RE: Office Lens, New App

2017-04-21 Thread Alan Lemly
Tom,

To test Office Lens with its reproduction of a scanned form, I went to the IRS
website and pulled up a 1040EZ tax form and filled in a few of the blanks,
printed it, and then scanned it with Office Lens in document mode. I uploaded
it to my Microsoft Word app and saved it to Dropbox. A 1040EZ form is fairly
involved with respect to formatting because it contains a lot of lines and
blanks in a tabular format. I was quite impressed with the formatting of the
scanned form by Office Lens and I would think it could be turned into a form
that could be filled in by others using the tools available within Microsoft
Word.

I hope this helps.

Hi,

I installed Office Lens on my phone quite some time ago but never really paid
much attention to it until I read the information about it in Tidbits. At first
I wasn't thrilled about having to set up a Microsoft account as it was kind of
a pain in the neck to do, but once that was done everything went smoothly. I
have several students who want a scanning app but can't afford KNFB Reader's
hefty price tag, so I showed Office Lens to them and they were favorably
impressed. At first I scanned a single-page document and exported it into
Immersive Reader and let Immersive Reader play it back. Frankly, the defaukt
voice in Immersive Reader sounded a little garbled to my ears and I found that
reading the document with VoiceOver while in Immersive Reader was cleaner and
crisper. Though I didn't test this, I would imagine that I'd be able to use the
VO rotor to navigate by character, word, line and so on and I doubt that
Immersive Reader's playback would let me do that.

Yesterday afternoon I did a second demo for a couple of students and that time
I scanned a multiple-page document. To do that, you do the first page, then
after the image is processed, you tap the Camera button, take your next shot,
let Office Lens process the second picture, then repeat that procedure until
all your pages have been scanned and processed. Tap Save All, then all of your
document images are presumably merged and available as a single document which
can be exported to whatever choices are available. Again, I dumped them into
Immersive Reader and let VO read. The results were clean as a whistle and
reading was seamless. Later on I talked with one of my coworkers who also uses
Office Lens and he agrees with me that it's a very good app and you sure can't
beat the price. Granted it's not as simple to use as KNFB Reader and it's
certainly easier to use than Prizmo, so for me, it's a keeper.

I have a question for the person who mentioned that Office Lens preserves or at
least approximates the document formatting. In the past, I've found that
PC-based packages like Open Book and Kurzweil 1000 will "mangle" forms of
various sorts, absolutely destroying their formatting and making them unusable
for anything except determining what information is asked for in the form. Is
it possible to scan something like a job application, then export it into Word
so that a blind person could then fill it out independently on a computer,
print it out and submit it? It would be fabulous if such a scenario is possible.

Tom

Subject: Enquiry about Apple Magic Keyboard

Evening everyone.

I am writing in with an enquiry on the Apple magic keyboard which I am
looking into purchasing as early as next week.

Is it true that when pairing to your iOS device or Apple TV, there is no
pairing code to enter? In other words, it just pairs automatically? This is
what iMore claims anyway after doing a google search for "Magic Keyboard
iOS" without quotes. The manual obtained from the Apple support website only
documents how to use it with a mac, and that sounds cool as well, but my
main goal is to use it with my iOS devices.

Any responses greatly appreciated. Thank you very much.

Hi,
Not necessarily.
If the survey wasn't designed well to begin with, then no, you should not have
been able to fill it out.

If you can't do it on the iPhone, you could try a computer, but my guess is
that it wouldn't work much better.

obvious is should I have been able to do that survey using my iPhone and
voiceover menus just as easily as I could've done it may be using IE on a

If the Survey Monkey is setup right, it can be accessible.
Survey Gizmo is also very good, but the person designing the survey needs to
pay attention to the labels, etc.
I'm not a programmer, but our office uses Survey Gizmo.

I was wondering, can an Android phone, and an iPhone work together with

I know that the Androids have some games that the iPhones have, and you
can play people no matter the type of phone.

For instance, Dice World.

But say you wanted to share your location, or have something such as
find your friends?

Is this even possible?

I would like to be able to have something like this, between a friend of
mine who obviously has an android phone, and myself. I doubt it's
possible. But I figured it couldn't hurt to ask.

I realize that if something like this does exist, we would both have to
download the App.

And if it does exist, how accessible might it be for me?

Thank you,

Accessible web surveys

2017-04-21 Thread Deidre Muccio
Do any of you sophisticated programmers or techs know of a Web survey format
that is fully accessible? I try to take a local library survey that was done on
monkey and though the checkboxes could be toggled with a single finger double
tap once the rotor was turn to form fields, the edit fields would not come
alive and I kept getting flip from one question to another. Then there were
headings that seem to be double headings which made no sense at all whatsoever.
Just cumbersome and wordy. The library reference people that deal with
accessibility issues asked if I knew of a Web survey format that was fully
accessible that they could look into. Does anyone have a recommendation?

RE: adding contacts - is this a vo bug?

2017-04-21 Thread Richard Turner
I have not had any of these issues.
I just added a contact on my iPhone 6S. I double tapped on Add Phone, changed
the label to Mobile, flicked right and I was in the text field to enter the
number.
Then, I went up and entered the first and last name.
Also iOS 10.3.1.

I’ve done it by entering the name first, then going to Add phone, etc.

I wish I had an answer for you. But we are having problems with Contacts as
well. I think it is a voiceover issue because everything seems to work OK
without voiceover. Not exactly the same problem you're having but along the
same lines. In putting things into edit field does not seem to work. When you
go back out of the program and then back into it, then things seem to work OK.
It's sort of reminds me of a screen refreshing issue. But that's not the same
issues you're having. Very interesting to know though.

Go into contacts and add a new one. Set name and first name and then when you
want to put in the phone number, push the label button phone to, for example
change the label to mobile number. If you do that and double tab, you land in
the field company in which you culd type the name of a company for which the
contact is possibly working. This is indeed not correct.
If you go on flicking right you come into the right field to type the mobile
phone number.
I use ios10.3.1 on an iphone 5s 64 gb.

Hi all,
Well, it's time to upgrade the roomba. I know there has been discussion on this
subject, but which is the best one to get and had the most usable app? Any help
on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks much.

Re: Office Lens, New App

2017-04-21 Thread Tom Lange
Hi,
I installed Office Lens on my phone quite some time ago but never really paid
much attention to it until I read the information about it in Tidbits. At first
I wasn't thrilled about having to set up a Microsoft account as it was kind of
a pain in the neck to do, but once that was done everything went smoothly. I
have several students who want a scanning app but can't afford KNFB Reader's
hefty price tag, so I showed Office Lens to them and they were favorably

Tom
