Hi List,

I am wondering if others experience this annoying issue where when you dial a
call and it starts ringing in the earpiece you then place your phone against
your ear and as soon as the other party answers the call decides to switch to
speakerphone. You have to take the phone away from the ear, wait a second or
two and then put it back up to your face before it usually switches back to the
earpiece. Of course if you are in a public place this can be annoying since
usually the other party can't hear you right away and keeps asking what's going
on.

In my opinion this is not a hardware issue since this happened on my 6S Plus
which was just replaced under warranty and the new phone has the exact same
issue. This replacement phone was also set up as a new phone and was not
restored from a backup.

I seem to remember that this started happening when I started to use Ios 10 and
so far it continues to happen almost 100% of the time, from time to time I make
a call and it does not happen. At the same time if I start a call and then put
the phone to my face and take it away or put my hand over the top of the phone
and then take it away to trigger the audio to go to speakerphone, the call
usually reverts to the earpiece when somebody answers so the issues seems to go
both ways.

Best regards,

Sieghard

I wanted to mention too after I put the phone to my ear if you do it quick
enough you hear incoming call, kind of strange since it is an out going call.

Sieghard

RE: Apple Released a New iOS 10.1.1 Version Today

2016-11-09 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Alan,

At first I was going to reply and ask if you are really sure whether the iOS
10.1.1 update actually installed when you did it the first time or whether
maybe this is "iOS 10.1.1 Trump Edition".
I had never heard Apple released an update with the same version number. Also,
when I did a Check for Updates on my iPhone it said it was up-to-date. Then I
googled this and bingo, MacRumours solved the puzzle, here is what they had to
say:

Apple Releases Updated Version of iOS 10.1.1
Wednesday November 9, 2016 10:29 am PST by Juli
Clover
Apple today seeded a minor version change to iOS
10.1.1, the current version of the
iOS 10 operating system. The update is minor enough that it did not warrant a
full 10.x.x number change, but it does include an updated build number.
iOS 10.1.1 being released today has a build number of 14B150, while the initial
iOS 10.1.1
release, which
came on October 31, had a build number of 14B100.
The new build of iOS 10.1.1 is only available as a download from Apple's
servers and cannot be obtained over-the-air at this time for those who have
already installed the first version of iOS 10.1.1. The new version of iOS
10.1.1 will likely be provided to those who have yet to install iOS 10.1.1, as
it otherwise requires an iTunes connection to obtain.
There is no new information in the changelog for the updated build, so it is
unclear what minor bug fixes or changes it brings.
The first version of iOS 10.1.1 fixed a bug that caused Health data to be
unavailable for some users. A minor update, iOS 10.1.1 was released shortly
after iOS
10.1,
a more significant update that brought a new "Portrait" mode and dozens of bug
fixes and feature improvements.

Here is the link for the article:
http://www.macrumors.com/2016/11/09/apple-releases-new-version-of-ios-10-1-1/

I don't think I'll bother to connect to iTunes to download this since nobody
even seems to know what they fixed. I just assume that if it were important
enough for Apple to want people who are already on 10.1.1 to have this updated
built then they would have pushed it out as version 10.1.2 and made it
available also for over-the-air upgrades.

Regards,
Sieghard

Re: App Support?

2016-11-09 Thread Wayne Merritt
Hi. I got the same alert not long ago about ooTunes. Though it has not
been updated in several years, I've heard from other people on this
list that the developer is responsive about adding stations and fixing
issues with current stations accessed through the app. I am usually
not one to hang onto an app that hasn't been updated in awhile, but
there are many stations that I listen to with ooTunes, like Clear
Channel or others, that I can get with that one app. Verses having to
download several different apps to do the job of one.

Another great way to tell if the phone is off would be to flick the mute
switch, if it is off nothing happens, if it is on there should be a brief
vibration when you flick it towards the back to the mute position.

One difference between the actual Home button on older iPhones and the Home
button on the new iPhone 7: if you turn the iPhone 7/Plus off, nothing will
happen to the Home button when you push it in. This is different from older
phones where even when the phone is off, the button could be pressed. Of
course, nothing would happen to the phone in that case, but still it is a way
to see if your iPhone 7 is off.

I am teaching a student with neuropathy who has an iPhone 5S. He self-reports
that he can feel the home button on my iPhone 7 better than he can on his 5S.

