No, the one in the Speak To Me catalog does not work with the iPhone. It is a
stand alone thermometer.

Hi Listers,

I just wanted to briefly post about a new gadget I purchased from the Apple
Store while I was here in Calgary. The item is the Withings Thermo Smart
Thermometer meant to measure body temperature. It is rather on the expensive
side at $109 Canadian (it is $99 US on the Withings website and from what I saw
it’s the same on Amazon). Of course this actually means we are getting a good
deal here in Canada since $99 US at the current exchange rate is about $135
Canadian.
Anyhow, it does seem to be a very nice device, the app is mostly accessible
although a few times during the setup I had to find a “Next” button by touch
since I couldn’t swipe to it and it can be integrated with the Health app so
that your body temperature measurements appear there. I was hoping I could also
take a look at another thermometer from “Kinsa”, it is an in-ear thermometer
which is only $69 Canadian, but they didn’t have it in stock and I like the
fact that with the Withings you just swipe it across your forehead and you can
be about half an inch away from the skin not even touching and it still works.
The girl who helped me at first showed me the box, I asked if there were any
way for me to actually feel it and she had no problem opening the box. I then
mentioned that given the relatively high price there was still the risk that
the app may not be accessible and she promptly said why don’t we pair it with
your phone and try it out. You can pair this via Bluetooth or WiFi and since I
didn’t want to try to do this over the open Apple wireless network at the store
we did bluetooth. At first we had a heck of a time to get it to work. She then
went in the back and said she wanted to talk to one fo their guys who might
know a lot more about it. They came back 5 minutes later and he told me he
owned the product himself and then showed me how to use it successfully. The
thermometer does have a display and you can assign measurements to different
family members, but you can also do this in the app and it all is quite
accessible. We wre also able to enable this in the Health app, but in order to
do so we had to use the search feature in the Health app and search for “body
temperature” and add this to the favourites screen so it’s there and easy to
find.
The results definitely seem to be accurate and you can of course set the Thermo
to display in Celsius or Fahrenheit and it’s pretty cool how fast it does this.
You basically start about in the middle of your forehead and swipe either to
the left or right to about your tempel, do it nice and slow and by the time you
get there the Thermo vibrates which means the measurement was taken.
All in all the experience at the Apple Store was fantastic, the service
outstanding and I ended up buying two of them since the manager of my retail
store and his girl-friend just had a baby and I thought this would make a good
present. They received tons of clothing from friends and babies do after all
get sick and it’s a good thing to have a good thermometer to check their
temperature. Of course if any of you guys are out on a date you can always
bring it and swipe it across your dates forehead to see how “hot” she is *bad
joke*.
Finally, below is a link for the product on the Withings website:
http://www.withings.com/us/en/products/thermo
If anybody owns one of the Kinsa in-ear thermometers maybe they can post their
experience and feedback since it is a less expensive option.

I think the next health and fitness item on our list is the Withings smart
scale, it seems to be one of the better ones out there compared to the other
major brands such as Fitbit, Qardio and so on.

Re: Is this a good price for an Apple TV?

Sieghard -
I am going to look into this because I do have a third generation that's going
to go to waste if I upgrade. I have experimented with Cody under Windows but
the speech was clunky and did not work for everything at the time. I do not
know if there have been improvements since then. There was no way to use it
under OS X with Voiceover at the time I was looking at it. Having it on an
Apple TV would be great!

believe you definitely need a Mac for this so if you are a PC user as far as I
know this is not possible.
Apparently all of us with an old Apple TV 2 could jailbreak it and install Kodi
on it and hence have an accessible box with Kodi. Something I may look into.

Re: Bluetooth ear buds without noise cancellation [was "Re: Apple Delays AirPods, October Launch No Longer Happening"]

2016-11-04 Thread SSEric
I just got the Bose sound sport Bluetooth earbuds last week. Their design has
only slight passive sound isolation. They use a flange on the bud that expands
to close off the ear canal. They do not go into the ear canal, though. I have
wondered if one cut that flange away, circumcise it, as it were, if it would
remove that bit of isolation. Haven't tried it yet.

buds, but ideally, I'd like to keep my stereoness and still listen to what's
going on around me.

