Re: which is the best mac to buy

2018-12-16 Thread 'RobH.' via VIPhone
Last time we did this, we had the basic mac Mini and bought seperate monitor
with speakers, so you choose your own. Apple-specific
monitor, like all their things, are a lot dearer than buying quality generic.
YOu can hook monitors and usb keyboards to the laptops
too, so could have one of those so you can use it as desk or lap use.

Mrs has iMacs downstairs and plugs it all into the monitor based system.

If I wish to change from windows to mac and I wish to use the speakers you get
in the mac monitors, which would be the best one to
buy? hope someone can help, Janet

RE: [EXTERNAL] Re: Resetting a 6 S

2018-12-16 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Keith,

I might not be Anna, but I can answer your question. No, you don't have to turn
off iOS Keychain, but what Anna meant to say is that if you first turn it off,
then do reset network settings and then turn it back on that it should then
remember your WiFi password so that when you connect to your WiFi again you
don't have to enter it. I am not sure if your iPhone's name is also reset to
what it was before. I did think about this some more and decided that for me
having to enter my WiFi password is not really a big deal, after all, by the
time I go into the Settings under my Apple Id, iCloud and Keychain and turn it
off and then repeat I can easily enter my WiFi password or, in my case, I just
ask my wife to hold her phone close and she then gets the request to share it
with me.

Hi Anna,

Can I please just confirm? I understand your comment below to mean that if I do
a Reset of Network Settings, that I must first turn off iOS Keychain. Is that
right? I think I have done a reset of network settings without doing this, and
all seemed good with iOS keychain. But, I just can’t remember for sure that I
have done this reset since activating keychain.

Thanks for any clarification.

Yes, you can. You don't have options like Shuffle, and rewinding and fast

Shortcuts for iOS

2018-12-16 Thread Emilio S. Hernandez
Hello everyone,

For those who have an interest in Shortcuts for iOS what are some
"Shortcut-workflows" that you have found beneficial?
I am aware that the gallery has some useful shortcut-workflows to help one get
started, but I am curious to learn of custom shortcuts others have put together.
For example, I am learning about the x-callback-URL interface, which allows
Shortcuts to interact with other third-party iOS applications. While elementary
in my knowledge and use thereof, I have managed to create a shortcut-workflow
that pulls the web site title and link of the current web page I am viewing,
and place this text into a new Drafts5 note, with text that I've written.
Very interested to learn of other shortcut-workflows from others on this list.

Cheers.

Hello again everyone,

I understand how to do this with the Mail App, and this isn’t what I need. I
use the Outlook App for my main email account, and there are addresses I no
longer need. So I would like to remove them, if at all possible.

Thank you,

I think I’ve got it, though it’s a bit tricky with visual voice mail, which I
have. I had to select the speaker button and then hit play voice mail again.

I had to set up a voice mail of myself calling from my land line so I’d have
something immediate to play with.

How do you switch between Simple & Visual voice mail? Thanks much.
Take care. Go Rams!

Same as a phone call. If I put the phone to my ear or cover the top of the
phone with my hand and then take it away it automatically switches to
speakerphone. I can also find the "Speaker" button and tap it if that
doesn't work, if the keyboard comes up you may have to hide it just as on a
phone call.

I should say that I have simple voice mail, not visual voice mail. I am
quite sure, however, that with visual voice mail there is a button to switch
it to speakerphone as well if you can't get it to auto-switch, but try to
cover the top of the phone where the earpiece is with your hand for a second
or two and then take it away to see if that switches it.

RE: Resetting a 6 S

2018-12-16 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
And, if the reboot or hard reset also don't help try Reset Network Settings in
Settings > General > Reset.
Remember that if you do this you have to reconnect to your WiFi including
entering your WiFi password and if you had named your iPhone something like
"Dulce's iPhone" you have to go to Settings > General > About and double tap on
the name field which after a Reset Network Settings will just have "iPhone" in
it, you can then edit it and call it whatever you want.

