Re: Lost speech with voiceover on

2020-05-08 Thread Dave
Have you tried a 2 finger swipe down, to get Voiceover to read the screen. Then
pressing the volume up button.

Sometimes, Voice over can get knocked down to zero, which doesn’t affect siri
speech.

Dave.

When working with apps I have no speech on my SE2020. I can engage Siri, and
he will answer questions, make calls. When I ask him to open an app such as
messages, speech stops. I suppose messages is open, but I can’t interact with
it. I have tried three-finger doubletap in case I turned off speech, but that
isn’t it.

Is there a way to reset this beautiful bugger? I’m totally stimied.

Thanks,

Ann

RE: How to answer call, while on a call.

2020-05-08 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
As long as your first caller doesn't hang up it will switch between calls. But
keep in mind that after you speak to the second caller and want to switch back
you also have to be quick because if the second caller already hung up and you
then press the middle button it may hang up the first call.

Hi Sieghard,

I'm using my wired Apple Earpods all the time and want to make sure I
understand what you're saying. If you receive a new call while talking on
another call, are you saying pressing the remote middle button on the Earpods
will answer the new call? I would have thought it would disconnect the existing
call. Can you please confirm this so I don't hang up on anyone?

Thanks.

Re: Siri won’t launch apps

2020-05-08 Thread Richard Turner
Mary, You probably have already done all this, but have you cleared out the app
switcher, cleared the RAM by holding down the power until it says power off,
releasing the power button, then holding in the home button until it comes back
talking?
This sounds like either a resource issue or a network issue, but if the XR is
working correctly, I'm betting on the resource issue.

Re: Lost speech with voiceover on

2020-05-08 Thread Mike B.
Howdy,

Just wanted to make a slight correction, you said you did a, 3 finger triple
tap, to turn speech on / off, well a 3 finger triple tap turns the screen
curtain on / off. A 2 finger triple tap turns speech on / off.

Take care. Mike. Sent from my iBarstool.

Subject: Lost speech with voiceover on

When working with apps I have no speech on my SE2020. I can engage Siri,
and he will answer questions, make calls. When I ask him to open an app
such as messages, speech stops. I suppose messages is open, but I can’t
interact with it. I have tried three-finger doubletap in case I turned off
speech, but that isn’t it.

Is there a way to reset this beautiful bugger? I’m totally stimied.

Thanks,

Ann

An experience you don't want and some of you had

2020-05-08 Thread Anne West
Hello on this rain/snow night. Yup! I said snow!

This past Wednesday evening, I was in an app I haven't used for a long time
and decided to check out new stuff in it. While there, a notification came
into my iPhone 8 telling me there was something wrong with the app and
somehow the connection was with Facebook. That connection trashed app. I
quickly closed the app in trouble and totally lost Voice Over. I'm totally
blind so was dead in the water until my sighted friend, Hope stopped by
yesterday.

Hope spent a lot of time trouble shooting. There were lights on the screen
telling her Voice Over was on but Samantha didn't say a word. We gave up.
Hope came back this morning and we Called Apple.

The advisor walked Hope through several trouble shooting ideas with no
success. The end result? A reset of the settings which brought back
Samantha. Nice to see you again I said! The Apple Advisor, Kristen, told me
some apps might not work correctly and told me to call if I have trouble.
Weather Gods is my first casualty. Notifications are not coming in and
settings are dimmed. The app is not showing in the list of apps to enable
notifications. So everyone, hope you don't encounter a corruption like I
did. The offending app is gone. Will I redownload that app? Maybe but I
didn't use it much.

Have a nice weekend.

Anne

I'm hoping someone has experience with this app.

When I first started using it, the wifi transfer was so easy. However they
changed something awhile back, and I can't figure out how to do the
transfer. I managed to email myself a couple of recordings. But I have one
that is too large to email.

Here are the steps I followed:
1. Tapped the wifi transfer button on my phone:
2. Entered the wifi address into the browser on my laptop, which
brought up the file list from my phone.
This is where my problem began. There used to be a download button below
each item. It is no longer there. I can't figure out how to proceed from
there.

The solution must be very simple, but I can't figure it out. Any help would
be much appreciated.

Thanks.

RE: Anker wired fast charging option for iPhone

2020-05-08 Thread Alan Lemly
Mary,

I'm not sure your understanding of the charging level of iPhones is correct. I
think it depends on the model of the iPhone being charged. You might want to
take a look at the Apple Support article on USB power adapters found here and
which I'm pasting after my signature:

About Apple USB power adapters

This overview will help you identify a USB power adapter from Apple. When you
need to charge your iPhone or iPad, we recommend that you use the USB power
adapter and USB cable that came in the box with your device. These adapters and
cables are also available separately from Apple and authorized Apple resellers.

