VoiceOver, Apple Maps, Yelp, and Google Trips Make for a Fabulous Vacation

2018-05-16 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Everyone,

I just returned from a 4-day mini vacation to Seattle, Washington.

I planned my entire sightseeing excursions using the Google Trips app. In
addition, I used the Apple Maps transit directions and walking directions
the entire time. All of this via VoiceOver. Oh, yes, I used Yelp,
extensively, also.

Seattle has a mono-rail, a light rail system, and several bus systems. It
is truly a metropolitan destination.

I stayed at a hotel in downtown Seattle. So, for example, I took the light
rail to the downtown area and then walked about 20 minutes to my hotel. The
Apple Maps directions were perfect. I really liked the fact that I could
easily track each train stop along the way so that I knew exactly where to
exit the coach. I did not realize, until this trip that one can use swiping
gestures to navigate along any transit route in order to monitor one's
progress along the route. Very, very impressive.

I won't bore you with the details but I will tell you that, thanks to the
Google Trips app, along with Apple Maps, and Yelp, I toured the Space
Needle, went to the Waterfall Garden Park, home of the original UPS store,
took an underground city tour, took a 1-hour harbor crews tour, explored
Pike Square, Pioneer Square, Bell Town, the Market Square, went to the
original Starbucks, took a ride on the largest Ferris Wheel on the west
coast, shopped at the new Amazon Go store (an absolutely amazing experience,
to say the least), and ate at some marvelous restaurants.

My point? I used public transportation, only. No Uber, Lift, or taxis.
Also, I decided what I was going to do, mostly on the fly, using the Google
Trips app.

Now I'm not saying that the trip didn't have its challenges, for example,
there is a lot of construction going on in downtown Seattle and I needed a
lot of sighted assistance in order to navigate around it, but I am saying
that I am certain I would not have had as much fun without my beloved iPHone
8 Plus and several very crucial apps such as Yelp, Apple Maps, the Amazon Go
app, and of course, Google Trips for iOS.

Now I am not suggesting that a blind or low vision person can rely on any
technology, alone, in order to explore a major city. After all, at this
point in history, technology is far from perfect. And, when it's all said
and done, what really made my vacation possible, was good old fashion people
skills as sighted assistance was absolutely necessary for many of the
activities described above. Be that as it may, with the help of technology,
I was able to independently explore the major city attractions and decide
how I wanted to spend my time.

Let me add that, while I had a backup battery with me, I did not use it.
The battery life on my 8 Plus was beyond amazing. Even after over 12 hours
of use, I didn't run out of juice. Regardless, I was glad to have a mobile
charging source with me, just in case.

While I had a lot of fun, I am delightfully exhausted and glad to be back.
For, as the saying goes, "there's no place like home." (smile)

Mark

Re: The best color identifyer that would work on an Iphone 5s

2018-05-16 Thread Richard Turner
Yes, different lighting conditions is an issue since some closets have
different level of lighting, not to mention bedrooms, stores, etc.
And, being able to get an idea of patterns is great!
I have a sighted wife, so if she is around, I will ask her. Otherwise, I would
use TapTapSee for now.

the Colorino; it has its own light.

The reason that I have two is that I dropped one, and it didn't work right.
Eventually, my husband got out his soldering iron and repaired it, so I do have
two that are working. I keep one in the bathroom near my clothes closets and
one in a drawer near the washer and dryer. I'd like to have an accurate one

I'm there, I want to know what color, and design would be a real help.

I had a question for everyone who participated in this thread:

Who uses a color identifier frequently? If so, is it part of a function that
needs checking in numerous lighting conditions?

I purchased the Colortest 150 from APH in 2000. It was actually more expensive
than this new one, but at least at that time it was the only talking color
identifier that was available. I can say that even today it works flawlessly.
It actually tells you more than most folks need to know. I have found that when
used properly it can determine color better than the actual naked eye.

How do I get the speaker to turn off on my iPhone SE, when it comes on in a
conversation. It has happened twice, and putting the phone to my ear does not
solve the problem. Actually, I did not realize I moved it that far from my ear
to cause it to go on speaker. I realize that the device is sensitive, so it
could be that some unnoticeable movement could have triggered it, but, oh my
goodness, what to do to stop it, please? Thanks.

RE: Home Pod and test messages

2018-05-16 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
It talks and listens to anybody just the same as when I pick up your iPhone and
press the home button and ask SIRI something. Siri may not react to "Hey SIRI"
except when you say it, but if I bring up SIRI with the home button and ask it
"What time is it" it will answer me just fine. Same problem is with any of
these assistants as far as I can tell, if a friend is at my house and wantts to
play a prank and says "Alexa", set an alarm at 3 AM when I'm not there to hear
it I'll get woken up by Alexa at 3 AM.

