2018-12-29 Thread Richard Turner

What display do you have now?
What do you mean about knowing which cell you are on in a line of braille?
What kind of computing capability?
Do you mean basic math or what?

Re: Voice Dream Reader and Dropbox

2018-12-29 Thread Richard Turner

To add a little, make sure the file names are sequential, like chapter1.mp3,
chapter2.mp3, etc.
Put all the files in a zip file with the name of the book as the name of the
zip file.
Then, when you download the zip file into VDR, you will have a book with each
file being a chapter in the correct order.
It doesn't matter what the names are, so long as a computer would put them in
order.

Hi,

I am attempting to learn how to download books from Dropbox to Voice Dream
Reader. The book is in multiple files with one chapter per file. The only way
I can figure out how to download it to VDR on my phone requires me to download
each file separately. When this is done, each file (chapter) is listed as a
separate book in my VDR library.

How do I get all the files into one book on VDR?

Thanks.

Re: swimming with apple watch

2018-12-29 Thread goshawk on horseback
personally, I would say leave it alone when doing the swim, as unless you
can get it to tell you the time by vibration mode, when swimming the speaker
doesn't work very well anyway.
I would also say that if you want a good swimming tracker, you may want to
think about investing in a marlin, from:
http://www.platysens.com/marlin/
as whilst I haven't had the time issue you mentioned, certainly in open
water, the distance registered on the apple watch, compared to the distance
I know I have done, is way off of the mark. so in future, I will probably
leave the swim tracking to the marlin, and just use the apple watch for an
alarm, to tell me when I need to come back to shore or what ever.

You have to have a certain level of heart rate for it to count. So if
you stopped to check the time, your heart rate likely dropped.
When I take long walks, I only get a certain amount of credit but when
I use my elliptical which is constant and hard work, I get the exact
time credit.

A Question about Syncronizing Text Messages between Apple Watch and iPhone

2018-12-29 Thread M. Taylor
Hello All,

Well, now that I have begun to send text messages on my Watch, I am
discovering that removing a thread from the phone, does not remove it from
the watch and, sadly, vice versa.

Now, as I do not want message syncing between Mac OS and iOS, I have the
iCloud message syncing feature disabled on my account.

So the question: Is there a way to have messages synchronized between only
the watch and the phone, to which it is paired?

Thank you,

Mark

Overcast issue.

2018-12-29 Thread Jenifer Barr
Hi all.
I'm trying to listen to a podcast in the order of episodes created.
When an episode ends it still randomly playing different eppisodes of
this podcast. I have the setting so that it is organized oldest to
newest but the autoplay doesn't follow this. What am I doing wrong?
Is there a way that I cannot find of turing the autoplay feature off
so that I can pick my next eppidode? So I can play them in their
correct order?
Thanks for any help.

Thanks.

Once you have your Alexa device connected with Apple Music, all you have to do
is tell her to play XYZ playlist or XYZ album or whatever from Apple Music. You
can go into the Alexa app on your iPhone and sent Apple Music as you are

Screen curtain and battery life on the new iPhones

2018-12-29 Thread Dionesque
Hello guys! I'm about to get myself a new iPhone, I'm still on my oldie iPhone
5 and now I'm considering between the Xs and the XR. I know the specs of both
phones and as a blind person I of course prefer a better battery life of the XR
against the better display type of the XS, But here's my question: does anyone
of you use the iPhone XS or XS Max and what do you can tell about battery usage
if you're using screen curtain? On the iPhone XR, same as on all the other
iPhones prior to the X version from last year, if the screen curtain is active,
the screen is not showing any content but it's still glowing dark grey as the
backlight behind the display stays on, only the colour on the screen turns to
black instead of the actual icons, pictures, websites etc. On the X series the
black colour on the display means that the pixels on those black spots are
actually turned of and hence not glowing at all and, logically to me, not
consuming the energy. Following this way of thinking, with the screen curtain
turned on on an X, XS or XS Max iPhone, the display should be totally dark and
hence the battery should last much longer in this mode than on any other older
iPhones. Does any of you have any experience with this, anyone can confirm the
longe/better battery performance and longer standby time on the X, XS and XS
Max with the screen curtain turned on? I understand that with normal use of the
display, the XR shows better battery performance thanks to the capacity of its
battery. But for blind people using the screen curtain the things are probably
other way like? This would interest me a lot and help me immensely in taking my
decision which phone to buy! Kind regards and all the best for the upcoming
year 2019! Barbara

Is that in the paid version?

I just deleted the free version I had at Richard’s recommendation as I hadn’t

I will say that the one thing Digit-Eyes does that Seeing AI and other similar
apps don't is allow you to save products you've scanned and liked in a
favorites list. I find this very convenient for reviewing past purchases I've
liked.

Good afternoon.

I was wondering if I could get rid of the Digit-Eyes app from my iPhone. I got
the free version that I never learned how to use, never upgrading to the paid
version. I have learned how to use the product channel on Seeing AI a little.
I wonder if that and the other facilities there and in other apps such as Tap
Tap See would be sufficient.

Hello everyone,

This Monday, I will be getting an iPhone XR. I am both excited and a bit
nervous. I know I will have a lot to learn, and likely many questions.

I honestly did not want to upgrade my phone yet. I am very happy with my 6S.

However, I now need a phone with NFC. This way I will be able to use my
Freestyle Libre.

So once I get my phone, what are some things I might need to know?

Are there any certain settings I need to be aware of?

Also if I have purchased some alert tones, and ringtones, how do I make sure
these get transferred to my new phone?

If I back up everything to the cloud, will these be included?

