Re: Voice OCR App: Preliminary Impressions

2019-06-14 Thread Richard Turner
I was asked to allow access to the microphone and speech recognition when I
first ran the app.
I've not had time to try the voice control feature; but I just checked and if
you go to the main Phone settings, and go down to the Voice App, you will find
that it lists what Voice is allowed to access, which is both microphone and
speech recognition, along with the camera of course.
The developer, Shalin Shah I'm sure would love it if you would post your
findings as part of a review in the app store.
In the next update, he will be changing the app's name to say Voice OCR, so it
is easier to find in the app store.
Also he will fix a bug I found that if you are using a bluetooth earpiece, it
switches to speaker.
That will be fixed very soon.
I'll be testing it more tomorrow.
Later,
Richard

I hope you don’t mind.
The first thing I noticed was that Voice OCR wouldn’t respond to my voice
commands and I could find no way to enable the mic, either in the Voice app’s
settings or in the Settings applet. Any tips?
I had a couple of pieces of snailmail to go through, just scanning the
envelopes to see what I had. Voice’s edge detection was almost instantaneous,
and the Capture button was easy to find, along with other screen elements. I
took pictures of each envelope free-hand, tapped the Done button and the
images were processed fairly quickly and accurately.
Next I tried scanning pages from a magazine that I had lying around. Pages
contain ads and coupons, so I expected print quality to be somewhat problematic
for scanning, but I have to say that Voice did a very good job with each page,
even when scanned upside down and with a deliberate 45-degree skew. There were
some scanning errors, but there was very little gibberish.
The Export feature is very nice. I was able to export scanned pages to a PDF
document and copy the pdf file to Voice Dream Reader using the Share Sheet. The
pdf was clean and easily read by Voice Dream Reader. Likewise, I was able to
export as text, then, using the Share sheet, copy that text to an e-mail
message which I almost sent to this list.
Automatic mode could be really handy, especially while using my Fopydo scanning
stand, but I’d like to be able to increase the time between scans; I found
myself barely getting pages lined up just right before the next shutter click.
Results with the Fopydo and automatic scanning were quite good as well, but the
app bogged down a couple of times, so I’ll try it again after rebooting the
phone.

I’ll have more to say about this app as time goes on, but for now I’d say that
Voice OCR is pretty good and well worth spending some time with.

Actually, I have done what you did from time to time, and if I had to, I would

I find it much more efficient to process them on the PC.
I do have a Gmail address that I do not normally give out, and I have my phone
set to get Email from that address when the need arises.

That's exactly what I did as well and it reads like a charm. After you
enable microphone and voice etc. you can either dt to take picture and read or
use your voice to say "take picture" "read" etc. It works really well and gives
the percentages on when it is scanning the pictures. I know that Voice Dream
Scanner you can set to automatic so that it will take the picture and read
automatically but this app does really well. And for free we get updates.

Hey Richard,

I'm really sorry about the bad experience you had with the last
version of Voice. Four years ago, when I had released the app, I was only 15.
Unfortunately, since I was still learning programming, the app itself was still
very buggy and crashed a lot. I tried my best to give you guys the best
features for free but my programming skills were not good enough at the time.
As years went by and it was time for me to apply to colleges, I slowly stopped
being able to support Voice and it slowly stopped working. Over the last year,
I have received thousands of emails from you guys saying the app is completely
broken.

I've got huge news today. Over the past few months, Voice was
completely remade from the ground up, with the best and latest technology. The
OCR quality is spectacular, even on completely distorted, badly focused, and
incorrectly angled photos with poor lighting. There are new voice control
features. You can simply say the words "Take Picture" and Voice will take
pictures for you. You simply say "Read" and Voice will start reading it to you.

document in front of you. It works in over 30 major languages and

This is an app developed a few years ago by a 15 year-old. I just
received the following from him and downloaded the app. While it doesn't do all
that Voice Dream Scanner does, it is quite impressive. Read on and act quickly
on June 14, 2019.

  Hey Richard,

I'm really sorry about the bad experience you had with the last version
of Voice.

Over the past few months, Voice was completely
remade from the ground up, with the best and latest technology. The OCR quality
is spectacular, even on completely distorted, badly focused, and incorrectly
angled photos with poor lighting. There are new voice control features. You can
simply say the words "Take Picture" and Voice will take pictures for you. You
simply say "Read" and Voice will start reading it to you. Voice will give
extremely accurate field of view reports when it detects a document in front of
you. It works in over 30 major languages and gives you the most powerful OCR
reading tools right in your pocket.

