Hi Jewel,

Apple Airpods are like Apple Earpods except that they are bluetooth/wireless.
They look exactly like
your earpods if you were to cut off the cable right underneath the hard plastic
stem.
They have a new chip Apple developed called the W1 chip and they come in a
little case/cradle which
also recharges them and as soon as you open the case a message pops up on the
iPhone that it found
Airpods and it asks if you want to connect. They have no on/off switch, no
volume control or any
other buttons or switches. If you take them out of your ear they turn off or I
guess go to sleep and
at this point all you can do in terms of control is to tap one of them twice to
bring up SIRI or, if
the phone is ringing, a double tap on the Airpods will answer the call. They
sound very good, but
are also very expensive, $160 in the US, here in Canada $220 Canadian and a
friend in Germany told
me they are 180 Euros there which is even more since currently 180 Euros
converts to about $195 US.

Sieghard

Hello Everyone,

Well, a couple of days ago, I walked into my local Apple store and just
happened to arrive at the
exact moment they received a shipment of 7 pairs of Airpods.

Talk about luck, eh?

Anyway, I must say that I am delighted with the results of the AirPods in terms
of their sound
quality and compatibility with my iPhone 6 Plus and MacBook Pro Mid 2014.

I can honestly say that they are well worth the purchase price.

For the first time ever, I can, on the fly, easily switch between a one ear
configuration and a two
ear Bluetooth headset configuration, while using my iPhone and MacBook Pro.
Very, very nice,
indeed.

Give them a try at your first opportunity.

RE: bluetooth earbud recommendations?

2017-02-01 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Ari,

Plantronics makes a bunch of single ear earpieces as well as stereo headphones.
Unfortunately not all of them are made equal. I had, at one point, bought a
rather expensive Plantronics Backbeat Sense (I think that is what it was
called) and even though it was a Bluetooth 4.0 or even 4.1 stereo headset and
it sounded super nice with music, it had such a bad lag that is was unuseable
with Voiceover. I think in the end you just have to trywhat works or buy
something that was recommended based on personal experience.

Sieghard, I'd love to have something like the Voyager Edge, but in a stereo
form factor. Now, that'd be just awesome! Do you know if the company who makes
the Voyager has released a stereo headset that has the Voyager Edge featureso,
and that is just as responsive as the Voyager Edge?

Thanks,
Ari

I have tried a bunch of different bluetooth earpieces, stereo headsets and
speakers, some expensive others not so and some with the latest bluetooth
version and others with Bluetooth 2.1. I found that just because a device says
it has Bluetooth 4.0 or 4.1 does not mean it is more responsive. One example
was the Plantronics Backbeat Sense I think it was called. A rather expensive,
very nice sounding stereo bluetooth headset. It has Bluetooth 4.0, but the lag
was so bad that is was unuseable with Voiceover. My 5-year old first generation
Outdoor Tech OT DJ Slims which aren't even available any more and which I
received as a sample at a trade show (they retailed for around $50 for a stereo
headset) use Bluetooth 2.1 and they are as responsive as it gets.
The Voyager Edge I would classify also int hat category, as responsive as it
gets because a bluetooth headset, earpiece or speaker without lag does not
exist at this point.
When you turn them on the voice of the headset says the remaining talk time
(max is 6 hours) and then it will say "Phone 1 connected". I also have it
paired to my Apple Watch, so it says "Phone 1 connected", then there is a beep
and almost instantly it goes on to say "Phone 2 Connected".
Then in the status bar of the iPhone it says "Headphones connected" and if you
swipe right once from there it will give you the battery level, just checked
and as the headset said "Talk time 5 hours" the status line display says
"Bluetooth battery 81%".
It works beautifully with my iPhone and Apple Watch, the switching is very
quick and if I am, for example, listening to a book on my phone and a
notification comes in on the watch I get the sound in the headset, the book
pauses at that point and a cople of seconds later it resumes playing the book.
The headset also senses if it's in your ear, if you are playing a book or
music it will pause when you take it out of your ear and resume when you put it
back and it has voice commands for when a phone call comes in, all I have to
say is "Answer" and it will pick up the call without me ever touching the
earpiece.
You can invoke SIRI and push and hold the little button on the boom for
play/pause.
Currently I think this is a much better option than the Airpods, yes, it is an
earpiece and not stereo earbuds, but it apparently works so much better with
Voiceover on an iPhone and Apple watch together. I tried out the Airpods and
they sound awesome, they are super small and light and I'd love to have a pair,
but until you can control volume and have play/pause and forward/rewind
capability via touch controls on the Airpods I won't spend that much money.
Given how often you hear this also from the main stream press I wouldn't be
surprised if Apple would release a second generation of the Airpods this fall
which have all of these features.