RE: Straight to voicemail

2018-12-16 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
If the calls were forwarded then they wouldn't land in her own voice mail just
as the call would be answered if auto answer had been turned on as somebody
else suggested.
I am still curious to hear if she tried to turn off the phone, remove the SIM
tray (just have to push the release button with a paper clip or the removal
tool and pull it out half way) then push it back in and turn the phone back on.

This may be a very remote possibility, but is there any chance you forwarded
the calls to this phone to another number? Just in case, try using the keypad
and press *73 then press the call button. If this is the problem you should
hear several beeps and then it will disconnect. It is worth a try.

Richard,

I’m still perplexed. I’ve turned on vibrate with ring, but nothing happens –
still goesstraight to voicemail. When I dial the number, there isn’t even a
pause, it’s just straight into voicemail. I don’t know what else to try.

Do not disturb is off. Next flick gives me “Scheduled” and double tap to
toggle setting. I don’t know what this means or does.

I’d turn on vibrate on ring also for testing at least.

Have you checked that the mute switch on the left side didn’t get pushed down?

Are you hearing other sounds like text message alerts or Email alerts?

Possibly checking the sound volume in Settings, Sounds.

Re: Straight to voicemail

2018-12-16 Thread Marie

Re: Removing downloaded music from my phone

2018-12-16 Thread Anna Dresner
Hi Terry,

To remove a particular album, double-tap its name. You should find a Remove
button on the album screen. Double-tap it and choose the option to remove
downloads. You can do the same thing with a playlist. You can also delete all
or some music by going to Settings and choosing Storage, then Music.

The iTunes and App Store section of Settings lets you control which content, if
any, is downloaded to your phone automatically.

To get music from your library onto your phone, you can connect to iTunes and
sync particular albums, artists, and playlists. If you use iTunes Match or
Apple Music, you can download content from your library without using iTunes.
You can also put music into Dropbox and use the Dropbox app on your phone to
play it.

I hope that helps.

Best,
Anna

RE: Size differences in latest iPhones

2018-12-16 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
The iPhone XS has a 5.8 inch OLED screen and the iPhone XR has a 6.1 inch LCD
screen.

iPhone XS: 5.8 inch OLED Screen
Dimensions (imperial): 5.65 by 2.79 by 0.3 inches
Dimensions (metric): 143.6 by 70.9 by 7.7 mm
Weight (imperial): 6.24 ounces
Weight (metric): 177 grams
Comes in Gold, Space Grey and Silver

iPhone XR: 6.1 inch LCD Screen
Dimensions (imperial): 5.94 By 2.98 by 0.33 inches
Dimensions (metric): 150.9 by 75.7 by 8.3 mm
Weight (imperial): 6.84 ounces
Weight (metric): 194 grams
Comes in RED, Yellow, White, Coral, Black and Blue

Size difference:
The iPhone XR is 0.29 inches longer, 0.19 inches wider and 0.03 inches thicker
than the iPhone XS
The iPhone XR weighs 0.6 ounces more than the iPhone XS
In metric the difference is 7.3mm longer, 4.8mm wider and 0.6mm thicker, it
weighs 17 grams more.

How to visualize that:
0.29 inches longer means the iPhone XR is longer than the iPhone XS by the
thickness of your iPhone 6S which in fact is 0.28 inches thick, but you would
never be able to tell the difference between 0.29 and 0.28.
In width the difference is even less, only 0.19 inches which is just under 5mm
or about as much as maybe 3 or 4 average business cards stacked on top of each
other.
I won't even make a big deal of the thickness, at 0.03 inches it is so little
difference, only just over half a millimeter, that's probably the thickness of
a sheet of paper.
As for weight 0.6 ounces or 17 grams is also not very much, it's about a table
spoon and a half of sugar.

And how is the battery life, compared to say, the 6S, or even the 8?

