others connecting to your sonos speakers?

2019-01-07 Thread Anouk Radix
Hi everyone another small sonos question. I did read on their community
forums that some ppl have problems with other people connecting their
spotify to the persons sonos speakers when this is not wanted. I am
presuming that this can only be done if you are both on the seem wifi
network?

I dont really fancy suddenly hearing strange music coming through my
speakers but my wifi network is well protected soI am assuming this wont
be a problem.

Thanks in advance for any info,

sonos now has possibility to limit volume

2019-01-07 Thread Anouk Radix
Hi, Sorry if everyone knows this already but just out of curiosity i
scrolled through the last few release notes for sonos software and see
that you can now limit the max volume for groups of sonos speakers from
within the app. I thought that this would be very useful for if you
accidentally touch the touch pads or have your phone set to max.

Just a heads up.

Instant Pot makes Google Assistant your new sous chef

2019-01-07 Thread Cristóbal Muñoz

Perhaps something of interest for owners of the wifi model or those who may be
considering one. The ideal thing would be for the Instant Pot folks to simply
address the accessibility issues in the app, but anyway.

Instant Pot makes Google Assistant your new sous chef

It was only a matter of time, really. Instant Brands has announced

  that its Instant Pot

Smart WiFi pressure cooker now supports Google Assistant, making it possible
to start cooking or check on the status without pulling out your phone or
peeking at the tiny display. It's the height of culinary luxury, but it could
be incredibly helpful if you'd rather not drop what you're doing to start your
rice or check on your brisket.

https://www.engadget.com/2019/01/07/instant-pot-google-assistant-support/

The cooker officially sells for $150 with a 6-quart capacity. You probably
won't go out of your way to get an Instant Pot for Google Assistant support,
but it could make the ultra-trendy device feel more at home with the rest of
your connected kitchen devices

RE: My fight with the Ring Pro and thoughts on the Nest Hello Video Doorbell and the Google Home smartspeakers

2019-01-07 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Robin, Rick and

First of all, I haven't seen a section like in the Ring app where you got a
choice of a bunch of sounds, the Nest Hello does a basic notification and as
far as I am concerned that's OK.
As for answering a ring I had a chance to try it when a delivery guy rang the
doorbell this morning and it worked well.
I tapped on the notification, put my finger on the home button to unlock with
Touch Id and waited until the Nest app opened. This probably took 5 seconds in
total. Then I went to the very bottom, you can do a 4-finger tap, swiped left a
couple of times to the "Talk" button and double tapped it and it connected in
another second or two and I was able to talk to the guy. I would say all in all
it took me 8 or 10 seconds and while the Nest app could be a bit better with
respect to accessibility, it definitely seems easier and faster to answer a
ring.
So far the Nest Hello has also not had any connection issues whatsoever.

Sieghard

Hey Sieghard,
Can you tell us more about the different sounders the Nest Hello video doorbell
offers for things like motion detection or actual ringing of bell? I’ll hit up
youtube to see if anyone has offered them but they’d be fun to hear for
comparison’s sake especially for those of us who have had ring doorbells as
well.
I too like you have had connectivity issues from day one with my Ring
doorbell2’s and I too often have difficulty actually asking who is there via
the app even with notifications set to persist until I interact with them.
Such things intrigue me so thanks for indulging me.

Subject: My fight with the Ring Pro and thoughts on the Nest Hello Video
Doorbell and the Google Home smartspeakers

