Re: How to rewind an audible book

2020-04-07 Thread Robert Doc Wright

Double tap mini player

You should not need to double tap the percentage indicator just flick up or
down with one finger. if this still does not work flick right until you get to
the chapter button and choose the chapter you want to get back to.

  Hi all,

Can someone tell me how to rewind an audible book I’m currently listening to?
Are used to be able to double tap the percentage indicator and then flick up
and down to go forward and back, but now I can only go back using the jump back
button which only goes back something like 20 seconds at a time. Is this
something in the app that just isn’t working right now? Or is there something
I’m missing?

  Thanks for any help.

RE: How to rewind an audible book

2020-04-07 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
The double tapping on the book title/artwork in order to turn jump back and
forward in to chapter back and forward definitely does not work any more.
I just haven’t had time yet to write to Audible about this, in my opinion this
is definitely a step back in functionality.
A couple of updates back they mentioned something about Voiceover improvements,
but I haven’t seen any.

Another thing which is broken now for a while is that if you tap on Chapters
that Voiceover does not indicate which chapter you are on. At some point in the
past if, for example you were currently playing Chapter 9 and if you got to
Chapter 9 in the chapter list Voiceover would indicate this, can’t remember if
it said “selected” or “currently playing”. In any case, I found this very
useful in cases where I fell asleep and wanted to rewind several chapters, now
I always have to first look at what chapter I am on, much nicer if this is
indicated when you are in the chapter list. Hopefully some of you will also
write to Audible about these things.

Pig

You can play the bots on most, not all, of the games if you don't want to

There is an app called Premium Video Poker and the developer is: AppA11y,

There is another poker app called THETA Poker Pro-Texas Hold 'Em and that

There is also one called Ears Video Poker and the developer for that one is

Your suggestion of turning off the background app refresh is what prompted me
to turn mine off, but I'm not very sharp with iPhone / computer crap so I
thought I would see if I could find an article that shed a little more light on
the subject.

This article may very well have its pros & cons, but if you're not using all
these apps at the time, why the hell do they need to be running? LOL

I mean, like with a PC, if you aren't using Word, Excel, Chrome and whatever
the hell else programs that are just sitting there occupying open windows, you
close them don't you? So, I do the same with my iPhone. I figure the apps
will refresh when I need / open them.

Maybe that's why my iPhone & PC's very seldom have problems, I don't constantly
have apps / programs running in the background that I'm not using.

Thanks Mike for posting this.
As one who has often recommended turning off background app refresh, this gives
me something to think about.

One phrase in this article that makes me think he may be equating background
app refresh with leaving apps in the app switcher is when he said taking them
out of the multi-tasking window prevents them from doing their background
refreshing….

Well, I’ve seen too many cases where having a bunch of apps in the app switcher
has most definitely used up the resources and only until someone clears out
their app switcher does their phone go back to operating correctly.

This has been even on newer iPhone X’s and 11’s.
So I’m not yet convinced that Apple handles leaving things in the app switcher
very well.
I know they claim to, but I work with a lot of people with iPhones and my
experience says they can eat the resources and leave a phone sluggish and/or
down right useless until everything is cleared out.

If leaving them in the app switcher is the only way to have them refresh in the
background, I guess I will just not be taking advantage of this feature.

Thanks,
Richard

I often close open apps in my app switcher. I do like it to quickly
get to several apps if I'm using more then one app like listening to
music, then I decide to listen to a book. However, if I listen to the
book, I usually close the music app as well.

Your suggestion of turning off the background app refresh is what prompted
me to turn mine off, but I'm not very sharp with iPhone / computer crap so I
thought I would see if I could find an article that shed a little more light
on the subject.

This article may very well have its pros & cons, but if you're not using all
these apps at the time, why the hell do they need to be running? LOL

I mean, like with a PC, if you aren't using Word, Excel, Chrome and whatever
the hell else programs that are just sitting there occupying open windows,
you close them don't you? So, I do the same with my iPhone. I figure the
apps will refresh when I need / open them.

Maybe that's why my iPhone & PC's very seldom have problems, I don't
constantly have apps / programs running in the background that I'm not
using.

Take care. Mike. Sent from my iBarstool.

Background App Refresh.

