Xfinity XFIPods and iPhone Setup

2018-05-14 Thread Robin Frost
Hi,
While it’s true that these devices don’t directly relate to iPhone use since
you use your iPhone exclusively to set them up if you use that platform of
course I thought it relevant to anyone on this list who might be a Comcast
customer.

In case anyone had been anticipating the arrival of these devices for Comcast
Xfinity internet customers and wondering what they’d be like and how accessible
their setup would be let me assure you that Comcast as has become the custom of
recent years have outdone themselves in creating an experience that is both
easy, intuitive for all and accessible too.
I ordered the devices Thursday afternoon and they arrived Saturday. Their
packaging is of very high quality. The devices are compact but feel very solid
to the touch. But more importantly the setup process in Comcast’s Xfinity XFI
app was seamless, intuitive, easy as can be and accessible at least on iOS
devices from beginning to end. I can’t speak to the Android side as I don’t
have a device running it but I’ve no doubt that if it isn’t yet, it soon will
be accessible on that device as well. True to the description setup took less
than ten minutes and the end user needed to know practically next to nothing
more than their own internet user name and password and how to follow prompts
to get things up and running.
For those who’ve worked with mesh internet systems before the experience will
be quite familiar but even for those with no prior experience with such devices
worry not should you choose to implement them in your environs the entire
process from ordering to setup will be a breeze.
I just thought I’d post just in case others like myself had been anticipating
their arrival and wondered what it’d be like to get them up and going.
All of my devices including iDevices and Sonos speakers along with pc’s and
other internet connected things are happily up and running.
Take good care.
Robin

I think you'll need to buy a better/newer router. I like the TP-Link C7.

Do you mean you want to plug more devices into your router than it has ports?
If so just look for a 5-port or 8-port desktop switch
which all companies make, Linksys, D-Link, Netgear etc.
You use one of the ports of your router (most of them have 4 ports) and plug in
the desktop switch and then you have those 5 or 8
ports available (depending on which one you buy). I have a Cisco 16-port small
business switch at my store which has 8 regular and 8
POE ports power over ethernet, those are ports used for example if you have Ip
phones which need the network connection but also
require power). Often you can power POE devices with a separate adapter, but if
you have POE ports on your router the CAD5E or CAD6
cable provides the power for the device as well as the wired connection to your
network

Here is one example:
NETGEAR 5-port Gigabit Desktop Switch in Metal Case - Essentials Edition (GS305)

Hi, what solutions do people have when your router can no longer accept any
more pods/pads/phones/etc?

A device to hook to an rj45 port/socket would be good.

Thoughts please?

Re: Lost Keyboard, Contacts Losing Focus

2018-05-14 Thread Deidre Muccio
Dulce

You must have accidentally hit a different tab and gotten off the keyboard. Go
to Contacts or Mail or wherever you are and select keyboard at the bottom of
each page you're going to have that option. For any any app where you need to
enter data like phone.
Go to the roter or when you're in contacts and see what it's on. Maybe if you
put it on headings and you get beyond the first few lines by swiping to the
right, and you get to The entries starting with a and you flipped down you
will get to BCDEFG and so on. I'm not using 11 three though so if the gestures
are different I can't help you.

Re: weather gods question

2018-05-14 Thread Kelly Pierce
Weather Gods delivers a 24 hour now cast notification when the user
travels at least 10 miles or 15 kilometers. The follow me setting
needs to be enabled.
The distance limit was a nod to those in big cities who were getting
notifications on a daily commute, even though they had not left their
city.

The app has a Norwegian translation created by a VoiceOver end user in Norway.

2018-05-14 Thread Anna Dresner
I've heard that it's supposed to work worldwide, but I haven't tried it outside
the U.S. so don't know whether that's true.

Re: Shared From Seeing AI

2018-05-14 Thread Richard Turner
I'm sure Sandra was pointing out that the Product channel in Seeing AI can give
you more information about a product just like the $1300 ID Mate, but forgot to
put some text in the body of the message and just shared the attached document.
I did not realize attachments are accepted on GoogleGroups.
So, I learned something from this. Thank you Sandra.