Customer safety is a top priority at Apple. That’s why all our
products—including USB power adapters that come in the box with iPhone and
iPad—undergo rigorous testing for safety and reliability and are designed to
meet government safety standards
  around the world.

For more information about charging your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, refer to
the Safety, Handling, and Support section of the iPhone User Guide
 , iPad User Guide
 , or iPod User Guide
 .

While iPod devices don't come with a power adapter in the box, you can use any
of the power adapters listed below with an iPod.

Learn about USB power adapter certifications

When an iOS device comes with an Apple USB power adapter, that adapter is
certified to meet government safety standards in countries and regions where
the device is available. Many of these countries and regions, including the
United States, have adopted the Safety of Information Technology Equipment
standard, IEC/UL 60950-1.

Apple USB power adapters are designed for use with power sources rated to
provide 100V AC to 240V AC at 50Hz to 60Hz. The Type A (flat parallel-blade
design) Apple 5W USB and 18W USB-C power adapters, as well as the 10W and 12W
USB power adapters (with Type A AC plug attached) also comply with the IEC/UL
60950-1 standard for use with power sources rated to provide 115V AC at 400Hz.

Re: Anker wired fast charging option for iPhone

2020-05-08 Thread Malcolm Parfitt
It depends on what iPhone you have. Models of iPhone 8 and above can accept a
charge of 9 Volts at 2 Amps which equals 18 Wats.

They will also take:

5 Volts at 2.5 Amps 12 Wats.

5 Volts ad 2 Amps 10 Wats

Your charger probably outputs 5 Volts at 1 Amp 5 Wats.

I think the highest wireless charge is about 7 Wats from memory.

Re: Anker wired fast charging option for iPhone

2020-05-08 Thread Mary Otten
I know that this charger puts out more power than the old iPad charger I’ve
been using for my phones. But it was my understanding that the iPhone was
limited, in that it can only charge at 7 1/2 watts. If that’s true, this 18
watt charger would be overkill for iPhones, because Apple won’t let them charge
that fast. I’m just trying to figure out, and I think I understand correctly,
that is all I have our iPhones, I really can’t do any better than my old iPad
charger.

Some people experienced that on some devices, but it does not seem to be a

I do not recall right now, which devices someone had that did this.

Sirius XM free through May

2020-05-08 Thread Wayne Merritt
Greetings. Passing this along for those interested. I learned from a
YouTube video yesterday that Sirius/XM is offering their service for
free to everyone through May. Go to their site:
www.siriusXm.com
There will be many headings about their packages, but there is a
heading on the page called “Stream Free at Home,” which talks about
the free streaming offer. After or below the heading is a link. There
are a few sign-up steps, such as filling in the email address, and
choosing a password, and then someone can listen online or through the
Sirius/XM app. I was able to sign up, put my account information in
the app, and start listening in a very short time. As I write this,
I’m listening to the First Wave channel, which is 80’s New Wave. The
iOS app is a little quirky, but it is completely accessible. I say
quirky because it took me a while to learn my way around and find
everything. So far, I've found very few unlabeled buttons. I know the
Sirius/XM app has had some accessibility issues in the past, but it
looks more or less completely accessible to me at this point. I’m not
sure if I will continue Sirius after May since there are so many
streaming options, but I’m taking advantage of the free offer. And,
with Corona perhaps going over part of the summer, the offer could be
extended.

Happy streaming,
Wayne Merritt

With assistive touch you get to app switcher by double tapping assistive touch,
then devices then more then app switcher.
For control center and notifications, you can either use the regular gestures
or you can double tap the assistive touch button then double tap control center
or notifications respectively. If control center is not immediately visible,
then its in devices and maybe under more just like the app switcher. I cannot
remember.

One relatively easy way is to enable the assistive touch feature in the
disability section of settings. it will put a virtual home button on your
screen at all times. You then double tap it and you will get several
options like device home and notifications. If you want the app switcher
you double tap this home button and double tap device and more and then
app switcher. Once you activate the assistive touch feature, the virtual
home button is most likely somewhere on the bottum of your screen.
There is another way to activate the home button by sliding up on the
screen, but I have never gotten this to work for me. I prefer the
 assistive touch feature.

Re: How to answer call, while on a call.

2020-05-08 Thread Alan Lemly
Hi Sieghard,

I'm using my wired Apple Earpods all the time and want to make sure I
understand what you're saying. If you receive a new call while talking on
another call, are you saying pressing the remote middle button on the Earpods
will answer the new call? I would have thought it would disconnect the existing
call. Can you please confirm this so I don't hang up on anyone?

Thanks.

RE: iphone x question

2020-05-08 Thread Carolyn
Yes, that is what I do and slide once from bottom to Home Page. I guess with
that Assistive Touch, you just press that virtual Home Button twice for Ap
Switcher.