I have decided to make the app free for only the next 24 hours. After
that, it will be on the app store for $4.99. I have always wanted to keep this
app free for you guys, but the problem is that maintaining the app becomes very
difficult when it is completely free. I would rather give you guys an extremely
low-cost app that is the absolute best and regularly supported, rather than a
completely free app that is mediocre and unsupported. Those of you that install
it while it is free will also get future updates for free. Let your friends
know so they can also get it while it's free!

I hope you find this application helpful. I am open to any suggestions
and feedback, feel free to be as brutal as you like. I will try to respond to
your email in less than an hour. I plan to bring even more exciting stuff in
the very near future. Thank you for your time.

That's exactly what I did as well and it reads like a charm. After you enable
microphone and voice etc. you can either dt to take picture and read or use
your voice to say "take picture" "read" etc. It works really well and gives the
percentages on when it is scanning the pictures. I know that Voice Dream
Scanner you can set to automatic so that it will take the picture and read
automatically but this app does really well. And for free we get updates.

This is an app developed a few years ago by a 15 year-old. I just received the
following from him and downloaded the app. While it doesn't do all that Voice
Dream Scanner does, it is quite impressive. Read on and act quickly on June 14,
2019.

Hey Richard,

I'm really sorry about the bad experience you had with the last version of
Voice.

After that, it
will be on the app store for $4.99. I have always wanted to keep this app free
for you guys, but the problem is that maintaining the app becomes very
difficult when it is completely free. I would rather give you guys an extremely
low-cost app that is the absolute best and regularly supported, rather than a
completely free app that is mediocre and unsupported. Those of you that install
it while it is free will also get future updates for free. Let your friends
know so they can also get it while it's free!

Here's the link:
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/voice-take-picture-have-it/id903772588?mt=8

 .

I hope you find this application helpful. I am open to any suggestions and
feedback, feel free to be as brutal as you like. I will try to respond to your
email in less than an hour. I plan to bring even more exciting stuff in the
very near future. Thank you for your time.

I can't find this app in the app store. There are so many Voice selections but

  Hey Richard,

I'm really sorry about the bad experience you had with the last version of
Voice.

After that,
it will be on the app store for $4.99. I have always wanted to keep this app
free for you guys, but the problem is that maintaining the app becomes very
difficult when it is completely free. I would rather give you guys an extremely
low-cost app that is the absolute best and regularly supported, rather than a
completely free app that is mediocre and unsupported. Those of you that install
it while it is free will also get future updates for free. Let your friends
know so they can also get it while it's free!

question about 2 phones, serie saying the same number

2019-06-14 Thread Arlene
This question involves 3 se phones. The one se phone is Wayne's first se phone,
and the 2nd and 3rd phones are on our consumer cellular account. Anyway if we
ask Serie what the phone number is on either one of the consumer cellular
phones it will say the phone number of the first se phone which is the t-mobile
phone. The actual phone numbers for the consumer cellular phones are in the
phone settings. I think both of those phones are set up with his apple id, so I
don't know if this is why the phone is saying that first number, or is there
something we need to adjust? Thank you.

Richard, thank you for telling us about this app. I'm not sure how to use this
app. Of course I can take the picture, and I know where you go into for the
pictures, though it seemed as if there were only 2 pictures there, that were
taken on april 10th. As with other apps, would you be able to read the scanning
after you take the picture? Thank you again for telling us about this app.

Subject: How to Change the Function of AirPods

Bluetooth headphones have been around for years, but Apple changed the game
when they introduced the AirPods. The AirPods look great and are built to be
the most comfortable option for the average person, but their true power of the
AirPods comes through in their functionality and versatility.
AirPods are activated (or deactivated) by double tapping the device once its
in your ear. This is perfect for answering an income phone call or activating
Siri while on the road. You get used to the feeling of the device in your ear.
The default functionality is already expansive, but you can do even more with a
few changes.

  How to Rename Your AirPods
If you want to give your AirPods a unique name aside from "MyName's
AirPods"-which is kind of cliche, don't you think?-there's an easy way to do
so. Just open your AirPod case, then go to Settings > Bluetooth and tap the
Information (the "i" in a bubble) icon next to the listing for your AirPods.
Tap the current name of the device at the top of the screen and choose a new
one. It's as simple as that.

Change the Function of the Double Tap
By default, double-tapping your AirPod activates Siri (or answers an incoming
call.) However, you can change the function to fit your needs-better yet, you
can change the function of each individual AirPod.
For example, you can double tap the left AirPod to skip to the next song and
double tap the right AirPod to jump back to the previous song. You can set the
feature to pause or play your music. You can even double tap to change the
volume.
To set up these functions, just go into the Settings > Bluetooth menu and
look under the heading "Double-Tap on Airpod". Choose either the left or right
AirPod and select what function you want it to carry out.