Lost Keyboard, Contacts Losing Focus

2018-05-14 Thread Dulce Muccio Weisenborn
Hi, All. My keyboard no longer shows up. How do I get it back? Also, when i
try to focus on a contact, my 6S loses focus and tells me I have 407 contacts.
The only remedy is to flick up from the very last contacts until I get back to
the desired one. Is this fixable?

RE: Follow up to a posting about accessible bluetooth kitchen scales

2018-05-14 Thread Cristóbal
Hi Sieghard,

I should have been more clear, the Vox scale I was referring to is the Vox 3000
model. I have also tried a couple of the new models which I think are the Vox
5000 scales if that’s the one you say you have. Its platform is indeed square
and the little display with the buttons has a rubbery texture if I remember
correctly. I at two different times bought two of those scales and in both
instances, they crapped out on me within a month. I didn’t even bother with all
the returns and warranty and just returned them to Amazon.

I will say, the whole taking time to open the app thing really isn’t something
I notice any more since I usually have my phone in my pocket and just launch it
real quick while I’m gathering up what are usually things like the coffee
beans/tea, the grinder, measuring cup, water and so on. It was something that
I thought was going to bug me more, but it turned out not to be a big deal if
at all.

Like I said since I have the app go straight to the scale feature, it’s really
just double tapping on the app icon to open it and zero it out once I’m ready
to measure whatever it is I’m getting ready to make.

I will say too, the readings are much faster than what the My Weigh scales
offer as they’re pretty much instantaneous and again, if you’re on the current
weight field, VO will speak them automatically. I actually find this to be
faster than with the Vox scales even when they worked for me.

Again, my first preference would be just to have any of the Vox scales be more
durable, but this at a reduced price isn’t really so bad.

Now, if you see me write in a couple of weeks complaining on how this Drop
Kitchen scale just died on me, then I apparently have to go get some voodoo
cleaning done in my kitchen to rid myself of any little gremlins that are
messing with me and my stuff.

Hi Cristóbal,

You must have bad luck with the My Weigh talking scales. I had my first one for
close to 20 years and it did not work any more at some point last November. I
contacted the company and they also have a partner here in Canada (probably
their distributor) where I sent the scale along with a money order and they
sent me a new one. This one is a bit different, I guess it’s the newer model
which doesn’t come with the plastic bowl any more, but I have used it now since
last November without any issues whatsoever.

I’m glad to hear the Drop scale is accessible and has the simple scale
function, but as you also pointed out, you would prefer a talking scale and in
this case so do I, having to grab the phone, unlock it, open an app and do all
that every time I want to weigh what might be one of 8 or 10 ingredients in a
cake recipe sounds like entirely too much trouble.Too bad nobody has made one
yet which works with Alexa.

As for the other one you mentioned I would call this a case where you get what
you pay for, can’t expect too much with a $20 scale. When my My Weigh stopped
working I initially had also ordered another talking scale from Amazon, I think
it was called “Jobar”, but it had a horrible voice and I didn’t like how it
worked.

Sieghard

Hello list,

Towards the end of last year, I posted a sort of query/rant about Bluetooth
kitchen scales and how I was having no luck with the MY Weigh Vox talking
scales. No matter how careful I was, the vox scales would unfailingly crap out
on me only after a few months at the most. At the time of that post, the two of
my vox scales died within days apart of each other during the Christmas
holidays. Being stuck without an accessible scale was not fun. That and they
were already replacements of replacements of replacements… My Weigh did swap
them out for me and at least that time, they didn’t even charge me the standard
$25 fee. I just had to pay shipping for both of the scales to Arizona. Came out
to something like $10.

