Hello All,

Well, I now have an iPHone X, on loan for a few days.

I must say, as has been reported by others, that the new Home/App switcher
gesture commands work beautifully with VoiceOver. Also, Face ID was a
breeze to set up, however, I would like to note that I have enough vision to
see exactly how to position the front-facing camera.

Be that as it may, as a low-vision user, I toggle the Invert Color feature
on and off, countless times during the day.

On previous iPHone models, this was not a problem being that the Home button
was located in the bottom center of the phone.

However, with iPHone X, I must use the side button, located on the right
side of the device.

I am left-handed. In fact, to my surprise, I realized that I am really,
really a left-handed person when it comes to iPhone. (smile)

Consequently, it is no longer as convenient to use Invert Colors as I am
having to toggle this feature with either my right hand or hold the phone in
a slightly awkward position in order to reach the side button with my middle
finger on my left hand.

I do not have a case for this phone so don't know if I'd be able to reach
the button with my left hand were the device placed inside such an
accessory.

In terms of making a decision as to which phone to purchase, I will need
more time with iPhone X. However, I can tell you that, at this point, I am
leaning towards iPHone 8 Plus if for no other reason but that I prefer the
triple-click button to be in a more neutral location on the phone than is
currently the case on iPHone X.

If there were no iPHone 8 series, I would most likely purchase iPhone X and
learn to live with it; however, currently I have a choice and for this I am
grateful.

What I hope is that, someday, Apple, along with all the other hardware
manufacturers, will allow user-defined hardware button assignments. For
example, iPHone 11 would have 4 hardware buttons, 2 on each side and the
user could determine which is for volume up, Siri, Screen Lock, etc.

Per chance to dream, eh? (smile)

Need some help with the M braille app

2017-11-05 Thread Kimberly
Hi all,

I have just started playing with the M braille app and I seem to be having some
trouble. First, the swiping gestures often don't work for me or they don't do
what the user manual says they should. For example, a single finger swipe down
is supposed to enter a new line while a single finger swipe up is supposed to
read the text that was entered. I find they do the opposite.what am i doing
wrong?

Any help is appreciated.

RE: some questions on the messages app in IOS11

In my case this only worked if I tapped on the actual button, it was not enough
to put Voiceover focus on the button and then double tap and hold and drag down
anywhere.
Find the Messages Apps button by exploring the screen, once you found it,
double tap on that exact spot, hold on the second tap and drag your finger down
to the bottom of the phone.

RE: using a passcode

2017-11-05 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Vicki,

1. If I lock my screen manually, do I need to type in the passcode every time I
want to unlock it?
Yes, but as Anna has said, set up Touch Id or, if you already have an iPhone
X, Face Id, and unlocking your phone is very easy. If you have a phone If you
have a phone with Touch Id I also recommend you go to Settings > General >
Accessibility > Home Button.
At the very bottom turn on “Rest finger to open”.
The explanation is this “Open iPhone with Touch Id without having to press the
home button”.
What this means is that if you wake up the phone using the power/sleep button
on the side, you can then just place your finger on the Touch Id sensor (the
home button) but you won’t have to actually press it down, just placing your
finger on it will read your fingerprint and unlock the phone.
If you are more used to waking up you rphone by pressing the home button, you
can use your Touch Id finger, press the home button and after you let go just
leave it there for a second or even less and your phone is already unlocked.
In fact, I find it easier to unlock my phone with Touch Id than without a
passcode because if you don’t have a passcode you have to wake up your phone by
pressing the power/sleep button or the home button, then you have to double tap
where it says to tap to unlock the phone. I am very used to simply pressing the
home button, I rest my finger on it for a moment after I press it and my phone
unlocks, it’s super-fast on the 6S/6S Plus, 7/7Plus and 8/8 Plus and very
reliable, if you have a 5S or 6 these still have the first generation Touch Id
sensors which are a bit slower but also work quite well.

2. Do notifications and text messages show up on the locked screen when using a
passcode?
That depends if you allow this, but if you do then they will show up on the
lock screen.

3. Are there other things I should be aware of that might make it difficult to
use a passcode?
I don’t think so, you can I think still set a 4-ddigit passcode in iOS 11, but
I am not totally sure, if the option is there it might be a bit hidden which it
already was in iOS 10 because by default they want you to use a 6-digit code.