Subject: Withings Thermo body thermometer - another great Apple Store
experience

The
thermometer does have a display and you can assign measurements to different
family members, but you can also do this in the app and it all is quite
accessible. We wre also able to enable this in the Health app, but in order to
do so we had to use the search feature in the Health app and search for “body
temperature” and add this to the favourites screen so it’s there and easy to
find.

The results definitely seem to be accurate and you can of course set the
Thermo to display in Celsius or Fahrenheit and it’s pretty cool how fast it
does this. You basically start about in the middle of your forehead and swipe
either to the left or right to about your tempel, do it nice and slow and by
the time you get there the Thermo vibrates which means the measurement was
taken.

If anybody owns one of the Kinsa in-ear thermometers maybe they can post
their experience and feedback since it is a less expensive option.

I think the next health and fitness item on our list is the Withings smart
scale, it seems to be one of the better ones out there compared to the other
major brands such as Fitbit, Qardio and so on.

  Best regards,

  Sieghard

I just installed the latest update in my iPhone 6s, and now it says hello in
different languages. I don't use any password. I don't find any button to
agree or accept the update, or return the phone to normal.
Any help, please? Thank you,
Rena

Just ddouble tap anywhere, the language doesn't matter, it simply displays
the Hello message in a number of languages which cycle around, this has
nothing to do with the language your iPhone uses. If you doble tap on the
messagee when it's in German it will still come up in English or at least
go to a screen where you can select your country and language.

Can't be. I've not seen anything to support Apple working on a new Apple TV. I
do use blogs like IDB, but totally rely on Apple's words in order to believe
it. Until then, I believe it when i see it.

 an

Hi Larry,

Kodi is the software that is on all these Android TV boxes you can buy for $80
to $150 and which let you watch a bunch of TV programs for free.

Here is a bit from their website and the link:
Kodi® (formerly known as XBMC™) is an award-winning free and open source (GPL)
software media center for playing videos, music, pictures, games, and more.
Kodi runs on Linux, OS X, Windows, iOS, and Android, featuring a 10-foot user
interface for use with televisions and remote controls.
It allows users to play and view most videos, music, podcasts, and other
digital media files from local and network storage media and the internet.

RE: Moore voice dream reader nonsense

2016-11-04 Thread Alan Lemly
Hi Mary,

I'm awfully sorry you've had all the problems with Voice Dream Reader. Your
experience has cautioned me against turning on iCloud sync in Voice Dream and I
just want to thank you for that. I've not had any problems with the app but I
only use it on one device so iCloud sync is not something I need.

I really hope you get it sorted and working to your satisfaction.

Hi Ari,

No, I haven't tried turning off iCloud sink yet. I almost did it last night,
then got cold feet and figured I would wait to hear from Winston. I have also
had that problem that you talked about where the speech goes away and text
continues to scroll. Mostly, it's on my iPad. In fact, I can't remember a
single instance since I got my 7+ of having it happen there. I thought it might
have to do with a slower iPad plus less memory and the iPad. But of course I
don't know.

Hi, Mary,

You've probably tried all this before, but I thought I might put it out there
anyhow. Have you tried turning off iCloud sync off for both devices, then
enabling it on your iPhone, for a day or two while keeping it off on your iPad
for that time, then turning it back on after those two days? Just a thought. It
might just joggle things in to place. I'm so sorry you've been having so many
issues with VDR. I have some issues with it stopping reading, but the text
continuing to scroll, and then the voice starting up again seconds later. I
wrote Winston about this, and he recommended deleting and reinstalling the
library. I haven't done this so far, because I have a big library, like you. I
hardly ever delete anything, and I have most things in folders. I'm kind of
nervous to find out what will happen to my library after deleting it and
bringing it back with iCloud sync.

