RE: Is Anyone Using the Free Version of either Pandora or Google Play Music for iOS?

2018-02-18 Thread Cristóbal
In order to get rid of the adds, you have to subscribe to a plan. For free, I
can live with a 30 secodn add every now and then. Same goes for sound quality.
I'm not enough of an audiophile to fuss over quality since I'm usually only
running Pandora when working out or as background music while doing something
else anyway.
As far as the app itself, it's VoiceOver accessible and you can create stations
with either a genre, artist and I'm assuming song (I've only done the first
two). Today in fact, I created a station with the German band Rammstein. Don't
use Spotify, so can't say either way on that.

Mark,
I can't answer your question about Pandora for iOS because I got the app for my
iPad Mini and deleted it shortly thereafter.
The sound quality was degraded, and I had to listen to advertising. I would
have been willing to put up with one or the other, (although I would have
prefered good sound quality and having to listen to ads rather than the other
way around), but I felt it was just too much to put up with both poor sound
quality and ads on top of that.

Hello Everyone,

Okay, I know I said that I had no plans to subscribe to Apple Music, anytime
soon but, well, let's just say I'm reconsidering this position.

The primary reason why I didn't feel the need to subscribe to a music service
is because, once upon a time, one could create custom radio stations based on
artists, genres, a song title, etc, in iTunes. Apparently, Apple has now
restricted this functionality to only Apple Music subscribers.
(smart).

Before I take the subscription plunge, I would like to consider free
alternatives if for no other reason but that I know that I will use the custom
selection feature rarely.

So, is anyone using either the free version of either Pandora or Google Play
Music for iOS? If so, is it possible to create custom stations based on
selected criteria?

I'm probably going to end up subscribing to Apple Music but wanted to at least
put this question out there, in the Ether (smile).

All replies greatly appreciated.

By the way, I'm still loving my HomePod.

Went over to a friend's house today to check out the Amazon Echo. Wow! I was
extremely impressed.

I think I'm going to pick up an Echo Dot and use it at least until my beloved
Siri can catch up, as I truly think she will, in time-a very, very long, long
time perhaps, (big smile). Really enjoyed the audio games that Echo offers.

The way I see it, I will use HomePod for audio playback and personal contact
features, as they become available, and Echo Dot for fun.

2018-02-18 Thread Richard Turner

Mark,
I just compared the free Pandora with the free Spotify.
I would say Spotify's quality is hands down better than Pandora.
Yes, you get about a 30 second commercial every 30 minutes, but its free.
-i just searched for Joni Mitchell and began listening.
For free, you have to use "Shuffle play."
But, Outside of my personal CD collection that I have imported into iTunes,
Spotify makes a nice supplement.

I cannot remember or spell the name of the stand that you put your iPhone on

Scan Scan but it name starts with a p. Any help on this would be appreciated.

if you are referring to TV Guide Mobile, it is completely accessible after

the left.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to get this App to work?

If not, is there a different App out there that will work just as well?

Probably not. I have an unlocked iPhone 6S Plus and if I put a SIM from another
provider in it the phone just works, e.g. if I were in the US and put your
friend’s AT&T or your T-Mobile SIM into my phone it would simply say that I am
on the AT&T or T-Mobil network at the top left and I could make a call or do
whatever.
The thing is that if you bought the phone from T-Mobile on contract even if it
were unlocked you couldn’t just leave T-Mobile without paying off your
contract.

RE: The TV guide App

2018-02-18 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Terri,

The TV Guide Mobile app for iOS is completely VoiceOver accessible, once you
get past the Welcome screen. It's been quite some time since I encountered the
Welcome screen but if I recall, you can perform a 3-finger swipe from
right-to-left in order to get to the end of the welcome messages and then
activate the Done/Got-it, button.

Regarding my phone, and if it’s unlocked

2018-02-18 Thread Terri Stimmel
Hello everyone,

So I tried what was suggested. I put a friend’s SIM card in to my phone. It
came up with the message to activate the phone.
So does this mean it’s already unlocked?

Just to refresh everyone’s memory, I have T-Mobile. My friend who helped me out
has AT&T.

Thank you,

Terri

Hi Richard,

Yes it does. It's 1 L E D that is either the color, Red, when it's

Is it one light that changes color? If it is bright enough TapTapSee might
work if Seeing AI'S color channel doesn't.
Or, you might try one that is called, color inspector.

EyeNote United States Currency Identification

2018-02-18 Thread Richard Turner
>From www.eyenote.gov

As of January 22, 2018, the updated EyeNote(r) 3.0 app is now 64-bit and works
on Apple mobile devices that support iOS version 9.1 or greater. These include
Apple iPhone(r) 5 and newer models, 5th generation iPod(r) Touch and later
generations, and iPad(r)2 and newer models.

Also, in the iOS settings, Eyenote, you can toggle on the settings menu so from
within the app you can choose whether it Speaks the currency, plays tones, or
vibrates with a pulse.
If on pulse, this is what the pulses mean:
1 pulse, $1
2 pulses, $2
3 pulses, $5
4 pulses, $10
5 pulses, $20
6 pulses, $50
7 pulses, $100
8 rapid pulses, Error.

HTH,
Richard

And RecUp which used to be Dropvox is also a super-simple recorder which allows
you to save recordings in MP3 format to a Dropbox folder which means that if
you have Dropbox set up on your PC the recordings will automatically be there
without having to download anything. You can also set up RecUp so it starts
recording as soon as you open the app.

