3 ways your iPhone's Mail app just got better - CNET

2017-10-18 Thread M. Taylor
CNET How To - Friday, October 13, 2017 at 12:09 PM
3 ways your iPhone's Mail app just got better - CNET
It's a toss-up between Mail and Messages for the app I use most on my iPhone
($849.00 at Apple). And maybe Instagram. (And, OK, the MLB.com At Bat app
during the summer months.) But by and large, it's email and texting that I
do most regularly on my phone. The Messages app got a few new features with
iOS 11, and Apple didn't ignore the Mail app. iOS 11 has added a few new
features to it, too.
Drag and drop
The difficulty moving your cursor around and highlighting on a touchscreen
is why I mostly just read emails on my iPhone and wait until I get back to
my MacBook ($1,269.00 at Amazon.com) for composing any messages or replies
longer than a couple words. With iOS 11, Apple has added the ability to drag
and drop, which is more useful for multitasking on an iPad but adds a new
way to move text and images around in the Mail app.
When you highlight a sentence and then long-press it -- it'll pop out a bit,
at which point you can drag it to another spot and drop it. You can also
long-press on a single word -- without needing to highlight it first -- and
it'll pop out so you can drag and drop it. I ran into some trouble, however,
when I tried to drag and drop a sentence I highlighted -- sometimes I would
grab the entire sentence and other times I would grab only the single word
that happened to be below my finger.
You can also long-press on a image you inserted in an email and drag and
drop it to a new spot in your message. I also found this to be difficult,
too, especially if the image in question is in portrait orientation where
it's super-tall on your small phone screen, leaving you little room to
operate.
Perhaps I'll get better at dragging and dropping with practice.
via GIPHY
Insert drawings
Long-press on on an email and you'll notice a new option if you tap all the
way to the right on the menu banner: Insert Drawing. This option lets you
scribble your ideas and insert them into an email. Because sometimes it's
better to jot down an idea than explain it in words.
 Screenshot by Matt Elliott/CNET
Automatically collapse read threads
It's easy to lose your place in a long email thread when attempting to
navigate it on your phone. With iOS 11, Apple has added a new option in
Mail's preferences that helps you keep your place. It's called Collapse Read
Messages and it's enabled by default. You can find it by going to Settings >
Mail and scrolling down to the Threading section. With it enabled, all of
the messages in the thread that you've already read will be collapsed so
when you open a thread, you'll be able to easily read the new, unread
messages that await.

iOS 11.0.3 Reminders: Bugs, Bugs, Bugs!

2017-10-18 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Everyone,

I am a huge fan of the iOS 10.x Reminders app. I don't know how I would get
along without it, these days. I use it for everything including grocery
lists, location-based notification, etc.

I was just attempting to create and manage reminders on a friend's iPhone 7
Plus with VoiceOver enabled.

Wow! What a disappointment. With VoiceOver enabled, I was unable to
perform many of the basic functions integral to the Reminders app. I kept
having to disable VoiceOver in order to access various lists and, even to
edit the details of individual reminders.

I do not recall seeing any on-list threads discussing all of the bugs in the
iOS 11 Reminders app. Were there any?

Has anyone else experienced this?

I can only hope that the developers have addressed these issues in iOS 11.1;
otherwise, I am staying with iOS 10 until such time as they do.

Mark

Candy,

Thanks for these instructions. I was trying to open a file created with Notepad
on my computer in the Notes app mainly just for reading. It doesn't work very
well for that but I'll keep your directions for going through Dropbox if I want
to edit a txt file in the future.

This is the #1 reason I do not play Blindfold games; the player loses coins
when trying to trouble shoot what may be a bug in a game.

I realize time is put into developing the Blindfold games. I have no problem
paying for a game that the developer gets rid of bugs within a game in a timely
manner. In my opinion, to purchase unlimited game play for most of the
Blindfold games is Way over priced!

Re: Notes in iOS 11?

2017-10-18 Thread Candy Lowe
Alan, I am not sure if I am understanding your question correctly, I just tried
what I think you were trying to do. I opened a file in dropbox on my phone that
was originally created on notepad on my computer.
when I find the file that I am looking for, I double tap on it. Then says edit
with. Then VoiceOver said text field is editing. I wrote something at the
bottom of the file and then on the right hand top of the phone that was a save
button. I saved it and it worked fine. If I am not understanding you correctly,
let me know and we’ll try again.
in other words, you open the file in your dropbox app. As long as it is a text
file it should be able to be edited. Let me know.

