Go to the Podcast link. You should check daily because they post stuff
little by little rather than one large podcast. if you use podcast
software, or have a Victor Reader Stream you can subscribe to the Blind

I've started seeing rumors on YouTube that the iPhone X will stop

production in early summer due to low demand. Time will tell, and

Apple will reveal more at their WWDC event in June and later the fall

press event when they reveal the new iPhone/iOS versions and features.

I was ready for a new phone last summer, but waited for the event on

the new phone last fall, and decided the new phones weren't for me. I

ended up getting a 7 Plus, which I am very happy with.

Please explain then?
Because the email sounds like your putting your phone into a holder on these
cardboard glasses that sit on your face.
So, I thought the same thing.
Trying to picture your phone sitting on your face.
That doesn't appear to be a smart move if that's the case.

Hi Sandy,
No, apple hasn't done anything on this market yet. It is a new market and it is
not profitable yet. However there are ways to use your phone as a smart glass.
It is what I did and what I do when I want to use a better camera and the
compass.
Google has 2 great ideas about this. There is the google cardboard. It is a
simple peace of cardboard that you are going to use on your eyes. You pay for
it, it is around $15 on amazon, and they come already folded and ready to use.
Also if you want you can pay for the head straps that are going to hold the
google cardboard on your head because you will need to put your iPhone inside
the google cardboard. This choice has pros and cons.
Pros: it is the cheapest choice, and for learning is great due to the low cost.
Cons:
They are a little bit uncomfortable, and they are not very durable.
Now, here is the best choice that I have found, and they are what I use when I
need to do activities with a lot of movement. The google daydream. The cost is
100 dollars. Don't buy the google daydream first edition. Google released a
newer version on October 2017, and it is the best. In the google daydream
second edition or google daydream view you will put your iPhone, and you are
able to do what you want. This device is made with fiber so it is more
comfortable, also it comes with 3 straps so it will not fall.
What are the pros and cons?
Pros: it is cheaper than any other smart glass, and you are able to put an
iPhone also.
It is made in fiber so it is more comfortable.
Cons:
This is a virtual reality headset, so the camera will be cover. However what I
did and what many other blind people have done is ask someone to help you doing
a hole on the google daydream on the area where the iPhone camera lens will be.
I use the google daydream when I am on activities with a lot of movement.
The vision 800 glasses are fashion but they are also fragile, so I don't use
them when I need to run or move a lot.

RE: Using Smart Glasses with apps on the phone?

2018-03-22 Thread Jeremy Gilley
Please explain then?
Because the email sounds like your putting your phone into a holder on these
cardboard glasses that sit on your face.
So, I thought the same thing.
Trying to picture your phone sitting on your face.
That doesn't appear to be a smart move if that's the case.

Do I understand this correctly, you are basically strapping your camera to
your face in front of your eyes with these Google Daydream things?

Hi Sandy,
No, apple hasn't done anything on this market yet. It is a new market and it
is not profitable yet. However there are ways to use your phone as a smart
glass. It is what I did and what I do when I want to use a better camera and
the compass.
Google has 2 great ideas about this. There is the google cardboard. It is a
simple peace of cardboard that you are going to use on your eyes. You pay
for it, it is around $15 on amazon, and they come already folded and ready
to use. Also if you want you can pay for the head straps that are going to
hold the google cardboard on your head because you will need to put your
iPhone inside the google cardboard. This choice has pros and cons.
Pros: it is the cheapest choice, and for learning is great due to the low
cost.
Cons:
They are a little bit uncomfortable, and they are not very durable.
Now, here is the best choice that I have found, and they are what I use when
I need to do activities with a lot of movement. The google daydream. The
cost is 100 dollars. Don't buy the google daydream first edition. Google
released a newer version on October 2017, and it is the best. In the google
daydream second edition or google daydream view you will put your iPhone,
and you are able to do what you want. This device is made with fiber so it
is more comfortable, also it comes with 3 straps so it will not fall.
What are the pros and cons?
Pros: it is cheaper than any other smart glass, and you are able to put an
iPhone also.
It is made in fiber so it is more comfortable.
Cons:
This is a virtual reality headset, so the camera will be cover. However what
I did and what many other blind people have done is ask someone to help you
doing a hole on the google daydream on the area where the iPhone camera lens
will be.
I use the google daydream when I am on activities with a lot of movement.
The vision 800 glasses are fashion but they are also fragile, so I don't use
them when I need to run or move a lot.