It saves to iCloud Drive or on your device.

to go to 192.168.1.65:54602 and see a directory of my recordings with the
ability to play from there or download. It records in m4a and the quality is
nice. So I'll use this one if I want to keep a copy on my phone and recup if I
just want to immediately send it straight to dropbox. I like irecorder because
it will show the date and time that a recording was made. The native voice
memos app only shows the date. You can still send to dropbox and other places
using irecorder.

RE: What you need to know about unlocked phones vs. locked phones - CNET

2018-02-18 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
The market in Canada is not as competitive yet, but fortunately going forward
at least locked phones are a thing of the past here since the CRTC (Canadian
Radio and Television Commission) has ruled that no carrier can sell locked
phones any more as of December 1 last year and existing locked phones have to
be unlocked for free. Bell still tried to charge a few people an unlocking fee
because they bought a used phone but weren't Bell customers and that caused
such an outcry in the media that they quickly dropped it.

Unlocked phones vs. locked phones: Why you should care In this edition of Ask
Maggie, CNET's Marguerite Reardon breaks down what you need to know about the
carrier practice of locking phones.
By Marguerite Reardon, February 17, 2018 5:00 AM PST

FAQ

Should you get an unlocked phone?
The US wireless market is more competitive than ever, which is great news for
consumers who have lots of choices when it comes choosing a service provider.
But one barrier still exists when trying to switch carriers: the locked
smartphone.

The end of wireless contracts marked a watershed trend for consumers because it
finally opened the door for them to more easily shop around for alternative
wireless carriers. But the software locks that carriers put on phones
restricting its use on other networks still prevent many consumers from having
total freedom when it comes to choosing a provider.

Now Verizon, the only wireless carrier that sold its phones unlocked out of the
box, is reversing course. The company said earlier this week it would begin
locking the phones it sells to consumers for an undetermined period of time,
which will prevent them from using a SIM card from another carrier.
But Verizon promised it would eventually unlock the device after activation.
The company hasn't said how long that period would be.

Verizon said it's doing this to deter criminals from stealing phones, which are
often stolen en route to retail stores or from the stores themselves.
Unlocked phones make attractive targets because they can be resold on the black
market or used overseas with different carriers. That's particularly the case
for iPhones, which are a top target for thieves because of their high resale
value.

Because I get so many questions about the difference between locked versus
unlocked phones and what it means to the average wireless customer, I've put
together this FAQ for my Ask Maggie readers to summarize the basics.

What's the difference between a locked and unlocked phone?
The difference is that a locked phone has a software code on it that prevents
you from using it on another network. An unlocked phone either doesn't have the
software lock on it or someone was able to get a code that unlocks the
software. Once a device is unlocked, you can pop out the SIM card and put in a
different SIM and get service.

What's the benefit of having an unlocked phone?
The biggest benefit of having an unlocked phone is that if you want to switch
wireless operators, you can easily do that. All you have to do is pop in a new
SIM and sign up for service. There's no need to buy a new phone.
This is great because it lets you shop around for the cheapest service instead
of being stuck with a particular carrier because you don't want to buy a new
phone.

This flexibility can also come in handy for people traveling overseas. It's
usually less expensive to use a local wireless service while traveling abroad.
And again, you simply pop out the SIM card in your phone and replace it with
one from a local carrier. And voila! You will have a new local number and it
will be cheaper to make calls in country and access the internet than if you
used a US carrier's service that would require roaming on the foreign network.

Does GSM vs CDMA still matter?
Yes, the voice networks of US wireless carriers still use two fundamentally
different technologies GSM and CDMA. Sprint and Verizon use CDMA, while AT&T
and T-Mobile along with most of the rest of the world use GSM.

The good news is that phones are a bit more compatible and portable among
carriers than they were a few years ago. But phone makers, like Apple, still
tend to make multiple versions of their phones so you need to know which model
you're buying before you can know if you can take it to another carrier.
For instance, Apple sells two versions of the iPhone 7, 7 Plus, 8, 8 Plus and
X. Unlocked versions of these phones that aren't sold through a carrier are
compatible on all four US carriers. The iPhones sold through Verizon or Sprint
can also be used on both CDMA and GSM networks, which means they are compatible
with AT&T and T-Mobile. But iPhones sold through AT&T and T-Mobile don't
include modems

RE: A nice recorder

2018-02-18 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
And RecUp which used to be Dropvox is also a super-simple recorder which allows
you to save recordings in MP3 format to a Dropbox folder which means that if
you have Dropbox set up on your PC the recordings will automatically be there
without having to download anything. You can also set up RecUp so it starts
recording as soon as you open the app.

Just Press Record, which is $4.99 is also a very good app. It tries to do
transcriptions if you want.
It saves to iCloud Drive or on your device.
Like all recording apps that I know of, the length is dependent on how much
room you have on your storage device.

It limits the number of recordings, then requires you to make a purchase at
$4.95 for unlimited recording.

I think this will be a good replacement for the Voxie recorder. It is even a
bit easier to use.

There are other apps that allow this kind of download, but I have to say, my
brief look at iRecorder would suggest that it is one of the easiest at the
lowest price.
It appears it is free though it mentions in app purchases. Gordon, did you
need to buy any extra features? If so, how much?

Is it one light that changes color? If it is bright enough TapTapSee might work
if Seeing AI'S color channel doesn't.
Or, you might try one that is called, color inspector.
