RE: Getting a Recent caller into Contacts.

2020-04-23 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
If I start out from the Recent Call list, I don't get first an option to Add
Contact where then I have to pick add new or add to existing.
After I swipe down to "More Info", I usually touch the bottom left of the
screen where I find the "Favourites" tab, then I swipe left from there and I
have the following options (this is going backwards i.e. swiping left):

Block this caller
Share my location
Add to emergency contacts
Add to existing contact
Create new contact
Share contact

Obviously if the number is not in my contacts I will double tap on Create new
contact and I can then fill in first name, last name, company and any other
fields I want and save it.

I had two calls today that I tried to put in Contacts.

I flicked down and got More Information, then flicked left to add to Contacts.
When I doubletapped, I got Contacts, Section Index and Contact list, but no
place to add. I just had to do from scratch, go back to recents, and it gave
the caller name, so I would know I had it in correct.

RE: Some important queries re setting up a new IPhone SE from scratch - all help appreciated

2020-04-23 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
The most important thing with the SIM is to make sure you don't turn it around
or flip it over after taking it out of your old phone. The Nano SIM cards are
so tiny that it's somewhat difficult to feel which side is up and which side
goes into the phone first. In other words, don't drop it. I find it easiest to
sit at a table or desk, put down the new phone after you take it out of the box
and remove the screen protectors and pop out the SIM tray. Then take your old
phone, pop out the SIM tray and pull it out completely, carefully take the SIM
card and put it on the tray of the new phone and slide it in.
I would be prepared to call Be my Eyes or Aira with your old phone, as long as
you are connected to your WiFi you can easily do this even with the SIM
removed, just in case you need help to figure out how to put in the SIM card.
Of course if you had a family member there to do it or help that would be best
if you can't ask or don't want to ask another sighted person to do it.

Richard,

Maybe you could summarize your experience after you get your SE 2020 up and
working.

When it comes to SIM removal, extra care is the order of the day whether using
a push pin, a unfolded paper clip, or a SIM removal tool. They all have pretty
sharp points and the key is to ensure that point gets in the SIM tray hole with
utmost care in order to avoid scratching the device.

As far as I know, your instructions Alan are correct.
A couple points though, I would never use something with a sharp point to
remove the tray. Just in case. Call me paranoid, but if you slip and push too
hard, you could do damage. A standard small paper clip end works great if the
sim removal tool is not in the box.
Yes, triple tapping the home button when you power it on will start VoiceOver.
The one risk in setting up from a backup is that if there are any lingering
problems, they will be inherited.
I'm debating whether to set it up as a new device, then sync with my computer.
The advantage to using an encrypted backup is that more settings like passwords
are supposed to be included along with email account details.
I may even just call Apple Accessibility and have them help walk me through it.
Though I'm just stubborn enough to go ahead on my own.
But, I would set it up via wifi first, then put in the sim I think.
I'll be calling my carrier to double check.

After you get a call I want to find more info double tap on that and then keep
working until you find create new contact. That is if you want to add that
phone number as a new contact if you want to add a phone number to an existing
contact you go to more info and find add to existing contact.

any issues with the new Fantastical. I chose not to subscribe, because it would

Compared: Magic Keyboard versus Smart Keyboard Folio, Apple Insider

2020-04-23 Thread M. Taylor
Compared: Magic Keyboard versus Smart Keyboard Folio
By: Andrew O'Hara
Apple Insider
Thursday, April 23, 2020

Apple now sells two choices for iPad Pro keyboards. AppleInsider compares
the Smart Keyboard Folio to the new Magic Keyboard to see how they stack up
and which one is worth it for the price.

As it stands, iPad Pro users have two official options when it comes to
Apple-branded keyboard cases. Users could use any of Apple's Bluetooth
keyboards, but the Magic Keyboard and the Smart Keyboard Folio are the only
two available just for iPad.

Each of these supports the same models. There is both a Magic Keyboard as
well as a Smart Keyboard Folio for both the 12.9-inch and 11-inch iPad Pros
from 2018 and 2020.

On the surface, it appears the primary differentiator is the inclusion or
lack of a trackpad. But actual differences go far beyond that with a huge
array of functional, design, and cost differences.

Smart Keyboard Folio
Apple's Smart Keyboard has been around for several years now. Debuting with
the original 2015 iPad Pro before being redesigned as the Smart Keyboard
Folio in 2018 with the redesigned iPad Pros. The redesign wasn't
well-received and for the past year and a half users have been exploring
other options.