RE: app to vibrate the time when muted?

2016-11-09 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Dan,

I don't think this exists although it would be a great addition to iOS. The
Apple Watch can give you the time silently via vibrations, you simply double
tap the screen and it will give you hours and minutes or, if you know the hour
you can triple tap the screen and it will only vibrate the minutes.
There are 3 styles of vibrations you can choose from, one gives you the time in
morse code if you happen to know morse code, the other two are just two
different patterns which are pretty easy to learn.
I really don't see why this feature couldn't be added to the iPhone, just
double tap the screen when the phone is locked and it would vibrate the time in
the same way the watch does. This would be a useful feature for anybody who
wants a silent way to tell the time and also benefit the DeafBlind community.

Sieghard

Hi,

Does anyone know of an app that will vibrate the time when the phone is muted?
I need to check the time but also to have my phone muted so it doesn't disturb
meetings and other situations.

What I am looking for is an app that if I press the lock button and the phone
is muted it will simply vibrate the current time. I realize that I would have
to learn how to interpret the vibrations to know what time it is.

Thanks.

Re: no home button?

2016-11-09 Thread Wayne Merritt
One difference between the actual Home button on older iPhones and the
Home button on the new iPhone 7: if you turn the iPhone 7/Plus off,
nothing will happen to the Home button when you push it in. This is
different from older phones where even when the phone is off, the
button could be pressed. Of course, nothing would happen to the phone
in that case, but still it is a way to see if your iPhone 7 is off.

I am teaching a student with neuropathy who has an iPhone 5S. He
self-reports that he can feel the home button on my iPhone 7 better
than he can on his 5S.

Apple Released a New iOS 10.1.1 Version Today

2016-11-09 Thread Alan Lemly
I got an iTunes message telling me there was a new iOS version to download
when I executed check for update. I was confused when the new version had
the exact same iOS version number as the one currently running on my iPhone
7. Apparently, Apple did release a new build of iOS 10.1.1 today and didn't
change the version number which seems a bit confusing to me.

Here's a link to an article which discusses the update and I'll paste the
text of it after my signature:

http://www.macrumors.com/2016/11/09/apple-releases-new-version-of-ios-10-1-1
/

I have not yet downloaded the update.

Apple Releases Updated Version of iOS 10.1.1

Wednesday November 9, 2016 10:29 am PST by Juli Clover

Apple today seeded a minor version change to iOS 10
.1.1, the current version of the
iOS 10 operating system. The update is minor enough that it did not warrant
a full 10.x.x number change, but it does include an updated build number.

iOS 10.1.1 being released today has a build number of 14B150, while the
initial iOS 10.1.1 release
 , which
came on October 31, had a build number of 14B100.

The new build of iOS 10.1.1 is only available as a download from Apple's
servers and cannot be obtained over-the-air at this time for those who have
already installed the first version of iOS 10.1.1. The new version of iOS
10.1.1 will likely be provided to those who have yet to install iOS 10.1.1,
as it otherwise requires an iTunes connection to obtain.

There is no new information in the changelog for the updated build, so it is
unclear what minor bug fixes or changes it brings.

The first version of iOS 10.1.1 fixed a bug that caused Health data to be
unavailable for some users. A minor update, iOS 10.1.1 was released shortly
after iOS 10.1
, a more significant update that brought a new "Portrait" mode and
dozens of bug fixes and feature improvements.

Belkin Lightening Audio + Charge Rockstar Adapter

2016-11-09 Thread Alan Lemly
Hello List,

I purchased one of these $39.95 adapters directly from the Apple Store so I
could both listen to and charge my iPhone 7 using my wired earpods. The
adapter works well for the most part but I'm having an occasional issue with
it. I leave it attached to my lightning USB cable which is plugged into my
computer and at least twice, iTunes hasn't recognized my attached iPhone 7
when connected to the Belkin adapter. I've had to remove the adapter and
attach my USB lightning cable directly to the iPhone.

Other than that, the adapter has worked well with my iPhone and all the
earpod buttons work well with the adapter.

app to vibrate the time when muted?

2016-11-09 Thread Dan

Hi,

Does anyone know of an app that will vibrate the time when the phone is
muted? I need to check the time but also to have my phone muted so it
doesn't disturb meetings and other situations.

