Re: Monitoring steps with iPhone or Apple watch?

2019-09-08 Thread Michael Maslo
All you have to do is go into the health app and look at the steps you have
taken. Niño set up needed.
I have Apple Watch and download a secondary app but not needed.

How to protect your hearing with iOS 13 and watchOS 6, 9 to 5 Mac

2019-09-08 Thread M. Taylor
How to protect your hearing with iOS 13 and watchOS 6
By Chance Miller

watchOS 6 and iOS 13 are just a few weeks away from being released to the
public, and both updates include new features that you might not have even
known you needed. With this year's watchOS 6 release for Apple Watch and iOS
13 for iPhone, Apple is implementing a pair of new hearing features,
designed to help you prevent exposing yourself to loud environments and
headphones levels for extended periods of time.
Here's how both of those new features work.

Headphone Audio Level
In iOS 13, you can now view audio levels from the headphones you use. Apple
categorizes your headphone volume levels into two decibel levels: "OK" to
"Loud."

How can you find this data? On your iPhone running iOS 13, open the Health
app and tap the "Search" tab along the bottom. You should then see a new
"Hearing" option, tap that and look for "Headphone Audio Levels."

In this section of the Health app, you can see detailed information about
your headphone audio levels over the last hour, day, week, month, and year
(when sufficient data is available). Apple then categorizes your headphone
volume level into "OK" or "Loud." Long-term exposure under 80 decibels is
considered "OK" while "repeated, long-term export to sound at or above 80
decibels" could lead to hearing damage and is considered "Loud."

By tapping the "Show All Filters" button, you can also filter audio levels
by headphone type, seeing which headphones promote the best listening habits
and which are often louder than others. This interface also shows daily
average, your volume range, and more.

Apple says that Headphone Audio Level works best with its Beats and AirPods
products, but that levels can be estimated when using other headphones.
Here's how Apple explains the feature:

This represents the volume of your headphone audio measured in decibels
(dB). It can be helpful to understand how long you're exposed to loud audio
as this can affect your hearing.

These measurements are most accurate when using Apple or Beats headphones.
Audio played through other headphones or speakers connected via a wire can
be estimated based on the volume of your device.

Noise app
Meanwhile, Apple Watch is also adding its own new feature for helping
protect your hearing. The new watchOS Noise app is designed to alert you
with your Apple Watch when you're in a loud environment that could damage
your hearing.

To setup this feature, you'll want to open the Apple Watch companion app on
your iPhone. From there, look for the new "Noise" option among the list of
Apple-developed applications. By default, the Noise app will alert you when
your environment sound level exceeds 90 decibels. You can adjust that to
your liking, however.
At 90dB, the World Health Organization says the volume could damage your
hearing after 30 minutes of exposure per day
. 80 decibels, Limit: About 5 hours / day
. 85 decibels, Limit: About 2 hours / day
. 90 decibels, Limit: About 30 minutes / day
. 95 decibels, Limit: About 10 minutes / day
. 100 decibels, Limit: About 3 minutes / day

On your Apple Watch itself, the Noise app provides a live-updating bar graph
that shows the noise level of your environment with an explanation of the
sound levels. The app will either informing you sound levels are not
harmful, or that you should consider using hearing protection.

There's also a Noise app complication that offers live updates about the
noise level of your environment. The complication will either indicate that
the noise level is okay or too loud.

Wrap up
watchOS 6 and iOS 13 include a pair of notable features to help protect your
hearing. The Headphone Audio Level feature aims to help you better protect
your ears while using headphones, while the Noise app for watchOS is aimed
at warning you preemptively when you're in a loud environment.
What do you think of these features? Let us know down in the comments.

Monitoring steps with iPhone or Apple watch?