Re: where are previous app purchases?

2017-10-18 Thread Alan Lemly
Caitlyn,

This thread you started now has 25 messages in it yet it seems as if you still
aren't processing the answers even though Richard Turner gave a direct,
specific answer at the beginning.

Open the apps store, from the bottomline menu, pick either today, games, or
apps and double tap. On the screen that opens, double tap my account in the
upper right corner. Swipe right until you hear purchased and double tap. All
your purchased apps will be listed.

RE: Notes in iOS 11?

2017-10-18 Thread Alan Lemly
Richard,

Many thanks. It is circuitous and since I've already created the note and am
pretty much just using my iPhone to read through it, using the Dropbox app to
do so is the easiest thing to do. It reads txt files just fine. I've been
wanting to use the Notes app more but apparently, it works best with notes
created within it and not as an app for working with notes created elsewhere.

Alan,

It is a fairly circuitous route, but from the dropbox app, double tap on the
file.

Double tap on share. Flick right until you cannot go any farther and you will
find an unlabeled button, double tap.

Then, flick right passed the first mention of notes, to the open in button and
double tap.

Then, flick right until you get to add to notes and double tap.

Now, you will find yourself in the note in the Notes app.

If someone has a better way, please chime in.

Richard

I'd welcome specific instructions on how to access such text files with the

Re: T9 keyboard

2017-10-18 Thread Michael Maslo

 Hello

There are no real gestures per say. There are three finger gestures.three
finger down and up which go through the choices of words available. If you ever
used the old fashion t9 keyboard on the old phones it is based upon that. Once
you get used of it you would like it a lot. I wish I could explain it better.
My suggestion is to try it for yourself and see for yourself. Oct 18,

RE: Chrome Cast [was "Re: A couple of iPhone questions"]

2017-10-18 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
The Chromecast don't have any memory, they are strictly streaming devices but
as Christopher pointed out, they work differewntly from Airplay, for example,
since once you start streaming via your Chromecast it takes over that stream.
For example, if you have a regular Chromecast or a 4K capable Chromecast Ultra
connected to your TV and you have Netflix on your iPhone, you can pick a movie
or show in the app on your phone, send it to the Chromecast and at that point
the Chromecast which is of course connected to your WiFi streams the content
and you could actually completely turn off your iPhone and the movie would
still continue to play/stream.
You can not save any music or other media to a Chromecast.

I am fascinated! How much can you get onchrome cast in terms of memory, or do
they vary? At that price, most people can afford them! Do they sound really
good through big speakers? am I right to assume that the only way to put music
onto a chrome cast is in fact to send it across Wi-Fi? Now I will leave you in
peace! Good night and thanks!Carol P Sent from my iPhone using MBraille

The ChromeCast is a small flat disk that fits in the palm of your hand. I'm
guessing it's a bit larger in diameter but a bit thinner then an Oreo cookie.
It has a micro-USB connection for power, connects to your wifi and has either a
3MM or HDMI connection.

I have a ChromeCast Audio which has the 3MM audio jack on it. You'd connect it
to a pair of audio speakers or anything else that takes audio input. It looks
like it costs $35, but I'm pretty sure I got it on sale for $25 last Christmas.

There's the original ChromeCast which has an HDMI connector on it. I don't have
this device, but it looks like it also costs $35.

Finally, there's the ChromeCast Ultra which has an HDMI connector and supports
4K video. I also have one of these hooked to my home theater receiver.

One thing I should have mentioned, is that once you start the streaming to your
ChromeCast device, your iPhone is taken out of the loop and is no longer
needed. This is nice since you're no longer using your smart phone resources.
You can go back into the app your casting though and cancel the casting.

There's an app on Android called Google Home that allows you to control your
ChromeCast devices. It looks like you have the same thing in the App Store at
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/google-home/id680819774?mt=8

When casting from an app, only the audio or video from that app is sent over to
your ChromeCast. Your TTS is not sent over. There is an option in Google Home
to mirror the audio from your smart phone though, and if you use this feature
then all of the audio on your phone is sent over to the ChromeCast including
the TTS.

I am fascinated! How much can you get onchrome cast in terms of memory, or do
they vary? At that price, most people can afford them! Do they sound really
good through big speakers? am I right to assume that the only way to put music
onto a chrome cast is in fact to send it across Wi-Fi? Now I will leave you in
peace! Good night and thanks!Carol P

The ChromeCast is a small flat disk that fits in the palm of your hand. I'm

There is an option in Google Home
to mirror the audio from your smart phone though, and if you use this feature
then all of the audio on your phone is sent over to the ChromeCast including
the TTS.