…Apps can continue to run for a short period of time and are then set to a

They will instantly launch when you return to them. Certain tasks or services
can continue to run in the background. To lessen the effect on battery life,
normal app background refreshing is scheduled for efficient times, such as when

For example, an app can check if new content is available and download the
updates, or retrieve the updated content in the background when it receives
a push notification, so the new content is ready for viewing when you launch

If you force an app to quit by dragging it up from the multitasking display, it
won’t be able to do its background activities, such as tracking location or
responding to VoIP calls,
until you relaunch the app. iOS learns patterns based on your use of the device
and tries to predict when an app should be updated in the background. It
also learns when the device is typically inactive, such as during the night, to
reduce update frequency when the device is not in use.

To summarize Apple’s definition, Background App Refresh adds a layer of
intelligence and efficiency to the way your apps act when you are not using
them. It allows apps to
temporarily open in the background, receive an update, and then freeze again so
it cannot use system resources or drain your battery. The cool thing is
that it will plan these little update pow-wows around times you are already

After using Voice Dream Scanner, I’m personally not that interested in such an

If someone did a side by side comparison, that would be interesting.
Voice Dream Scanner does all the recognition on the device too, so no internet

Re: Has anyone tried this app?

2020-04-07 Thread Kerry Macdonald

Hello, I have this app and it is great and so is the voice dream reader. I have
a question that I was wondering if anyone had the answer to though. When I am
in the app and I have Scan anywhere between 5 to 10 pages the app keeps
crashing and kicking me out of the app. I have uninstalled it closed and opened
it and then all the usual things to help with this type of issue. Does anybody
else have this issue or have any suggestions?

chatty, and either to fast or way to slow. I want to use my iPhone as a

Hope someone can help.

Background App Refresh, Explained In Lamen's Terms

2020-04-07 Thread Mike B.
Hi All,

I was curious about how background app refresh works and below is an article
I found that explains it well. I thought others might have the same query,
so here
 you go.

https://connectitcompany.com/background-app-refresh-explained-in-laymans-terms/

Background App Refresh Explained in Layman’s Terms

 by CJ Phillips, Mar 28, 2019 |
iOS Background App Refresh Explained in Layman’s Terms

Background App Refresh allows your apps to check for new information in the
background in an intelligent and controlled manner. Because of Background
App
Refresh, apps do not get a blank check to run in the background, but instead
are only able to refresh at certain times, locations, and battery levels.

I absolutely hate blogs that tell people to disable Background App Refresh.
Most of these “How to Fix Battery Drain” articles are designed to get clicks
and are not very concerned with accuracy. Well I’m here to set the record
straight about Background App Refresh. I happened to have written an article
about how to fix iPhone battery drain that has received over 2 million+ hits
in the last two years.

Background App Refresh does not give any app a blank check to run whenever
it wants. It actually adds a layer of _intelligence _to the way your phone
handles apps in
the background. I believe that in some cases, it could actually increase
energy efficiency of your iOS device. To get a better understanding of what
Background
App Refresh adds to the iOS experience, here is Apple’s own definition of
Background App Refresh.

…Apps can continue to run for a short period of time and are then set to a
suspended state so they are not actively in use, open, or taking up system
resources.
They will instantly launch when you return to them. Certain tasks or
services can continue to run in the background. To lessen the effect on
battery life,
normal app background refreshing is scheduled for efficient times, such as
when your device is connected to Wi-Fi, plugged into a power source, or
being
actively used. When Background App Refresh is on, apps that take advantage
of this feature can refresh themselves in the background.

For example, an app can check if new content is available and download the
updates, or retrieve the updated content in the background when it receives
a push notification, so the new content is ready for viewing when you launch
the app. Apps can also schedule background refreshing based on your
location.
If you force an app to quit by dragging it up from the multitasking display,
it won’t be able to do its background activities, such as tracking location
or responding to VoIP calls,
until you relaunch the app. iOS learns patterns based on your use of the
device and tries to predict when an app should be updated in the background.
It
also learns when the device is typically inactive, such as during the night,
to reduce update frequency when the device is not in use.

