06-28 Thread Wayne Merritt
Greetings all. I have been meaning to post about this for awhile. I
went to Best Buy not long ago and saw the Logitech K480 Bluetooth
wireless keyboard, which can pair to 3 devices at once, can work with
iPhone and Apple TV, and was $49. The one downside for me was that the
keyboard was very much a full size keyboard, bigger than the desktop
keyboard I have at work. There was an on/off switch, but the size of
the keyboard was an issue. It would be good to have a keyboard that
can pair to 3 or 4 devices (one of them being an Apple TV), can work
with my iPhone, is a bit smaller than that full size Logitech
keyboard, and somewhat affordable. It seems like multi-pairing
keyboards and keyboards in general run around $70 to $100. AT Guys
just started selling the Matias (pronounced Ma ty us) keyboard which
meets most of these requirements, except the size, for $99. That one
is tempting but a keyboard closer to the $49 mark would be awesome.
Any ideas? I'm using an iPhone 6S with iOS 9.3.2 and an Apple TV 4th
generation running whatever the latest TVOS is. I would love to find
something small enough to be portable, so that I could use the
keyboard with my phone to take notes.

Thanks,
Wayne

RE: Netflix Audio Description

2016-06-28 Thread Kramlinger, Keith G., M.D.
Hi,

At one point some time back, someone on this list mentioned that doing a search
within the app or on the website with the terms "audio description" would pull
up a good listing of AD content, but not sure if it was an exhaustive list.

Might be worth a try.

If you do, please let us know how it goes.

Monica, you could also turn on airplane mode and then enable wifi.
This way, you would still be connected to wifi but any calls would not
come through. Notifications would still come through, so perhaps it is
6 of one, and half dozen of the other.

Re: How do you update your status in FaceBook?

2016-06-28 Thread Wayne Merritt
You can also find the status update area by touching in the middle or
upper middle part of the screen of the FB app. Sometimes this takes me
straight into an edit box where I can start writing, and sometimes it
takes me to a status update edit box where I have to double tap to
start writing. It does work fairly consistently for me.

Re: Question About the NPR News App

2016-06-28 Thread Wayne Merritt
One possible idea, though it doesn't relate to the NPR News app, is to
subscribe to the various NPR programs via their podcasts. Many NPR
shows have dedicated podcasts which are updated each time a new show
is released/broadcasted. I don't know if this would allow you to
listen to whole segments of All Things Considered, or perhaps the
whole show, but it might work for your purposes.

Good luck,
Wayne

Question About the NPR News App

2016-06-28 Thread Evan Reese
I really like the NPR News app because it lets me listen to parts of my
favorite programs when I want to hear them and if I can’t listen when they’re
actually on the air.
I’m wondering though if there’s any way to make it go back further. As an
example, for the program All Things Considered, as of this writing, Tuesday
afternoon in the Eastern U.S., it only goes back to Sunday, and I don’t even
think it shows all the segments of the program on Sunday. If it’s on the screen
somewhere, I can’t find it. But even while I’ve had this iPad Mini 4 for about
two months, I still don’t think I’m an expert navigator of the touch screen or
my Bluetooth keyboard; so I may be missing it.
I’d like to go back a bit further if possible. At least a couple of days. Does
anyone know if there’s a way to make it roll back further so I can listen to
older segments of programs than just from the last two days?
Thanks very much.

Yes, I will give you an example of how it works. My nest is called Albany home.
So I identify button that says Albany home and do a one finger double tap. At
that point, I have a choice of home or away. If I want to change it to away, I
do a one finger double tap on the way in as a set.

2016-06-28 Thread Kathy Brack
OK, are you saying that if you are on home and want to switch to away, you can
do this. Every time I tap on home it does nothing, with VO off it will change.

Hello All,

I am delighted to recommend the CBS Local app to you as it is VoiceOver
accessible. The only bug I have found is that VoiceOver reads one of the
two menu buttons, located in the upper right corner of the display, as,
"headphones, button". So, when you hear VoiceOver say, "headphones,
button," go ahead and activate this button in order to display the various
affiliate live streaming options in your area. The primary menu button,
located in the upper left corner of the display, is labeled correctly.

The primary purpose of this app is to keep you up-to-date via the local

Be aware that you may change the local area at any time.

This is a free app, the description and link to which I will paste in

RE: Volume of audio description on Apple TV

2016-06-28 Thread Rick Alfaro
I've seen this as well on some but not all movies with AD. The one thing that
does work for me is to access the audio tab while the movie is paused and check
the box there that says something to the affect of reduce loud sounds.
Normally, this is set to full dynamic range which is usually preferred but for
this situation, it works because it behaves like a midnight mode and makes the
audio all at the same level.

Best regards,

Rick Alfaro

Nest thermostat

2016-06-28 Thread Kathy Brack
I believe in the past this was accessible but planning on having to use it
next weekend I learned that I cannot switch from home to away or the other
way around. We turned VO off and it worked but this doesn't help me. I
e-mailed Nest and they said it was an apple problem not theirs. "Sigh", Any
suggestions on getting a quick solution to this?

