Re: Edit Mode

2018-01-19 Thread Wayne Merritt
Hello Reg. In iOS 11 you can opt to have the edit mode turned on or
off with VoiceOver. If it is on, then you just have to flick up/down
on an app or folder on a home screen and VoiceOver will announce
editing. If the option is turned off, then you will have to double tap
and hold to turn on editing mode. Like Sieghard, I'm glad they removed
the extra verbage from the announcement we got in iOS 10 when on the
home screen. I did like this new thing with the ability to turn the
feature on or off depending on how you wanted things to operate. Until
that is I accidentally flicked ever so slightly on my home screens and
heard VoiceOver announce "editing", and then I quickly flicked up or
down again to go back to the default selection mode. To turn this
feature on or off, go to the VoiceOver settings, which is
settings/general/accessibility/VoiceOver, and then toward the bottom
you will hear Rotor, and then Rotor Actions. Double tap the rotor
actions item, and you can select whether you want this to be turned on
or off. I do like the convenience of flicking to the editing option,
but I have also almost deleted apps at times, and I don't like that at
all.

Hth,
Wayne

the camera sees without having to interact with the phone.

I also find that in many situations the short text channel in the Seeing AI app
does all the OCR I need.

That is not my experience at all.

But, if you do not care about document layout, then KNFB is faster.

With the Short Text mode, once it starts reading the page, point the camera to
a blank spot on your desk, because the entire point of the short text mode is
to read on the fly, so any movement that focuses on other text, or changes the
focus on the same text, will be treated as a new scan. It isn't really designed
for whole page scanning, that is what the document channel is for.

But, if it doesn't work for you, sticking with KNFB makes perfect sense.

Scott White, at NFB, tells me that format retention should be in an update this
year for KNFB.

Something I've asked for since it was released.

Here's hoping it finally happens.

Seeing AI.

My conclusion: KNFB still beats Seeing AI for scanning print documents by a
country mile.

Take what is called a "face sheet" for a docket, which contains all the basic
information about a case. When trying to do the document channel with Seeing
AI, it would continually tellm me that one or more edges was not visible no
matter how much I adjusted the phone. When I raised the phone really high and
got a "hold steady" it would take a picture but not recognize a bit of text.

With KNFB: I center the camera, lift it up, take a couple field of views to
orient, take a picture and it reads the sheet almost immediately, with very few
flaws at all.

In each case I'm using the same camera and positioning it in the same way. I
can only conclude, then, that it is a difference in the apps.

Seeing AI's short text feature in this case actually worked better than the
document channel, for some reason, but typically still gives garbled text ap
some points and will also stop if you move the camera even a milimeter.

So, I think with a few exceptions I'll be sticking with KNFB Reader.

I do put company names in the company field, but I also put them in the last
name field because otherwise SIRI will not call them.
I guess you could put them only in the last name field and, for that matter,
it's probably fine to put them in the first name field instead, but for my
sense of how things should be the last name field makes more sense.

Hello everyone,

First of all, I want to say thank you for those who offered me help, and
suggestions. It really made me feel better, and not so frustrated. And I can
deal with Siri a little better now. Although, he's still a pain, and likely
always will be. LOL!

Anyway, someone suggested that I not put company names in the company area,
where you think they should go. I don't remember who it was that suggested this.

But I hope you see this message, and read it. I really do appreciate your help.
I changed 2 numbers from the company area and put them in the first name area.

Now if I want the phone to call my apartments, I can say, Siri, call Pembroke,
and it actually does it. Amazing!

I wonder why though I had to change things like that, in order to get it to
work?

Oh well, at least things seem a little better, and for now I don't want
to throw my phone. LOL!

But I just want to thank those of you who helped me, and tried to help
me understand Siri a little better.

Thank you,

Terri

RE: Free Writing App?

2018-01-19 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Not to rain on your parade, but there still are things which are better done on
a computer bluetooth keyboard or not and in my opinion word processing and
spreadsheets are in that category. Actually, email and web browsing for me are
as well. I can read, compose and reply to email so fast on my PC and the same
goes for navigating web pages let alone filling out stuff on them that there is
just no comparison.

a blank spot on your desk, because the entire point of the short text mode is
to read on the fly, so any movement that focuses on other text, or changes the
focus on the same text, will be treated as a new scan. It isn't really designed
for whole page scanning, that is what the document channel is for.
But, if it doesn't work for you, sticking with KNFB makes perfect sense.

Accessible video conferencing

2018-01-19 Thread Holly
 Hi,

In my opinion, Skype has become very difficult to use on the map. It’s still
OK on the iPhone. I really like using Zoom from Zoom.us it has a lot of great
keyboard shortcuts on the Mac, and works excellently with voiceover on the
iPhone. The only drawback is that a group call is cut off after 45 minutes
unless one person on the call has the pro version. Another small issue is the
presence of a couple of unlabeled buttons, but for every day use, this doesn’t
matter.

iPhone X gestures and tips

2018-01-19 Thread the . big . apple . fan

Hi all, I thought I would post the iPhone X gestures for the
iPhone X for new users out there and for the people who are thinking of getting
an iPhone X. I will say that the gestures are easy to learn if you are willing
to learn them. First to unlock and to go home you swipe up from the bottom edge
of the screen until you feel the first vibration. You will hear clicking
sounds. You will want the first click to go home. To go to the app switcher
swipe up from the bottom until you feel the second vibration. Instead of triple
clicking the home button you triple click the side button which was previously
known as the sleep/wake button. A face ID tip: when setting up Face ID you want
to hold the phone at about arms length away from your face.

Re: My Siri issues

Hi,
I mentioned the company field silliness. I believe it has always been this
way. I’m not sure why they have a company name field if Siri doesn’t use it.
Putting the company in first or last name, works great.
Glad that helped.