Since I can do the new way, I think I won't try the assistive Touch, since the
new way is probably here to stay. I was surprised that the SE had a Home
Button, because with one, a little bit of screen space is bound to be lost.

No. It just gives you not another option for making certain gestures. There's
just a virtual assistive touch button on your screen, usually near the botom. I
like it because I find the sliding gesture hard to do, meaning that I've never
actually gotten it to work. It sounds easy from the descriptions but its never
worked for me. Personally I prefer the physical home button, so I will stick
with that kind of phone as long as I can.

2020-05-08 Thread Carolyn
Yes, it is hard to get back, if you make a successful answer to the second.
Yet, I now can make a three-way call, could add more, but haven't had occasion
for more than a few three-way calls.

That is one reason why I like to use the Apple Earpods for longer calls, if
another call comes in all I have to do is press the Answer/Hangup button (the
middle section of the remote on the headset) and it will switch to the other
call.
But for those times when I don't have the Earpods connected finding the Hold
and Answer button is not so difficult, As was suggested, make sure you pull
your phone away from your ear and make sure the screen is active, then touch
about the middle of the screen left to right but towards the bottom of the
phone and a swipe or two should get you to the correct button.
I find it more difficult sometimes to get back to the original caller once the
second caller hangs up.

Joshua,

It sounds as if the person you're talking to when the new call comes in is
disconnecting before you do your two finger double tap. Otherwise, I believe
your two finger double tap will hang up your first call rather than answering
the second call.

I also have that same issue with dictation.
I think it relates to whether your audio is set to default audio route or
external audio route.

Steve,

Hi List,

I said I would post the product names and links for the Anker 18W fast charger
power adapter and the Anker USB C to lightning cable I got for my SE 2020 after
getting and trying them out. Here are the product names and links at Amazon:

USB C Charger, Anker 18W PIQ 3.0 Compact Fast Charger Adapter, PowerPort III
Nano USB C Wall Charger for iPhone 11/11 Pro / 11 Pro Max/XR/XS/X, Galaxy S10 /
S9, Pixel 3/2, iPad Pro and More

This charger sells for $17.99 at Amazon US and has a 4.8 star rating. Here is
the link to it:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07WRKXQ8W/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Here is a TinyURL link to it:

https://tinyurl.com/yalw2nkk

I got a 6 foot Anker USB C to lightning cable named Anker USB C to Lightning
Cable, iPhone 11 Charger [6ft Apple MFi Certified] Powerline II for iPhone SE /
11 Pro/X/XS/XR / 8 Plus/AirPods Pro, Supports Power Delivery

This cable sells for $14.99 at Amazon US and has an Amazon rating of 4.6. Here
is the link to it:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07H256MBK/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Here is a TinyURL link to it:

https://tinyurl.com/y9or4w7p

The size of this 18W Anker charger feels the same as my 5W charger that came
with my SE 2020 so it's fairly small at about an inch square not counting the
plugs. My SE was 42% charged when I plugged it into the new fast charger with
the screen not locked. After 10 minutes of charging, my SE was 60% charged.
After 20 minutes of charging, my SE was 74%charged. After 30 minutes of
charging, my SE was 83% charged. The phone did not get overly warm during the
charging process and felt no different than when plugged into the 5W charging
plug that came with it.

For those who are unfamiliar with USB C plugs, they are small and plug in
either way just like the lightning plug. I will say the USB C plug is a bit
thicker in depth than the lightning plug.

I hope someone finds the above helpful.

What are people using for hiking navigation and GPS info?

Touch the Status bar where the clock, battery level, etc., are and flick up
with three fingers.
The first item in the third row is Lock Orientation, from the top going down
along the left side are Airplane Mode, Wifi, then Lock Orientation.

Make sure you also turned off Slide to Type, which is just after Predictive
Text in the Keyboard settings.

Misspelled words is a feature Apple has tried to make work to make it easier to
edit things you have written. It hasn't worked correctly yet, in iOS 13, but
rumor has it that it is finally fixed in iOS 13.5 which should be out someday
in the next month or two.
As for the rotor staying where you left it, welcome to the joys of iOS 13. It
doesn't do that. So, you often have to turn the rotor again.

I suspect that some of these issues have to do with going from a high version

Hi foks,

Is there a good GPS app for hiking? I have apps for on the road but as I’m
doing more off road hiking they are not helpful.

What are people using for hiking navigation and GPS info?

Thank you,

Eric Caron

I have an old one here called Ariadne GPS which allows you to set Poi's and
then it gives you distance and compass bearing - clock
face directions to the chosen poi.
Still seems quite reliable, don't know why I didn't use it more or lately
since I walk water courses as much as public highways.
Think it good for on-water as well as off-road. Sailing/canoeing is popular
too.