2019-09-08 Thread Tom Cramer
Hello. I've been asked if I wanted to join a group of people who will
begin monitoring their steps on a daily basis. A goal will be set and
I guess we'll keep track of and report our steps weekly.
People told me I can do this using either my iPhone or Apple Watch.
I'd love to know what I need to do in order to do this, especially
since I wear my watch all the time. I'm guessing it's in the Health
app, but I am not sure what to do or activate from there. And, do I
need to activate this on the phone before I use my watch?
Thanks for any help.
Tom

If you turn Background App refresh off, i.e. you go to General > Background App

then on the next screen you have 3 choices and you tap the one you want. If it
is Off, then “Off” will show as selected, if you swipe right you have options
for WiFi and WiFi and Cellular Data.

If you tap on WiFi and by doing so select it, this means Background App Refresh
only will happen if you are on WiFi.

If you tap WiFi and Cellular Data, then background app refresh will happen on
WiFi but also on cellular data.

Select either WiFi or WiFi and Cellular Data and then perform a scrub gesture

RE: clearing memory

2019-09-08 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
When I just tried it on my iPhone 8 I didn’t get the SIRI beep at all, after
the tap to power off prompt appeared I pushed down and held down on the virtual
home button and after maybe 8 or so seconds I got the lock screen with the
prompt to enter my passcode, it did not simply go back to the home screen.

Doing a Google search for “How to clear memory on the iPhone” resulted in a
lot of articles, many older and referring to phones with a mechanical home
button and apparently even the iPhone 7 which I believe had the first virtual
home button still works this way. Anyways, I also found an article from 2018
which explains how to do this on the iPhone 7 and older phones as well as the
iPhone 8 and iPhone X and, I assume XR/XS/XS Max.
I tried the method described in the article on my iPhone 8 and the result was
the same as pressing and holding down the virtual home button, I ended up on
the lock screen where I had to enter my passcode, Touch Id at that point did
not unlock my phone and focus did not return simply to the home screen. If
anybody wants to try this on the iPhone X/XR/XS, here is the text of the
article:

Speed Up iPhone: How to Clear RAM on iPhone to Make It Faster
By Conner Carey updated on 04/10/2018

How do you clear RAM on iPhone and what does clearing RAM do? Resetting RAM on
your iPhone makes it perform faster. Memory on iPhone is about how many various
activities are going on at once. Clearing RAM allows iPhone to clear out any
processing it doesn’t need to currently do. When you clear RAM on your iPhone,
nothing on the surface changes. But you will see and feel the difference when
using your iPhone. This is one of the best ways to make your iPhone faster in
just a couple short steps. You can clear RAM on any iPhone model, including the
latest iPhone 7. Here’s how to clear RAM on iPhone to make it faster.

What Does Clearing RAM Do on iPhone?
This is one of those tricks that rarely gets talked about, but if your phone is
feeling sluggish, clearing the RAM should help give it a boost. Clearing iPhone
RAM is like sweeping cobwebs from a closet—the information that’s cleared isn’t
needed so we reset RAM to free up usable memory on our iPhones. With less
information to process and filter through, your iPhone is free to run faster.

How to Clear RAM on iPhone 7 & Older iPhones
Hold down the Sleep/Wake button.
When Slide to Power off appears, let go of the Sleep/Wake Button.
Hold down your Home button.
After a few seconds, your screen will flash blank and then return to Home
screen, which means you’ve cleared your iPhone’s RAM. Some users have had
trouble with this and I’m not sure why.
If Siri comes up when you hold down the Home button, one user suggested turning
Siri off to clear RAM and then turning Siri back on when you’re done. For most
this should go smoothly and be easy to do. If your iPhone has been particularly
sluggish, you’ll feel how much faster your iPhone is instantly.

How to Clear RAM on iPhone 8 & X
First, you will need to turn on Assistive Touch. Go to Settings > General >
Accessibility > Assistive Touch and toggle Assistive Touch on.
A gray and white button will appear on the screen.
Next, return to the General page in your Settings app.
Scroll down to the bottom of the General menu and tap Shut Down.
A screen should pop up telling you to slide to power off with a Cancel button
at the bottom.
Tap on the Assistive Touch button and then press and hold on the on-screen Home
button until your iPhone flashes and returns to the Home screen.
It’s good to note that clearing RAM on your iPhone will not quit any of the
apps you had open; the app will simply reload. Everything should be as it was,
just faster.
That's all there is to it!