But the Smart Keyboard Folio isn't without its merits. Between the two, the
Smart Keyboard Folio is far lighter than the Magic Keyboard, lending itself
better to travel when you want to keep your weight down as much as possible.

The Smart Keyboard Folio also has the benefit of being almost entirely
water-resistant. Apple makes these keyboards from a woven fabric that is
stiffened around the keycaps. Because of this, no liquid is capable of
getting into the keyboard itself, and the same goes for dust or other small
debris.

There are two viewing angles on the Smart Keyboard Folio, a more vertical
one for watch media and a more inclined angle for productivity. It connects
via the Smart Connector and has minimal draw on your iPad's battery life.

Magic Keyboard
Apple's Magic Keyboard has much more going for it. It too uses the Smart
Connector but has a full scissor-switch mechanism-based keyboard and a glass
trackpad. This does eat up a bit more battery life, but not by all that
much.

Using a scissor-switch mechanism for the keyboard is a big change. It isn't
water-resistant like the Smart Keyboard Folio, but it is far more responsive
for typing. The fabric keys have a "click" to them but it is very soft and
can even become "stuck" even when they aren't being pressed.

Magic Keyboard is also backlit. It adjusts automatically based on the
ambient lighting in the room but can be manually adjusted from settings.

Overall, the Magic Keyboard is far nicer and more reliable.

Magic Keyboard arrow keys versus Smart Keyboard Folio
One small, but critical detail, is the arrow keys. On the Smart Keyboard
Folio, Apple has a compact design to the arrow keys but are a bit harder to
identify. Apple reverted back to the inverted "T" design with the 16-inch
MacBook Pro and they changed it on the Magic Keyboard for iPad Pro as well.

By choosing the Magic Keyboard, you are also adding a second USB-C port to
your iPad Pro as well. This is great for charging the iPad and leaving the
port on the side of the tablet free for other accessories.

While the Magic Keyboard is heftier, it is due to metal plates within the
keyboard itself. This makes it much more rigid and easier to move about. If
you pick up the Smart Keyboard Folio by just they keyboard, it bends and
warps while the Magic Keyboard stays firm.

Trackpad support on the iPad Pro through the Magic Keyboard
Trackpads are newly supported within iPadOS as part of the 13.4 update. It
makes a huge difference if dealing with editing text, spreadsheets, and even
video work. You can always use an external Bluetooth mouse, but having it
integrated right into the trackpad it is much more convenient.

Key features of the Smart Keyboard Folion versus the Magic Keyboard
Magic Keyboard, Smart Keyboard Folio.
Connectivity
Smart Connector, Smart Connector.
Key Type:
Scissor switch mechanism, Woven fabric.
Function Keys:
None, None.
Backlit:
Yes, No.
Arrow Keys:
Inverted "T" design, Block design.
TrackPad:
Yes, N/A.

Should you buy the Smart Keyboard Folio or Magic Keyboard?
The decision between the two is mainly down to if you need the trackpad or
if you want to spend the lofty price Apple asks for the Magic Keyboard. If
you don't want to spend the money, the Smart Keyboard Folio is a great,
durable keyboard that uses the Smart Connector and offers up some
protection.

But if you want the best of the best, you will have to shell out for the
Magic Keyboard. The keys are better, more durable, backlit, and the entire
body is more stable. You are also buying an additional USB-C port to the
iPad Pro and a fully articulated hinge -not to mention the trackpad. But you
will pay for the privilege.

I just did that moments ago

After you double tap on Add to contacts, there are options for create new
contact, or add to existing contact.
You need to pick one of those before moving on.

2020-04-23 Thread Wayne Merritt
I have been using the new Fantastical since the update and have
noticed a lot of fixes for the issues brought up here. I did not
experience the problems others reported, or did not think they were
huge issues for me. I have not had any issues with the new
Fantastical. I chose not to subscribe, because it would be another
monthly charge. I would be interested to know of other benefits from
the premium which Jenn or others find useful.

Be well,
Wayne Merritt

RE: Wifi Assist , a tip that might be helpful

2020-04-23 Thread Richard Turner
WiFi assist does not impact your use of cellular at all.
What it does is it switches to cellular if your WiFi signal is weak.
So, if you have unlimited cellular data, it may not impact you; but if you are
like a lot of us and have limited data, you want to turn that setting off so
you don't burn up your cell data thinking you are on WiFi.