Sieghard

serious issue in ios 10.2.1 and 10.3 beta. please report.

2017-02-01 Thread Mário Gabriel

Hi
Serious issue in ios 10.2.1
and ios 10.3 beta.
on iPhone 5S and iPad mini 2.

When we are using the VO with a bluethoot keyboard, and we move the
percentage of brightness on the keyboard, VO stops talking.

You can only hear the navigation sounds.
VO stands completely unusable.
To solve the issue, the keyboard must be turned off.
This issue does not occur without the bluetooth keyboard.

I've tried several ways to resolve the issue, but without success.

I am using an apple bluetooth keyboard.
If any of you have this issue, report this to apple.
I already did, but we all have to do it .
cheers.

Markdown is a way to format text in a simple text editor such as Voice Dream
Writer or the Plain Text iOS app. You can make lists, headings, bold and
italicize text, and much more. Here's a good link that goes through the
different things you can do with Markdown. It took me a bit to find a good
article.

The Ultimate Guide to Writing & Publishing with Markdown

https://www.google.com/amp/s/blog.ghost.org/markdown/amp/?client=safari

I'm not sure why I can't get an actual link instead of a Google link. Google's
been doing that a lot lately--opening pages as Google links, I mean--instead of
redirecting me to the actual site. If that link doesn't work, Googling The
Ultimate Guide to Markdown, by John O'Nolan, should yield results. I hope this
helps.

Thanks,

Re: bluetooth earbud recommendations?

2017-02-01 Thread Marie
I just recently got a Voyager Edge and I am having problems connecting to
two devices. I have an IPhone 6 and a 6S. I pair the device with the 6S
which is my primary phone and it says it is paired to Phone 1. then when I
try to pair it with the 6, it says paired to Phone 1 instead of phone 2 as I
would expect and it does not seem to switch automatically. So what am I
doing wrong?

Thanks, Marie

Hi Reggie,

If they work on an iPad they should work on the iPhone and vice versa, there
is no reason I can think of why this would not be the case.

In my opinion the Voyager Edge is one of the better bluetooth earpieces out
there (single ear). It's small, sound quality is excellent, it has voice
answer, play/pause, volume, SIRI and it can connect to multiple devices.

How does the portability of the Voyager compared to something like the
Trekzz? Can you put the Voyager in your pocket easily? This is why I
typically go for earbuds rather than a headset in that if I'm going out
without a backpack it's tougher to take one.

2017-02-01 Thread englishrider91
Sieghard, I'd love to have something like the Voyager Edge, but in a stereo
form factor. Now, that'd be just awesome! Do you know if the company who makes
the Voyager has released a stereo headset that has the Voyager Edge featureso,
and that is just as responsive as the Voyager Edge?

Thanks,

Re: Text editing/word processing

2017-02-01 Thread englishrider91

I hope this
helps.

Mark! I haven't been following, in detail, the string on ear/airpods, so my

Hello Everyone,

Well, a couple of days ago, I walked into my local Apple store and just
happened to arrive at the exact moment they received a shipment of 7 pairs
of Airpods.

Talk about luck, eh?