Anyhow, I really hope you get things sorted.

understand what I'm talking about with my approximation, I will definitely send
him the exact message. It's easy to duplicate, since I have a lot of books and
they are all displaying this problem. I can not understand why bunches of books

I wasn't able to send the exact error message to Winston, because they select

send him an approximation. I guess I just don't have a voice dream reader luck.

I know you will probably already have done this, but for sure send the error

It sounds like an incomplete download or a internet connection issue.

Subject: Withings Thermo body thermometer - another great Apple Store experience

Best regards,
Sieghard

Tim Cook and a few others at Apple could answer that question, but they of
course won't and everything else is complete speculation and guessing. I assume
it is possible that they may release an update since I believe the current

Any help, please? Thank you,

RE: VoiceOver draining battery since 10.1 update

2016-11-04 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
This would mean just to do a power cycle, turn off the phone completely, wait
about 30 seconds and then turn it on again.
I rarely find a reason to use the power button + home key combination to to a
hard reboot.

Hi Sieghard,

just to clarify, when you say reboot, do you mean, turning your handset off and
back on again, or a hard reboot, with the power and home key?

Dave.

Subject: RE: VoiceOver draining battery since 10.1 update

There will always be crashes, I recently went to the Apple Store in Calgary
because my iPhone 6S Plus shut down several times when I was out and about and
when it was a bit colder outside. I keep the iPhone against my body so even
when it’s cold and I pull it out the phone is warm and while I could see it
shutting off when it’s -30 outside and I keep it out for a longer period of
time, it was not even 0 (or 32 as you americans would say). It was a few
degrees above 0, so around the mid to high 30’s) and whenever I restarted the
phone I would barely put in my PIN when it shut down again. Anyhow, I had
iPhones since the 4S in 2010 and none of them has ever done this so I assumed
it was maybe a faulty sensor inside the phone. The girl at the Apple Store ran
the full diagnostic and said she could see multiple crashes and suggested that
it is a good idea to reboot iPhones in general maybe once a week as this helps
to avoid certain issues which may arise when a phone has not been rebooted for
a very long time. Anyhow, I then upgraded to iOS 10.1.1 and the problem of my
phone shutting down persisted so I went back to the Apple Store, explained the
issue to a different Apple Genious and he agreed that this sounded strange and
since I have Apple Care Plus he replaced my phone. Since this was a warranty
replacement and not an accidental damage replacement this didn’t cost me a dime
except of course the time it took to get my new phone going again. Since it’s
been some time when I set up as a new phone I decided to do this. Calgary is
not home so I had brought my laptop and did it at the Apple Store, a very nice
guy at the “setup table” helped me throughout the process since I had all my
apps on my laptop with the latest updates and thought it would be faster to
sync them than to redownload them one by one. Since of course this is not
currently possible with Windows, Jaws and iTunes, the Apple guy checked off all
the apps I wanted and then got the sync going.

Sieghard

There is an update to IOS 10.2 available, perhaps you’d like to try this to see

I’m currently doing a complete restore of my iPhone, which means I’ll have to
download all the Navigon maps and fix other settings.
The problem occurred at home with a good connexion to our network. I find it
interesting that turning VoiceOver off cures the problem, so the internet
connexion couldn’t be the issue.

Hello Mary,
Thank you for your update on that front. Yes, it is indeed too bad. I
am wondering if the OoTunes app is having the same issue? A couple of

this app needs to be updated and by not updating the app and using it
that my iPhone will slow down. I have auto updates turned on for apps
and I did not see any update to it in the store.

Re: Radium

2016-11-04 Thread Chris Chaffin
Hello, I will also continue to use Radium as long as it works! I have not had
any problems so far, but it is sad to know that it is no longer being updated.
Since I primarily use it to listen to my Sirius XM stations, I went searching
the app store to see if there were any other apps out there that will do the
same thing. And to my dismay, I could not find any third party apps out there
that streams subscription internet radio stations like Sirius XM.
To bad an app something like Tune In would not add a feature like that to
listen to subscription based internet radio stations. That way everything
would be included in one app.