To summarize Apple’s definition, Background App Refresh adds a layer of
intelligence and efficiency to the way your apps act when you are not using
them. It allows apps to
temporarily open in the background, receive an update, and then freeze again
so it cannot use system resources or drain your battery. The cool thing is
that it will plan these little update pow-wows around times you are already
using your device, in good Wi-Fi, or in a location you normally check those
apps, which can make your iOS experience much smoother. Instead of opening
an app you use constantly and waiting for a few seconds for it to update,
you
open the app and it’s already ready for your eyes to feast upon. Now you
have to answer two questions when enabling or disabling Background App
Refresh:

list of 2 items
1. Do I check this app enough/is it critical for me to have this app
up-to-date?
2. (optional) Do I trust the developer of this app to implement it correctly
and not abuse it?
list end

Question 1 is pretty straightforward. Do you absolutely need or want an app
to always stay refreshed with current information? If you answer yes, then
enable Background App Refresh for that app. Question 2 is a little harder to
determine unless you follow the current tech blogs and trends. If you have
absolutely no idea
how to answer question 2, forget about it. Stick with the first question.
For me, question 2 eliminated any Facebook and Google-related app I have
installed on my phone.

I simply do not trust Facebook or Google to have my best interest in mind
because I am not their customer. Both companies see me as a set of
 “eyeballs”
to show me ads, and because our interests don’t align, I’m disabling BAR for
any app written by them. Simple as that.

A good example of an app that meets both criterion is
the best Twitter app for iOS, Tweetbot.
I trust the developers at Tapbots,
Paul Haddad
 and
Mark Jardine,
because of their track record of making fantastic apps, and I check it often
enough that I would like for it to be

hi,

I'm using hte latest update of the ap and when on the player screen I can
still put focus on the percentage of the chapter and flick up/down to ajust
tht value. The one I cant get to work again is where you could double tap
on the title or immage and it'd toggle forward/back from your setting to
chapter forward/back so now I just use the chapter button. on the play
screen. You btw can change your foward/back options from time incriments.
if ou goto more on the player screen and fin the optionthat says player
settings you can change forward/back intervils.

Re the mini player, the full one is still available: if you flick left
from the play button (twice I think) it will say mini player. Tap on
there and the full player opens. That it reverts to the mini player
without rhyme or reason is very irritating!

Re: How to rewind an audible book

2020-04-07 Thread Matthew Bullis
The issue I find is that the player is no longer a tab at the bottom, but there
is a button called miniplayer, which is similar to how this works in the Apple
Music app. Now in Audible when you tap on a title, it begins to play and the
screen doesn't really change, and will not open up to the big player screen
like before. There's a lot of content on the screen, so tap with four fingers
to get to the last element, then flick backwards until you get the miniplayer
button. Once that's opened, it will feel familiar. Perhaps Audible can have a
setting in a future update that causes the player to open when you tap on a
book, as before. For now, this is how you get to the player controls.

Re: Question for iPad Pro users

2020-04-07 Thread 'Harry Bell' via VIPhone
I have the new 11 inch iPad Pro, which really doesn’t feel so very different
from my previous 10.2 inch iPad, whereas my wife’s old 12,9 inch model feels
huge and hard to use on my lap and less easy to fit into my small rucksack. I
just got a cheap magnetic cover from Amazon and I pair it with my Orbit reader
20 and with my Magic Mouse (as it can now be set to speak what is under the
pointer and the pointer can be set to move voiceover focus). Works well for me!

Re: Rebooting A Phone With No Home Button?

2020-04-07 Thread Wayne Merritt
I've had the best success when pressing the volume up button, then
volume down, and then holding the power for a few seconds. It usually
takes a couple of seconds and then I get a power off button. As
mentioned earlier, if you want a hard reboot, hold the power button
for 10 to 15 seconds and then release. It will take a little bit
longer, but VoiceOver will come back. I'm doing this on an iPhone XR.

Be well,
Wayne

Hello Robin,

I have the 9” iPad Pro from 2018, and purchased the Apple keyboard case they

the keyboard it stays in Land scape mode. My work purpose is a Project

Hi,

I was just wondering from those who have iPad Pro 2018 or are getting 2020
which size you chose and why? Which case if any do you use with yours and do
you prefer to use it in portrait landscape locked in or let it switch depending
on your desire at any given time?

Thanks for indulging my curiosity.

Take good care.