Re: KNFB Reader v. Seeing AI

2018-01-19 Thread Richard Turner
I do not know if that has an impact on Seeing AI. It might since it is
attempting to retain the format.
I’d suggest writing seein...@microsoft.com and
asking them that very question.
This is just the kind of thing that they could then add to its capability
perhaps.

I wonder why though I had to change things like that, in order to get it
to work?

Oh well, at least things seem a little better, and for now I don't want
to throw my phone. LOL!

But I just want to thank those of you who helped me, and tried to help
me understand Siri a little better.

Thank you,

Terri

RE: KNFB Reader v. Seeing AI

2018-01-19 Thread Cristóbal
Can’t remember the last time I used KNFBReader on my phone. Immediacy of
scanning results is what makes me partial to SeeingAI hands down at this point.
Even if scanning results were marginally better in KNFBReader, the fact that
you can get feedback almost instantaneously in SeeingAI

Would for me anyway outweigh the difference in OCR results. That and the added
channels too. KNFBReader’s got some major catching up to do.

KNFB Reader (which I honestly hadn't used much even though I bought it) and

2018-01-19 Thread K. Scott Carlson
Do you know to what degree things like coloring, greyscale, boxes and
odd fonts can affect Seeing AI's processing of documents? I suspect
with the docket sheets I just described, Seeing AI might be having
problems for that reason. like you, i've had pretty good luck with
Seeing AI when scanning normal documents, but not so much stuff like
this.

Re: KNFB Reader v. Seeing AI

2018-01-19 Thread Richard Turner

Re: Free Writing App?

2018-01-19 Thread K. Scott Carlson
To make clear what I'm looking for, it's pretty simple:

I need an app that can, at the very least, read already-created Word
files. i need it to have basic reading and editing functions but to be
focused primarily on word processing itself; I'm not interested in,
for example, novel creation. I haven't experimented too much with Word
or Pages but it sounds like I may need to try them. Scrivener is not
something I'm willing to pay for, and it sounds like with Writer one
can only create one document at a time.

So, perhaps there simply isn't an app that fulfills what I'm looking
for out there.

Re: Notifications not working on iPhone 7.

2018-01-19 Thread Julie Dawson
I am having the same problem on my SE. My notifications are set properly for
example for AP News and other choices. I removed and reinstalled the app and
the notifications were working. After the last update, notifications stopped
entirely. They are turned on in AP news and in notifications and in speaking
notifications.

Hi all,

Would someone be kind enough to tell me how to set up notifications on my
iPhone 7. .

I was getting notifications for a while. but now they have suddenly
stopped. and the only thing different I have done is to sign into
facebook, to log into Dice World.

I had a similar problem once before, on an iPhone 6. which was fixed
thanks to a member of this list. and having just looked at that E-mail,
all options suggested are on.

In my very biased opinion, Pages is useless on the iDevices. Possibly it could
work with a Bluetooth keyboard, but unti Apple figures out how to truly make
Pages work with VoiceOver so it actually reports where the heck you are in a
document, I'm not sure even a keyboard would help.

I am using the pages app on my iPhone 7 Plus and on my iPad, both running iOS
11 .2 .2. I use voice-over and when I open pages and see displayed all my
folders, if I double tap with one finger on any folder it simply invites me to
edit the name not open the folder. This happens on both iPhone and iPad. The
only way to open the folder to display all the pages documents is to turn
voiceover off and get someone to tap once on the folder, which does then open!
The other bug is that if I use the rotor for text selection, I can select all
using text selection but it does not seem to actually select the text even
though I have double tap on select all. If I go afterwards to edit menu on the
rotor, there is no copy option. Instead the Edit menu offers to select all and
then I can copy and paste. The Text Selection rotor Option seems to be broken.
Can others confirm this before I report it to Apple Accessibility?
Cheers

Thannks for the explanation. Just one other question: I heard that the
iPhone 8 can be charged by placing it on some or other charge pad, more or
less like the charging method of the apple watch. Is this true for iPhone
8 or is it only for the iPhone X?

For the blind, the big differences are that the x has face ID and no
home button on the screen. Both have the same processor so performance
will be the same in each phone. The reason technology journalists say
that the 8 is a disappointment is because the 8 was an incremental
upgrade with no new technology. The x has a new camera system and a
bigger screen with greater image quality. Face recognition is way more
accurate than in Samsung phones. I don’t believe the X is worth the
 price for blind users though.

RE: Accessible video conferencing

2018-01-19 Thread Richard Petty
Zoom is a good option. All controls are accessible in Microsoft Windows as are
the participant lists and chat windows. It has a dial in option. It’s
especially good at cross platform operation. You may have fewer control options
in IOS, but I think that’s true for anyone using the platform. What you will
not have is on screen access to any Power Points or documents shared on the
screen. They’re displayed graphically. You would need to ask your associates to
send them in advance. It seems to be much easier to set up for video (for
sighted persons) and for audio (for anyone). I use the video for presentations
and so that other team members can see me and that works pretty smoothly. Hope
this helps.

Subject: Accessible video conferencing

Hello

I’ve been asked to join a committee which frequently does virtual meetings.
They have an assortment of tech, PCs tablets and so on. They are all sighted.
Some of them are not very advanced users of the tech they have.

Can anyone recommend a cross platform method of video conferencing that is
completely VO friendly? I suspect audio would do, but you know what those
sighted people are like.

Thanks in advance

Re: Accessible video conferencing

2018-01-19 Thread Richard Turner
Make free group calls with Skype. Whether you want to share big news with your
family or need to work closely with a team of colleagues, with Skype group
calling, including conference calling and group chats, you can host a group
video chat or conference call for up to 25 people.