they could be useful with apps like Be My Eyes or Seeing AI, BiSpecular or
Periscope. I don't want to invest in Aira (if that is spelt right) I prefer
to buy some off the shelf ones, like those from PivotHead, which are much
cheaper and seem to be better technology. Using just my phone for
assistance, wlking around with it directed in front of me, looks like an
invitation to be mugged! I'd even mug myself!! But with some discrete
glasses, I would be less vulnerable, plus, I would get info on where my face

Some keyboards have a button to hide or show the on-screen keyboard. If the
K480 does not then you would have to switch it off so the on-screen keyboard

Hi Sandy,
No, apple hasn't done anything on this market yet.
The
vision 800 glasses are fashion but they are also fragile, so I don't use them
when I need to run or move a lot.

Hello list,

So recently I was getting close to maxing out on my iPhone SE storage. I went
into the iPhone storage to see what I could clear out or what was taking up all
the space.

Not surprising for me that it was VoiceDream Reader. Anyway, I clicked on the
app itself and went down the screen where it told me the app and document size.
Past the delete app option to where is says recommendations. Below
recommendations, there’s an edit button and below that, there is I guess a list
of files contained within VDR.

This is where I’m encountering the bug. In the list, Voiceover doesn’’t speak
the names of the files. There’s apparently a rotor option to either activate or
delete the item I’m on, but since I have no feedback on the name of the file…
Clicking on the edit button doesn’t change anything either. Same list with the
same rotor actions and same unspoken feedback from VoiceOver.

This list of files only seems to appear in VDR. It’s not present in the Bard or
other storage apps like OneDrive/Google Drive in the storage subsetting.

Anyway, I got my sighted wife to help me and with her reading out the names of
the larger size files, I was able to clear up around 8 GB of storage just by
deleting some old audiobooks from VDR. The other thing is that while I had
previously deleted a lot of the titles contained in the list after having
listened to them, it seems that they’re not entirely deleted from the device or
app.

This is on my iPhone SE running iOS 11.2.6.

Anyone else have the same issue?

Re: question about the iPhone X

2018-03-22 Thread Wayne Merritt
I've started seeing rumors on YouTube that the iPhone X will stop
production in early summer due to low demand. Time will tell, and
Apple will reveal more at their WWDC event in June and later the fall
press event when they reveal the new iPhone/iOS versions and features.
I was ready for a new phone last summer, but waited for the event on
the new phone last fall, and decided the new phones weren't for me. I
ended up getting a 7 Plus, which I am very happy with.

RE: updating my payment method on my iCloud storage on my iPhone

2018-03-22 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Go to the first item in Settings where it says your name followed by "Apple Id,
iCloud, iTunes and App Store".
Double tap on Payment and Shipping
Double tap your current payment method, it will most likely say Mastercard, a
bunch of bullets and the last 4 digits of your card.
You will most likely be asked for your iPhone unlock PIN, after you enter it
you can edit your first name, last name, credit card number, expiry date, CVV,
phone number and billing address.
If all you have to do is put in a different card number just tap on the card
number field and enter your new card number. I don't think you have to specify
whether it's a Visa or Mastercard, it will recognize this automatically.
Then enter the expiry date and CV code of your new card, once you are done
double tap on "Save' at the top left corner and it's done.

Subject: updating my payment method on my iCloud storage on my iPhone

Hi I had to get A new credit card.

So I have to replace my one that was paying for my i Cloud storage on my iPhone.

So how do I once I tap on my name and get to where it says the name of the card
that I am currently using.