RE: Size differences in latest iPhones

2018-12-16 Thread Richard Turner
Allow me to expand on my previous message. In fact, it looks like the XR has
better battery life. Here is the article that points this out:

  *   iPhone XR/
  *   iPhone/
  * iPhone XR Has the Best Battery Life of Any iPhone,
Ever

iPhone XR Has the Best Battery Life of Any iPhone, Ever
By Mike Peterson September 14,
2018
[Iphone Xr1]Credit: CNET
Text Size
- +

The newly announced, mid-range iPhone XR lineup may just have the
best-estimated battery life of any Apple handset ever.

Apple didn’t make a big deal out of it, either. During the Gather Round
keynote, Apple SVP Phill Schiller only said that the iPhone XR would get 1.5
more hours of battery life than the iPhone 8
Plus.

Compare that to the battery in the iPhone XS Max, which the company made a
point of calling the biggest battery ever put into an iPhone. (Though Apple
compared its battery life to the iPhone X, whose battery life falls slightly
short of the iPhone 8 Plus.)

Of course, a bigger battery doesn’t always translate to longer battery life —
the stated battery lives of the iPhone XS Max and the iPhone XR prove that
point.

According to Apple, the iPhone XS Max’s battery will last through up to 13
hours of internet use, 25 hours of talk time, 15 hours of video playback, or 65
hours of audio playback.

But the iPhone XR’s battery life specifications list up to 25 hours of talk
time, 15 hours of internet use, 16 hours of video playback, and 65 hours of
audio playback.

While those battery specs are roughly the same, the iPhone XR manages to edge
out its larger stablemate by an hour or so in internet usage and video playback
— despite, presumably, having a smaller battery.

In other words, this means the iPhone XR has the longest-lasting battery life
of any iPhone Apple has produced.

Why Does the iPhone XR Last Longer?

It’s hard to pin down exactly why the iPhone XR has the best battery life among
Apple’s lineup, but there’s likely one reason that’s a big contributor: the
display.

Generally, OLED displays are thought to be more efficient than LCD displays.
Which is curious because the iPhone XS Max has an OLED, while the iPhone XR has
a so-called “Liquid Retina” LCD-based display.

But, as PhoneArena points
out, the
difference likely comes down to pixel density.

The iPhone XR has a relatively low screen resolution for a modern flagship,
especially when compared to the iPhone XS Max. (For reference, the XR has
828×1792 pixels versus the XS Max’s 2,688×1,241 pixels.)

What that amounts to an objectively lower-resolution display, it likely plays a
big role in the iPhone XR’s pixel density.

In PhoneArena’s testing, higher pixel density typically means lower battery
life when capacities are averaged. Thus, the iPhone XR’s lower-resolution
display means the device has an advantage when it comes to battery life.

Apple’s Battery Improvements

Apple, of course, seems to be continually improving the battery technology
embedded in its devices. That may be especially true
post-Batterygate.

Batteries degrade and worsen over time. But as battery tech improves over the
years, the effects of that may lessen.

And while the future of smartphones that last weeks on a charge may be quite a
ways
off,
any battery life gains should be seen as a win for consumers.

 Hello Richard and list,

Thank you for this. That was helpful. So I appreciate it. I just have one more
question.

It mentioned the different batteries in the phones. If the number is higher,
say 2600 versus 2900. Does this mean that the 2900 size battery is larger, and
might last longer?
Those weren’t the exact numbers given. That just was an idea.

Thank you,

Terri

Yes, a larger capacity battery will last longer, but the $250 price difference
between the XR and XS unless you need the extra large screen would buy a couple
nice battery packs that would give far more battery life.

I couldn’t help but editorialize.

Hello all,

This is my last message for now.

I was wondering, what are the differences in the iPhone XR, and the XS?
Which 1 is the smallest?
And how is the battery life, compared to say, the 6S, or even the 8?

Thank you,

Terri

Hi Fanus

Once you’ve checked for updates, you need to close iTunes and make sure that
you are in the Apple Software Update program. That will have the iTunes update
checked. You then tab to the install update button. The update is well worth it
as the column browser and Jaws issue is fixed.

