RE: Whose cellular data is being used on a Facetime call?

2020-01-28 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
It is like with any Voip service, quality is much better than a regular phone
call especially if both parties are using a fast LTE or WiFi connection.
Also, if you have people around the world you speak to where despite the huge
drop in long distance rates it still costs money, then using Facetime Audio (or
Facetime which means with video) or any other service such as Skype, Facebook
Messenger, WhatsApp etc. makes a lot of sense. As long as you are on WiFi the
call is free, I could be sitting at the airport in Manila or Singapore and call
my friend in Germany without having to pay a cent.
As for audio vs video, an audio only connection uses less data and there are
times when I really don't need or want video such as on Sunday morning when my
friend calls from Germany and I'm still lying in bed in my PJ's.

What is the point of audio FaceTime? I didn't know there was such a thing. Are
a FaceTime and a video call the same.

I do facetime calls with a friend of mine and we are both using WIFI.
I usually do audio facetime calls with my friend, although I have done a
facetime video call with my sister a couple of times.

A couple of questions about the Logitech G613 Lightspeed Wireless mechanical gaming keyboard

2020-01-28 Thread Alan Lemly
Hi Sieghard and List,

I received my Logitech G613 Lightspeed keyboard today and very much like its
look and feel. I have a couple of questions I hope you can help me with:

1. Along the top of the keyboard diagonally and to the right of the F12
function key are 3 round buttons. Actually, the leftmost one of these is
actually a slider switch and I believe the 2 actuall buttons to its right
are for selecting either Bluetooth or USB operation. My question is what is
that slider switch for? I've been told it might have a picture of a joystick
on it but I'm quite perplexed as to its function. There also appears to be
one more slider switch on the right side edge toward the top which is in a
down position. I'm thinking maybe this is some sort of power on and off
switch but I'm seeking confirmation.

2. My last question concerns powering this keyboard. Does it have user
replaceable batteries and if so, where is the battery compartment? The
keyboard is not rechargeable so I'm curious how I will keep it powered.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Alan Lemly

Hi,

Touch the vertical line between the apps and flick up or down. One of the
choices is to dismiss one of the apps.

From Apple Insider: 'Ring's app caught spying on users, sharing data with third-parties By Mike Peterson Tuesday, January 28, 2020,

2020-01-28 Thread Richard Turner
Amazon's Ring for Android app is loaded with third-party trackers harvesting a
"plethora" of customer data, a new investigation claims -and an Amazon engineer
for the product wants it completely shut down. The Electronic Frontier
Foundation has discovered that third-party tracking software within the Ring
doorbell app is sending customer data to four analytics and marketing
companies, including Facebook, Google, MixPanel and AppsFlyer. That data
includes personally identifiable information such as names and private IP
addresses. Facebook, for example, is alerted when users open the Ring app, as
well as when they perform certain device actions. Mobile analytics company
AppsFlyer is sent a similar mix of data, but also receives information
collected from a device's sensors including its gyroscope and magnetometer. The
information sent to MixPanel, another data analytics firm, includes a user's
full name, email address, device data and app settings. While Ring also sends
data to Google's Crashalytics service, the EFF wasn't able to determine the
extent of the sharing in the report published on Tuesday . The EFF points out
that even small bits of user data can be combined by tracking firms to create a
larger picture of a user's digital habits. That "fingerprint" could allow
third-party companies to surveil what users are doing across various apps and
devices. Importantly, the nonprofit group claims that this tracking is taking
place without a user's knowledge, consent or ability to disable it.
The data collected is sent over encrypted HTTPS and is delivered in a way that
eludes analysis, the EFF said. The investigation's methodology included
observing that data flow via man-in-the-middle techniques, a tactic often used
by hackers to intercept internet traffic.
Since the EFF investigation focused on Ring's Android app, it isn't clear
whether the iOS version has similar privacy risks.
Apple's App Store Review Guidelines do include provisions that protect users
from many data collection practices, however.
In light of the potential for abuse and other privacy risks, at least one
Amazon engineer is calling for the smart doorbell company to be shut down. "The
deployment of connected home security cameras that allow footage to be queried
centrally are simply not compatible with a free society.
The privacy issues are not fixable with regulation and there is no balance that
can be struck," said Max Eliaser in a Medium post . "Ring should be shut down
immediately and not brought back.
Repeat offender This isn't the first time Ring has been in the spotlight for
alleged privacy blunders. In 2019, The Intercept reported that both engineers
and executives at Ring had "highly privileged access" to live feeds from
customer cameras.
And earlier this month, Ring fired four employees who had allegedly abused that
access to spy on customers. Privacy advocates have also raised concerns about
Ring's links to law enforcement , as well as the potential implementation of
facial recognition in a platform already beset by surveillance and privacy
controversies. .