How then do I remove that card and replace it with the new one?

The card that I am currently using is A master card.

And the new card is A visa so I need to change that as well.

So how do you make those changes on the phone or is it easier to do it on the
computer?

If it is easier to do it on the computer then where do you go and make thos
same changes?

Nothing else has changed just my payment method.

So look for assistance with this.

Would you send your note to

I will do likewise, but your note is well written and all the feedback he gets

Hello list,
So recently I was getting close to maxing out on my iPhone SE storage. I went
into the iPhone storage to see what I could clear out or what was taking up all

RE: Using Smart Glasses with apps on the phone?

Do I understand this correctly, you are basically strapping your camera to your
face in front of your eyes with these Google Daydream things?

Subject: RE: Using Smart Glasses with apps on the phone?

Hi Sandy,
No, apple hasn't done anything on this market yet.
The
vision 800 glasses are fashion but they are also fragile, so I don't use them
when I need to run or move a lot.

Anthony,

This is absolutely the wrong list to post your item for sale.

Furthermore, since you have been a member of this community since October 31,
2014, you are well aware of the list policy that requires members to first
obtain permission before posting any items for sale, on-list.

Since you blatantly disregarded this policy, I have suspended your posting

Go to the Podcast link. You should check daily because they post stuff
little by little rather than one large podcast. if you use podcast
software, or have a Victor Reader Stream you can subscribe to the Blind

Hi Arlene,

There are several new gestures that perform functions that were performed
with the Home button on previous phones. Some functions are taken over by
the side button. There are AppleVis podcasts that explain the differences.
I'm pretty sure David Woodbridge did some on his iSee podcast as well, and
Jonathan Mosen demonstrates them on his Blind Side podcast.

Best,
Anna

updating my payment method on my iCloud storage on my iPhone

2018-03-22 Thread Casey

Hi I had to get A new credit card.

So I have to replace my one that was paying for my i Cloud storage on my
iPhone.

So how do I once I tap on my name and get to where it says the name of
the card that I am currently using.

How then do I remove that card and replace it with the new one?

The card that I am currently using is A master card.

And the new card is A visa so I need to change that as well.

So how do you make those changes on the phone or is it easier to do it
on the computer?

If it is easier to do it on the computer then where do you go and make
thos same changes?

Nothing else has changed just my payment method.

So look for assistance with this.

VoiceOver/VoiceDream Reader bug

2018-03-22 Thread Cristóbal
Hello list,

So recently I was getting close to maxing out on my iPhone SE storage. I
went into the iPhone storage to see what I could clear out or what was
taking up all the space.

Not surprising for me that it was VoiceDream Reader. Anyway, I clicked on
the app itself and went down the screen where it told me the app and
document size. Past the delete app option to where is says recommendations.
Below recommendations, there’s an edit button and below that, there is I
guess a list of files contained within VDR.

This is where I’m encountering the bug. In the list, Voiceover doesn’’t
speak the names of the files. There’s apparently a rotor option to either
activate or delete the item I’m on, but since I have no feedback on the name
of the file… Clicking on the edit button doesn’t change anything either.
Same list with the same rotor actions and same unspoken feedback from
VoiceOver.

This list of files only seems to appear in VDR. It’s not present in the Bard
or other storage apps like OneDrive/Google Drive in the storage subsetting.

Anyway, I got my sighted wife to help me and with her reading out the names
of the larger size files, I was able to clear up around 8 GB of storage just
by deleting some old audiobooks from VDR. The other thing is that while I
had previously deleted a lot of the titles contained in the list after
having listened to them, it seems that they’re not entirely deleted from the
device or app.

This is on my iPhone SE running iOS 11.2.6.

Anyone else have the same issue?

