RE: Bose headphones?

2020-02-10 Thread Simon A Fogarty
Hi Shermeen

A lot of the newer headphone models give you both Bluetooth and a wire also.

But as for a wired headphone with lightening
You will have to go with the adapter in most cases,

I have not yet seen a wired or wire for headphones with the lightening
connecter rather than a 3.5mm headphone jack.

I highly recommend the going to a store and asking for a demo of their
headphones especially the quiet comforts with your own music,

Not the displays music

With your own music you know what you should be hearing and it gives a better
reality to what your after.

Thanks, all. The comments about wired vs. wireless are interesting. Do most
makers of headphones allow you to plug directly into the lightning port? or
must you always have an adapter handy? I tend not to be a fan of wires as a
concept, but have not thoroughly tested Bluetooth headphones to compare.

RE: Thoughts on iPhone9?

2020-02-10 Thread Simon A Fogarty
Yes we are looking at upgrading now but there are a lot of anti 5 G ers
protesting the 5 g world due to what they say is an untested system.

I have started only updating phones every 2 years because I don’t think there
is a big enough change between the numbers like 10 and 11 to justify paying for
an s model.

That argument is probably more about whether Huawei should play a roll in
setting up the 5G infrastructure, I highly doubt a country like New Zealand
will not have 5G as this is the inevitable next step. It maybe another year or
two before we see broader availability, but as I said, I buy my iPhones now
with a 3 to 4 year lifespan in mind. In my opinion the time when upgrading
every 2 years or even every year are over. The only time I upgraded from one
iPhone to the next the following year was between 2010 and 2011. I bought my
first iPhone 4 in 2010 and when the 4S with SIRI came out in 2011 I really
wanted that. After that I upgraded to a 5S in 2013, 2 years after I got the 4S,
then I got the 6S Plus in 2015, again 2 years, then I got an iPhone 8 in 2018
which was 3 years after the 6S Plus. I expect I have the iPhone 8 for 3 years
and who knows, maybe I’ll even keep it for 4 years, it all depends on what
deals are being offered. When my wife and I bought the iPhone 8 we actually had
already decided to stick with our 6S phones for another year and we then would
have bought probably an XR last year, but around Black Friday in 2018 our
provider offered the iPhone 8 64Gb for a $150 downpayment and $15 over 2 years
which adds up to a total of $510 and back then if I had bought an unlocked
iPhone 8 from Apple it would have been $819 so getting it for $310 less seemed
like a pretty good deal and after selling my 6S Plus at the time for $400 I
essentially am paying a bit more than $100. All these prices are Canadian
Dollars.

If you don’t want to spend the money then why bother to buy this upcoming phone?
Your iPhone 8 is a perfectly fine phone and it will serve you well for another
2 years, I have one myself and certainly wouldn’t even dream about buying this
upcoming phone which almost certainly will not have 5G support.
Whether I buy an iPhone 12 in the fall depends greatly on what Apple comes up
with, but for me it is also unlikely since it will probably have first
generation support for 5G, and maybe even first generation support for under
display touch ID, but in my opinion the phones nowadays are such mature
products and so expensive that I want to get at least 3 years out of one and
even better 4. I figure if I guy whatever iPhone comes out in the fall of 2021
I get a model which better supports some of these new technologies, by then my
iPhone 8 which I only bought in December of 2018 will be 3 years old and it
will have earned it’s money.
I know some people are on plans which allow them to upgrade each year, but of
course these types of plans don’t come for free an d in the end Apple and the
providers get their money out of you.

I'm not sure of the cost of them in your part of the world but the sound

 Check them out.

Happy Monday all,

Is anyone using Bose over-the-ear or on-ear headphones? can you comment on
sound quality of music? I'd like to feel as though I'm right there, conducting
the orchestra or starring in the song I'm listening to, if you know the feeling
I'm after. Good bass is a must, although not too obnoxious (you know when
you're in a car, stopped at a light, and the bass of the car next to you is
rattling everything within a kilometer range? that's not what I'm after).