Re: Whose cellular data is being used on a Facetime call?

2020-01-28 Thread Steve Matzura
The answer is simple and should end all discourse. If a handset--phone,
tablet--is on a Wi-Fi network, it's off the cellular grid and no charges
occur. Reverse the conditions--phone is not on a Wi-Fi network--the data
meter is running. It has nothing whatsoever to do with who is on a call,
whether it's telephone, FaceTime, WhatsApp, Periscope, Backpack Studio,
Google Duo, YouTube, Downcast, Overcast, Apple or Google Maps, iCloud
Drive, Spotify, Apple Music, or any application that accesses data
wirelessly. It's only to do with the network which the individual phone
is using. Home Wi-Fi (and some public Wi-Fi networks) are free; the
network provided by the cell phone service provider allows a certain
amount of data to be transferred per month, after which any additional
data transfer is charged to the customer account according to a
published fee schedule. Short version: If I'm talking to you on Zello
and I'm on a Wi-Fi network and you're not, my usage is free, while yours
is running up the bytes against your monthly cellular network data
allotment.

Dear Allen & list:

Rather than guess at who pays for data used by a Facebook call, you are best to
just ask your cellular airtime provider. Then to will know for sure.

Yes, it’s wisest to only take or make Facebook calls when on WIFI.

Mote that some WIFI networks block the ports used for Facebook & Skype. This is
usually cue to bandwidth limitations.

Hi Anna,

I suspect you're right. So, since my cellular data plan is extremely limited, I
don't want to participate in a Facetime call unless I'm on my wifi network.

I do facetime calls with a friend of mine and we are both using WIFI.
I usually do audio facetime calls with my friend, although I have done a
facetime video call with my sister a couple of times.

No, you cannot ask Siri anything while on call, reason being when you say
something to Siri the voice passes through microphone and during a call it is
already occupied as it's being used while replying to person at the other end.

Hope this helps

There is a setting for Background app refresh under settings, general.
But, the main thing, is to clear the app switcher when you are done using an

For users with monthly data cap, the easiest way to keep a check on data limit
is to Reset Usage Statistics of the Cellular Data on monthly basis and to do
this just go to Settings > Cellular > Scroll down and you'll get find Reset
Statistics.

Also Enable the low data mode for cellular data by going through Settings >
Cellular > Cellular Data option > Scroll Down and Enable Low data mode.

With the above 2 options one can easily keep a track on the cellular data
usage, also less data will be utilized.

Hope this helps!

Hi Anna,

I suspect you're right. So since my cellular data plan is extremely limited, I
don't want to participate in a Facetime call unless I'm on my wifi network.

Hi alan,

My guess is that each person is charged for the data they use.

Hi List,

I've recently learned that Facetime also has an audio calling feature when
contacting someone with an Apple device. Facetime calls are routed over the
internet as opposed to using cell plan minutes. My question is which caller on
a Facetime call is being charged for cellular data if they are not on wifi? I
normally would expect the one initiating the call would be charged but I'm not
sure both parties aren't being charged which is why I'm asking.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Two Apps On The Same IPad Screen?

2020-01-28 Thread Anna Dresner
Hi Arnold,

Yes, you can have two apps on an iPad screen. The second app you want to open
needs to be in the dock. when the first one is open, touch near the bottom of
the iPad screen and slide your finger up until you hear a click. Then slide it
back down and then lift your finger. When you find the app on the dock that you
want to open, flick up or down. You have the option to open the second app in
split view or slide over. With split view, each app takes up part of the
screen. with slide over, the second app floats on top of the first. I find
split view more reliable. There's a line between the two apps. You can flick up
and down for options to control how much of the screen each one takes.

applevis did a great podcast on this in September; I recommend that you check
it out for more details.

Best,
Anna

I was told today that one can have two different apps running at the same

I do facetime calls with a friend of mine and we are both using WIFI.
I usually do audio facetime calls with my friend, although I have done
a facetime video call with my sister a couple of times.