Cristobal

Anthony, I don't have the logitech k780, but it's 1 of a few other bluetooth
keyboards that we're considering getting. As soon as we get to shop around
for them, I'll write here and let you and everyone else know what we got. I
could send you a list of keyboards that I got between here and another
group, and also we talked to a sales associate at walmart one night about
the keyboards and they had several keyboards about 8 or 9 of them so we'd
like to check those out. I could give you some of those model numbers and a
friend recomended the apple bluetooth keyboard. Have you had any experience
with any bluetooth keyboards? Thanks.

Re: question about the iPhone X

2018-03-22 Thread Woody Anna Dresner
Hi Arlene,

There are several new gestures that perform functions that were performed with
the Home button on previous phones. Some functions are taken over by the side
button. There are AppleVis podcasts that explain the differences. I'm pretty
sure David Woodbridge did some on his iSee podcast as well, and Jonathan Mosen
demonstrates them on his Blind Side podcast.

Best,
Anna

For $179.95 I'll stick with seriously high quality sound over the ear
headphones and deal with comfort and possibly warm ears and stick with my $20
wrist speaker for walking without blocking my ears.

Anyway, I use them all day every day. I use a head set for work all day with

for audiobook listening, podcasting and general stuff on my iPhone when I’m
away from my PC. I would consider myself a heavy iPhone user and a charge
pretty much gets me through the day.

I also use them when I’m on my treadmill or stationary bike. Convenient in that
my ears don’t get all hot and I can crank the volume up without feeling
disorientated. They’re not going to win you any style points though. My wife
calls my Trekz those trekkie looking headphones.

Call quality while ok, it’s probably not going to be able to replace a headset
meant for talking on the phone full time.

Anyway, I like my Trekz Air for the break they give my eardrumbs and
convenience. For $150 though, they’re not cheap.

I have used them. I have a somewhat large head, so the Aftershokz were too
tight and uncomfortable to wear, but the sound quality was good, though I think
the battery life isn't great.

You can usually return them within 30 days for a refund.

So, it might be worth trying, if you can be sure you can return them if you
don't like them.

Some folks on this list love them, but there is nothing better than trying them
for yourself.

I do not have any hearing problems, but since I use headsets while I am using
my computer, my iPad, my iPhone, and even my android tablet, I thought
protecting my ear drums against potential damage is a good idea. I am also
thinking that keeping my ear open to know my surrounding while walking in the
streets and using navigation, a bone conducting headset is theoretically the
most appropriate.

I am just not sure if it is worth to throw away over 100 bucks to try. For
this I hope to get a feedback from those among you who have used them.

Hi,
I have been working on my family tree for over 20 years, but now want
to get the data onto my IPhone 8. I don't currently have an ancestry

Is there an accessible family tree / genealogy app available and does
it come with gedcom import capabilities?

Thanks,

RE: question about the iPhone X

2018-03-22 Thread pablocmd2014
I have an iPhone X, and the lack of home button was a problem that took7
seconds to be fixed. More problems with the iPhone X?
No, no accessibility problems, no any other problem.

Re: audio CSUN interviews, where can I find them?

2018-03-22 Thread Wayne Merritt
In past years, as others have said, Blind Bargains has posted quite
afew interviews from CSUN up to 2 or 3 weeks after the conference
itself. If you want other news from the conference more as it happens,
you could always friend/follow people on social media, or search for
the hash tag for this year's conference on social media, which I
believe is #CSUN18.

Does anyone know of an equilizer that I can use with both an IPhone 8+ and

Re: audio CSUN interviews, where can I find them?

2018-03-22 Thread Richard Turner

Sandy,
I guess there was only one so far from Blind Bargains. I know in past years,
sometimes the bulk of their interviews came out after CSUN.
But the app does have an audio tab at the bottom which will bring up all of
their audio podcasts/interviews.
I've seldom run across others doing such in depth interviews at CSUN.
So, I guess we may just have to wait.
I'm looking forward to them as well since I chose not to go in person both
because of the expense, and I hate crowds.
Later,
Richard

RE: Using Smart Glasses with apps on the phone?