4. Will my medical information show up on the locked screen for access if I am
using a passcode?
Yes, again this is something you can control and it is not instantly there,
where the keypad shows up and you are asked to enter your passcode there is an
“Emergency” button at the bottom right, tap on that and on the next screen you
can dial a number like 911 and at the bottom left is a button to show the
medical Id. I am quite sure first responders know well how to access this.

Sieghard

reformatting and reinstalling everything I do not know how to get rid of these.

Hi Fanus,

Here are a few options I found, you find tons more if you Google “Play music
from Dropbox on my iOS device” or something like that, there will also be
articles from places like CNET which list their top picks and I would
definitely suggest you check www.Applevis.com to see
if there are reviews about any of these apps or others which comment on
accessibility. Many of these apps are free or at least free to try so you can
always do that.

Jukebox by thedrop.club

CloudPlayer - audio player from clouds By Stanislav Feldman
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/cloudplayer-audio-player-from-clouds/id920792781?mt=8
Free app but I think has some in-app purchase and it was updated last November

iOS 10 was released last year and therefore of course no iOS 11 update, either.

Evermusic - offline music By Artem Meleshko

RE: Voice Mail on the iPhone 8

2017-11-05 Thread Richard Petty
My experience using AT&T (which might or might not make a difference) is that
the audio of the message is translated into text, often not especially well,
but translated nevertheless. Since, for me at least, it’s not often accurate
enough to use, I might well try to change the Siri voice to Australian English
in an attempt to stop translation.

Hello: I am having a problem when I attempt to play a message from voicemail.
When I hit the play button, a transcript appears, which I'd like to get rid of.
I looked in settings and there doesn't seem to be a way to disable it. The
transcript makes it difficult to hear the actual voice message. Is anyone
having this problem and is there a solution?

Thanks.

What do you mean by transcription? Is it reading the screen or is it
transcribing the actual voicemail?

Re: iPHone screen Braille input

2017-11-05 Thread Woody Anna Dresner
Hi,

Go to VoiceOver Settings, choose Rotor, and select Braille Screen Input. Move
it if you want it in a different place on the rotor.

To use it, turn the rotor to Braille Screen Input to use it.

Mark on iPHone X: Left-Handed Low Vision, Display Accommodation Users, Beware

2017-11-05 Thread M. Taylor

(smile)

Mark

Re: using a passcode

2017-11-05 Thread Richard Turner
Hi,
It is in the VoiceOver settings, it is probably on standard typing, which is
the default. Look for Typing Style. Double tap it and select touch typing, not
direct touch typing. Touch typing means when you touch a letter or number, and
lift your finger it is entered. So if you touch the wrong one, slide your
finger to the right one, don't lift until you have the one you want.
You can also select Typing Style in the rotor settings so you can change it on
the fly if you ever want to rather than having to go into settings.
It will only be available on the rotor if you are in an editable field.

I think iOS 11 may require a 6 digit passcode.
If you lock the screen, manually, or if it locks itself after so many minutes,
yes, you will have to enter the passcode to unlock the phone which is the whole
point of a passcode, so no one but you can unlock the phone.
If you use touch typing, entering the passcode is not difficult.
If you have your notifications set to show on the lock screen, they will show
on the lock screen.
There is an emergency button on the screen that is accessible whether you have
a passcode or not that should then show your medical information.

Richard

RE: deleting siri voices

2017-11-05 Thread Chip Orange
Well, IOS is supposed to automatically remove them if they aren't being used
after a certain period of time. This was a bug in earlier versions of 11 where
it would delete them even if they *were* being used, at least with some models
of iPhones. I was hoping this had been fixed with 11.1.

Hey everyone, got an interesting issue. I decided to download the enhansed siri
voices since they can also be used with voiceover, I gave them a try but found
that I didn't like them, too sluggish, however I see no way to remove them once
they are downloaded, is this the case? There is no option to delete them in the
actions menu like there is with other voices and double tapping on the voice
itself does not provide a wahy to do this either. I hate to waste the 700 or so
MB that these voices are using and would rather not do a hard reset if I can
avoid it, any ideas?

Re: using a passcode

2017-11-05 Thread Woody Anna Dresner
Hi,

If your phone is running iOS 11, you have Touch ID or FACE ID available, with
Touch ID the most likely. So when you set up your passcode, set up Touch ID as
well. Then you can unlock your phone with your fingerprint most of the time,
and so using a passcode isn't that annoying.