I don’t think that statement is completely true. I think that the Apple Home

RE: New color identifier, article from blind bargains

2018-05-16 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Bill,

It’s exactly because of the small market. I happen to have a piece of titanium
which was in my leg about 10 years ago when I broke both tibular and fibular
during a downhill ski accident. The hardware consists of a very interestingly
shaped titanium rod, about 14 inches long, which the orthopedic surgeon
inserted into the hollow middle (hollow apart from bone marrow I guess) and
then fixed into place with 3 screws at the top and the bottom. Obviously this
stabilized the broken tibular which was broken about 2 inches above the ankle.
Long story, but the point is that when he took it out 2 years later I asked if
I could keep it and while normally he said he is not supposed to do this, he
did sterilize it and put it along with the screws into a bag. He also told me
at that time the item costs about $1,000 and you certainly wonder why a piece
of titanium with a material value of maybe $10 has such a price tag, it’s
probably the same thing although I hazard a guess and say that they probably
produce and need a lot more such titanium rods to fix broken legs than they
manufcture colour identifiers for the blind yet still the makers of such
medical equipment charge so much.

Sieghard, as usual, I agree completely with you!

My first thoughts as I was reading the initial message was, “I wonder the
price?”

When I “read” that (near) $500 price-tag I almost fell out of my chair!

Now please understand everybody, I certainly appreciate the information about
this new Color Star color identifier. It’s just that I have to ask why these
items seem always to be so exorbitantly priced. I realize all about the small
market those who might buy such “blind community” products represents and
recouping R&D expenses, but I still have to ask that question.

If Safari works on wifi, but not on cellular, then go into settings, cellular,
and Safari will be in that long list of apps that can use cellular. Luckily,
this list is in alphabetical order. It must have gotten turned off some way.

If Safari was off, it wouldn't work on wifi, either. If you have solved the

Btw, am using 11.3.1 with apple SE.My settings in cellular are:
cellular data on;
cellular data options roaming is on.
personal hotspot is off.
Under the privacy settings, location services is on
That’s all I can think of to check.

Re: Reading by Line

2018-05-16 Thread Donna
When reading by line, if you flick up then flick down once the line will be
read properly. I’ve also noticed that in some instances every other line is
read properly. And if the, in my case, when my iPhone is in landscape things
are read properly, no first letter of each line isn’t dropped. So in a sense
landscape mode is a solution to the problem.

The best bang for your buck on an iPad right now is the new Apple 9.7 inch
model. The mini four is, in my opinion, too old. If they had come out with a
new one with the same processor as the new iPad 9.7, then I would think that
would be a good choice. But they didn’t. You have to figure on upgradability,
and how much longer is that mini four going to be upgradable. Wouldn’t touch it
with a 10 foot pole. You can get the 9.7 inch model with 32 GB for $300 right
now at Best Buy. If you have a little more money, an extra hundred gets you 128
GB. I’m sure the pro models have better audio, and of course better displays.
But as a blind person, who cares? I mean about the display. And I can’t imagine
that whatever improvement there is with the audio is worth all that extra
money. But that is in the ear of the beholder. Like you, I have an iPad Mini
too. And I keep hoping that they’re going to upgrade that model with a better
processor. But it hasn’t happened, and signs point to it not happening. So, if
you want to stick with an iPad, that 9.7 form factor is the smallest thing
you’re going to get. Your other option I suppose would be to hang onto your
current phone, whatever model it is, get a new phone and turn your old phone
into a replacement for your iPad mini two.

Apple is coming out with some very affordable iPads these days. The last Mini I
believe was the Mini 4 which was released in October 2015. It is quite a bit
slower than the one most recently released which has received a pretty good

Re: purchasing IPad vs. mini IPad

2018-05-16 Thread Mary Otten

Hello Marie,

If I understand your question correctly you are referring to external
battery packs that you can use to charge your phone. You would use one or
these exactly as you would use any other charger so whether your phone is in
a case does not matter.

Personally I use Anker battery packs. These are available from Amazon and
come in a variety of capacities and sizes.

The rule of thumb I use when choosing a battery pack is that you take the
MAH value of your phone’s battery multiply this by 1.5 and this should
charge your device once. So my iPhone has a battery of 2000 MAH for example
so a 3000 MAH will give me around a single charge.

Hope this helps.

purchasing IPad vs. mini IPad

I currently have a mini IPad II, and before I buy a later model, I am looking

If an IPad is recommended, which ones work best with VO?

