RE: Mark's New Apple Watch: My First Favorite New App for WatchOS

2017-07-06 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Ed,

This is great info; thank you for sharing.

I truly hope that other VoiceOver watch owners will post their favorite watch
apps/Complications as so many of us will find it helpful.

As for me, the only two apps I’ve installed on my watch, so far, is the
aforementioned Fit Port dashboard app/Complication and the Nike+ app.

The Nike+ app leave much to be desired in iOS but is somewhat more useful and
accessible on WatchOS. Be that as it may, I cannot recommend Nike+ to
VoiceOver users, at this time. But for the fact that I have enough vision to
see various aspects of the Apple Watch display, I don’t think I’d be able to
use it without first having some sighted assistance.

Subject: Re: Mark's New Apple Watch: My First Favorite New App for WatchOS

Hello Mark and all,

Thanks Mark and you are welcome for the help. I also wanted to let people know
about some Apple Watch apps that I have found useful:

1. ESPN - The ESPN app lives on my watch face with it’s complication for the
majority of the summer as I am a very big Atlanta Braves fan, and I like to
know what time the next game is scheduled, and what the score of the current
game is when they are playing. This complication is great, the iPhone
application has a ton of improvement that could be done. But in typical ESPN
fashion they don’t seem to want to fix the unlabeled buttons to VO users. The
Apple Watch is much more accessible and you can see stories and scores in the
limited functionality it offers.

2. Mac ID - This app allows me to remotely lock my MacBook Pro 15 from across
the room, or as I have it set via proximity. This means that I can get up from
my desk and walk away from the computer and it will lock when I get about two
feet away from it. You do how ever have to install the Mac ID client on your
Mac, and have to download it from the companies website.

3. FitPort - As Mark said in the previous post this app will pull the step
count for the day from your Apple motion sensor and store the results in the
Health app, and FitPort pulls the step count. It is easy and simple to use.

4. DexCom G5 Mobile - This is probably the most used app on my Apple Watch and
iPhone. This app connects via bluetooth to a wireless transmitter that is
connected to a sensor that is located on my abdomen. This sensor and
transmitter will send my blood sugar to my iPhone and Apple Watch every 5
minutes. It will also tell me if my blood sugar is rising or dropping to
quickly, so that I can take the appropriate actions and make corrections when
needed.

5. DarkSky Weather - I love the amount of information DarkSky shows on the
Apple Watch app. It is simple and very easy to understand and use.

6. Controller for Bose SoundTouch System - This is a very simple application.
You must have the Bose SoundTouch system speakers for this to work. This app on
both the iPhone and Apple Watch allow me to switch between my 6 favorite
stations I have set with the Bose SoundTouch app. The interface is simply
easier to use with VO, and is much less cluttered.

7. MLB @Bat app - This app used to be my goto app for Baseball scores and the
complication on the Apple Watch, but the last couple of updates have made the
app on the Watch very slow to load, and the complication doesn’t seem to update
very quickly or often.

I hope this helps.

Be that as it may, I have, thustly, found the experience immensely
refreshing and rewarding.

So, now that I have the watch teak the way I want it, for the time being, I
can tell you that I am most delighted with my first WatchOS app.

The app is called FitPort.

My favorite aspect of this simple health statistics dashboard is the fact
that, when installed on WatchOS, it also installs a Complication that allows
one to easily see the number of steps taken, from directly in the watch
face. It's absolutely brilliant.

So, I am currently using the Modular watch-face with the FitPort
Complication located in the center middle area of the watch face.

Now, with the turn of the wheel on the side of the watch, I cannot remember
its name, I can quickly and conveniently hear the number of steps I've taken
so far, in a day.

The best part is that this number is perfectly synchronized with the Health
app on iPhone just as WatchOS and iOS sync

I had to go to the music app and hit connect or some such and it showed me
all my subscriptions. This has been a difficult month for me financially due
to a few medical bills so I had to temporarily let go some things. I still

Now go down to iTunes and App Store. Then double tap on Apple ID. Now double

Richard, or should that be Dr. Johnson?

I am replying here on list for two reasons: 1. I bow to your judgement, but
as we are drawing toward the end of this list compilation, some people might
find it useful for any last nuggets of VO gold!? I know that I have learnt many
good tips this way, from this list.

2. A gesture, virtually, never mentioned, is the "look around" use of the
screen. By this I mean, just touch the screen anywhere, move your finger around
to see what you can find on the screen and, so long as you don't pick it up
again, you won't be doing anything, changing anything or do any harm. I have
shown my phone to potential VO/iPhone users, and their greatest fear is always,
fear of activating something that will mess up my settings etc.

Please forgive me if I missed this on your magnum opus, but I am up to my
eyes in riced cauliflower right now, while reading a book (with iLike2Read Pro)
and pondering upon different gestures at the same time, a true multitasker me!

So, line up the four fingers along the edge of the screen say with your index

Re: Mark's New Apple Watch: My First Favorite New App for WatchOS

2017-07-06 Thread Ed Worrell

I hope this helps.

ahh ha, but if Galileo lives up to its claims, we should get enough

accuracy from it. what's more, Galileo is up and running and has been

I would second, or third, the votes for BlindSquare. Though it is not
specifically an app to give direction from Point A to Point B, you can
use BlindSquare to get information about your environment, in
conjunction with Apple/Google Maps to get directions, or to look up
other information like menus from many restaurants. Also, it is
updated fairly often with fixes and new features. I recall seeing in
the last update that their Open Street Map data was updated, whatever
that means. If you want something more "blindness specific" which will
tell you exactly where the door of a business is locate relative to
you, then go for one of the other more expensive apps. BlindSquare
works for me and suits my purposes.

Another consideration is where in the world you are located. You do not
say
and this is an important consideration for anyone asking for app
recommendations. Nearby Explorer is only currently available in North
America while the other two have maps for other parts of the world. Also,
you do not say if you need the app in a language other than English.
Nearby
explorer supports only English while Blind Square supports more than 20
languages. English though is an international language spoken throughout
the world by educated peple.

hi Andreya,
While you are correct, from everything I have read, the accuracy is still much
greater than the other alternatives. I mean, as we speak, now!

I believe it runs on the Sanson galaxy, but I'm open to correction here, there
might not even be such a thing as a Sampson galaxy, I don't know. however, this
might be the very thing that will push me onto the android platform.

I believe the support for Seeing Eye may be better (in that you can

Mark's New Apple Watch: My First Favorite New App for WatchOS

2017-07-06 Thread M. Taylor
Hello All,

Thank you, most kindly, for taking an interest in my new Apple Watch. I
must say that the learning curve is quite steep, given that one has to
learn, essentially , both a new paradigm in terms of VoiceOver navigation.

The best part is that this number is perfectly synchronized with the Health
app on iPhone just as WatchOS and iOS sync the Activity data.

Very, very impressive.

The FitPort app cost $2.99 in the US App Store. I have posted a very
positive review in the App Store on FitPort's behalf and I have mentioned
them in a Tweet at @FitPort.

Special thanks to Ed for pointing me to this amazing simple and easy-to-use
app.

Until Next Time,

Mark