RE: Netflix Audio Description

2016-06-28 Thread Tom Rash
Turning on audio description in settings on an Apple device has nothing to
do with Netflix audio description. That setting is for movies on iTunes.
The netflix audio description setting has to be turned on while you are in
Netflix and pause the movie and set it up through there.

Brandon,
I just checked out Psych, and the first season doesn't have audio
description, but season 8 episode 1 does.
So, somewhere along the way they added it.
Also, in your settings on your device, make sure to go to settings, general,
accessibility and almost at the end of that page of settings, in the Media,
section, make sure Audio Description is turned on.
That should fix it so if a show has audio description, it will play
automatically.

Richard

RE: Small update on the BotVac app accessibility.

2016-06-28 Thread Jeremy Gilley
My bot vac runs under my desk.
I have wires running aginst the wall, multiple wires actually. It has not
sucked them up or unplugged them at all.
Some thick, some thin from speaker wires.

I wonder how it will do under the computer desks or tables where they may be
cords? Will it suck up the cords, I would not want it to damage the cords.
What about going around say socks left on the floor in the bedroom?

Thanks.

Hi Zoe,

Glad you like the sound of the BotVac, I certainly still like mine! I
shall have a shot at answering your questions.

Different types of flooring: I have wood, tile, Laminate and carpeting. I
can't say that the Bot performs differently from floor to floor, but it just
works! There are 2 types of brushes, which are very easy to change, One is
like a squeegee, called the spiral blade brush, which, I find, is especially
good for hard floors, but does a good job on carpets too! However, the other
brush, the one which comes installed, is a mixture of squeegee blade and
bristles. I think that this latter brush might be best for a deeper carpet
brushing. I plan to use that one, say, once a week and see how that does.

You were wondering about thresholds, I have various types of these, some
are just a small step of about half an inch, while others are real
thresholds, I.E., a sort of wooden strip, 5 inches across, which has a small
up-step of a quarter of an inch, then a slope up and then down and a little
fall-off, the Vac seems to take a run at it and clambers over!! I was
standing very still, and the Bot climbed onto my foot, and then up my ankle!
I'd say he got to about a 45 degree tip before I lost my nerve and ran off!
It is like being harrassed by a big beetle! Getting onto rugs etc is no
problem at all! One of the few times I got a message saying he was stuck, I
found him rocking on top of the dog's rubber bone! So, I don't see a problem
with your doorways. Mind you, When you get your Bot, you should have a
little time to play with him and decide if it will work for you.

Falling down stairs? This morning, I did my upstairs. When I did it
first time, I was concerned lest he fall down. I already knew he had "cliff
detection" (which I wish I had!!) but I wanted to be sure. This time I was
busy elsewhere, so left him to it, with no problems. The really cool thing,
I find, is that if you put him, say, upstairs, where there is no dock to go
home to, he will go back, to the exact spot where you started him off. This
means, you don't have to worry about finding him again! If you get into a
habit of placing him in the same spot, you will always know where he is when
he is quiet and finished.

As far as accessibility goes, the app is well done and totally
accessible, apart from the battery status, which VO can't recognise for some
reason. Neither can the KNFB Reader app, as it is just a icon whith some
indicator bars. I am still working on a work around for this!! You do get a
few of the error messages, but not all. However, as Jeramy discovered, there
is a work around for this which, in my opinion, is acceptable. Today, my
internet went off and will probably, stay off until my partner gets back,
so, firstly, I found the app could not find the Bot. So, I just used the
Home button and it did its job for me. At one point, it stopped and "bling
blonged" at me. I couldn't guess what was wrong! I felt sure I had emptied
the bin, the brushes felt OK and the battery should have been fine. So, with
no app and no internet, I had to get the KNFB Reader up (thank goodness it
doesn't need the net to work!) took a shot of the screen on the Vac and
managed to read, not perfectly, but well enough, that the bin needed
emptying. I did this, though there wasn't anything in it! Maybe the act of
carrying it upstairs sprinkled some loose dust on its sensors or something,
but it then worked perfectly. So, if push comes to shove, An OCR app may do.
I couldn't use BE My Eyes, because of the no net situation.

Sorry for such a long reply, please ask anything you like about this, my
new Pal!

Sandy.
PS If anyone, with no sight at all and one of these Vacs can tell me how
they manage to dock it, manually, and be sure it is in the correct position,
I would love to know how you do it!

iPhone SE on Boost Mobile

2016-06-28 Thread Gordon
So I just ran across this and thought I would let folks know out here in
case someone might be interested. Boost is selling the iPhone SE Space
Grey 16 gig for $299. If you live in an area where they have good
coverage and have a budget to work with, this is a pretty nice price for
this phone. I remember back in the day when you couldn't buy a new
iPhone for less than $600.