And of course, if anyone has other recommendations, that would be great. Note
that I am not looking for anything that goes in the ear itself.

Thank you!

RE: Re: Bose headphones?

2020-02-10 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Ed,

I did buy the Logitech H800 and find them comfortable, otherwise I’d say they
are adequate but not more.
Sound quality is mediocre and their 6-hour battery life is ridiculously short
for such a large headset.
The dual USB and Bluetooth functionality is nice, being able to charge while
using is actually good and not something most Bluetooth headsets can do.
Lastly, the power switch which slides from the off position to Bluetooth in the
middle and USB if you slide it up another click is of rather poor quality and
mine sometimes seems to not work already.

I also recently purchased a Sony
WH-CH510
Bluetooth headset, the link I provided is for Amazon.com where they go for
$59.99 and in this case it even includes a hard case. This is more or less the
same as the Logitech H800 and while they can’t be used with a USB dongle, they
sound definitely better and boast up to 35 hours battery life, are Bluetooth
5.0 and charge via USB-C. They are also on-ear, one small disadvantage is that
they seem to fit a little bit tighter than the Logitech H800, but still fairly
comfortable.

Sieghard

Yes, Bose are good, but I question paying $300 or more for a pair of Bluetooth
headsets, they are still Bluetooth headsets and until this new Bluetooth
technology which I read about a couple of weeks ago makes its debut, Bluetooth
just can't touch the sound quality of a wired headsets. Then there is the
question of price in general, you can easily spend $2,000 or more for a true
audio file quality headset and that’s not even talking about a dedicated
headset amplifier to drive your high-end headset. But I guess that is beyond
what most people are looking for just as most of my outdoor or hunting

You may not notice a lag when playing or resuming audio, but believe me, there
is no Bluetooth headset at this point with no lag, simply not technically
possible and it also does not really matter whether it’s Bluetooth 2.1, 3, 4,
4.1 or 5.
I have had relatively inexpensive Bluetooth 2.1 or 3 headsets which had less
lag than a much more expensive set which used 4.1.

deals are being offered.
Dollars.

I’m interested in it for the data speeds but I don’t see the networks and or

Not to mention there is some great arguements around new Zealand currently

Sounds like the iPhone 9 will be the best of all worlds. I hope the pesky IOS
13 bugs disappear and it works like IOS 12, smooth and reliable with 13
features. I will scoop up a 9 if that happens, maybe. I like my 8 and not
enthused about spending more money.

Re: changing orientation on the iphone

2020-02-10 Thread PRAMIT BHARGAVA
Hi Rebecca,

1. Access the Control Center by touching the bottom of any screen then
dragging upward.
Note : For the iPhone X and newer models swipe downward from the
upper-right corner of the Home or Lock screen to access Control Center.
2. Tap the Portrait Orientation icon to lock or unlock screen portrait
orientation.
Note : When the icon is highlighted in white, the screen is locked into
portrait orientation mode.
For easy acess keep the Orientation lock OFF, so when the device will be
held in a landscape mode the screen will tilt automatically or once the
screen is tilted open the Control Center and lock the orientation.

Hope this helps!

That is exactly what Audio Ducking is for, it will reduce the volume of any
other audio so it's easier to hear Voiceover. I have this turned on at all time

When I call, the automated announcement is louder than the numbers, and I can't
hear the number for the announcement going on. Should I turn Audio Ducking on
before placing calls? This is the case with Bluetooth, headset or speaker.

But I guess that is beyond
what most people are looking for just as most of my outdoor or hunting
customers buy a $300 to $700 pair of binoculars and not the $3,200 pair of
Swarovskis.

If you really want to make an informed decision, spend an hour or so reading
some or all of the information on this website:

Audiophile 101: The Beginner Guide to Headphones

 & Hi-Res Audio

Then also take a look at this site which includes many examples of headsets and
links to buying them on Amazon, Bose, by the way, usually doesn’t make it onto
these types of lists:

I just have one problem with the keypad, and that is that I can't hear it
whenever dealing with automated directions - can't with Bluetooth, headset,

I find the big advantage of a larger screen is the on-screen menus and
keyboards are easier to use. With my iPhone 4S, my big hands could barely

If you don’t want to spend the money then why bother to buy this upcoming
phone?