Anyway, I must say that I am delighted with the results of the AirPods in
terms of their sound quality and compatibility with my iPhone 6 Plus and
MacBook Pro Mid 2014.

I can honestly say that they are well worth the purchase price.

For the first time ever, I can, on the fly, easily switch between a one ear
configuration and a two ear Bluetooth headset configuration, while using my
iPhone and MacBook Pro. Very, very nice, indeed.

Give them a try at your first opportunity.

Mark

RE: Mark on AirPods

2017-02-01 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Apparently the switching between iPhone and Apple Watch is far from seamless.
Then of course there is the fact that you can't control the volume unless you
ask SIRI to do it or you pull out your iPhone. Of course this means that if you
are on an airplane or elsewhere where SIRI is not available because of a lack
of internet connection any controls are strictly via the phone.
I tried a pair at one of the Apple Stores in Vancouver and I agtree that they
sound very nice, but they are super expensive and until they offer volume and
play/pause directly from the headset I'll wait. Since the lack of volume
control seems to be a big complaint I strongly assume that the second
generation of Airpods which probably come out later this year will have it and
they are just too expensive to buy and then to buy again inside a year when
they get improved.

Sieghard

Re: bluetooth earbud recommendations?

2017-02-01 Thread regina alvarado

Two questions that might be on or off topic, not sure.

1 I have 2 headphones that are bluetooth. One works on the phone and not on
iPad. One works on iPad and not iPhone. Why? Shouldn't bluetooth be bluetooth?

2 What do you call the earphone that fits in one ear? How do I find the one-ear
earphones, and which are" the best to work with iPad and iPhone?

Hello everyone,

Has anyone used this app for research?
I am having trouble knowing how to download an article to E-mail.
I have looked at the help directory, and it has not seemed to produce the
desired effect.
I would appreciate any help from those who have used this app on the iPhone.
I don’t need snide comments because I know how to access technical support, but
I am posting here to know if people use this app with voiceover.

Thanks for any help anyone can provide.

Hello Everyone,

Well, a couple of days ago, I walked into my local Apple store and just
happened to arrive at the exact moment they received a shipment of 7 pairs of
Airpods.

Talk about luck, eh?

Anyway, I must say that I am delighted with the results of the AirPods in terms
of their sound quality and compatibility with my iPhone 6 Plus and MacBook Pro
Mid 2014.

Incorrect, as of recently you can subscribe to Netflix via the app itself,
Spotify also lets you subscribe via the app and has been like this for a while.
Keep in mind there is a higher charge in the latter app versus the website.

Apple tv 4 and fluctuating voiceover any cure but to restart the Apple tv?

2017-02-01 Thread Jesper Holten
Dear all.
We recently purchased an Apple Tv 4 after having had an apple tv for a
couple of years. The Atv is connected to our Flatscreen tv through
HDMI obviously, which the prior atv3 also used as the connection,
actually we reused the same cable and just connected the new unit.
After the unit has been connected for anything between a day and a
couple of days, voiceover starts fluctuating in voulume when you
navigate through apps and the home screen, as well as menus.
Regardless of the TtS used and speed settings etc. I should add that
the sound of the apple tv comes through the build in speakers of the
flatscreen tv, rather than a reciever. The sound of any media content,
e.g. netflix youtube etc, is not fluctuating only Voiceover. We have
of course to quit and restart voiceover as well but no joy. Only a
rstart seems to work. We are running TvOS 10.1.2. ...
Any idea as to what might help here is greatly appreciated. Besides
this issue we really like the new ATV 4 and the fact that you can
download and use alot of apps for premium tv contents.
Kindest regards and thank you in advance.
Jesper and Abigail..

75 Million is a drop in the bucket for the likes of Apple, Google and probably
even Microsoft and Amazon. Apple could buy these guys and it would be like
going out for a nice dinner for the likes of you and me. But let's wait and see
what they'll do, I think we'll all see some amazing stuff in the next 5-10

for that matter also in computer vision/recognition.

