Re: Voiceover pronunciations

2018-05-15 Thread Richard Turner

I have no idea what you are referring to by what they did to the
pronunciations. What voice are you using, what specific pronunciations do you
not agree with, etc.
Blanket statements like that do not tell me anything.
So, if you could give more specifics, maybe there are work arounds, or you will
find others who agree and can begin contacting Apple to make some changes.

I purchased the Colortest 150 from APH in 2000. It was actually more expensive
than this new one, but at least at that time it was the only talking color
identifier that was available. I can say that even today it works flawlessly.
It actually tells you more than most folks need to know. I have found that when
used properly it can determine color better than the actual naked eye.

Sieghard, as usual, I agree completely with you!

My first thoughts as I was reading the initial message was, “I wonder the
price?”

When I “read” that (near) $500 price-tag I almost fell out of my chair!

Now please understand everybody, I certainly appreciate the information about
this new Color Star color identifier. It’s just that I have to ask why these
items seem always to be so exorbitantly priced. I realize all about the small
market those who might buy such “blind community” products represents and
recouping R expenses, but I still have to ask that question.

Subject: Xfinity XFIPods and iPhone Setup

Hi,

While it’s true that these devices don’t directly relate to iPhone use since
you use your iPhone exclusively to set them up if you use that platform of
course I thought it relevant to anyone on this list who might be a Comcast
customer.

In case anyone had been anticipating the arrival of these devices for Comcast
Xfinity internet customers and wondering what they’d be like and how accessible
their setup would be let me assure you that Comcast as has become the custom of
recent years have outdone themselves in creating an experience that is both
easy, intuitive for all and accessible too.

I ordered the devices Thursday afternoon and they arrived Saturday. Their
packaging is of very high quality. The devices are compact but feel very solid
to the touch. But more importantly the setup process in Comcast’s Xfinity XFI
app was seamless, intuitive, easy as can be and accessible at least on iOS
devices from beginning to end. I can’t speak to the Android side as I don’t
have a device running it but I’ve no doubt that if it isn’t yet, it soon will
be accessible on that device as well. True to the description setup took less
than ten minutes and the end user needed to know practically next to nothing
more than their own internet user name and password and how to follow prompts
to get things up and running.

For those who’ve worked with mesh internet systems before the experience will
be quite familiar but even for those with no prior experience with such devices
worry not should you choose to implement them in your environs the entire
process from ordering to setup will be a breeze.

I just thought I’d post just in case others like myself had been anticipating
their arrival and wondered what it’d be like to get them up and going.

All of my devices including iDevices and Sonos speakers along with pc’s and
other internet connected things are happily up and running.

Take good care.

Robin

Hello,

I wonder if any list member would be kind enough to shed some light on a
question that has interested me.

Some packages like Envision AI and TapTapSee allow you to save an image with
its description.

So when we use the Photos App as VoiceOver users when we browse our photos
library we here the description of the photo which makes it easier for us to
organise things.

As I understand it a sighted person does not see these labels but information
such as the location where the picture was taken is shown.

So there is a discrepancy between what we here and what people see.

So my question is that apart from Voiceover users are the labels that attached
to photos are only of use to Voiceover users or do they have some useful
purpose to the wider public?

I hope everyone is clear that I was simply sharing information.
I would no sooner spend that much on a color identifier, than I would several
times that for a bar code scanner.
But, since some people prefer stand-alone devices, at any ridiculous price, I
thought it was worth sharing.

On the bright side, it is less expensive than a previous color identifier that
they sold for over $700.

If I were to buy a stand alone color identifier, it would be the Rainbow II.

But, I can get close enough color and pattern descriptions from TapTapSee,
which is free.

But, it is very true that no app on the iPhone is going to be as accurate as a
stand alone device simply because of the limits of the iPhone camera.