Hi,

I have had a Ring Pro Video Doorbell at the backdoor of my retail store for
many years. For all those years we had nothing but problems with it primarily
with reliability and the doorbell dropping off the WiFi. I should mention that
I also have one of the older Ring video doorbells at home, not sure if it is
the original one or the second generation, but it's the one with a battery
which despite the fact that it is hardwired we still have to charge from time
to time when it is quite cold outside for a few days. It stays connected OK,
but it's useless for answering an actual ring because when we do that it sits
there for about 30 seconds and all the app says is "Activating device", by the
time it actually connects and you can talk to somebody whoever was there is
usually long gone.
At my business I have tried all sorts of things since the building is of course
a bit larger although it is also not that big compared to some houses, it is 80
feet long and 25 wide which means 2,000 square feet and it has two floors for a
total of 4,000 square feet of floor area. My router used to be upstairs pretty
much exactly in the middle of the long side, but all the way to one side. This
means it was about 40 feet from the back of the store, but on the opposite side
of the back door and a floor up, actual distance would be about 50 feet and
another issue was that the back of the store has metal siding on the outside
and the door is a fairly heavy-duty steel door so definitely a problem for
WiFi. We tried a WiFi extender which I put in my office which is also at the
back of the store and it was basically only about 10 feet up and over just on
the inside of the backwall and still no luck. We then bought a Ring Chime Pro
which according to Ring also acts as a WiFi extender for the video doorbell and
we connected it to the WiFi and put it basically just on the inside above the
door where the doorbell is, maybe 5 feet away and still it would sometimes work
and other times not.
Next I decided to make my WiFi more robust by investing in a new router and I
bought a Netgear Orbi Pro mesh router. This system consists of the main router
and a satellite and you can add more satellites to it if you wish, but I
installed it in the backroom downstairs very close to where our fiber
connection comes in from the outside and our ISP has installed their modem.
This is only 3 feet from the back wall and maybe a third in looking at the 25
foot width of the building, distance to the doorbell is maybe 10 feet, but it's
downstairs and while it's mounted about 7 feet up this is only 3 feet higher
than the doorbell. The satellite is again upstairs and pretty much exactly in
the centre of the store both lengthways and with respect to the width as well.
On my iPhone I now get 3 out of 3 bars for WiFi anywhere in the store as well
as when I am standing outside by the backdoor next to the doorbell

The setting is under Settings, General, Accessibility. There is a Media section
a ways down the list and you what to turn Audio Description on. It defaults to
off.
You may need to also do something within the app for your network.

Re: Contacting a developer, regarding an App

2019-01-07 Thread Anna Dresner
Hi Terri,

I would start by saying how much you like the app and why. Then explain that
you are using the app with VoiceOver and have noticed some problems. Be as
specific as you can about what you are trying to do and the problems you run
into. Tell them that Applevis has a section for developers, and provide a link.
You might also send them a link to accessibility information on Apple's site.
Offer to beta-test the app as they try to improve its accessibility if you
would be willing to beta-test.

Best,
Anna

Subject: Restoring a backup to a new phone

Hi all,

When restoring a  backup of an old phone to a  new model is it necessary for
the new phone to have the same name as the original phone? I changed the name
on the new phone slightly to make identification easier but there seem to be
some odd quirks, not major, but I am wondering if perhaps I should have kept
the name the same?

For example a  purchased song on the old phone was accidently deleted.
When I search for it on Itunes it shows up as purchased but pressing the
download button doesn't do anything (using the same Apple id of course).

Any comments welcome.

RE: How to switch BeatsX or AirPods back to phone from watch?

2019-01-07 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Exactly, the Airpods came out what a year and a half ago in September of 2017
or was it even 2016? I guess we'll see if the expected Airpods update comes out
this year whether this will be addressed, but this along with the lack of
volume control on the Airpods makes me hold off. They are super-expensive and
while they are small, have good battery life given their size and sound great
they are lacking important features and no excuse about "work in progress" cuts
it for me.

Please no way I would give apple a pass with this. Your are completely right

RE: Apple Watch Series 4: Can I get it to express time in VIBra;ns8

2019-01-07 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
No, this is a Voiceover feature since with Voiceover off I assume Apple thinks
the user is sighted and they can of course just glance at the watch and see the

question on Described Audio with network apps

2019-01-07 Thread Vicki W.
I am wondering if it is possible to activate described audio on the programs
that have it when using network apps such as ABC, CBS or NBC when using them on
my SE phone or mini Ipad.

I have no problem accessing the programs, but I don't know how to turn audio
description on and off if it can even be done.

Thank you.

RE: Accessible recipes App

2019-01-07 Thread Richard Turner
I just found one called Copy Me That. It is free and behaves likes Paprika 3,
at least from the description since I have not purchased Paprika.
I was able to add a recipe from the once Upon A Chef web site, which is one I
like very much. www.onceuponachef.com

There is some accessibility issues with Copy Me That, but I’ve been able to
work around it in the first couple days of using it, so I have not gotten into
the details of what exactly needs improvement.

It is worth checking out,.

I don’t have the link handy, sorry.

Hello. I've been looking into the current state of accessible cooking apps for
an upcoming segment on Kelly and Company. Sadly, it appears that Yes Chef is no
more. It has disappeared from the Canadian app store at any rate. The latest
information I cold find from Conversant Labs was in 2017. It said nothing about
them closing down but the app's gone and there's nothing more current.