Hi Ari,
No, I haven't tried turning off iCloud sink yet.
But of course I
don't know.

enabling it on your iPhone, for a day or two while keeping it off on your iPad
for that time, then turning it back on after those two days?

Thanks,
Ari

As long as it works, I will keep using it. I don't know about ootunes, as I
haven't used it in years. Wasn't there a thing where Apple was going to start
taking lots of apps out of the store that had been updated in a certain amount
of time? That might will apply to ootunes. So you might want to keep a back up
of that around if you're still using it.

voicedream reader and problems with reading books in braille

2016-11-04 Thread Anouk Radix
Hello,
I have done some more testing with my brailliant and have noticed that
bluetooth braille works mostly fine in general ios and ibook sfor example but
it does not work well at all within voicedream reader. I am not sure how that
was before but I am talking about the current version. Braille is very sluggish
and unresponsive and the display also loses its bluetooth connection on
occasion. I was wondering if anyone else is experiencing problems with
voicedream in combination with a braille display?
Thanks in advance for any info,
Greetings, Anouk,

Subject: Voice dream reader question

I have voice dream reader on my iPhone 7 Plus and my iPad mini two. I have
been noticing, since the upgrade to iOS 10, that on the iPad, in the app
switcher, I get something that says voice dream reader according to your
current location, or something very close to that. And it cannot be
dismissed from the app switcher. This only seems to happen on the iPad.
Yesterday, four instance, I had voice dream reader on my iPad open. I got
finished with it, and dismissed the app from my app switcher. Having done
that, remaining in the app switcher what is this thing that says voice dream
reader according to your current location. If I double tap on it, it is
identified as a button, the app opens. This is frustrating, since you're not
supposed to have two voice dream readers open at once. Has anyone seen this?
Has anyone noticed a pattern? I can certainly write to Winston and will do
so. But I thought I would ask first to see what others had been
experiencing.

Mary

Well, I wouldn't do it. That's not that much cheaper than the new one. And
if money is a problem, you could get the 32 GB one new for cheaper, and
probably cheaper than that refurbished. You probably will not need the 64

are not large. We have the 32 GB model, and we are nowhere near running

2016-11-04 Thread Richard Turner

I think you have been amazingly patient with all the headaches you've had with
Voice Dream Reader. I wonder if you have demonstrated its limits since you have
the largest library I've ever heard of, at least for digital books.
It could be that the way VDR is compressing things for storage cannot handle
that many books without causing corruption. I have no idea.
I hope something better comes along for you.

Hi Richard,
I wasn't able to send the exact error message to Winston, because they select
text feature didn't work there, much to my great sorrow. So all I could do was
send him an approximation. I guess I just don't have a voice dream reader luck.
This app has been so much trouble ever since the big update. I just kind of

I know you will probably already have done this, but for sure send the error

It sounds like an incomplete download or a internet connection issue.
But, that is speculating far out of my league.

Subject: Withings Thermo body thermometer - another great Apple Store
experience

The
thermometer does have a display and you can assign measurements to different
family members, but you can also do this in the app and it all is quite
accessible. We wre also able to enable this in the Health app, but in order to
do so we had to use the search feature in the Health app and search for “body
temperature” and add this to the favourites screen so it’s there and easy to
find.

The results definitely seem to be accurate and you can of course set the
Thermo to display in Celsius or Fahrenheit and it’s pretty cool how fast it
does this. You basically start about in the middle of your forehead and swipe
either to the left or right to about your tempel, do it nice and slow and by
the time you get there the Thermo vibrates which means the measurement was
taken.

If anybody owns one of the Kinsa in-ear thermometers maybe they can post
their experience and feedback since it is a less expensive option.

I think the next health and fitness item on our list is the Withings smart
scale, it seems to be one of the better ones out there compared to the other
major brands such as Fitbit, Qardio and so on.