How does this setting affect your ability to use cellular when you are out with
no wifi connection? Would it prevent you from having the ability to connect?

Go to settings / notifications / mail. In there you will find each of your
email accounts. When you double tap on each one, you will find a sound setting
for each one.

Hope this helps.

RE: New SE iPhone Keyboard

2020-04-23 Thread Richard Turner
Well, Mike, I’d call Apple Accessibility and have them do a screen share.
I just unlocked my orientation again, opened messages, started a new message,
turned the phone to landscape and the keyboard stretch across the screen
completely.

Something isn’t right. Again, this is with iOS 13.4.1.

I was in Email when I tested it and I’m running iOS 13.4.1, so that may be the

Of course, there seems to always be some app outliers that don’t widen when
landscaped.
Not sure why that is.

Mike,
I just unlocked orientation on my old SE, and the keyboard widen in landscape
just like all iPhones.
I usually keep the orientation locked, but after testing, I think you had
misinformation.
I should be able to confirm on the new SE after it arrives tomorrow.

Then, get down to mail and double tap.
In here, you will find all of your mail accounts and you can set a different

And, no, there is no save button.
When you hear the sound played when you select it, just go back a level and the
sound is saved.

2020-04-23 Thread Stacy Fuehrer
To my knowledge, once you tap the sound, you choose, simply close settings.
It automatically saves what you have selected. Someone can correct me if I am
wrong.
Hope this helps

Hi Ann,

Go into the first item in SEttings, which has your name on it, and then go into
iCloud. You can see there which services are on, if any. If that doesn't help,
i would suggest contacting Apple Accessibility.

Best,

Fantastical

2020-04-23 Thread Jeff Samco
A couple months or more ago it was reported that a major upgrade of
the Fantastical calendar app caused some difficulty in how events

since then. However, has the developer since corrected this so the
app basically works as before?

Thanks for any input.

In the setting under cellular is a wifi assist option.
When on the phone will select the strongest signal wifi or cell.

This means if you have a data plan your phone will use data even when wifi is

In my case my phone would change to Cell and stay there for extended times. I

If you have unlimited data all good and use the option but, I’m on a shared

RE: Some important queries re setting up a new IPhone SE from scratch - all help appreciated

2020-04-23 Thread Alan Lemly

Re: Some important queries re setting up a new IPhone SE from scratch - all help appreciated

2020-04-23 Thread Arlene
Alan, those instructions sound helpful and good. While I haven't set up any
of our se phones when new, and put sim cards in the phones, Wayne's done
that . He does really well with putting the sim card in the phone and I'm
glad he can do that well, since just the thought of it makes me nervous.
From listening to him setting up the phones and when he told me how he
handles putting the sim card in, your instructions are very clear, and
Wayne said you explained very well how to do it. and the Turtles are one of
my most favorite groups, and I think Eleanor is swell too. I don't know if
I'll ever switch or put in a new sim card, as I said just the thought of it
makes me nervous, but the most important thing to do, while you're doing the
inserting of the sim card, just make sure to do it over something, just in
case it falls, this way if you're doing it over a box or table you'll be
able to find it. I think I'll have Wayne show me how to do it, it would
probably be a good thing to get use to doing for when I might need too.

Eleanor,

I'll be going through the same steps since I just ordered a new SE 2020 and
will be transferring the SIM card from my iPhone 8 to my new SE. I've never
transferred a SIM before but I'll do my best to answer some of your
questions.

My understanding is that when you power on your new iPhone, you should be
able to press the home button three times to activate Voiceover. But see
below for other steps you need to do before this.

I would strongly recommend that you backup your iPhone 8 before doing
anything else with your new iPhone. Whether it's better to do this over the
air or to a local computer has changed over the past few years in my
opinion. In the past, more things were backed up to a local encrypted iTunes
backup than to iCloud but I'm not sure that is still the case. Since your
Mac is not available, you should definitely do an iCloud backup before
setting up your new SE. To do so:

1. From your iPhone 8, open Settings, and at the top of the list,
double tap on your name, Apple ID, iCloud, iTunes and App Store.

