A couple of iPhone questions

2017-10-17 Thread Simon Wong
Hi everyone! Hope you all are doing well, I have a couple of iPhone questions
which I hope somebody can answer, when you put a appointment or schedule
something in your calendar, does it give you any notification or sound when
it's time to remind you? When I tried to put something in my calendar, I got no
sound or notification to let me know that there was something scheduled there.
Also does anybody know if Chromecast can be used by people who are blind or
visually impaired?

Hi,
Go into the Calendar settings.
You can set a default alert time.

Also, under the Sounds settings you can select a specific alert tone if the
default tone isn't what you want.

HTH,
Richard

Hi everyone! Hope you all are doing well, I have a couple of iPhone questions
which I hope somebody can answer, when you put a appointment or schedule
something in your calendar, does it give you any notification or sound when
it's time to remind you? When I tried to put something in my calendar, I got no
sound or notification to let me know that there was something scheduled there.
Also does anybody know if Chromecast can be used by people who are blind or

Widgets are simply providing information on the Today screen and you can
customize them, you can add things like notifications, calendar, my
Netatmo Weather Station has a widget which shows a quick summary of
temperatures, humidity of all modules, my bank app has a widget where you
can enable a so-called quick balance view from in the app, if you do then
you can quickly see your account balances on the Today screen, there is a
Now Playing widget, one for battery and so on. You can just go to the
Today screen and explore them, play around with them you can always change
it again if you don’t like what you are showing or not showing.

In the calendar you can go and set alarms to notify you at a time such as two
hours before the appointment. If you are getting siri to put appointments in
the calendar, you still have to go back in the calendar and set up the alarms
to remind you. Hope that helps.

Sonos app does not play downloaded apple music

2017-10-17 Thread Fanus
Hello list
I have quite a lot of music which I downloaded from the apple music service but
when I ask the sonos app to update my index it omits that music. Is this how it
works or is there a way to include it? If so, its quite a pity because I can
play that music via the apple extreme to my hifi but not to the sonos play3.

Force Restart, enter recovery, and DFU mode

2017-10-17 Thread 'Ming' via VIPhone
hi! all!
I found that if you wanna Force Restart, enter recovery, and DFU mode
and for someone who are blind and visually impaired. they don't know that what
happen or waht is the status and don't know how or when to start the next step.
you can watch the following video to know more:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a70jiFqMGX0
my suggestion is:
shall we ask apple to make the sounds to tell people that: it time to do the
next step.

or even have the turn on and turn off sounds as well?

best regards,

I just bought an app and tried to find the purchased ones on my hubby’s phone

purchased items, though. I’ve looked in the app store and in i tunes. what am
I missing?

Thanks!

Re: new blood glucose sensor

2017-10-17 Thread Caitlyn Furness
Hi,
I don’t know about the particular device your client is talking about, but I
have an accessable solution.

I am also a type I diabetic, and am using the Dexcom g5 continuous glucose
moniter to moniter my sugar levels. there is a very small sensor which you put
under your skin, and change weekly. A transmitter snaps to the tip of the
sensor and send the results to an app on the i phone. The i phone app is
totally accessable, and this company is wonderful to work with. You can find
the app on the app store by searching for “dexcom”. You want the one for the
g5. the phone number for Dexcom is 1-844-832-1810 for sales and customre
support.

HTH,
Caitlyn

Apple Watch VoiceOver gestures?

2017-10-17 Thread Harry Bell
I'm a long time user of VoiceOver on iPhone and Ipad. I now have an apple watch
series 3 and am really struggling to activate e. g. The top left complication
on the Siri watch face. I can locate the complication icon with my finger and
VoiceOver reads out its name but double tapping does not work to activate it.
I've tried having heart rate at top left or Breathe and for both double tapping
just sends the focus elsewhere on the screen rather than activating heart rate
or Breathe. Is there some special technique or is VoiceOver not working as well
on the Watch as on iPhone?
Thanks
Harry

I am also a type I diabetic, and am using the Dexcom g5 continuous glucose

under your skin, and change weekly. A transmitter snaps to the tip of the
sensor and send the results to an app on the i phone. The i phone app is
totally accessable, and this company is wonderful to work with. You can find
the app on the app store by searching for “dexcom”. You want the one for the

I don't have visual voice mail, either, and don't have any issues on my 6S
Plus. When I double tap on the voice mail tab it used to directly dial
in/connect, now there is a button on the screen that says "Call Voice Mail".
After I double tap it, I am connected to my voice mail system and from here on
it's just like a phone call.
If I move the phone away from my ear it switches to speaker, if I have a voice
mail I dial 1 to listen to it, I think it's 7 to delete it afterwards etc.
When I'm done I just do a two-finger double tap to hang up the call, I am now
back still on the voice mail tab with the "Call Voice Mail" button on the
screen and I can then go back to my Favourites, Recents, Contacts or Keypad tab.
If you see transcription of voice mail and something that looks like an Inbox
with your messages/voice mails listed then you have visual voice mail and since
I usually pick up my phone and maybe get a voice mail once a month I don't
bother paying the $2/month extra which my current provider charges for visual
voice mail.