One final function is the ability to turn off Automatic Ear Detection. This
is on by default, and it means that your AirPods will automatically pause any
audio content when you remove them from your ears. If you deactivate this
feature, audio will play to your AirPods by default whether you are wearing
them or not.

AirPods last for about two and a half hours on a single charge, but will
quickly recharge in their case. If you're looking for a functional set of
Bluetooth earbuds, I wholeheartedly recommend them. AirPods have proven
themselves to be well worth the admittedly-hefty price tag.

Re: Chime app not working?

2019-06-14 Thread Deb Cook Lewis
The Blacktree Chime app does not work for me either. I've noted this
before and have given it up, but nothing makes it work. I'm genuinely
curious why it does work for some and not for others, but I'm not one
of the ones on any device I have. The only time app that works
consistently for me is westminster Chimes.

RE: Everyday tasks that few people do anymore because of technology, USA Today

2019-06-14 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Being able to show a particular charge on a credit card might be fine in some
situations, but it may not be enough when it comes to a product with warranty
and especially not if it was bought at a place where you show other
transactions. Of course it can help a store to find a record of the
transaction, but keeping receipts for certain products or services is still a
good idea.

I use cash & credit card about equally. If you are paying for gym memberships
& home maintenance with cash, then you have to save receipts which I find a
pain. I'd much rather have the credit card statement as a receipt. One
restaurant here gives you a discount if you pay in cash, a nice incentive.

Kelly, I use a lot of cash also in my small town. I just paid all the labor on
a new roof for my house in cash...people love cash.

I wear a braille wrist watch and carry cash. What does that make me?
I love technology but wish to avoid the blind nerd look of multiple talking
devices with wires coming out of my ears and pockets. A white clock face with
black hands on a vintage 70 year old watch looks hip by preserving the
simplicity of telling time.

Carrying cash is a different story. When I go to a small business, I pay in
cash. Waitresses remember me because I tip them in cash, which they can keep
for themselves. Some service businesses expect cash.
The best barbers here only accept cash. At my barbershop, they even have an
old fashioned cash register that rings a bell with each transaction. I also
feel more comfortable handing a cabbie cash in a new city than hand over a
credit card, which could be skimmed. Fees on cards are expensive. I just gave
my neighborhood gym owner several
$100 bills to pay for my gym membership. If I were to use a credit card, it
would cost him about $10. I would rather he receive all of my money instead of
a banker who is doing almost nothing acting as a middleman. Yes, he has an
iPhone and I could zap him the money through Apple Pay Cash, but he co-owns the
business with a partner so the money needs to go from his phone to his personal
account then to the business account. With cash, he easily could divvy up the
money without the transfer hassles.

After I give people cash, they remember me and respond positively to me in the
future. This is particularly so after I put a $50 or $100 bill under their
nose.

Re: placing apps on an iPad

2019-06-14 Thread Richard Turner

you may still have to select filter and tell it to look for iPhone apps.
If the developer did not tag the app as iPad and iPhone, or universal; you
might still miss it.
But, even if it is tagged only as an iPhone app, it will still run on the iPad.
Otherwise, Sieghard covered everything.

If you want apps you purchase on your iPad to also automatically download to

If you already purchased the app then I am not sure if it will download, but I
don’t think so. In this case simply open the app store on your iPad and
download the app. If you don’t want to search the entire app store you can
always tap on My account at the top under any of the tabs in the app store,
then tab on Purchased, then on “MY Purchases” and select “Not on this iPad”.
This will show you all the apps you purchased which are not yet downloaded to

RE: How to Change the Function of AirPods

2019-06-14 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I would rewrite it as follows:
Bluetooth headphones have been around for years, but Apple changed the game
when they introduced the AirPods. The AirPods look great and are built to be
the worst option when it comes to switching seamlessly between your devices
such as your iPhone and Apple watch.
I still don’t understand why Apple who has full control over their hardware and
software can’t achieve what pretty much every other Bluetooth earpiece does
without a fuss when it is paired to an iPhone and an Apple Watch or other
device and that is to seamlessly switch between the devices. Oh well, maybe
they get it right some day.

AirPods are activated (or deactivated) by double tapping the device once its in
your ear. This is perfect for answering an income phone call or activating Siri
while on the road. You get used to the feeling of the device in your ear. The
default functionality is already expansive, but you can do even more with a few
changes.
You can even double tap to change the
volume.
To set up these functions, just go into the Settings > Bluetooth menu and look
under the heading "Double-Tap on Airpod". Choose either the left or right
AirPod and select what function you want it to carry out.