  Best regards,

  Sieghard

Well, it does more than stream music an movies. You can log in to most
channels offered buy a service provider like time warner, comcast, or direct.
Of course you must pay for these subscriptions, or get someone to share there
info with you. The appleTV also has some games to be played on it. My
favorite app is infuse, this allows me to stream my entire movie collection to
my appleTV4 without using iTunes, or having to leave my mac on for Plex or some
other third party. And the best part about it, I don’t have to convert my
movie files in to mp4, they can be any format and infuse will stream them. The
most important thing for most of us, is we don’t need sited help to control the
appleTV, voiceover reads everything on the screen so we can control HBO,
netflix, Hulu, or whatever service you are using, including the network TV apps
at that have on demand content.

Keep in mind that you can dictate anywhere including spelling passwords and
user names. Also, if you have a bluetooth keyboard you can pair it for easier
typing and in fact you can pretty much control the Apple TV completely with a
bluetooth keyboard. Only thing I can't remember now is if there is a way to
invoke SIRI with a bluetooth keyboard.

Subject: Loving Apple tv, have more questions

Hello to Daniel and all who have helped me with my Apple tv, so far. I really
appreciate it.

I really dislike saying this, because I was so hesetant to purchase it.
But I absolutely love it! I think it's awesome!

My friend helped me set it up, because I didn't see the message in time,
telling me how to start voiceover. But once we got voiceover on, I took
  it over.

I actually like the little gesture area. I thought it would be very
difficult to use. But not at all. And I like how you press the little
clicker thing at the end. Ok, surely not the propper name for it. LOL!

The keyboard is still a bit confusing to me. But overall I like the new
set up so far. I find it faster to choose letters, and such.

Also, one feature I really loved, was how easy it was to set it up, and
connect to my network. I liked how I unlocked my phone, and held it near
the tv. That was too cool how it used the bluetooth. The set up was
  flawless.

I haven't done much with it, beyond that. Mainly, because I am not sure
  what to do.

How do I get my apps like, CBS, Hulu, and Netflix on there?

Even if they are on my Ipad, and I have subscriptions, do I have to
download them on to the Apple TV?

I couldn't find an area where I could see all my apps. But maybe I don't
  know where to look.

Also, if I want other free or subscription-based apps for movies, or tv
shows, how do I go about finding such stuff?

Unfortunately, I don't know many apps, and I honestly don't know how to
  search for such things.

I'd like to find apps that are pretty accessible. But I'd try some apps
just to check them out as well, if I knew how to find them.

Also, how do you know which news apps give broadcasts of stories, and
  not just articles?

I know NPR has a news app.

Any help with any of this would be much appreciated. I'm going to mess
around with the Apple tv more, tomorrow. I am definitely happy I bought
it. I can't believe now that I was so intimidated by it.

  Thank you,

  Terri

2016-11-04 Thread Dave

Sieghard

I’m currently doing a complete restore of my iPhone, which means I’ll have to
download all the Navigon maps and fix other settings.

The problem occurred at home with a good connexion to our network. I find it
interesting that turning VoiceOver off cures the problem, so the internet
connexion couldn’t be the issue.

The
most important thing for most of us, is we don’t need sited help to control the
appleTV, voiceover reads everything on the screen so we can control HBO,
netflix, Hulu, or whatever service you are using, including the network TV apps
at that have on demand content.

hear the menu and shedule normal tv programs etc.?
I am not a movie fan so I ask this question on behalf of a blind friend who

  Thank you,

  Terri

Re: Apps Updating Even When Background Refresh Is Off

2016-11-04 Thread Arnold Schmidt
As I have said, the aformentioned settings in background app refresh and in
iTunes and App store, were, are, and always have been turned off. I don't know
why it was that, sometimes, when I would check the updates tab in app store, I
would discover that, occasionally, an app would have updated without my having
authorized it to do so. It was not every app, and there seemed to be no rhyme
or reason which ones did and which ones didn't. It has not happened in the last
couple days, maybe it has stopped, I hope so. I probably will never know why it
happened. Whatever.