Subject: SoundHound Takes Aim at Alexa, Siri as Voice Search’s Top Dog

This article was in yesterday’s Wall Street Journal. For those outside the
United States wanting the Hound app, it looks like your dream will come true
soon. Sound Hound, the company not the app, received $75 million in funding
from a consortium led by Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers. It is one of the
top Silicon Valley venture capital firms and has been an early investor in such
amazing companies as Google, Amazon, Sun Microsystems, Netscape, America
Online, Electronic Arts, Symantec, and many more. The firm picks winners and
has just placed Sound Hound and its apps on the Launch pad for liftoff to
business stardom. At the end of the article, the founder says the money will
be used to bring the app to more regions of the world and to fully support
third party developers.

Houndify, allowing its technology to be offered anywhere. Hound was the product
of 10 years of development.

With Houndify, SoundHound aims to put its speech recognition and
language-understanding technology into any device regardless of platform. The
startup aims to be the computational ears and brains for the Internet of Things
era. So far, more than 20,000 developers have registered to use Houndify,
including Nvidia, Sharp and Samsung.

“The demand for our Houndify platform is massive, and some of that is
contributed by the awareness Amazon created,” said Mr. Mohajer. “The adoption
was extraordinary.”

Timing matters. When Mr. Mohajer started SoundHound in 2005, the smartphone was
still a twinkle in the eye of Steve Jobs and yet to become the sophisticated
pocket computer of today, but his long-term vision anticipated that. It also
would require modern cloud data servers and high-speed mobile connectivity. But
he also figured there was ample room for improvement in language understanding
and to offer products with true AI wizardry.

Despite long-term ambitions to build a smarter pocket assistant, Mr.
Mohajer focused on music recognition, pioneered by Shazam Inc. But the big
opportunity was advancing natural-language processing beyond the status quo for
better answers to questions. SoundHound says its research has allowed it to
leapfrog rivals on speed and accuracy.

“The understanding and how it can enable it for devices, I view this as the
next major big thing in computing,” said Larry Marcus, managing director at
Walden Venture Capital, of SoundHound’s technology.

Amazon and Google have touched off an AI battle for the minds and wallets of
consumers. Amazon’s Echo device was followed by Google’s Home, offering
competing wireless speakers that respond to voice commands. SoundHound aims to
be the technology powering big businesses that don’t want to miss the voice
wave. It also promises them ownership of their data and brand.

Businesses are saying, “How are we going to be impacted by voice and speech.
Are we vulnerable if somebody asks these questions and the voice isn’t us?”
said Mr. Marcus. “That’s where this is sitting.”

This article was in yesterday’s Wall Street Journal. For those
outside the United States wanting the Hound app, it looks like your
dream will come true soon. Sound Hound, the company not the app,
received $75 million in funding from a consortium led by Kleiner
Perkins Caufield & Byers. It is one of the top Silicon Valley venture
capital firms and has been an early investor in such amazing companies
as Google, Amazon, Sun Microsystems, Netscape, America Online,
Electronic Arts, Symantec, and many more. The firm picks winners and
has just placed Sound Hound and its apps on the Launch pad for liftoff

money will be used to bring the app to more regions of the world and
to fully support third party developers.

A decade in, you’d think Keyvan Mohajer was building a NASA rocket to the moon.

His ambitions run high. Mr. Mohajer, founder and chief executive of
SoundHound Inc., is aiming to blast off his voice-search technology
world-wide and outmaneuver Google, Apple, Amazon and Microsoft in
artificial intelligence bragging rights.

Santa Clara, Calif.-based SoundHound on Tuesday landed $75 million in
funding. SoundHound last year launched on iOS and Android its service
Hound, a voice assistant that aims to outwit the likes of Siri and
others. Next it launched Houndify, allowing its technology to be
offered anywhere. Hound was the product of 10 years of development.

With Houndify, SoundHound aims to put its speech recognition and

are good at recognizing speech but often vexing when it comes to
providing useful responses, like good ears with bad brains.