Hello, and thank you

I was the one who asked and appreciate both responses. Yes, the question does
come down to the app with voiceover. But I figured start with anyone who uses
something and then go from there. Again any information would be greatly
appreciated.

I figure if they make treadmills and scales, they should make elliptical
machines as well with accessible VoiceOver software. At least one would hope

Re: Notes in iOS 11?

2017-10-18 Thread Richard Turner
Alan,
It is a fairly circuitous route, but from the dropbox app, double tap on the

Thanks in advance.

and the FitBit app to do this. I have a FitBit Charge HR, and when I get
on my stationary bike, I can just hit the button on the side of my
Charge HR to let it know I've started an exercise. I hit the button to
let it know I've stopped. It does detect some exercises like walking,
running, riding a bike, but it doesn't automatically recognize when
you're on a stationary bike. If I wanted to, I could go in and edit the
entry that was created when I hit the button on my Charge HR to let it
know that I was on a stationary bike as opposed to some other exercise,
but I typically don't bother to do this. I'm not sure if it integrates
into the Weight Watchers app.

What I like about the Samsung Health app is that I can just hit the
exercise bike option and start, and it'll start counting down my
exercise target duration. I could change this duration or just let it
use the default, which is what I used the last time I was on the
exercise bike. It announces how much time I have left every five
minutes. Since it knows I'm on a stationary bike, it also calculates how
many calories I've burned. Obviously, this isn't exact since it doesn't
know how hard I'm working or what I have the resistance set to, but it's
a nice data point. I can also launch various media apps from the Samsung
Health app if I want to listen to or watch something while I'm peddling.
I mention this since I'm sure there are apps in the App Store that would
also have these features.

Hi,

I have an exercise bike but it is not connectable.  I am thinking I
could still track my exercise by entering the data into an app.  What
apps do any of you use that are accessible for doing this kind of
thing?  Are there any that you use that detect your motion and track
your time/etc while riding  a stationary bike?  Of course I am hoping
for something free but if needed I could pay for one if it isn't too
expensive.

If there are any that will feed the data into Weight Watchers' system
it would be even better.  I know that the Weight Watchers app will
feed it in but it would have to be manually entered into the app
first.  Just trying to avoid as much of this as I can.  Does this mean
I am basically lazy? ;-)) (probably)

Thanks for any help.

Re: Chrome Cast [was "Re: A couple of iPhone questions"]

2017-10-18 Thread Christopher Chaltain
The ChromeCast is a small flat disk that fits in the palm of your hand.
I'm guessing it's a bit larger in diameter but a bit thinner then an
Oreo cookie. It has a micro-USB connection for power, connects to your
wifi and has either a 3MM or HDMI connection.

I have a ChromeCast Audio which has the 3MM audio jack on it. You'd
connect it to a pair of audio speakers or anything else that takes audio
input. It looks like it costs $35, but I'm pretty sure I got it on sale
for $25 last Christmas.

There's the original ChromeCast which has an HDMI connector on it. I
don't have this device, but it looks like it also costs $35.

Finally, there's the ChromeCast Ultra which has an HDMI connector and
supports 4K video. I also have one of these hooked to my home theater
receiver.

One thing I should have mentioned, is that once you start the streaming
to your ChromeCast device, your iPhone is taken out of the loop and is
no longer needed. This is nice since you're no longer using your smart
phone resources. You can go back into the app your casting though and
cancel the casting.

There's an app on Android called Google Home that allows you to control
your ChromeCast devices. It looks like you have the same thing in the
App Store at https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/google-home/id680819774?mt=8

When casting from an app, only the audio or video from that app is sent
over to your ChromeCast. Your TTS is not sent over. There is an option
in Google Home to mirror the audio from your smart phone though, and if
you use this feature then all of the audio on your phone is sent over to
the ChromeCast including the TTS.

an iPhone.

Basically, you buy a Chrome Cast device which you add to your wifi
network and plug into the audio input of a device, such as to a home
theater system with HDMI or powered external speakers with a 3MM
jack. Now you find an app that supports Chrome Cast and double tap
the cast button and choose your destination. Like I said, I do this
all of the time from my Android smart phone.