2. Swipe to iCloud and double tap.

3. Under the heading Apps using iCloud, swipe to iCloud backup and
double tap.

4. Make sure iCloud backup is turned on which will be the first in the
list on the screen that opens. Swipe again to the Backup now button and
double tap to initiate a current iCloud backup. Give the process a few
minutes to complete and you will be given the current time of the latest
backup when it's done.

I will be following the above steps as well but will also do an encrypted
iTunes backup on my Windows 7 computer because I really don't believe you
can have too many backups.

I've never transferred a SIM card myself because my previous new iPhones
came with SIM cards. However, since I've switched to a Verizon prepaid plan
recently, my SE 2020 will not have a SIM card. In portrait mode with your
iPhone 8's power button near the top right edge, the SIM release hole will
be in the very middle of that right edge below the power button. You will
need a SIM card removal tool or a push pin or an unfolded paper clip to have
something to insert slowly into the SIM removal hole in order to release its
tray. I personally think a push pin like I used to use on a cork bulletin
board works the best because it is easier to hold onto and apply any needed
pressure. If you have such a thing, I would recommend doing the SIM removal
over a tray with raised edges to provide something to catch the SIM to be
removed should it decide to leap out. This is really all the practical
advice I can give since I've never replaced a SIM myself. My understanding
is that they only go in one way and I believe one of their corners may be
notched to provide for this one way only insertion but I expect others will
be able to offer much more detailed advice.

Since I only set up new iPhones every couple of years, I don't remember
exactly what Voiceover will say when setting up your new SE but I believe it
offers you the choice of setting it up as a new device or from restoring a
backup. I always restore from a backup. Also, I'm not sure when the best
time is for you to transfer your SIM from your iPhone 8 to your new SE. My
cautionary side tells me to do this after the new phone is set up so you'll
have a device that works until you're ready to make the new one a workable
cell phone. I would think all your apps and settings should download from
the cloud just fine and the new SE would work like a WiFi only device until
you transfer the SIM to it but others more experienced than I will have to
comment on this.

I hope the above will be somewhat helpful. Finally, my apologies

I was in Email when I tested it and I’m running iOS 13.4.1, so that may be
the difference.

Of course, there seems to always be some app outliers that don’t widen when
landscaped.

Not sure why that is.

Mike,

I just unlocked orientation on my old SE, and the keyboard widen in
landscape just like all iPhones.

I usually keep the orientation locked, but after testing, I think you had
misinformation.

I should be able to confirm on the new SE after it arrives tomorrow.

Re: Some important queries re setting up a new IPhone SE from scratch - all help appreciated

2020-04-23 Thread Richard Turner

11 to 12 inches works best for whole page scans.
The rule of thumb is to have the camera as far from an object as that object is

RE: Some important queries re setting up a new IPhone SE from scratch - all help appreciated

2020-04-23 Thread Alan Lemly
Eleanor,

I'll be going through the same steps since I just ordered a new SE 2020 and
will be transferring the SIM card from my iPhone 8 to my new SE. I've never
transferred a SIM before but I'll do my best to answer some of your questions.

My understanding is that when you power on your new iPhone, you should be able
to press the home button three times to activate Voiceover. But see below for
other steps you need to do before this.

I would strongly recommend that you backup your iPhone 8 before doing anything
else with your new iPhone. Whether it's better to do this over the air or to a
local computer has changed over the past few years in my opinion. In the past,
more things were backed up to a local encrypted iTunes backup than to iCloud
but I'm not sure that is still the case. Since your Mac is not available, you
should definitely do an iCloud backup before setting up your new SE. To do so:

1. From your iPhone 8, open Settings, and at the top of the list, double
tap on your name, Apple ID, iCloud, iTunes and App Store.

2. Swipe to iCloud and double tap.

3. Under the heading Apps using iCloud, swipe to iCloud backup and double
tap.

4. Make sure iCloud backup is turned on which will be the first in the
list on the screen that opens. Swipe again to the Backup now button and double
tap to initiate a current iCloud backup. Give the process a few minutes to
complete and you will be given the current time of the latest backup when it's
done.

I will be following the above steps as well but will also do an encrypted
iTunes backup on my Windows 7 computer because I really don't believe you can
have too many backups.

I've never transferred a SIM card myself because my previous new iPhones came
with SIM cards. However, since I've switched to a Verizon prepaid plan

I hope the above will be somewhat helpful. Finally, my apologies to you, the

you're swell. I'm a fan of 60's music.