What I am looking for is an app that if I press the lock button and the
phone is muted it will simply vibrate the current time. I realize that
I would have to learn how to interpret the vibrations to know what time
it is.

Thanks.

Re: Notes and voiceover

2016-11-09 Thread becky knaub
I have tried it both ways. I find it it is more likely to work going line by
line in edit mode. Unfortunately my client wants to go line by line in notes
when he is not editing but rather when he is reading. Do you notice with his
iPad that sometimes even doing the line by line navigation in editing mode
still doesn't work. Mine does that once in a while. But that is why I decided
not to use Notes and use other apps such as word and notebooks. Thanks for the
help. I appreciate it.

Interesting. When I swipe down by line in a note I am able to move by
line. When trying to do this, are you in the editing text mode where
you can write, edit and navigate text?

Calling via Skype is no longer presented as an option when I open a contact

2016-11-09 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi List,

I just noticed this and I'm not sure if it's a 10.1.1 bug, but when 10.1 came
out and Skype and Whats App both had released updates to support SIRI
integration, I also had the options to call via Skype or Whats App when I
opened a contact, did a one-finger swipe up or down on the "Call" button to
bring up the "Show Options" selection and then double tapped. This would then
list all the phone numbers for the contact along with options to call said
numbers directly via Skype or Whats App. If I double tapped let's say on
somebody's home number via the Skype option Skype would open and the call would
be placed. Last night I wanted to do this and I no longer have calling via
Skype as an option. Whats App is still there and I checked all my settings and
can't see where I am missing something. In the Skype app under the My Info tab
and Settings the option for "Integrated Calling" is on, if I go to Settings >
SIRI and check at the bottom under the "App Support" button both Skype and
Whats App are listed and turned on. In Settings > Privacy > Contacts Skype is
allowed access to my contacts and I tried in all three places to turn the
feature off and back on, but still I don't get calling via Skype as an option.
There was also a Skype update this morning, but it seems to make no difference.
I am wondering if others still have calling via Skype showing up when you are
in a contact? Once again, to check open a contact, on the "Call" button
(sometimes Voiceover seems to say "Call Call" swipe down with one finger and
double tap when Voiceover says "Show Options". Now check that pop-up list/menu
to see what choices you have. Of course it goes without saying that you do have
to have Skype installed.
I just tested making a Skype call with SIRI where I said "Call so and so via
Skype" where so and so was a name I do have as a Skype contact and it went
through, just seems that the option to call via Skype in contacts has
disappeared.

Sieghard

Re: The Updated Gmail iOS App and VoiceOver

2016-11-09 Thread Craig Werner
Hello, Sieghard.

I quite forgot when I posted my reply to Carol that the user can
delete the entire contents of the trash mailbox with one press of a
button in the native Mail app. I still think there is a place for the
Gmail app for those who prefer a streamlined, single-minded gateway to
Gmail. I am a fan of apps that do not present over-complicated
scenarios. Having said that, I also use the native aMail app and
think that overall, it does a good job in uniting a number of
functions.

 Hello, everyone.

It might be of interest to a number of you that the latest
 release of
the Gmail app for iOS devices operates somewhat differently with
VoiceOver than did previous versions, and based on the testing I
 have
done, the app has improved for VoiceOver users. In earlier
 versions,
if one wanted to delete a message from the message index, one would
have to check a checkbox next to its header information and then
 press
a "Delete" button. Now, double-tap and holding the button
corresponding to the unwanted message places the app in a "Select"
mode. The user can then move down the list of messages and simply
double-tap the unwanted ones; the "hold" gesture needs to be
 used only
on the first undesired message. Then, once the "delete" list has
been compiled, the "Delete" button can be activated. There are
 other
ways to get rid of messages, but I don't want to make this message
overly long. There is also an "Undo" button which evidently allows
the user to take back a number of actions. I have not tested this
function yet. Most gratifying is the possibility that the bug
 which
prevented text editing of the body of a message may have been
squashed, at least if the user is typing on the on-screen
 keyboard. I
haven't tested it with a Bluetooth keyboard yet.

RE: which phones have offline dictation

2016-11-09 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
It simply means that dictation works when the phone has no internet connection
or is in Airplane mode. In this case the voice recognition is done on the phone
instead of by Apple servers in the cloud. It seems to work just the same as
when you are online.