There's still digging around to be done but the Betty Crocker one still seems
useable as was suggested earlier. Also, another favourite on Applevis seems to
be the Paprika3 Recipe manager. It lets you find recipes on the web and
download them right from the page you find them on. It puts ingredients and
directions in separate sections and can convert measurements. It seems like a
very powerful cooking aid from what I've read. The Joy of Cooking is available
as an app as well for around $10. It seems pretty accessible at first glance.

Another thing you may want to try is to buy a cookbook in the Apple Books or
Kindle apps. I bought How to Cook Everything and it seems quite possible to
navigate to recipes. They've clearly improved the Books app since iOS12 came
out. It's not skipping text anymore thank goodness. I also got Salt Fat Acid
Heat for Kindle but have yet to experiment with how practical the Kindle app is
versus Books.

Another thing to perhaps try is watching the Salt Fat Acid Heat documentary on
Netflix. It's fully described and all of the non-english discussion is
translated into English as part of the audio description. There are doubtless
other food-related shows out there which have been similarly described.

Hope that helps you out. Don't forget that the SEEing AI app and other apps
might help identify things in the kitchen and/or follow instructions.

One note though, it shows the chapters and recipes as headings, but if you
double tap on them, it then opens up like it was a button or a link.

There is about 15,000 recipes.

It is free.

If you are on a call you probably will not be able to hear your voicemail. As
far as everything else once you hit the home button or activated the home

is being read by voiceover.

Yes I do check information on my iPhone while I am talking to someone. I always
have my headset in and go to the information that I am after e.g. my diary or
something that someone sent me by using the usual gestures. You can hear VO
talking in your ear as well as the person you are talking to and I usually
explain to the person who I am talking to what I am doing and could they stop

I'm with you, Seigard. Once you get the hang of the touch screen and realize
that it is a touch screen, not a bang screen, it does pretty much what it says
it will do. For me, most of it has been just learning what I really needed to
do. For instance, I get annoyed by notifications, tried to cut them back. I was
using the phone today, and it started about a voice mail that I was well aware
of, and I heard it say something about tap or double tap, can't remember, but I
did, and it shut the thing up, so that I could be in control and tend to the
voice mail on my terms when I wanted to.

The other day, my daughter-in-law wanted me to hear a message that she
forwarded me. I said I did not know how to do that while in conversation with
someone, so she asked me to hang up, check it, then call her with my opinion,
which I did. I am sure there is a way to do that. Do any of you ever do that,
while talking check other things on the phone, and how, please?

Best regards,

Carolyn

I think I heard about this before and maybe this is a newer version, but for
the most part I am amazed at how much trouble people go to and how much money
they spend to take away the strength of the iPhone or, for that matter, other
advanced smartphones. I understand that there might be a few cases where a
person for whatever reason can't touch the phone, e.g. if they are
quadriplegic, have no hands etc. Apple and now Google have put a lot of very
smart people to work to come up with this incredible way to make touchscreen
devices extremely accessible, apps like Flicktype make typing very efficient
with a bit of practice yet some people still think they are better off trying
to avoid touching that screen as much as possible. Maybe I miss something here,
but I just don't get it.

The site you go to change your Apple ID password is:

  Sent from my iPhone

and I know it's been given here before, So if someone could sent the link to go
into my apple id to change my password, that would behelpful. Also if anyone
has had experience with unlocking a straight talk phone. On december 19th, I
called to request the unlocking, and the customer service person said that she
would be sending an email with instructions as we understood. I never received
an email, so we're on the phone with straight talk and I'm still waiting to get
to the unlock department. Instead I was talking with the regular customer
service. I'm trying to confirm fron the phone itself that it's unlocked and the
regular customer service said it was, but I was just trying to confirm that. I
finally got to the unlock department and the guy was saying something about
putting the straight talk sim card from my phone into my phone to varify that
it was unlocked but some how that wasn't making any sense so if anyone has had
experience with unlocking a straighttalk phone that would really help right
now. Thank you.

Restoring a backup to a new phone

2019-01-07 Thread 'Gary Robinson' via VIPhone

Hi all,

When restoring a  backup of an old phone to a  new model is it necessary
for the new phone to have the same name as the original phone? I changed
the name on the new phone slightly to make identification easier but
there seem to be some odd quirks, not major, but I am wondering if
perhaps I should have kept the name the same?

For example a  purchased song on the old phone was accidently deleted.
When I search for it on Itunes it shows up as purchased but pressing the
download button doesn't do anything (using the same Apple id of course).

Any comments welcome.

Gary