Your iPhone 8 is a perfectly fine phone and it will serve you well for
another 2 years, I have one myself and certainly wouldn’t even dream about
buying this upcoming phone which almost certainly will not have 5G support.

Whether I buy an iPhone 12 in the fall depends greatly on what Apple comes
up with, but for me it is also unlikely since it will probably have first
generation support for 5G, and maybe even first generation support for under
display touch ID, but in my opinion the phones nowadays are such mature
products and so expensive that I want to get at least 3 years out of one and
even better 4. I figure if I guy whatever iPhone comes out in the fall of
2021, I get a model which better supports some of these new technologies, by
then my iPhone 8 which I only bought in December of 2018 will be 3 years old
and it will have earned its money.

I know some people are on plans which allow them to upgrade each year, but
of course these types of plans don’t come for free a d in the end Apple and
the providers get their money out of you.

Try the Logitech H800 headset. They are wireless but can be plugged in and use
while charging. They are light, excellent Bluetooth range and are price around
$65. No wires hanging out like on the Koss. Also some report on the reviews
that the wireless Koss Bluetooth is poor.

I know some people are on plans which allow them to upgrade each year, but of
course these types of plans don’t come for free an d in the end Apple and the
providers get their money out of you.

costs them an extra license fee, and only works with Apple gear ... most
aren't going to go that route. My TreeLab's have a conventional audio port
(which I've never used, but I assume it works). Generally, if I'm using
wired I use wired (I've got many pairs of headphones, 1970's vintage
electrostatic and vintage Sennheiser, etc. But it is good to have a
potential backup (especially on airplanes :>)

Re: Bose headphones?

2020-02-10 Thread Shermeen Khan
Thanks, all. The comments about wired vs. wireless are interesting. Do
most makers of headphones allow you to plug directly into the
lightning port? or must you always have an adapter handy? I tend not
to be a fan of wires as a concept, but have not thoroughly tested
Bluetooth headphones to compare.

Hi List,

Often I'm playing some sort of media on my iPhone and don't want to be
interrupted by notifications which seem to have a knack for popping up at the
most inconvenient times. Do you have any suggestions for the easiest way to
turn off notifications and turn them back on later? I'm thinking maybe engaging
the mute switch on my iPhone 8 might do this but I'm not sure if that's right
or if it's the best method.

I'm running iOS 13.3.1 and thanks in advance for any help.

Re: Bose headphones?

2020-02-10 Thread Richard Turner
I had a pair of Bose wired headphones that were great!
When they wore out, I got a pair of Plantronics BackBeat or BeatSense,
something like that, that were both wired and bluetooth.
They were less expensive than the Bose, about $120, and to my ears, sounded as
good.
They stopped holding a charge so I just use them as wired headphones.
The subjectivity of sound and the wide variance in hearing, means that you
should always try before buy, or buy with a place that makes getting a refund
easy; like Amazon.

Hi Rebecca,

If the orientation isn't locked, put the phone flat in landscape orientation,
and then lift the back edge so that the screen is tilting toward you. The iPad
will switch into landscape orientation. then go into Control center and lock
the orientation if the student wants to use it in that orientation all the time.

changing orientation on the iphone

2020-02-10 Thread Rebecca Ilniski
Hi all. I haven't done this in a long time and am asking how do you change from
portrait mode to landscape mode on the iPhone? I'm asking for a student since
I'm helping him with his phone. Hehas an iPad and wants to use his phone in
landscape mode. Thanks.