Hi Sandy,

I just tried CamFind on some clothes, and it frequently got the colors wrong.
It would be nice to have pictures on the clothes identified, but if you take
the trouble to spread the clothes on a flat surface before using Examine
Clothes, I find it gets the colors much more accurately.

hi,
Comparing this app with CamFind I find canfind still is better! for example, if
there is a crease in the fabric, this app interprets that as stripes, whereas,
camfind does not. camfined would also describe things such as, flowers,
butterflies, and background colour, which is very useful and much more
descriptive. however, camfind does need to use the web, not sure about this app
though…

In the explanation that is read when you first open the app and which you can
also review with Voiceover it says that after you tap on “Examine” you have
the Take Picture button at the bottom in the middle just as with the camera
app. It further says that there is a “Use Picture” button to the right of that
(at the bottom right) and a “retake” button to the left of
Take Picture (at the bottom left of the screen).

The app only examines the picture and speaks the result after you tap the “Use
Picture” button.

This is the same in the iDentifi app and for blind users I find it somewhat
superfluous. It is OK for sighted users who can see what the picture you just
took looks like and in case it is no good they can tap on retake, but for a
blind user we have to tap on Use Picture anyways in order to hear if the result
makes sense.

Having said all that I have done two tests and I am very impressed with the
results, indeed better than what the Colorino would give since you have to hold
it directly against the material so it would give you only what it sees in
front of the dime-sized opening. You can put it in different places on the
shirt or whatever you are trying to identify, but it would have a difficult
time to say if it was two or three colours in a striped or checkered pattern.

Here is what I showed to the Examine Clothes app:

dark blue T-Shirt which it identified correctly as “Dark Blue, plain”.

A short-sleeved button-up shirt. The app said “light greybackground and dark
grey and dull green checker”.

The word “checker” is misspelled as “ckecker”, but apart from that the colours
were dead on, I asked my wife and she first said it’s a grey and green
checkered shirt, when I asked about light and dark grey she said yes, it was
mainly light grey with dark grey and green checkering.

I think I’ll contact the developer and point out the misspelling, sounds like
he or she is japanese and you can tell in other areas where it is obvious the
dev is not a native english speaker, but also I want to say Thanks and
encourage them to maybe submit an update even if it just corrects some spelling
mistakes, the app hasn’t been updated in a year and a half which means not
update after iOS 10 came out.

For now this app is definitely a keeper and the first colour identifier which
seems to work well although I guess it really is a clothes identifier, have not
tried it on let’s say a wall or other things.

Sieghard

I’ve downloaded this app.

When I click on take picture my phone doesn’t speak anything back.

Why is it not telling me the color of my t-shire?

It just says re-take or use photo button.

When I was running iOS 11.0.2, there were a few times when I
couldn't clear the notifications on my 6S. The clear
notifications button was there, but I couldn't get the
confirmation button to appear. However, a reboot, meaning
turning the iPhone off and then back on, then let me clear them
without a problem. I haven't yet had that problem with iOS
11.0.3.

Chrome Cast [was "Re: A couple of iPhone questions"]

2017-10-17 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I don't think I've used Chrome Cast on an iPhone, but it is accessible
from Android, and I believe I've also used it from a browser, like
Chrome. I don't see why it woudln't be accessible with an iPhone.

Basically, you buy a Chrome Cast device which you add to your wifi
network and plug into the audio input of a device, such as to a home
theater system with HDMI or powered external speakers with a 3MM jack.
Now you find an app that supports Chrome Cast and double tap the cast
button and choose your destination. Like I said, I do this all of the
time from my Android smart phone.

upgrade instructions, please tell me if I'm missing anything!

2017-10-17 Thread Paul Ferrara
We’re upgrading phones Thursday; it’s my understanding I can do the following:

Back up both phones to iCloud, insuring all options that matter are turned on.
Get new phones and set up with that iCloud backup.
Erase other phones at some point, not sure when.
All apps, photos, mail, etc. will appear on new phones.
As for settings, what is that new iOS 11 feature that lets you import/move old
settings to a new phone?
Am I missing any steps or have any out of order?

Thank you.

Paul

Suppose you accidentally moved an app into a folder, how would you get it out

Re: Apps and Folders

2017-10-17 Thread Julian
Hi Andy,

While in the folder, you need to put focus on the app and then activate the
editing mode. Which in the current version of iOS 11 means, double tap and
holding the app to start the editing mode, then you flick up or down till you
hear drag, and follow the normal procedure that you would use to move an app
from one place to another.

But if I hit the home button to leave the folder that the app is in, that would
close the editing session, wouldn't it?

the other way to close the folder is the two finger scrub gesture. That
preserves the editing mode.

Mesh router thoughts

2017-10-17 Thread Cristóbal
Hello list,

Was looking for some feedback. I’m currently on the Spectrum 200 MB internet
plan with a Motorola Surfboard 6190 with a TP-Link Archer C-9 AC 1900
router. Both the modem and router are mine.

In general, my internet is fine, but I live in a 3400 square foot two story
house with a lot of connected devices. The usual, desktops, laptops, smart
TVs, iPads/iPhones, a few fire sticks Apple TVs, etc.

I’m noticing that in certain parts of the house, coverage isn’t as reliable
as I’d like it considering what I’m paying for and the equipment I’ve got. I
know having so many connected devices can play a roll, but there’s a second
master bedroom where a family member lives and the garage where I work out
for example where it’s an issue. The Ring Video Pro at times can drop as
well which is certainly annoying.

I’ve been thinking of getting set up with a mesh router and was curious to
know if others have a similar set up and whether they noticed any
significant improvement over all? I’ve already got one wifi range extender
downstairs and at this point, if I start to consider getting more for this
and that area, a $300 mesh router set up may be a reasonable alternative if
all the claims are true.

I’d have to imagine that on some level, mesh routers would work like a
traditional wifi router with the interface and whatnot, but again, I’d like
to know if the coverage hype is indeed warranted.

Thanks,