Re: accessible games

2020-04-07 Thread Wayne Merritt
I did a search on AppleVis for Bible trivia and got the following results.
Bible Trivia Quiz (free):
https://www.applevis.com/apps/ios/education/bible-trivia-quiz-no-ads-bible-study
The other result was a game from 2013 and the page was not working.
Honestly, the quiz entry was from 2017 and looked pretty good. I
haven't played the game but give it a shot. The free was a notation of
the price, not part of the name.

Be well,
Wayne

I've got the iPhone 11 because my 8 broke open. I was looking to reboot my
phone, and while the button on the right does allot of stuff, I couldn't make
it shut down to reboot it. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Re: Rebooting A Phone With No Home Button?

2020-04-07 Thread Diane Giannetti
With the volume down in the volume up and then hitting the power button, that
will do a hard reboot. Without a hard reboot is that however, if you just want
to shut it down normally just do the volume down and power button and hold that
until you hear it say either emergency or whatever it’s gonna say and then you
bring it back to where it says Power off and double tap on that and it will be
off.

RE: The iPhone Special Edition 2020 or whatever it wil be called from apple Insider

2020-04-07 Thread Simon A Fogarty
What you mean like the comment tim cook makes everytime they release a new
phone?

It's the best iPhone we've ever seen!

No kidding, I can't see them putting out a lower grade phone because they
didn't want to spend the money on R for the biggest and best,
So they thought they'd put out a 3 inch flip phone running ms dos 2

But yeah every new device needs to be taken with a grain of salt because they
may be great on the day of release but really they are only faster for 12
months at least then there is a new device.

Mean while the device you get to day should last another 4 years if you just go
with it.

It absolutely is a faster CPU, but what I am saying that I have had iPhones for
a long time and when Apple praises how fast the new chips are and they give
numbers like "twice as fast" or that apps open "40% faster" that is not really
all that much in real life and what people do with their phones. I know that
every time I upgrade and most recently that was from my 6S to an 8 I was
thinking "Oh, it's nice, but it's not all that much different".
As for being more future proof, yes, of course a phone which is 2 years ahead
will probably get a couple more iOS versions, but again, most phones nowadays
get at least 4 after they are released which means if it stops after that you
can have a phone for 5 years. The 6S, for example, came out in 2015 with the A9
chip and iOS 9. The SE has the same chip but was released half a year later in
April of 2017. Both still have support for iOS 13 so they got iOS 10, 11, 12
and now 13 and I guess we'll find out in June whether they still get iOS 14.
Not too many people I know keep their phone for 5 years so in many cases
upgrading after a year or 2 with the reasoning that you get more iOS updates
isn't a very good reason because chances are you would upgrade after 3 or 4
years anyways.
I'm just making the point that nowadays these phones are mature devices, they
are not new and experiencing major upgrades every year or two where you might
say I really need one now. I still think if somebody has an iPhone 8 it's a
waste of money to upgrade now, better wait a year or two and then get a new
phone with 5G support because the new SE will most certainly not have it so why
not get a new phone say in 2021, by then 5G will be well on its way to becoming
available and if you upgrade now to a new SE chances are you justify another
upgrade a year and a half from now because you want 5G support. In fact, once
5G is widely available it will be the biggest game changer which we have seen
in a long time.

I'm just glad to know that it is coming out, and will still have a home button.
I will probably get it in the 256 gig model. Even though I just got my iPhone
8 last year, should I ditch my iPhone 8 for this new iPhone?

Man,
You guys are lucky to have coffee,

We've got nothing trading except online stores and they don't include cafes

I'm dealing with pod coffees but it's just not the same.

It is the same as always for me.
Select a photo by double tapping on it..
Flick right until you here photo chooser and the share button is the next flick
to the right.
After share is favorite, and delete.

This is also on an 8 plus running iOS 13.4.

How do you share photos from the i phone with ios 13.4? I have an i phone 8
plus and can’t figure this out. I used to be able to bring up the share sheet
from within the photos app but this option has seemingly gone away.

Thanks,
Caitlyn

That is correct, it is also not possible to set a timer for a sighted person
when in video mode since the assumption is nobody would want to use a timer for
video where you usually would want to be able to move the phone around to

Well, on the 8 plus, the timer goes away when switching to video mode.

At least, the word timer off disappears and it just says 0 seconds and is not
adjustable.

So, my guess is it isn’t available for videos.

You may want to call Apple to confirm that.

Thanks for any help