Best,
Anna

Re: some questions on the messages app in IOS11

2017-11-05 Thread Chris Chaffin

In the messages app in ios 11 there is a doc like on your home screen. You can
make it disappear if you want. To do this, you have to find the message apps
button on the actual screen. I believe it is to the left of the message edit
field. Once you find the message apps button, just do a double tap and hold,
then without lifting your finger, slide it to the bottom of the screen.

Hope this helps.

Chris

Re: New iPhone 8, Not Receiving Notifications

2017-11-05 Thread Robin Frost
Hi,
I always make it a point to be sure to launch all such apps from which I’m used
to receiving notifications from to be sure they wake up and reconnect once on a
new device. Try that and then exiting out of all you don’t need to keep running
and see if that doesn’t revive your notifications. It’s worked for all but my
Twitterrific app sadly. That one still remains comatose with no known fix from
its makers. But all other push notifications re working fine on my newer device.
I hope that helps.

I am delighted with the new iPhone 8 plus acquired a couple of days ago, but
there is something amiss with notifications, I don’t appear to be getting any
notifications, except for text messages, but none from the various news outlets
that I had previously set up on the prior phone.

I have already tried Reset Netwowrk Settings, so I must be missing something.

Sorry if this has been previously discussed, I may have missed it, but any tips
would be great.

Thanks a lot.

some questions on the messages app in IOS11

2017-11-05 Thread Jed Barton
Hey guys,

OK, i made the plunge to IOS 11 and all seems to be working well.
Question on the messages app. When i am typing a message, the send
button doesn't seem to be in the usual spot. Across the bottom of the
messages app there seems to be buttons like twitter, youtube, etc.
Any reason why they are there? When i open up a message, what's the
best way to get to the edit field to type a message?

Cheers,
Jed

Re: LookTel Recognizer, will it be updated?

2017-11-05 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Michael,

LookTel Recognizer allows you to create a collection of images with voice tags
explaining what they are. I use it to distinguish between coffee mugs that are
identical apart from the pictures on them.
You can use it to identify clothing, too, but you need the help of a sighted
person to create the voice tags in the first place. After that, you can always
tell things apart using the Recogniser app and it works almost instantaneously.

Cheers,

Anne

Hi,

In addition, Airdrop is fantastic if you have an iOS device and a computer. I
often donwload MP3 files on my computer, for example, and Airdrop them to Voice
Dream Reader on my phone. The transfers are very quick. If you and a friend
have iOS devices, it's also great for exchanging contact information.

Best,
Anna

Airdrop allows you to transfer things like pictures, videos, contacts or other
files from one iOS device to another using bluetooth.
My wife and I both have iPhones so if, for example, I have a picture I want
to send to her, I go into Photos, open the picture, tap on “Share” and then I
see all the share options like Message, email and so on and there will also be
an option for Airdrop. If we both have Airdrop turned on and are close to each
other (this only works when you are maybe 10 or 20 feet apart at most) then her
name would show up next to Airdrop. I tap on that and she instantly gets a
notification which pops up on her iPhone which tells her I am sharing this and
if she wants to Accept or Decline. If she taps Accept then in just a second or
two the picture is transferred and now is part of her Photo library just as if
she had taken it herself.
You can turn Airdrop on or off, if On you can select “Contacts only” or
“Everybody” which means if you selected Contacts Only nobody nearby would be
able to send you anything. Let’s say you were at an airport waiting for your
flight with a dozen or more people sitting nearby, if you had Airdrop turned on
and set to “Everybody” then somebody could randomly send you a photo or
whatever, of course you can decline it, but I usually have mine set to Contacts
Only.

  Take care,

Re: alternative music player for iPod

2017-11-05 Thread Fanus
Hello Sieghard
Thanks much. For some reason I can not google for anything or serve on the
internet. It seems someone is targetting me because whenever I open a site
popups appear which just take over. I tried everything but apart from perhaps
reformatting and reinstalling everything I do not know how to get rid of these.
It happens with IE, Chrome and FireFox. So thanks for giving me the names of
apps which I shall install from my iPod.

Hi Fanus,

Here are a few options I found, you find tons more if you Google “Play music
from Dropbox on my iOS device” or something like that, there will also be
articles from places like CNET which list their top picks and I would
definitely suggest you check www.Applevis.com to see if there are reviews about
any of these apps or others which comment on accessibility. Many of these apps
are free or at least free to try so you can always do that.

