We have a Brother all in one, that at least the printer portion works great,
but I am not sure I could use the fax or scanner/copier function.
My sighted wife bought it for the copy/scanner function, and was happy to
discover the printing works perfectly with the iPhone/iPad without the need for
an app.
But, it was about $180.
There are other Brother laser-jets that work fine with VoiceOver.
Just make sure it says it supports AirPrint.

Yes it's possible, set sounds to vibrate when silent in sound settings; then
toggle the mute switch to the on position;

RE: Exercise bikes

2020-07-27 Thread Simon A Fogarty
I can't give you exact names / models but yes there are now quite a few
products out there that are iPhone / IOs or android compatible

Your best bet would be to find a store or stockest of exercise equipment and go
in to have an actual look at the products to find one that suited you both in
what you are doing and how it feels when you are on it working out.

The last thing you want to do is purchase a product on line and find it wont
feel good for you while your on it.

Comfort during exercise is important especially when cycling,
You don't want to get a sore butt.
I personally use my road bike on a cycle erg that the back wheel should sit and
it helps set the resistance and still allows for using the gearing on the bike.

Good luck I hope you find something.

Dan, you can and should back-up your six and then you can directly transfer all

apple Accessability and they can instruct you on how to get this accomplished.
It is a farely pain-free process.

We have a Brother all in one, that at least the printer portion works great,
but I am not sure I could use the fax or scanner/copier function.
My sighted wife bought it for the copy/scanner function, and was happy to

But, it was about $180.
There are other Brother laser-jets that work fine with VoiceOver.
Just make sure it says it supports AirPrint.

Well, one way to do this is to create a custom ringtone that is silent.
Assign that one to the ringtone, and either leave the vibration the same, or
do a different vibration pattern; they have a few to choose from.

RE: apple's equivalent of the echo

2020-07-27 Thread Simon A Fogarty
Hi,

Are they play 1 or sonos 1 devices?

Only the sonos 1 or the latest of the sonos speakers have alexa built in,

So the play 1 and play 3& 5 don’t have alexa built in.

I did wonder if the amazon echo devices would allow you to use the sonos play
devices by alexa, but I’ve never been able to get it to work or figure it out.

So if your smaller speakers are sonos 1 then alexa will work for you.
Play 3 I don’t believe will.

Hello Simon
Thanks. I was looking for a Kindle book on Amazon site and came across a link
for my connections. Then there was an option to connect Sonos and it worked, so
I am not sure why it did not work via the app on my iPhone. I still have a
strange issue. My Sonos One and two Sonos Play3 speakers are setup in the same
group so that when streaming from my iPhone all will play. But the moment I ask
Alexa to play music only the Play One plays. When I then look at the Room
Settings on my PC or in the iPhone Sonos app the Play3 speakers are unselected.
I can not understand why this happens when I play via Alexa.

Then I think you may not have heard a Sonos system yet and while there a few
limitations, you can set up a Sonos One or some of th eother newer speakers
either as an Alexa or Google Home speaker. One limitation is that you can't use
features like Drop-In which you can do between actual Echo speakers.

Re: Silencing Ring Tone

2020-07-27 Thread Richard Turner
Well, one way to do this is to create a custom ringtone that is silent.
Assign that one to the ringtone, and either leave the vibration the same, or do
a different vibration pattern; they have a few to choose from.

Re: getting a new SE 2020 today

2020-07-27 Thread Gerardo Corripio
If possible, I'd recommend doing it from phone to phone transfer (or Quick
Start), then via iCloud. I speak from exferience having done this process about
a month ago, when going from a 1st Generation SE, to this 2nd Genouation SE.
What left me amazed is that through the Quick Start,vs the iCloud as I did
before when switching to newer mhones from previous ones, is that this time
around, everything (including passwords, and even music that on the previous
phone was transfered through iTunes), everything all transfered to this new SE
without a hitch! Whereas before via iCloud I needed to log-in to almost all of
my streaming and cloud services, with the Quick Start option during setup, I
only needed to log-in to one or 2 at the most! Everything else was taken care
of via the transfer.
Gd£Good luck in your new toy! I'm sure you'll love the better sound, and speed.

The new feature basically will perform a scan for text on the screen, making
previously inaccessible apps hopefully accessible. It will require the latest

Setting up a new iPhone SE 2020 step by step

2020-07-27 Thread Alan Lemly
Richard, thanks for the referral. I am reposting the below in case anyone is
interested.

Alan

Hi List,

I decided to make detailed notes of the steps involved in setting up a new
iPhone mainly for my own benefit since I forget what is involved as I only
do this every couple of years. In my case, I bought this SE 2020 directly
from the Apple Store app with no SIM card included since I have a prepaid
Verizon plan and could not specify my carrier successfully when ordering.
The below numbered list will be very detailed since I'd rather have too much
information than not enough. Any settings provided came from my iPhone 8
running iOS 13.4.1.

1.Opened iTunes on my Windows 7 computer, verified I was running
its latest version of 12.10.6, connected my iPhone 8 using the lightning
cable, and did an encrypted backup.

2.Did an iCloud backup by going to Settings - Alan Lemly - Apple
ID - iCloud - iTunes and App Store, iCloud, iCloud backup, and executing
Backup now.