Notes in iOS 11?

2017-10-18 Thread Alan Lemly
Hi List,

I guess I'm a bit slow but I'm wanting to open a text file I created on my
computer with Notepad and saved to a Dropbox folder with the Notes app in
iOS 11.0.3. I'll be darned if I can figure out how to do it. Surely the
Notes app can be used to view notes and other text documents not created on
it and saved in the cloud?

I'd welcome specific instructions on how to access such text files with the
Notes app.

Thanks in advance.

Re: very frustrated with Blindfold's Millionaire game: possible answers aren't spoken

2017-10-18 Thread Donna
This is the #1 reason I do not play Blindfold games; the player loses coins
when trying to trouble shoot what may be a bug in a game.

I realize time is put into developing the Blindfold games. I have no problem
paying for a game that the developer gets rid of bugs within a game in a timely
manner. In my opinion, to purchase unlimited game play for most of the
Blindfold games is Way over priced!

RE: elliptical with Bluetooth connections

2017-10-18 Thread Cristóbal
I’ve seen equipment tout iFit connectivity. If memory serves, it’s a
subscription based service. I’m not entirely sure though. Maybe someone can
check that.

Anyway… I suppose the pertinent question is how accessible is the iFit iOS
app/service with VO? Reviewing stats and controling the machine? This would be
interesting to know.

I think someone asked about an elliptical that had bluetooth connections. Mine
does, but I have never used them. Here is the section of the manual describing
the Bluetooth options. There is also a place to connect a tablet.

NORDICTRACK® E 9.5 I elliptical

HOW TO CONNECT YOUR SMART DEVICE TO THE
CONSOLE
The console supports BLUETOOTH connections to
smart devices via the iFit app and to compatible heart
rate monitors. Note: Other BLUETOOTH connections
are not supported.
1. Download and install the iFit app on your smart
device.
On your iOS® or Android™ smart device, open the
App Store℠ or the Google Play™ store, search for
the free iFit app, and then install the app on your
smart device. Make sure that the BLUETOOTH
option is enabled on your smart device.
Then, open the iFit app and follow the instructions
to set up an iFit account and customize settings.
2. Connect your smart device to the console.
Follow the instructions in the iFit app to connect
your smart device to the console.
When a connection is established, the LED on the
console will flash blue. Press the Bluetooth Smart
button on the console to confirm the connection;
the LED on the console will then turn solid blue.
3. Record and track your workout information.
Follow the instructions in the iFit app to record and
track your workout information.
4. Disconnect your smart device from the console
if desired.
To disconnect your smart device from the console,
press and hold the Bluetooth Smart button on the
console for 5 seconds.
Note: All BLUETOOTH connections between the
console and other devices (including any smart
devices, heart rate monitors, and so forth) will be
disconnected.
HOW TO CONNECT YOUR HEART RATE MONITOR
TO THE CONSOLE
The console is compatible with all BLUETOOTH Smart
heart rate monitors.
To connect your BLUETOOTH Smart heart rate monitor
to the console, press the Bluetooth Smart button
on the console. When a connection is established, the
LED on the console will flash red twice.
Note: If there is more than one compatible heart rate
monitor near the console, the console will connect to
the heart rate monitor with the strongest signal.
To disconnect your heart rate monitor from the console,
press and hold the Bluetooth Smart button on the console
for 5 seconds.
Note: All BLUETOOTH connections between the console
and other devices (including any smart devices,
heart rate monitors, and so forth) will be disconnected.
HOW TO USE THE SOUND SYSTEM
To play music or audio books through the console
sound system while you exercise, plug a 3.5 mm male
to 3.5 mm male audio cable (not included) into the
jack on the console and into a jack on your personal
audio player; make sure that the audio cable is fully
plugged in. Note: To purchase an audio cable, see
your local electronics store.
7065
Next, press the play button on
your personal audio player. Adjust
the volume level using the volume
increase and decrease buttons on
the console or the volume control
on your personal audio player.
THE OPTIONAL CHEST HEART RATE MONITOR
7110
Whether your
goal is to
burn fat or to
strengthen your
cardiovascular
system, the key
to achieving the
best results is
to maintain the
proper heart
rate during your
workouts. The optional chest heart rate monitor will
enable you to continuously monitor your heart rate
while you exercise, helping you to reach your personal
fitness goals. To purchase a chest heart rate monitor,
please see the front cover of this manual.
Note: The console is compatible with all BLUETOOTH
Smart heart rate monitors.