“There’s still frustration. The speech recognition with Google and
Siri is really amazingly good. The part that’s less good is the
natural language understanding,” said Christopher Manning, a professor
of linguistics and computer science in the Natural Language Processing

Previous investors include Global Catalyst Partners, Walden Venture

I don't think screen bright ness will do this especially since she already said
the phone shows the same time for standby and usage. There is something that
got hung up and prevents the phone from going to sleep properly and I think her

If not, try that for a day and check the usage again.

Hello Sieghard, and list,

Now ok, this would make sense to me, as to why I am only seeing my
subscriptions that I stopped. They were Tune-in premium, and Hulu.
I honestly get confused as to which subscriptions go through ITunes, or actual
sites. So I thought that sense Hulu was payed for that way, then so was
Netflix. But obviously not, and the more I think about this, it makes sense.

Thank you for the clarification.

Hello everyone,

I went in to settings, and to ITunes and Apps. Then I entered on my ID.
Once i did this, I saw a subscriptions link. So of course, I entered on it.
However, all I see are my subscriptions I let expire, or no longer wanted. I
can't seem to see anything else.
Perhaps I am looking in the wrong spot?
Could someone please help me out?

Thank you,

Re: Clock App Recommendation

I am using one free app: chime by privineo softwares, and another
recently started using it and I am loving it, that is Grand father
chime clock. Later one has capacity to adjust its volume independently

So, I'm still having this issue even after switching the apps off. I
left my phone on but didn't use it for about four hours and it lost 20
percent of its battery. It's only about three months old.

If not, try that for a day and check the usage again.

Hi all,

I just purchased my first bluetooth keyboard for the iPhone. It’s a logitech
K380 compact keyboard. It’s the size of a laptop keyboard. The description says
it fully supports iOS. I thought control plus option were the VO keys to
perform various tasks. All I get is a bonk when I try to use these keys with an
arrow or anything else. Am I doing something wrong? I have a Mac and I am very
familiar with using VO keys. I’d appreciate any info or help.

Thanks so much,
Christina

Re: Text editing/word processing

2017-02-01 Thread Richard Turner

yes, if you use Writer's proof reading function. It is part of the learning
curve, but I found it easy to get used to. Plus, the spell check allows you to
find misspelled words and correct one, then go to the next in context, etc. I
think it is the best app for editing.
There is a good article on Writer in the February AppleVis newsletter.

Bring up the playlist on your iPhone. Tap the edit button in the upper right
corner of the screen then go down to the song you want to delete, do the single
finger flick up and when the phone says delete double tap. That will delete the
song from the playlist without deleting it from your library.

I hope this helps.

Re: Clock App Recommendation

2017-02-01 Thread Appleman
Hi,
I can definitely attest to your observation that Qoo is no longer available
in the app store. I tried it a few years ago but found I had to restart the app
as it stopped speaking after 12 hours. I had mine announcing the time every 15
minutes.
I am now using Voiceover Clock, which is a free download. It’s very easy to
use and set up.
  Hope this helps.

RE: iBooks on the PC

2017-02-01 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I don't think so, iBooks have DRM protection although I believe there are
applications out there which can break this and convert them to ePub or other
formats. You would have to Google this as Cara and Mark don't permit discussing
how to do this.

Sieghard

Hi all,
I have a question about iBooks.
I've downloaded few books from the iTunes, but I'm wondering if there is any
way to read those books on my PC, in txt or any other format...

I don't, and when I checked the app switcher it showed it as active
 for some reason.

RE: Bizarre Battery Issue

2017-02-01 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Well, then I guess it's time for a complete restore and to set up the phone as
a new phone, if you restore a backup there is a good chance whatever causes
this will return. At least I would first set it up as a new phone, put back
only the most important apps and keep an eye on battery performance for 2 or 3
days. If everything is good you could try and rstore your backup and if the
problem returns you then know for sure that something got messed up, at that
point you have to restore one last time, set up as a new phone again and start
from scratch.

Sieghard