You want to hold the side button down for about three seconds or until it comes

should take you back to your home screen.

button until it said IPhone shutting down, then held down the home button on my
IPhone 7. Voice over didn’t come back, but I heard the siri beep. Should I
have held it down longer?
Thanks.

2019-09-08 Thread Gordon
Ok this is a little more involved on the 10R. First you need to head
over to settings, general, accessibility. Once you tap on accessibility,
go down until you find assistive touch. Go in there and turn it on.
You're going to see several options once you turn it on, but you don't
need any of those. Once you have it on, go back to settings and general.
At the bottom of the general screen you'll see where it says shut down.
Double tap there and then look on the right bottom part of the screen
for the assistive touch button. Double tap that and then look for the
virtual home button at the bottom  of the screen. Once you find it,
double tap and hold for about 10 seconds. At that point your memory and
temporary cache is cleaned. When you're finished you might want to go
back into settings, general, accessibility and turn assistive touch off
if you don't want that button to be on the screen.

You want to hold the side button down for about three seconds or until
it comes up with the shutdown option. Then release it and hold down
the home button. It should take you back to your home screen.

And how do I get background app refresh turned on. I’ve gone into settings,

refresh off button, but it still says “off.” Do I need to go into some other
setting to toggle that back on? Thanks.

I did exactly that. I held the screen lock button until it said “power off”
then released it and held the home button down. After a few seconds I heard
the siri beep. I continued to hold the home button down for 30 seconds. When
I released it, it took me to the “some things you can ask me.” Prompt.

I guess that’s okay and I cleared the memory. This seems to be my IPhone

Thanks.

clearing memory

2019-09-08 Thread Paul and Paula Jordan
Hi. I was just looking through my archives list and found some information
about clearing the memory. I decided to do this. I held down the screen
lock button until it said IPhone shutting down, then held down the home
button on my IPhone 7. Voice over didn’t come back, but I heard the siri
beep. Should I have held it down longer?

Thanks.

God bless!

Re: Charging with newest 12 IOS

2019-09-08 Thread Christopher Chaltain
This advice is counter to what I've read on caring for a lithium ion
battery, so it would be good to get some references. Everything I've
read suggests frequent shallow charging
https://batteryuniversity.com/learn/article/how_to_prolong_lithium_based_batteries

I did find this article on Apple's battery optimization feature in IOS
13.
https://www.macworld.com/article/3408336/ios-13s-new-optimized-battery-charging-feature-explained.html

Note that it doesn't say anything about not charging your phone daily.
It sounds to me like this feature will try to help with more frequent
shallow charging.

Where did you read that? I guess you can find somebody saying this
online somewhere just as  you can find many who say leaving your
phone plugged in makes no difference, once the battery is fully
charged it will turn off charging which is indicated by the “100%, On
AC Power” when you look at your battery indicator.

Hi,

It is actually not recommended to charge overnight.

For that reason, Apple has implemented Optimized battery charging
feature. This can be found inside settings, battery, battery health.
The feature can then be changed.

Did they introduce the new smart charging with the latest IOS update?
Last night I put my IPhone X on the charging pad as always. However,
it only charged to 80% and stopped. I returned it to the pad but it
never went to 100%.

I don’t understand why this feature would be advantageous since I
have heard over and over that it is not possible to over-charge your
IPhone.

RE: Charging with newest 12 IOS

2019-09-08 Thread Feliciano Godoy
Hi,
It is actually not recommended to charge overnight.
For that reason, Apple has implemented Optimized battery charging feature. This
can be found inside settings, battery, battery health. The feature can then be
changed.

Subject: Charging with newest 12 IOS

Did they introduce the new smart charging with the latest IOS update? Last
night I put my IPhone X on the charging pad as always. However, it only charged
to 80% and stopped. I returned it to the pad but it never went to 100%.
I don’t understand why this feature would be advantageous since I have heard
over and over that it is not possible to over-charge your IPhone.