2020-02-10 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Yes, Bose are good, but I question paying $300 or more for a pair of Bluetooth
headsets, they are still Bluetooth headsets and until this new Bluetooth
technology which I read about a couple of weeks ago makes its debut, Bluetooth
just can't touch the sound quality of a wired headsets. Then there is the
question of price in general, you can easily spend $2,000 or more for a true
audio file quality headset and that’s not even talking about a dedicated
headset amplifier to drive your high-end headset. But I guess that is beyond
what most people are looking for just as most of my outdoor or hunting
customers buy a $300 to $700 pair of binoculars and not the $3,200 pair of
Swarovskis.

If you really want to make an informed decision, spend an hour or so reading
some or all of the information on this website:

Audiophile 101: The Beginner Guide to Headphones & Hi-Res
Audio

Then also take a look at this site which includes many examples of headsets and
links to buying them on Amazon, Bose, by the way, usually doesn’t make it onto
these types of lists:

TOP 30 BEST AUDIOPHILE HEADPHONES FOR
2020

Here are two examples of the very high-end:

Sennheiser HD 820 Closed-Back
Headphone

Or this one:
Sony Signature Hi-Res Headphone, Black

Have fun,

The Mute switch may work, also Do Not Disturb as long as you turn off the
setting in Settings > Do Not Disturb to allow notifications when the phone is
unlocked.
Of course you could also just pull up the control centre and turn on Airplane

Dollars.

Can I temporarily turn off notifications?

2020-02-10 Thread Alan Lemly
Hi List,

Often I'm playing some sort of media on my iPhone and don't want to be
interrupted by notifications which seem to have a knack for popping up at
the most inconvenient times. Do you have any suggestions for the easiest way
to turn off notifications and turn them back on later? I'm thinking maybe
engaging the mute switch on my iPhone 8 might do this but I'm not sure if
that's right or if it's the best method.

I'm running iOS 13.3.1 and thanks in advance for any help.

Mine is called a Black Webb. It came from Wal-Mart, as I have said and was
$19.99. So far, I have had no problem with it. It is so convenient to just lay
the phone on the thing, and away she goes charging!

Because that is what it said when I ordered mine from Amazon Canada and they
didn't last more than 2 months and one thing you can be certain of is that
Apple will not sell on Amazon.
I have a retail business and sell a brand of optics called Vortex. They make
binoculars, spotting scopes, rifle scopes and so on and you can find their
stuff on Amazon and all the while Vortex has no idea where it comes from since
they say it most certainly does not come from them or any of their dealers who
care because if Vortex found out that dealer would be not a dealer any more.
If you think Amazon itself really cares whether its sellers sell authentic or
knock-off products you'd be surprised. You have to remember that anyone can
sell on Amazon whether it's a responsible seller who cares about what they sell
or a few Chinese or other Asian renegades who produce a copy of something,
maybe even in the same factory where the authentic product is made. If you ever
go to any of the large markets in Vietname, Cambodia or Hong Kong you'd be
surprised how much "authentic" looking North Face clothing, Louis Vuitton,
Chanel or other designer stuff is sold.

Those are exactly what would have come with your iPhone as long as you in fact
ordered the lightning version and not the 3.5mm version.
But, having said this, I ordered a pair of these as well because they are
cheaper than from Apple, but while they were almost identical I can't swear
that they were and I am thinking they might be a knock-off. The ones I ordered
lasted all of 2 months whereas I usually get at least a year out of the
original Apple ones and I use them all the time, roll them over my hand and
stuff them in my pocket, I have gotten hooked on something with the cord and
all that. Just saying.

Bose headphones?

2020-02-10 Thread Shermeen Khan
Happy Monday all,

Is anyone using Bose over-the-ear or on-ear headphones? can you
comment on sound quality of music? I'd like to feel as though I'm
right there, conducting the orchestra or starring in the song I'm
listening to, if you know the feeling I'm after. Good bass is a must,
although not too obnoxious (you know when you're in a car, stopped at
a light, and the bass of the car next to you is rattling everything
within a kilometer range? that's not what I'm after).

And of course, if anyone has other recommendations, that would be
great. Note that I am not looking for anything that goes in the ear
itself.

Thank you!