Hello, it's the penultimate tab in the new app store. There should be "today",
"games", "apps", "updates" and "search".

2017-10-18 Thread christopher hallsworth
Hello, you can be on any tab, except updates, and not just the apps tab. I do
not find this at all complicated, however I have been using iOS 11 since public
beta 1 when, in that release, you could not do anything regarding purchased
apps. That thankfully is history and it is now very much usable. This is all
part of the redesigned App Store introduced in iOS 11.

RE: where are previous app purchases?

2017-10-18 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I wouldn’t call this far more complicated, yes, there is one extra step and
that is to go first into the My Account area, but while the “Purchased” section
previously was only to be found in the Updates tab, the “My Account button is
now in every tab except Search. It makes no difference in iOS 11 whether you
are in the Today tab, apps, games or updates, each of them has the My Account
button.
Also, if you have a 6S/6S Plus or later which supports 3D Touch you can just do
a hard press on the App Store icon and one of the options in the shortcut menu
is “Purchased” which takes you straight to your purchased apps without having
to even open the App Store first.
Other choices here are to go straight to search which also puts you in the
search box with focus already active so you are ready to type in what you are
looking for and another shortcut is for redeeming a gift card.

Regards,
Sieghard

Hi,

Apple for whatever reason decided to make this far more complicated in the new
App Store. What you now need to do, is look for the apps tab along the bottom
of the screen and activated. Then, you need to look for my account and activate
that. And that’s green you should find the purchased button when you activated
you should see what you were looking for. Hope that helps.

I just bought an app and tried to find the purchased ones on my hubby’s
phone so he can use it also. It was available for family sharing. I
can’t find the purchased items, though. I’ve looked in the app store and
in i tunes. what am I missing?

 Thanks!
 Caitlyn

Re: new blood glucose sensor

2017-10-18 Thread Caitlyn Furness
Yes, that’s right. You can have different alarms for different circumstances.
You can also pick a range to try and stay within, so for example, my high alarm
is set at 16, my low is at 4 so I can do something about it before it goes too
low.

RE: Cleared notfications Come back the next day

2017-10-18 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
You were able to use it before in iOS 10 as well, if you do a single finger
triple tap on the clear notifications button at least for me it bypasses the
"Confirm" message and simply clears the notifications fot aht day.

What is a "triple tap"? Is it new to 11, or specific to the notifications
screen?

Thanks.

When I was running iOS 11.0.2, there were a few times when I couldn't clear the
notifications on my 6S. The clear notifications button was there, but I
couldn't get the confirmation button to appear. However, a reboot, meaning
turning the iPhone off and then back on, then let me clear them without a
problem. I haven't yet had that problem with iOS 11.0.3.

I can't delete mine. I triple click the clear notifications button for a given
day, and they don't go away.

Is there a way to keep cleared notifications from returning? I
do not want to turn them off completely, but if I've cleared the
ones from earlier today, I don't want to find them again
tomorrow. I am running IOS Version 11.03 on the iPhone 6+.

OK, got the picture. Sounds interesting and, presumably, it's pretty
small and can fit with all your other items without difficulty.

Do you get better ones than others, or are they just one make and as
good as each other?

Basically, you buy a Chrome Cast device which you add to your wifi
network and plug into the audio input of a device, such as to a home
theater system with HDMI or powered external speakers with a 3MM jack.
Now you find an app that supports Chrome Cast and double tap the cast
button and choose your destination. Like I said, I do this all of the
time from my Android smart phone.

anybody know if Chromecast can be used by people who are blind or

apps for tracking exercise

2017-10-18 Thread Dan

Hi,

I am still trying to determine the best way to take advantage
of joining Weight Watchers.

I have an exercise bike but it is not connectable.  I am
thinking I could still track my exercise by entering the data
into an app.  What apps do any of you use that are accessible
for doing this kind of thing?  Are there any that you use that
detect your motion and track your time/etc while riding  a
stationary bike?  Of course I am hoping for something free but
if needed I could pay for one if it isn't too expensive.

If there are any that will feed the data into Weight
Watchers' system it would be even better.  I know that the
Weight Watchers app will feed it in but it would have to be
manually entered into the app first.  Just trying to avoid as
much of this as I can.  Does this mean I am basically lazy?
;-)) (probably)

Thanks for any help.

Dan Beaver

when I play an episode and check my storage it shows that episode taking up