You can set it up as a new device. Then you can use iTunes to add music. Be
aware that you will not be able to add any apps because the iOSis too old. I

Hi Fazil,

I am not much of a coffee drinker and apart from a little Starbucks counter at
our local Safeway supermarket we don't have one here in my town, but I just
downloaded the app which says "Starbucks, Order, Pay, and Earn Stars" which
lists "Starbucks Coffee Company" as the developer.
When I opened the app I had the option to join their rewards program and when I
tapped that I was asked for my name, address, city, province, postal code etc.
It obviously knew I am in Canada since it was asking for "province" and "postal
code" not "State" and "Zip Code".
Not sure why you are not getting this, I couldn't really do much more, when I
tapped on the Order tab at the bottom I was given a bunch of options for their
over-priced drinks and at the bottom it said "No Store Nearby".

It asked me for the zip code but did not accept alphanumeric code.

Size differences in latest iPhones

2018-12-16 Thread Terri Stimmel
Hello all,

This is my last message for now.

I was wondering, what are the differences in the iPhone XR, and the XS?
Which 1 is the smallest?
And how is the battery life, compared to say, the 6S, or even the 8?

Thank you,

Terri

Removing addresses from the Outlook App

2018-12-16 Thread Terri Stimmel
Hello again everyone,

I was wondering, does anyone know how to remove old addresses from within the
Outlook App?
I understand how to do this with the Mail App, and this isn’t what I need. I
use the Outlook App for my main email account, and there are addresses I no
longer need. So I would like to remove them, if at all possible.

Thank you,

Terri

Removing downloaded music from my phone

2018-12-16 Thread Terri Stimmel
Hello everyone,

I was wondering, how do I go about removing downloaded music from my phone? I
can’t figure this out.
I don’t want to remove it from my library, just from the phone itself?

Also, how do I stop stuff from being automatically downloaded to my phone?
And can I add music from my library, to my phone, manually? If so, how do I do
this?

Thank you,

Terri

Re: Braille display commands with iPhone XS

2018-12-16 Thread Richard Turner

As far as I know, you have to manually unlock the phone before the braille
display can communicate with the phone.
If you have a passcode, once the phone is awake, you may be able to enter the
passcode.

RE: iTunes update

2018-12-16 Thread Robert Wright
It never showed up for me. All I was ever shown was iCloud.and this was when I
was running 12.6.3.

That is only true if you installed the Windows Store version which I strongly
discourage, the desktop version in my opinion still works much better and still
updates via Apple Update.

Well, that has changed. Apple software update only updates iCloud. To update
iTunes you must go to the Microsoft store. Even if you go to
www.itunes.com

it will send you to the Microsoft store if you are running windows.

Hi Fanus,

Close iTunes and launch Apple Update. That may not be the exact name, but it's
something like it. Use it to check for updates.

Best,
Anna

Hello Debbie
Thanks but that is my problem. I get to the page where iTunes is discussed but
I get no install or download link or button. There is a link to download from
the microsoft store but even there I do not find a link or button. I use
windows10 and the latest version of jaws.

Hi Fanus

Once you’ve checked for updates, you need to close iTunes and make sure that
you are in the Apple Software Update program. That will have the iTunes update
checked. You then tab to the install update button. The update is well worth it
as the column browser and Jaws issue is fixed.

Hello list
I have refrained from updating iTunes on my pc because I wanted to keep on
buying songs and albums. Now I get a message that I can not buy anymore without
updating iTunes. When I activate the upgrade option in the help menu I get to a
web page but I do not find any update or download button. What am I missing?

RE: Can I play mp3 files in an old iPhone?

2018-12-16 Thread Robert Wright
You can set it up as a new device. Then you can use iTunes to add music. Be
aware that you will not be able to add any apps because the iOSis too old. I
made this mistake. I’m already looking to find a 5s so I can get my Mr Dj app
back.

Subject: Can I play mp3 files in an old iPhone?

Hello,

Can I use an old 4S as a player? If so, how can I transfer mp3 files from the
windows pc to the iPhone? This phone doesn't have service now because I'm using
a 6S, but I would like to use the 4S as a player.
Thank you,
Rena

I agree, we do seem to have lost quite a high number that no longer work
with the later IOS versions. very annoying!