2018-03-22 Thread pablocmd2014
Hi Sandy,
No, apple hasn't done anything on this market yet.
The
vision 800 glasses are fashion but they are also fragile, so I don't use them
when I need to run or move a lot.

Re: Bone conduction headsets, Are they worth buying?

2018-03-22 Thread Kelby Carlson
There are much, much cheaper bluetooth headphones out there, though
usually earbud models. From what I have heard of the audio quality, I
see no good reason to by these. If you want to use something like
Soundscape (an ostensibly "free" app that will actually cost as much as
you are willing to pay for headphones) you will need them for the 3D
audio. I have heard decent things about Aftershokz, but I obtained a
pair of Sennheiser headphones for half the price (though admittedly not
bluetooth) so I consider them very much not worth it at this point.

I do have a serious hearing issue in my right ear; when I was 16 years
old I had to have the right basically “gutted” because of a chronic
ear infection.  The doctor removed those three little bones, the ear
drum and a bit of other tissue that was infected.  As a result the
hearing in that ear is very compromised, but it did not affect the
nerves making bone conduction very effective in giving me very close
to normal hearing with bone conduction devices.

I do have several such devices including a Bluetooth bone conduction
headset with a microphone and another bone conduction headset
deploying a 3/8 MM jack connection.

Both of them afford me excellent stereophonic hearing; in fact the
first time I used the Bluetooth headset I was amazed to be able to
hear music in full stereo so well. I will caution you though, if you
opt for the Bluetooth type of headset the microphone has been fairly
distorted so using it with my iPhone for telephone calls is somewhat
“iffy.”  Now, of course, the Bluetooth headphones are about 3 years
old so possibly this issue has been corrected and perhaps another
brand would have been better to begin with.

However, the hardwired headset is excellent (in my opinion) for
listening and conversing.  And it is very useful to be able to walk
around with the iPhone streamed through the “out of ear” headsets so a
blind person (as I am) can continue to use hearing for awareness of
environment.

I do not have any hearing problems, but since I use headsets while I

I am just not sure if it is worth to throw away over 100 bucks to

Re: Maps and directions

2018-03-22 Thread Richard Turner
Tom,
I just figured out how to get directions from Apple Maps without starting the
route.
When you look up a destination, you get a distance with a street name, then a
go button.
Instead of double tapping on the go button, double tap on the distance.
Then you get each step listed with a done button in the upper right.

YOU can also first pick Drive, Walk, or Ride before doing that.
They used to have a button I thought for listing directions, but I usually use
Google Maps until recently, I more often go back to Apple Maps.
HTH,
Richard

Subject: Can’t lock the screen when using the Bard app

I had not used the Bard app in quite some time. Then yesterday, I got a book
that I have been wanting to read but haven’t bought the Audible version. It’s
now on bard, so I started reading it and discovered that the screen cannot be
locked while book is playing. I thought that you could lock the screen. Maybe
my memory is wrong, or maybe that’s changed somewhere along the way. It’s
really unfortunate, as it is a huge battery drain and really, why should you
have to have the screen open if you’re listening to audio? It seems a strange
oversight.

question about the iphone x

2018-03-22 Thread Arlene
Anthony, how do you like your iphone x and how is it to navigate? One of the
sales associates from one of the t-mobile stores here is an apple master and
goes to a lot of training and conferrences for apple products and he was
telling us the iphone x isn't as accessible as the past versions of the
iphone. thank you.

Re: red herring

2018-03-22 Thread Donna
I just downloaded both of the Red Herring games, Red Herring & Red Herring
Express. With voiceover on all elements of the game are read. The problem is
when dragging the items to its correct column the dragging gesture doesn't
work. An example is there is a list of colors, the word CAT is in the color
list. The word BLUE is in a different column of words. The word BLUE needs to
be dragged to the word CAT. In preforming the drag gesture voiceover does not
announce any of the elements on the game so the player does not know where the
item being moved is being moved to the correct column or place. So no Red
Herring is not accessible to voiceover users. And if someone has figured out
how to drag items into the correct column with voiceover on, please share.