Anyway, the most recent Vox 3000 scale replacement I got towards the middle of
January and this time . . . it lasted all the way to mid-March…

In the meantime, I had been checking out some Bluetooth kitchen scales for
accessible alternatives as it seems that My Weigh really is the only
manufacturer that makes talking kitchen scales that can weigh to the gram. And
as it appears that I’m more or less Charlie Brown when it comes to vox scales,
I didn’t want to continue to play the swap out

Agreed, Sieghard. Lol Cheap wine can be quite delicious--and as anyone in the
industry can tell you, price is not indicative of quality.

Also, she probably sent it to the list by mistake. Calm down.

I've also had very good luck with MyWeigh's kitchen scales. Their bathroom
scale--thI had the one where you had to tap it first with your foot before
fully stepping on to it. Anyhow, after a while, the voice readout and print
numbers weren't matching up at all. Of course, the kitchen scale doesn't get a
huge amount of use--it's my baking/portioning out ground meat scale, and I
don't do those things every day.

Thanks,
Ari

Both devices have iOS apps. The Perfect Bake Smart scale I ended up returning

To be clear, both these scales and their associated apps have the main focus on
interactive recipes with a heavy visual element to them. You follow a recipe
and you can see on the display how virtual bowls and what have you filling up

giving more of the impression of being a kid’s toy than anything else. In the
Perfect Bake Smart scale, there is an element where you can put VO focus on and
as the weight fluctuates, VO will announce the changes, but it kind of gets
lost with everything else on the screen. That and for me at least with this
model, I started to get all sorts of crazy readings into the thousand of grams.
I really didn’t play around with it much to see if I could figure out or
correct the weird readings since I knew within a couple of days I wasn’t going

Re: I.D. Mate bar code reader instead of iOS barcode app?

2018-05-14 Thread Caitlyn Furness
Hi,

I have the ID mate Galaxy reader. I love that thing!

I’m not sure about everyone else, but every time I try to use any bar code
reader on my i phone, I can never find the bar code. the ID mate makes it easy
because it’s multidirectional when it scans for a bar code, so you don’t have
to be that precise when looking for the bar code. for me, the database is
always current because I update when the updates come out twice a year. It’s
also easy to record your own codes and then up load them to the universal
database so they are included the next time an update comes out. I know the ID
mates are expensive compared to bar code reading apps on the i phone, but for
me, it was worth it.

JMO, of course

Re: I.D. Mate bar code reader instead of iOS barcode app?

2018-05-14 Thread 'Sandy Tomkins' via VIPhone
Richard,

I just sent in, don't know if it arrived, of a successful scan of a ottle
of wine. I, like you, find the Seeing Ai product channel very useful and it is
free!! The only things I have difficulty with are smallish tubes of cosmetic
creams. It finds the barcode easily, but can't seem to get a good enough
purchase, so, I get the fast beeps, but no result. I didn't know that if you
get the "not identified" message, it was worth trying again.

Something I noticed, when doing the wine, was that it works best with the
bottle upright and just rotate until you hear the beep. Most round containers
seem to need to be on their sides. I suppose it comes from wine had a life of
its own, and was not to be put on its side or shaken. Most modern wines
wouldn't notice if you put them in the spin-dryer!

I went over to my larder, intending to try the product reader on some jars,
as soon as I got near enough, phone in hand, not having decided which to try,
the app started beeping and reading whatever it saw, barcode-wise! I find it
excellent at spotting the smallest indication of a barcode. I do notice,
sometimes, once you get the fast beeps, but no "processing" message, it is
worth gently changing the angle of the phone, in a sort of circular movement,
it sometimes does the trick!

Sandy, waiting for happy hour!

RE: I.D. Mate bar code reader instead of iOS barcode app?

2018-05-14 Thread Rick Alfaro
Hi, adding my 2 cents, I have the Galaxy device and it works great once you get
past the boot time which is my one biggest complaint. Even though they have
shortened the boot time considerably with its last firmware by 13 seconds, I
find it is still too long which causes me to use one of the IOS solutions like
seeing AI or KNFB reader. Having said that however, the Galaxy is more
accurate. It’s what I use if I have several items to scan.