Jukebox by thedrop.club

https://www.cnet.com/how-to/play-music-from-dropbox-on-your-iphone-when-you-are-offline/

CloudBeats: Music Player By Cronosell, $4.99 US but free to try

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/cloudbeats-offline-cloud-music-player/id573192227?mt=8

CloudPlayer - audio player from clouds By Stanislav Feldman

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/cloudplayer-audio-player-from-clouds/id920792781?mt=8

Free app but I think has some in-app purchase and it was updated last November
after iOS 10 came out

CloudMusic - Music Player for Google Drive, OneDrive, and DropBox By wenhe zeng

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/cloudmusic-music-player-for-google-drive-onedrive-dropbox/id1083761107?mt=8

Free app, but has not been updated since March 2016 which means no update after
iOS 10 was released last year and therefore of course no iOS 11 update, either.

Evermusic - offline music By Artem Meleshko

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/evermusic-offline-music/id885367198?mt=8

Free app, was updated early October after iOS 11 was released.

Sieghard

Hello list

After loading a few songs on my iPod via dropbox I notice there are apps on the
iPod, like Voice Dream, to which I can share the songs. My question is thus if
there is an alternative music app which would let me play music. I tried
everything to load old music from my pc via iTunes but with no luck, so if
there is an alternative then at least I can listen to that music which is not
available in the apple music store.

RE: iPhone question

2017-11-05 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
If this is a Dropbox folder on your PC I don’t think the problem is that it
won’t let you copy the tone.
What you say is that after you paste it is not listed in your list of Tones?
Could you send me one of your Tones then I could try it and see if it works for
me or if there might be a problem with the file itself.
You can email me directly, siegh...@live.ca, and
attach the ringtone.

RE: what happened to airdrop

2017-11-05 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Fanus,

Since nobody else replied yet, here the short version:
Airdrop allows you to transfer things like pictures, videos, contacts or other
files from one iOS device to another using bluetooth.
My wife and I both have iPhones so if, for example, I have a picture I want to
send to her, I go into Photos, open the picture, tap on “Share” and then I see
all the share options like Message, email and so on and there will also be an
option for Airdrop.
Only.

Take care,
Sieghard

RE: alternative music player for iPod

2017-11-05 Thread Sieghard Weitzel

Jukebox by thedrop.club
https://www.cnet.com/how-to/play-music-from-dropbox-on-your-iphone-when-you-are-offline/

CloudBeats: Music Player By Cronosell, $4.99 US but free to try
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/cloudbeats-offline-cloud-music-player/id573192227?mt=8

CloudPlayer - audio player from clouds By Stanislav Feldman
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/cloudplayer-audio-player-from-clouds/id920792781?mt=8
Free app but I think has some in-app purchase and it was updated last November
after iOS 10 came out

CloudMusic - Music Player for Google Drive, OneDrive, and DropBox By wenhe zeng
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/cloudmusic-music-player-for-google-drive-onedrive-dropbox/id1083761107?mt=8
Free app, but has not been updated since March 2016 which means no update after
iOS 10 was released last year and therefore of course no iOS 11 update, either.

Evermusic - offline music By Artem Meleshko
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/evermusic-offline-music/id885367198?mt=8
Free app, was updated early October after iOS 11 was released.

Subject: Voice Mail on the iPhone 8

Hello: I am having a problem when I attempt to play a message from voicemail.
When I hit the play button, a transcript appears, which I'd like to get rid of.
I looked in settings and there doesn't seem to be a way to disable it. The
transcript makes it difficult to hear the actual voice message. Is anyone
having this problem and is there a solution?
Thanks.