Hi Garry and All,
When Kindle changed their app so the status bar no longer shows while you are
in the app, Speak Screen went away.
It only works in apps where the status bar shows.
Perhaps eMailing the developer would be a good idea.
Personally, I now convert Kindle books to ePub and read them in Voice Dream
Reader.
Codex is a nice free piece of software for doing this.
I have a link to it on my web site: www.turner42.com

Hi Anna,

That's amazing, I really don't undersand why there isn't a DialPad,
definitely something I will have to submit as feedback/a feature
request.

I did check under Settings > Phone and for "Calls on other devices" it
says "When Nearby". If I double tap on that it says that it is turned on
and that is the only setting I see.

Unfortunately Telus, one of the 3 big carriers in Canada, for some
reason does not yet offer Wi-Fi calling, hopefully this will change
soon.

I wonder why my Watch didn't ring then yesterday since my phone was
connected to my store's WiFi network and according to what you said this
means my watch should also be connected.

Another oddity I noticed is that when I open the Messages app I saw all
my messages, but a few of the iMessage threads I had deleted on my
phone, but they still showed up on the watch. Shouldn't they go away on
the watch if they are deleted on the phone.

Thanks,

Sieghard

Hi Sieghard,

No, there's no dial pad for the phone on the watch. There aren't Wi-Fi
settings either, but your watch does have Wi-Fi capability, and it will
join any network that your phone has joined. As a result, you can get
iMessages and notifications even if your phone is off. I believe that if
your phone and watch are connected to the same Wi-Fi network, you can
get calls on your watch if you have Wi-Fi Calling turned on. Note that
not all cell networks allow Wi-Fi calling. Check in Phone Settings on
your phone. Wi-Fi Calling and Calls on Other Devices should both be
turned on.

I hope that's of some help.

Best,

Anna

Hi Watchers (is that a good name to call us Apple Watch users?),

I am fairly new to the Apple Watch. Am I missing something or is there
no DialPad in the phone app on the Apple Watch? If so I really hope
Apple will fix this because this means you can’t use it at all to make
phone calls to anywhere you may have to enter an extension or press a
number to reach a certain department etc. Nowadays this means most phone
calls to larger and medium sized companies are not possible with the
Apple Watch since so many businesses nowadays have auto-answer systems
where you do have to press some numbers. It’s not as if it couldn’t
be done, after all there is a keypad for entering your passcode which is
basically the same as the Dialpad of the phone app without the Asterisk
and Number keys.

Also, I thought the Apple Watch used WiFi, but I don’t see a WiFi
setting anywhere, just bluetooth. Yesterday I had left my phone in the
office at my retail store and was up front with a customer, maybe 50 or
60 feet away from the office. I heard my phone ring in the office, but
my Apple Watch didn’t ring, it then started ringing as I walked a bit
closer, but by then it was too late to pick up the call before it went
to voice mail.

Regards,

Sieghard

The Gmail app works specifically with Google accounts, and I can't see
a way to force it out of its comfort zone. As to why someone would
want to use it, one might not need the power and data sharing

separate from the activity on there accounts. If for some reason a
user had to delete the Apple iOS mail account and had to start over,
and if one of the accounts under the app was a POP3, all messages
might be lost, including those on the Gmail account. Perhaps the
interface is just pleasant to some. There are some handy elements,
such as the "Empty Trash" button. The text explaining the new
features of V. 5.0.13 claims that with one swipe, the entire Inbox of
a Gmail account can be cleaned out. I haven't tested this feature
with VoiceOver.

Now, double-tap and holding the button
corresponding to the unwanted message places the app in a "Select"
mode. The user can then move down the list of messages and simply
double-tap the unwanted ones; the "hold" gesture needs to be used
only
on the first undesired message. Then, once the "delete" list has
been compiled, the "Delete" button can be activated. There are
other
ways to get rid of messages, but I don't want to make this message
overly long. There is also an "Undo" button which evidently allows
the user to take back a number of actions. I have not tested this
function yet. Most gratifying is the possibility that the bug which
prevented text editing of the body of a message may have been
squashed, at least if the user is typing on the on-screen
keyboard. I
haven't tested it with a Bluetooth keyboard yet.