One final function is the ability to turn off Automatic Ear Detection. This is
on by default, and it means that your AirPods will automatically pause any
audio content when you remove them from your ears.

RE: placing apps on an iPad

2019-06-14 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Some iPhone apps won’t be available on the iPad, but if it is you can go to
Settings > iTunes and App Store on your iPad and under the automatic downloads
section enable Apps. The explanation underneath this section is:
Automatically download new purchases, including free, made on other devices.
If you want apps you purchase on your iPad to also automatically download to
your iPhone then enable this on your iPhone as well.
This will show you all the apps you purchased which are not yet downloaded to
your iPad.

RE: Everyday tasks that few people do anymore because of technology, USA Today

2019-06-14 Thread sherrywells1157
I use cash & credit card about equally. If you are paying for gym memberships
& home maintenance with cash, then you have to save receipts which I find a
pain. I'd much rather have the credit card statement as a receipt. One
restaurant here gives you a discount if you pay in cash, a nice incentive.

I wear a braille wrist watch and carry cash. What does that make me?
I love technology but wish to avoid the blind nerd look of multiple
talking devices with wires coming out of my ears and pockets. A white
clock face with black hands on a vintage 70 year old watch looks hip
by preserving the simplicity of telling time.

Carrying cash is a different story. When I go to a small business, I
pay in cash. Waitresses remember me because I tip them in cash, which
they can keep for themselves. Some service businesses expect cash.
The best barbers here only accept cash. At my barbershop, they even
have an old fashioned cash register that rings a bell with each
transaction. I also feel more comfortable handing a cabbie cash in a
new city than hand over a credit card, which could be skimmed. Fees
on cards are expensive. I just gave my neighborhood gym owner several
$100 bills to pay for my gym membership. If I were to use a credit
card, it would cost him about $10. I would rather he receive all of
my money instead of a banker who is doing almost nothing acting as a
middleman. Yes, he has an iPhone and I could zap him the money
through Apple Pay Cash, but he co-owns the business with a partner so
the money needs to go from his phone to his personal account then to
the business account. With cash, he easily could divvy up the money
without the transfer hassles.

After I give people cash, they remember me and respond positively to
me in the future. This is particularly so after I put a $50 or $100
bill under their nose.

How to Change the Function of AirPods

2019-06-14 Thread 'Marcio' via VIPhone
Bluetooth headphones have been around for years, but Apple changed the
game when they introduced the AirPods. The AirPods look great and are
built to be the most comfortable option for the average person, but
their true power of the AirPods comes through in their functionality and
versatility.
AirPods are activated (or deactivated) by double tapping the device once
its in your ear. This is perfect for answering an income phone call or
activating Siri while on the road. You get used to the feeling of the
device in your ear. The default functionality is already expansive, but
you can do even more with a few changes.

   How to Rename Your AirPods

If you want to give your AirPods a unique name aside from "MyName's
AirPods"-which is kind of cliche, don't you think?-there's an easy way
to do so. Just open your AirPod case, then go to Settings > Bluetooth
and tap the Information (the "i" in a bubble) icon next to the listing
for your AirPods.
Tap the current name of the device at the top of the screen and choose a
new one. It's as simple as that.

Change the Function of the Double Tap

By default, double-tapping your AirPod activates Siri (or answers an
incoming call.) However, you can change the function to fit your
needs-better yet, you can change the function of each individual AirPod.
For example, you can double tap the left AirPod to skip to the next song
and double tap the right AirPod to jump back to the previous song. You
can set the feature to pause or play your music. You can even double tap
to change the volume.
To set up these functions, just go into the Settings > Bluetooth menu
and look under the heading "Double-Tap on Airpod". Choose either the
left or right AirPod and select what function you want it to carry out.

One final function is the ability to turn off Automatic Ear Detection.
This is on by default, and it means that your AirPods will automatically
pause any audio content when you remove them from your ears. If you
deactivate this feature, audio will play to your AirPods by default
whether you are wearing them or not.

AirPods last for about two and a half hours on a single charge, but will
quickly recharge in their case. If you're looking for a functional set
of Bluetooth earbuds, I wholeheartedly recommend them. AirPods have
proven themselves to be well worth the admittedly-hefty price tag.

Re: Using My iPad, More and More

2019-06-14 Thread Angela L Griffith
Hi,

I’d love to hear more about the Apple smart keyboard, as far as how it differs
from other keyboards, and where I can find it.

Also, are you aware of any particular settings on the iPad, which might make it
easier interacting with the larger physical touchscreen?

I hope that made sense,
Angela L Griffith