3.I read a lot of books using the BARD Mobile app and since any
books downloaded to an iPhone are not transferred to a new restored iPhone,
I made a list in an Excel file of the downloaded books I wanted to
re-download to my new iPhone and the location of any current reading
position in those books.

4.I plugged my lightning cable connected to my computer to the
new phone and the Apple logo appeared on the screen. The white screen
appeared a few seconds later with the cycling languages appearing and I
pressed the home button 3 times quickly to turn on Voiceover. Although I was
hearing clicks as I swiped, Voiceover did not start talking until a number
of seconds later. In fact, I pressed the home button 3 times again because I
wasn't sure I had turned Voiceover on. This turned Voiceover off and I had
to press the home button 3 times again to turn it back on and I heard
Voiceover say hello and when I swiped once, Voiceover said press home to
open.

5.I pressed home and Voiceover said Setup and put me in a list of
language buttons with English at the top. I double tapped on English.

6.The screen which opened said Select your country or region
heading. I double tapped on the United States button which was the first in
the list.

7.The screen which opened said Quick start heading Bring your
current iPhone or iPad near this iPhone to sign in and set up. The older
iPhone must be using iOS 11 or later with Bluetooth turned on. There was a
button at the end to Set up manually.

8.A screen opened on my old iPhone to set up a new iPhone using
my apple ID with a button to continue. A screen appeared to position some
pattern in a circle but I double tapped the Authenticate manually button
instead.

9.I was prompted to input the 6 digit authentication code
displayed on my new iPhone using the number pad screen on my old iPhone. My
new iPhone then prompted me to enter my passcode of my old iPhone. I had to
double tap each number on the on screen number pad on my new iPhone since
touch typing was not turned on.

10.I was prompted to set up touch ID on the new iPhone which I did.

11.Several screens were presented asking me to place my finger and
lift my finger which I did. I was then taken to a screen which said Adjust
your grip and it said keep going to capture the edges of your grip. I double
tapped a Continue button at the bottom of this screen.

12.I was then prompted to again place and lift my finger until I got
the Complete message. Touch ID is ready was spoken and I then executed the
Continue button at the bottom of that screen.

13.The next screen said Transfer your data heading. The explanation
said you can directly transfer your data during setup or finish downloading
it later. Buttons on this screen were Transfer from iPhone, Download from
iCloud, or other options. The Transfer from iPhone said the time to transfer
was about 1 hour. The download from iCloud said I could start using my
iPhone in about 15 minutes and my data would download later over wifi. I
executed the Transfer from iPhone button.

14.I was taken to a Terms and conditions screen on the new iPhone
where I double tapped an Agree button in the bottom right corner.

15.I was taken to a Settings from other iPhone heading screen where
it listed some settings about allowing Siri to use voice input, contacts,
etc. and allowing maps to use my location. I executed the Continue button at
the bottom of this screen without customizing any settings.

16.I was taken to a Keep your iPhone up to date heading screen which
was basically a commercial for updating iOS automatically. At the bottom of
this screen was a Continue button followed by an Install updates manually
button. I chose the Install updates manually button.

17.I was then taken to a screen to Add cards to Apple Pay. Instead
of executing the Continue button, I chose to S

You can also do it from an iCloud back-up.

The direct transfer is excellent.

Alan Lemley had posted his steps a couple of times on how to do this.

I did it but didn’t write down the steps.

If you can find Alan’s post in the archives, it is worth reading.

Or, as Fred said, call Apple Accessibility and I suspect they can walk you
through it.

But, definitely back up your current phone.

Dan, you can and should back-up your six and then you can directly transfer all
of your info from the six to the SE. Can't remember how it is done, but call
apple Accessability and they can instruct you on how to get this accomplished.
It is a farely pain-free process.

It does not work on the Brialle Edge.
I just checked and the key that acts as the shift on a computer, is not a shift
key for Apple.
So one has to stick with the three keystrokes.

Yes, that is unique I believe to the Focus displays.
But, there are other displays with a shift key, like the braille edge and
QBraille that might work.
But, it will only work on a display with a shift key.

Well, I am assuming this is an apple Dash oriented command. So, if another
braille display has a shift key, I’m guessing this would work.

RE: apple's equivalent of the echo

2020-07-27 Thread Fanus Buys
Hello Simon

Nothing compares to the actual audio produced by the Homepod, nothing.

Except maybe for the Amazon Studio Speaker.

The Amazon devices certainly have a few more skills, no doubt about it, but

If you are very, very fast, you can press:

Space+dot7+1 for command, space+dot7+4 for shift, and then the letter d.

If you are like me and don’t want to try to rush that, you can press:

Space+dot8+1 to toggle command on,

Space+dot8+dot4 to toggle shift on, then hit the letter d.

Then, toggle off command and shift with the same keystrokes.

RE: Zoom F6Hi folks, hi folks, Do any of you know of a blind users group for the zoom F6? There is an iPhone app that goes with it and I’d like to know more about it. I need help. Thanks

I recently got an F6, and I got some good answers from Reapers without Peepers,
(RWP).

I don’t know of any group specifically for the F6, but I’d be glad to answer
any questions I know the answers to.

Is their a way to reverse the left and right rocker buttons either on the
display, or in the iPhone settings?

Thanks for your prompt attention!