How do I get the speaker to turn off on my iPhone SE, when it comes on in a
conversation. It has happened twice, and putting the phone to my ear does not
solve the problem. Actually, I did not realize I moved it that far from my ear
to cause it to go on speaker. I realize that the device is sensitive, so it
could be that some unnoticeable movement could have triggered it, but, oh my
goodness, what to do to stop it, please? Thanks.

This has happened to me a few times before, usually when I am in the

Then, they will add it to the list. If enough people email them about

What to do when speaker comes and I have the phone against my ear.

2018-05-16 Thread Carolyn Arnold
How do I get the speaker to turn off on my iPhone SE, when
it comes on in a conversation. It has happened twice, and
putting the phone to my ear does not solve the problem.
Actually, I did not realize I moved it that far from my ear
to cause it to go on speaker. I realize that the device is
sensitive, so it could be that some unnoticeable movement
could have triggered it, but, oh my goodness, what to do to
stop it, please? Thanks.

RE: The best color identifyer that would work on an Iphone 5s

2018-05-16 Thread Carolyn Arnold
I use Colorinos - yes, s, plural. I have two, very dependent on them. The one
from APHsounds really tempting, especially since people are saying that a
standalone is more accurate than an app. You do not have to have a light on for
the Colorino; it has its own light.

The reason that I have two is that I dropped one, and it didn't work right.
Eventually, my husband got out his soldering iron and repaired it, so I do have
two that are working. I keep one in the bathroom near my clothes closets and
one in a drawer near the washer and dryer. I'd like to have an accurate one
that I could take shopping with me whenever I go, which is not often, but if
I'm there, I want to know what color, and design would be a real help.

Best regards,

Carolyn

Who uses a color identifier frequently? If so, is it part of a function that

I like TapTapSee because it will also identify a pattern.

work well for people with no sight and who want to play from a distance with

I look forward to your responses - and thanks in advance!

        Hi all,

I think I recall that Jonathan Mosen used to play Scrabble from a

input on this for me, Jonathan; but I'm hoping others have. Which of the
Scrabble options (if any) work well for people with no sight and who
want to play from a distance with their opponent?

I look forward to your responses - and thanks in advance!

That one that costs over 700 dollars was incredible, it's true. Very
accurate and like others have said, stand-alone devices tend to have
more accuracy than the IPhone with an app. I just wish they were more
affordable, given that they only do one thing.

Reading by Line

2018-05-16 Thread kelby carlson
I have something of a strange problem. When I set the rotor to lines and swipe
down by line, VO seems to cut off the first letter or two from the beginning of
the next line it reads. I don’t know why this happens but it’s been going on
for awhile now and doing things like turning VO on and off haven’t helped. Any
ideas how to solve this?

Taptapsee is as good as any. Color Inspector does well, but they all need good,
consistent lighting and should not be entirely trusted as much as a stand alone

I like TapTapSee because it will also identify a pattern.

Re: Home Pod and test messages

2018-05-16 Thread Robert Carter
Hi,

Anyone in the house can activate the HomePod with their voice. The owner of the
HomePod has to have his or her iPhone on the WiFi network before the HomePod
will speak text messages. So, anyone in the house can only activate the text
messages if the owner of the HomePod is present. Not a perfect solution but
that is how it works at the moment.

Re: New color identifier, article from blind bargains

2018-05-16 Thread Shermeen Khan
That one that costs over 700 dollars was incredible, it's true. Very
accurate and like others have said, stand-alone devices tend to have
more accuracy than the IPhone with an app. I just wish they were more
affordable, given that they only do one thing.

cellular. Works fine here at home on wifi. After looking at my settings
below, do you have any ideas for solving my problem? Thanks for any help.
Btw, am using 11.3.1 with apple SE.My settings in cellular are:

cellular data on;

cellular data options roaming is on.

personal hotspot is off.

Under the privacy settings, location services is on

That’s all I can think of to check.

  Subject: troubleshooting help please

Yesterday, I discovered that my iphone does not connect to the internet via
cellular. Works fine here at home on wifi. After looking at my settings
below, do you have any ideas for solving my problem? Thanks for any help.
Btw, am using 11.3.1 with apple SE.My settings in cellular are:
  cellular data on;
cellular data options roaming is on.
  personal hotspot is off.
Under the privacy settings, location services is on
That’s all I can think of to check.

how to get the newsline app on the ipad

2018-05-16 Thread Arlene
We've tried to search several times now on the ipad for the newsline ap, and
have done it in different ways in order to find it, but no results for the
newsline. We tried searching in the app store as
nfb-newsline mobile app
nfb news line
If anyone knows how to search for newsline on the ipad please let me know.
Thank you By the way we never had trouble finding the newsline app on the
phone. Thanks again.

Arlene