Shermeen

Re: Thoughts on iPhone9?

2020-02-10 Thread Angie Nutt
I know at least one sighted person who prefers a phone like the SE because it
fits his trouser pockets. I don’t think he uses it particularly for media such
as Netflix etc. It depends on what a person wants, with some its the
convenience of carrying it. I prefer small for their cuteness but prefer larger
for accessing the keyboard so for me, larger is more practical.

All the best
Angie

Ok, many thanks for this, this is one I could and maybe would buy. Quite a
change since I was getting so disillusioned with fruit in general and Apples in
particular.
Don't know if Blackberry still exists but Apricot and Acorn have long
disappeared. Even Raspberry has gone quiet.
Not sure if the other lot are still into desserts.

So, SE++ would do it for me I reckon.

Thanks, RobH.

And you forgot 98SE, ME (Millenium
Edition which was between 98SE and XP and Vista which came between 7 and 8. Oh,
and there was of course also 8.1.

But of course that has little to do with the iPhone which nobody knows what
Apple will call it, SE 2 or 9 or something entirely different, but somehow I
actually think iPhone 9 is the least likely.
As far as the phone itself it will probably a winner just as the SE was, it
will have the same size and screen size as the iPhone 8 but with most likely
the latest A13 chip, but still with Touch Id and a camera system probably
better than that of the 8, maybe that of the XR. And it will of course be a
budget phone at least according to Apple standards.

Rob the other one to look at would be the 11 or if you need the home button,
Go an 8
Also one thing people might want to think of currently is the current state of
the corona virus in china,

It's causing companys like HP Dell and Apple to take a look at their
manufacturing plants in china

HP have got a factory in the major problem area of china which is causing a
production delay for asia / pacific stocks
Dell are keeping an eye on things and apple may have to delay configure to
order requests for devices in their notebook ranges.
These are warnings we've just been given at work re our purchasing of devices
for staff.

Hi Dennis,

Yeah I think to it’s a couple of years off being intro’d here in NZ,

I don’t need a new phone for at least this year
Having the 11 pro max should see me through till 2021 I hope,

Or if I can sell my x and my 11 I might get a new one this year.

Its just several years from being rolled out. Even than when it first comes
out there is probably going to be issues. If you want a new phone at an
affordable price grab the iPhone9. I will. I have android and iOS. I have
noticed some things are better on iPhone though especially if you use a
physical keyboard. Plus some apps will work better on one platform than
another.

I know some people are on plans which allow them to upgrade each year, but of

Edition which was between 98SE and XP and Vista which came between 7 and 8. Oh,
and there was of course also 8.1.

But of course that has little to do with the iPhone which nobody knows what
Apple will call it, SE 2 or 9 or something entirely
different, but somehow I actually think iPhone 9 is the least likely.
As far as the phone itself it will probably a winner just as the SE was, it
will have the same size and screen size as the iPhone 8
but with most likely the latest A13 chip, but still with Touch Id and a camera
system probably better than that of the 8, maybe that
of the XR. And it will of course be a budget phone at least according to Apple
standards.

Here is the difference, first number is the iPhone SE, second the iPhone 8 and
third is the difference:

Length: 123mm, 138mm, 15mm

Width: 58mm, 65mm, 7mm

That may not sound much, but it’s actually not so little, either, 15mm more in
length is just a touch less than five eight of an inch or a little more than
double the thickness of an iPhone 8

7mm more in width is a little over a quarter of an inch or about the thickness
of the iPhone 8 which is 7.3mm thick.

The SE weighs 113 grams whereas the iPhone 8 is 148 grams, a difference of 35
grams or just a bit more than 1 ounce.

Ok, many thanks for this, this is one I could and maybe would buy. Quite a
change since I was getting so disillusioned with fruit
in general and Apples in particular.
Don't know if Blackberry still exists but Apricot and Acorn have long
disappeared. Even Raspberry has gone quiet.
Not sure if the other lot are still into desserts.

So, SE++ would do it for me I reckon.

Thanks, RobH.