Subject: Some important queries re setting up a new IPhone SE from scratch -
all help appreciated

Hi all

After any advice/help from people on this list with this situation. Ive
ordered a new IPhone SE, and have just had confirmation of its despatch. So
have some questions re setting it up which Im hoping people might be able to
assist with.

Firstly, I know this sounds somewhat daft, but if anyone could e-mail me some
idiot-proof instructions on how to set it up from scratch, including on how to
get Voiceover started from the word go Id be really grateful please?. Im far
more nervous about doing it than normal, probably because I know all the shops
are closed, and sighted friends who would normally be able to assist me cant
do so at the moment due to the lockdown. So any step-by-step guide much
appreciated.

Secondly, is it better to set the phone up over the air?, or is it better to
set it up through my

height of scan stand for iPhone

2020-04-23 Thread Fanus Buys
Hello list
I want to make my own stand but the only measurement I am not sure of is the
proper height above the page. What is the height to get the most accurate
result with an app like Seeing AI or VoiceDreamScanner?

It has been. At some point, Apple will probably eliminate the lightening
connector and some years after that such 'phones will likely become less
easy to locate.

... I’m also hoping. I also like Bluetooth, but I seem to misplace
them. In fact, I’m on the hunt for a Bluetooth earpiece I took off during
a phone call last week and I still cannot find where I set it! Ergh!
...

I think you are really speaking of earbuds, that is small in-ear
transducers (fancy word for device which turns electricity into sound, or
vice versa), Bluetooth external "cans" (headphones with large cushions
outside the ear) are also pretty common (less common, these days, are
external units which convert traditional 3.5 mm (or 1/2") to bluetooth). If
you often find losing earbuds is an issue, you might consider something
like TrelabZ2

Hi all,
I operate on a XR and am facing the following issues on whatsapp.
1. While selecting the chats for forwarding messages, Voice over
doesn't read the names of groups properly, for instance, for a group
name 'LISTED 2020', it only reads 2020.
2. While browsing the chats, it doesn't read the name of business
acounts: it only reads after opening that chat.
Eagerly await solutions.
Thanking you

it has the lightning headphone jack just like the phones since the 7.
So, no 3.5 MM jack.
Hence the discussion about getting the dongle to use headphones that have
the 3.5 mm plug.
Though I am sure the new phone comes with the lightning plug headphones.

RE: New SE iPhone Keyboard

2020-04-23 Thread Richard Turner
I was in Email when I tested it and I’m running iOS 13.4.1, so that may be the
difference.
Of course, there seems to always be some app outliers that don’t widen when
landscaped.
Not sure why that is.

Some important queries re setting up a new IPhone SE from scratch - all help appreciated

2020-04-23 Thread 'Eleanor Roberts' via VIPhone
Hi all

After any advice/help from people on this list with this situation. I’ve
ordered a new IPhone SE, and have just had confirmation of its despatch. So
have some questions re setting it up which I’m hoping people might be able to
assist with.

Firstly, I know this sounds somewhat daft, but if anyone could e-mail me some
idiot-proof instructions on how to set it up from scratch, including on how to
get Voiceover started from the word go I’d be really grateful please?. I’m far
more nervous about doing it than normal, probably because I know all the shops
are closed, and sighted friends who would normally be able to assist me can’t
do so at the moment due to the lockdown. So any step-by-step guide much
appreciated.

Secondly, is it better to set the phone up over the air?, or is it better to
set it up through my Mac? I ask this because my Mac is currently away being
fixed/serviced. So I just wondered whether it would make any difference which
way I did it?, and if so whether I should wait for my Mac to return before
attempting set-up?

Finally, can anyone send me some step-by-step idiots instructions on how to
swap my SIM card over from my currrent IPhone 8 to the new SE?? I’ve never done
this before, and again, in normal times I’d happily get sighted help with this,
but obviously I can’t do that right now. So any help appreciated.

My apologies for all the questions, but I really don’t want to make a mess of
this/muck it up completely/ruin the new phone/etc. So many thanks in advance
for any help/advice that anyone can give me.

Eleanor

I did get a great deal and no problem with the size of it. The new phones
have the screen going all the way to the edges of the screen, so, as someone
said earlier don't require as much "real estate." My guess is, with it in
its case that it is about6 1/2 x 3 1/2. It is the same thickness as my SE;
it is heavier, but I'm use to it now.