So, I will skip the story on how I got my iPHone x. But verizon stores
still had them after 4 PM yesterday. Got it home, turned it on, and it
couldn’t have been easier. I put it next to my iPhone 8, and it installed
all my apps and settings the exact same way. FaceID? There is nothing
easier. It was faster than touchID. YOu just hold the phone about a foot
away from your face, rotate your head in a clock wise motion, and it
captures to shots and your done. Took me less than 30 seconds. Also, I
took the faceID without a hat on, and then put a hat on to unlock my phone
to see if it made a difference, no diffence at all, it unlocked just like it
suppose too. The no home button took a little practice, but it works just
as easy once you get use to it. YOu lay your finger at the bottom of the
phone where the home button use to be, once you get some habtic feedback,
you drag up, it vibrates once, you let go and your on the home screen, or
the main part of a folder where ever you were previously. If you continue
dragging your finger up, it vibrates again and you lift you will be in the
app switcher. Bringing the notifications center up works the same way it
did befor, at least for me. I touch the status bar, and drag 3 fingers
down. Same with control center, after touching the status bar. I don’t
know if this was done on purpose, but I saw some blergs that said you do it
a different way. All apps haven’t jumped on the faceID bandwagon yet, but
my bank app, my xfinity app, and my t-mobile app all allow me to use faceID
to log into them. Phone feels nice and light in my hands, I hate to put an
otterbox on it, but I don’t want to pay 5 bengamens to replace it. That’s
all for now, but I am sure I will find out more over time.

New iPhone 8, Not Receiving Notifications

2017-11-05 Thread Jim Fettgather
I am delighted with the new iPhone 8 plus acquired a couple of days ago, but
there is something amiss with notifications, I don't appear to be getting
any notifications, except for text messages, but none from the various news
outlets that I had previously set up on the prior phone.

I have already tried Reset Netwowrk Settings, so I must be missing
something.

Sorry if this has been previously discussed, I may have missed it, but any
tips would be great.

Thanks a lot.

Innocent question: mail badge app icon

2017-11-05 Thread John R. Vaughn
Sieghard, what is the "mail badge"? I do not want to assume it is the icon, if
it is not.
Thanks for helping this old guy learn the good ways of using the IPhone. You
and this list have been a blessing for my learning the IPhone.

I haven't had thi shappen even once on my 6S Plus since iOS 11 came out, I ran
every beta of iOS 11.1 and also had no issues with this except that in the beta
before the public release the Mail app always said 0 unread messages even
though I had unread emails, but the next beta which became the public release
fixed this for me.

Hi Chris,

I have an iPhone 8 and so far I only lost the badge on mail one time. After a
restart, it didn't happen again. If you have already restarted, done a hard
restart and all of that, it is probably time to get Apple involved.

Good luck!

Hello, I am consistently having problems keeping my badge app icons on the home
screen. So far, I have lost my badge app icons for the app store, reminders,
and mail.
If I restart my phone the badge app icons come back. I even did a reset
yesterday. It fixed everything, but I just noticed that the badge app icon is
no longer there for the mail app. So my problems continue. I am having to
restart my phone multiple times a day to keep my badge app icons on my
homescreen.
Since this can effect badge app icons for different apps, I was wondering if
this could be a small bug with ios 11.1, and if anyone else is having badge app
icons appear and disappear on their homescreen.

Thanks,

Chris

control c, then I shift tab to iTunes make sure I’m in the tones section of the
iTunes by selecting my device and tabbing to where it lists of the items like

that’s when it says that it’s copying the file, and that’s all it says it

Hi Simon,

I assume you are using a Mac, since you can only copy between an iPhone and a

sure Handoff is working, try opening a page in Safari on your phone. Then

RE: iPhone question

2017-11-05 Thread David Whitehead
hello;

after tabbing to the summary,

then arrowing or pressing t=tones,

are you then tabbing to the list of ringtones before pasting?

I installed 12.7, I copied the ringtones from a folder I made in Dropbox
control c, then I shift tab to iTunes make sure I’m in the tones section of the
iTunes by selecting my device and tabbing to where it lists of the items like
summary etc, then went to the tone section a paste the item control V and
that’s when it says that it’s copying the file, and that’s all it says it
doesn’t say that it’s already in.

It would help if you describe in detail how you are copying and pasting these
ringtones since this process has changed in iTunes 12.7.

You also don’t say what version of iTunes you use, 12.7 or have you installed
the 12.6.3 Enterprise version?

What are you copying, or is that information private?

The newer iTunes does not do all what the previous ones did.

Hi Simon,

I assume you are using a Mac, since you can only copy between an iPhone and a
computer if that computer is a Mac. The Mac needs to be running at least
sierra, and Handoff needs to be working between the computer and phone. To make
sure Handoff is working, try opening a page in Safari on your phone. Then
Command-Tab on your computer and make sure "Safari from my iPHone" is an
available option. If not, make sure Bluetooth is on on both devices, that
they're connected to the same Wi-Fi network, and Handoff is on on both devices.

Best,

alternative music player for iPod

2017-11-05 Thread Fanus
Regards
Fanus