Hi Arnold,

This is not correct, Background App Refresh has absolutely nothing to do with
apps updating automatically, it simply determines whether apps for which
background app refresh is on do exactly that "refresh when they are in the
background" and this refers to content only, not to actual apps updating to a
newer version. Here is what Apple has to say about Background App Refresh:

Use Background App Refresh

After you switch to a different app, some apps run for a short period of time
before they're set to a suspended state. Apps that are in a suspended state
aren’t actively in use, open, or taking up system resources.
With Background App Refresh, suspended apps can check for updates and new
content.
If you want suspended apps to check for new content, go to Settings > General >
Background App Refresh and turn on Background App Refresh.
If you quit an app from the app switcher, it might not be able to run or check
for new content before you open it again.

Whether apps update automatically or wait for you to initiate the update
manually is entirely determined in Settings > iTunes and App Store.
Note that there is a difference between turning on or off "Apps" and "Updates".
The heading says "Automatic Downloads" and the explanation says "Automatically
download new purchases, including free, made on other devices".
The items you can turn on or off are this:
Music
Apps
Books and Audio Books
Updates
Maybe this is a bit misleading although it's clear to me. The first 3 refer to
automatic downloads for purchases made on other devices. For example, if you
turn on all 3, Music, Apps as well as Books and Audio Books, then if you
purchase any of these let's say on an ipad or in iTunes on your computer the
items will automatically download to your iPhone.
The last item, Updates, has nothing to do with purchases made on other devices
since updates aren't purchases. You can trust me that if you make sure this is
turned off then none of your apps will update automatically since "Automatic
downloads for updates" is off. What I am not sure about is whether if you have
Apps turned on and an app is updated on another device whether that will then
also happen on your iPhone. I actually doubt it, but I'm not sure. This of
course only applies anyways if you have Automatic Downloads for apps purchased
on other devices turned on, if you want to be sure just turn off both Apps and
Updates.
As for Background App Refresh, you can also turn most of them off, it will save
you some battery especially if you keep apps open in the app switcher. If you
are like me and remove everything from the app switcher that you don't use all
the time several times a day then it doesn't matter anyways, you can have
Background App Refresh turned on for every single app and as long as said app
is not actually running in the app switcher (suspended or not) nothing happens.

Regards,
Sieghard

That was already off. As I read it, that setting has to do with automaticly
updating apps that were downloaded or updated on another device on more Apple
ID. Background App Refresh allows apps already on my device to update in the
background without my telling them to update. Either way, both settings ′were,
and are, off, yet, for example, Voice Dream Reader updated yesterday
automatically. I hope I can get this stopped, before something updates to an
unaccessible version without my permission.

Hello Sieghard,

I, too, have had iPhones since June 2009 and this is the first one to crash on
me. It isn’t as though I don’t use it for much either. I do a lot of reading on
my iPhone, as well as using OCR, GPS, barcode recognition, Talking Goggles,
Light Detector, news apps, and so on.
I shut down my iPhone every night, too.
Restoring to factory settings isn’t too bad for me as I back up my iPhone to my
Mac, so no apps to download.

Cheers,

RE: Radium

2016-11-04 Thread BBS
Oh well. I'll still use the app even if it's not being developed anymore. It's
still far more accessible than the native Sirius XM app. And besides, look at
Ootunes. It hasn't been updated in god knows how long and I'm betting that it
still works with iOS 10.

I got a response to my email to the folks at radium regarding the recent
message that the app needs to be updated for iOS 10, and it is not good news.
Radium, they informed me, is no longer being developed. They did say they are
maintaining their database. They did not specify that it was only the iPhone
app that was not being developed. My question was about that app, but they said
nothing at all about the Mac app, no distinction was drawn between the iPhone
app being developed or not and the Mac app being developed or not. Therefore, I
think it means radium development is not happening on any front. Too bad, as it
was a great app but will undoubtedly come up not working at all sooner or later.