Someone is selling some I.D. Mate bar code readers on a buy/sell list I belong
to and while I’m somewhat interested, I’m wondering if ultimately, the app more
or less duplicates what the I.D. Mate bar code reader does? That or is the
singular task that the I.D. Mate bar code reader is designed for is that much
more superior at what it does that having a stand alone bar code scanning
device may be worth h having? Also, for the record, I am completely blind so
any features that the I.D. Mate bar code reader may have to assist folks with
low vision wouldn’t matter to me and not be some sort of plus for having the
device.

Would appreciate any input or observations.

Re: I.D. Mate bar code reader instead of iOS barcode app?

2018-05-14 Thread Richard Turner
OK, to help those who have struggled with the Seeing AI app's Product
identification, I tested it on a can of LeCroix sparking water. There is no
label, so you cannot use the seam as a location hint for the bar code, but have
to just turn the can until the beeps begin.
I started with the iPhone about 18 inches from the can, and when the beeps
started, I slowly moved the can closer to the iPhone. When it got between 4 and
6 inches away, the product was identified. That took no more than 10 seconds
and I think less.
I then tried it on a carton of heavy cream.
The first try, came back with product not identified. So I tried again and made
sure the side of the carton where the beeps had happened was straight on and it
worked. Again, I started about 18 inches away until the beeps started.
After the identification was made, I flicked right to the more info button and
double tapped, and got this result:
Darigold Whipping Cream Classic 36%, Heavy

Keep product refrigerated. For best quality, use within fifteen days after
opening. Especially for sauces and whipping. Farmer owned. Your local dairy.
Since 1918. This milk comes from cows not treated with the growth hormone-rBST
(According to the FDA, no significant difference has been shown between milk
derived from rbST treated and non-rbST treated cows) . Ultra-pasteurized. Thank
you for choosing Darigold. What is ultra-pasteurization. Ultra-pasteurization
is a process similar to regular pasteurization that simply uses pressure,
higher heat, and a shorter period of time. The product is then packaged on
special very clean filling machines. The high heat process and clean packaging
environment significantly extend the freshness period for milk and other
products like heavy whipping cream. No chemicals or preservatives are added to
the product as part of the ultra-pasteurization process. This advanced
technology extends the shelf life to 60+ days (the shelf life for regular
pasteurization is 21 days). Once the carton is opened, it is best used within
fifteen days. Grade A. A gluten free product.

So, for me, the slightly slower time compared to an ID Mate is well worth it so
I can save my money for more important purchases.
Just my two cents worth,

It is $79.99 in the US app store.
You can download just the US maps, or just Canada or both. Both take about 4
GB of space on your device.
It sounds like they are branching out into England and eventually will be
available in many countries, but who knows how long that will take.

Nearby Explorer gives much more feedback than Google Maps. In fact, it
gives similar feedback to Blind Square The advantage Nearby explorer has is
that it also does turn-by-turn directions, while Blind Square just tells you
about streets you are coming to and will give you some information about
directions and distance to your destination.
Now, Blind Square in combination with Google Maps gives both. It really
depends on the user which way is best.
  Nearby Explorer is quite customizable.

Do they update the maps or is it once you get the app and install it
and then down load the maps you have them and that is the way they are?

And if you are using the turn by turn spoken directions with this app?

How much vfeed back does it give you like something like google maps to
compare it to?

Hi
I might try and answer your question. You have set the work place as a
favourite, that part seems to be fine. Did you set up notifications for your
newly added favourite place as well? If you do that, you should receive
updates for your home and workplace as well. I have a few places set up like
that, where my son travels to on a regular basis, and I receive the forecasts
and notifications for those places. Hope this might solve your problem.

Hi all. I have a question. I live in Clifton Heights but work in Philadelphia.
When I gto Philadelphia for work, is there a way that I can get weather updates
for Philadelphia instead of getting updates from home? I added Philadelphia to
my favorite places but when I'm at work I still get updates about my home area.