Any help is much appreciated.

Thank you,

Terri

Re: Smart braille watch

2018-12-29 Thread Deb Cook Lewis
Yes, it is definitely not for reading. But even the time was
problematic because the dots retracted when touched, or I should say
some would. And htis was the experience of others as well so it wasn't
that mine was defective. My husband really wanted one and was willing
to put up with a lot for it, but even he ultimately gave the notion up
for the time being. I agree that I didn't want one either but there
has been definite interest so I hope they get it right.

RE: Apple Music library and Alexa

Hi Mary. I did get apple music set up and active on our echo devices but I have
a question. I did a little researching and it seems music in play lists will
play and apple music albums themselves but I’m not sure what music in your
libratry will play. I’ve tried playing albums I ripped into the itunes library
and can’t get it to play.

Hi Anthony,
Once you have your Alexa device connected with Apple Music, all you have to do
is tell her to play XYZ playlist or XYZ album or whatever from Apple Music. You
can go into the Alexa app on your iPhone and sent Apple Music as you are
favored provider. Again, I don’t remember how I did it. I read an article and
follow their instructions. It wasn’t hard. If you go into that app and get in
there I think you will figure it out. I’m sorry I just don’t have the memory
are used to have. It’s very annoying.

in advance for any help you can give.

You have to have a certain level of heart rate for it to count. So if
you stopped to check the time, your heart rate likely dropped.
When I take long walks, I only get a certain amount of credit but when
I use my elliptical which is constant and hard work, I get the exact
time credit.

Auto Fill Passwords & Websites

2018-12-29 Thread Mike B.
Hi All,

Running an S E iPhone with iOS 12.1.2. I want to have the phone auto fill
my password on a specific website so, I opened Password & Accounts, Website
& App passwords, entered the URL, user name and password, and turned on Auto
Fill passwords. Now when I open the ADT Pulse app the only field that is
filled is the, User Name. How do I get the phone to auto fill the password?
Also, when entering the URL into the Websites & App Passwords field, are you
supposed to put, HTTPS//:, at the beginning of the URL or leave it out? All
help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks much.
Take care. Go Rams!
Sent from my iBarstool.
I type out everything I want to remember. That way instead of spending a lot
of time trying to remember what it was, I spend the time looking for where I
saved it!

Did my first swim with my apple watch 4 but after spending about an hour in the
pool it only shows 10 minutes swimming. I did frequently press the buttons to
try and find out what the time was. Should I not press anything on the watch
once I have started a workout?

such an animal does indeed exist. I found an app in the App Store on my Apple

a place where I can find out more information as to the cost, and where I might

Re: Smart braille watch

2018-12-29 Thread Deb Cook Lewis
We had a pre release version of the Dot watch in our office. It was a
total disaster device so before you invest, we need to find someone
who can verify whether all of the problems were fixed. A number of
other testers reported the same things I did as follows:
The cells were a non-standard size making the Braille rather hard to
read. The spacing of dots was not normal at all.
Dots retracted when touched so what you saw was not always accurate.
The device had a terrible time staying paired to the phone.
It was such a great idea, but the implementation, which they claimed
was the final version was truly not ready for prime time.
We all sent them lots of detailed feedback but I'vew never had
verification that any changes were made. So I would be super caucious
about this until someone does verify that things are much better.

Re: Digit-Eyes

2018-12-29 Thread Alan Lemly

I will say that the one thing Digit-Eyes does that Seeing AI and other similar
apps don't is allow you to save products you've scanned and liked in a
favorites list. I find this very convenient for reviewing past purchases I've
liked.

RE: Digit-Eyes

2018-12-29 Thread Richard Turner
The only thing Seeing AI and Digit-Eyes have in common is the bar code
identification.
I’m not even sure what the Digit-eyes free version does as I have always had
the paid vrsion.
But, if you are not using Digit-Eyes, delete it.

I was wondering if I could get rid of the Digit-Eyes app from my iPhone. I got
the free version that I never learned how to use, never upgrading to the paid

I wonder if that and the other facilities there and in other apps such as Tap

How to add apple music to amazon alexa

2018-12-29 Thread Larry Smith
Here are the steps to add apple music to amazon alexa. 1. open amazon alexa.
2. double tap menu.
3. swipe town to settings and double tap.
4. swipe down to music and double tap.
5. double tap on link new service. You should see a list of available music
services including apple music. You will need to link your apple music account
using your apple ID and password.
Hope this helps.

Yes, I am not surprised that the Google assistant tops the list. However, I
don’t like their business model one little bit. I don’t want to be sold by

Hey! Richard:

Thank you for getting back to me about the smart boy watch. I haven’t heard of
it, but I did find the dot watch app in my Apple App Store on my iPhone. I will
check things out this afternoon, and get back to the list with whatever
information that I can find. Maybe the information will help others who are
either considering or wondering about this product.

Happy New Year!

FYI, the normal price is $369. It is on sale for about $300 through December
31.
Below is the link to the US store, and another link to the Blind Bargains show

This is the first time I’ve heard of a smart braille watch for the iPhone if
such an animal does indeed exist. I found an app in the App Store on my Apple
Watch called dot watch, is that the watch they are talking about, and is there
a place where I can find out more information as to the cost, and where I might
purchase one and the price.

Thanks in advance, and happy new year.

Re: Apple Music library and Alexa

2018-12-29 Thread Kimberly
Anthony,

Once you set apple music as your default music source -- which I believe you
do from within the Alexa app -- anything you ask Alexa to play, she will get
from apple music including any playlists you have set up yourself.

I hope this helps.