That may be changing with the newest phones, I don't know as I am happy
sticking with my SE as long as possible which cost about what the Color Star is
priced at and it can do a lot more than tell me about colors. And, unless you
are a blind clothes designer, I am not sure you need to know a thousand
different shades.

How do I get notifications to completely read when my iPhone X with the latest OS version?

2018-05-15 Thread Kevin Minor
Hi.

I'm running into a frustrating issue with my iPhone X and the latest OS. When
the screen is locked and a message or notification is received, the only thing
that's read is who the thing came from. I'd like the complete content of the
message/notification to be read.

Thanks for any help on this.

Have a blessed day and don't work too hard.

RE: accessible Journal app

2018-05-15 Thread Alan Lemly
Sarai,

I don't journal myself but you might take a look at Drafts 5.0. It has both
free and subscription versions and from what I can tell, the free version is
pretty powerful. The files it creates are saved in txt format so you would be
able to access them easily with computers and other devices. It can save to
Dropbox and other cloud services and also has an option to append to a journal
file if you so choose. I'm not sure what dedicated journal apps provide but
unless I'm missing something, I'm thinking this is pretty much creating text
and Drafts has a lot of powerful features to do so and you might want to play
around with it. AppleVis has a fairly recent podcast on Drafts so you might
also check that out.

Good luck.

RE: Xfinity XFIPods and iPhone Setup

2018-05-15 Thread Rick Alfaro
Hi Robin. I must have missed the original message. Which Xfinity device are you
referring to? Is it their standard router with digital voice support, or are
you referring to some sort of mesh network device? That I haven’t seen yet?

Robin

Re: New color identifier, article from blind bargains

2018-05-15 Thread Andy Baracco
I purchased the Colortest 150 from APH in 2000. It was actually more expensive
than this new one, but at least at that time it was the only talking color
identifier that was available. I can say that even today it works flawlessly.
It actually tells you more than most folks need to know. I have found that when
used properly it can determine color better than the actual naked eye.

sandy,
Actually, you can write a message when you share text from Seeing AI.
You can touch in the body of the email and double tap and enter text as always.
I'm not sure what happened for you, but I just sent myself a test email after

RE: New color identifier, article from blind bargains

2018-05-15 Thread Richard Turner

2018-05-15 Thread englishrider91
The issue with any color-identifying app is the inconsistant lighting. With a
standalone device, the lighting is always consistant. Now, I'm not saying I'd
buy this device--my Rainbow was a lot cheeper and serves my needs well--but I
do think there's a market/need out there for standalone devices.

Hi Sarai,

Mac Journal is good and works well on my iPad and iPhone. You can also
sync across devices but only apple devices so no windows access. But
if the windows access is not a deal breaker for you, I highly
recommend this app.

APH Color Star Color Identifier can Identify 1,000 Shades, Speak Colors of LED
Lights, Identify Patterns

J.J. Meddaugh May 14, 2018
5:51 PM ET

The American Printing House for the Blind has refreshed their talking color
identifier with some modern features.
According to the description, the Color Star "recognizes more than 1,000
different color shades, identifies color contrast measurements, recognizes the
color of LED lights, perceives the light intensity in the surrounding
environment, and recognizes patterns – all with clear spoken voice output."
The new unit also charges via USB and includes stereo headphones. It's
available now for $449 from their online store.

APH's previous color identifier, the ColorTest II was discontinued in January
2018.

Whoa! nearly 500 dollars? that thing had better be able to make me
breakfast, as well. Given that it doesn't do anything that can't be
achieved without too much inconvenience with little to no money, I'd
say it's a hard no over here. Certainly it would be convenient, but
absolutely not worth that hefty price tag.

It's
available now for $449 from their online
store.
APH's previous color identifier, the ColorTest II was discontinued in January
2018.

Hi,

I've been doing some reading about Apple's Home Pods. One criticism I've run
across is that when the person whose phone is paired with the Home Pod is in
the house, anyone can read their text messages. Is that true? Is there a way
to prevent it?

Thanks.
