Re: Stylus for handwriting?

2018-04-18 Thread Gadget Girl
Hello Harry. I got some number 2 pencil styluses from Griffin Technologies
for $8.49, some time ago. I did a search on their website and unfortunately,
they are sold out. You can use any stylus with a capacitor tip to mimic your
fingertip. I did an experiment and one pencil mimics 1 fingertip; Two pencils
mimic 2 fingertips; Three pencils mimic 3 fingertips. I only have 3 pencil
styluses, so I don’t know about the 4-finger gestures, but I am assuming a
fourth stylus would work as a fourth finger. When I put a rubber band around
the three pencil styluses, I was able to do a 3-finger swipe with them. Also a
2-finger swipe with them. I can also do tap gestures with them as well. In
conclusion, I would suggest you do a search for styluses with capacitor tips
and you should be good. Hope this helps.

Regards,
Gadget Girl

Re: Swiping or tapping?

2018-04-18 Thread Anna Dresner
Hello Harry,

One thing you could try is going to VoiceOver Settings and choosing Practice
Gestures. Then the person could try flicking and tapping. Maybe if they get
specific feedback from VoiceOVer about which gesture they are doing, and they
have the security of knowing that their gestures won't hurt anything, they'll
be able to figure out ways to have the flick interpreted correctly.

Best,
Anna

In addition to this Smart speed feature, if you do choose to speed up a podcast

Re: turning vo on in new phone

2018-04-18 Thread Michael Feir
Hi Lary. Try clicking the home button three times in quick succession. That
should start it talking during the setup process. If it's already set up,
you could use Siri. Simply hold down the home button until you hear a beep
and then say: "Turn on voiceover". If all else fails, get someone sighted
to go to settings, general, accessibility, voiceover and tap the on/off
button in the Voiceover settings.

Swiping or tapping?

2018-04-18 Thread Harry Bell
I'm helping other blind folk locally with using VoiceOver on iPhone and iPad
and I've net several people who have nerve damage affecting fingers and when
they try to do a swipe gesture, the touchscreen interprets their action as a
tap rather than a swipe, which messes things up a lot. Has anyone any
experience of any work around for such situations?
When researching this, I did hear that a gadget called an O6 could work with
voiceover and enter swiped as well as double taps? Is this right?

I didn’t have to pay a premium for features that are of no use to me. Either
way, if there’s a refreshed version of the SE or with the new phones coming
out in September or even last year’s models, it’ll maybe be a good time to
upgrade at a reasonable price.

Who knows if there’s even an SE upgrade . . . that it’ll be focused more for
the developing world market anyway.

Stylus for handwriting?

2018-04-18 Thread Harry Bell
Does anyone know of a stylus which I could use with voiceover handwriting on
iPhone 7 Plus and iPad 6 on iOS 11.3? I’m looking for something cheaper than
the Apple Pencil! And do you know if the stylus can do swipes too or is that
reserved for fingers?
Thanks
Harry

Coded Telephone Numbers in Messages Not Working

2018-04-18 Thread Bill Gallik
Used to be that a telephone number complete with various codes could be sent
via Messaging and the recipient could simply double-tap that line and iOS would
recognize it as a telephone and dial it along with the pause directives and
additional access codes. I tried doing this for a telephone conference last
week and when additional information followed the telephone number the line
wasn’t recognized as a telephone number so would not initiate a call.

For example, last summer I could send an iMessage with a line such as follows:

(999) 888-,1234#

and the call would be made, pausing as indicated by the “,” (comma) and then
entering that access code and completing that call with the call placed into a
conference.

That doesn’t happen anymore. If the line has only the telephone num
  - without the comma and subsequent access code - that is recognized and the
call is made.

BTW: This still works if the phone number, pause-directing commas and
subsequent access code is placed in the telephone number cell in CONTACTS.

Or, am I doing something wrong in the iMessages?

Hi Arlene,

Thank you very much for all your helpful suggestions. She has been using

Mike, you're a wonderful friend to her, and that's exactly what I was
thinking as I said in my other message with her interest in having an ipad

to try both the ipad and the phone as well so she could see what would be

Actually what I'm trying to talk her into is to borrow an iPhone or iPad
and play around with each of them to find out what level of difficulty she
might have with either device. Going by what anyone suggests will not be
good since only she knows the amount of dexterity she has and by actual
useage she can determine which device puts the least amount of stress on her
hands / fingers. She will also need to determine if the braces she wears on
each thumb will hinder her in any way with gestures. I want to thank you
all again because with what information you've provided it'll help her make
a decision on her own to a large degree.

I don’t think it would be a good idea to talk somebody such as the person
you describe into buying anything. You can tell her what she can do with
these devices and encourage her to maybe go to an Apple Store and try out an
iPad or iPhone but I’d hate to talk somebody into buying such an expensive
device only so they can find out they can’t use it.

for some reason she wants an iPad. Maybe now when I read her these messages
she'll change her mind. She uses a Revere cell phone that she would for
phone calls, but like all of you, I feel the iPhone would be her best

Correct, you can’t send regular SMS messages with an iPad unless you also
have an iPhone on the same WiFi network or you are using some sort of app. I
believe in the US google Voice would allow you to use your iPad much like a

Yes, if you have an iPhone and an iPad, there is a setting that will allow
you to receive calls on the iPad if the iPhone is in range.

You can also double tap on a contact phone number on the iPad and make a
call, again if the iPhone is in range.

But, without an iPhone, you would use FaceTime or Skype.

As for text messages, you can text using your email address to other Apple
device owners with an iPad, but I do not think you can text to a non-Apple
device. That one I'm not sure of, so take that with a grain of salt.

It isn’t a deal breaker..Another thing that I have noticed; I’ a member of the

pronnnounce the group name as 6 iPhone. After that voiceover pronounces the

It seems to be saying something like a combination of emodican and the old

So, if you want to change its pronunciation, you could add it to the
dictionary under VoiceOver, Speech, pronunciations. I substituted a g for
the j so it says emogi, which is still slightly different, but only two
 syllables at least.

I'd also write Apple Accessibility and tell them you want the old
