Go in to settings and then in to notifications. All of the different types of
alerts will be at the end of that long list.

The volume level on these alerts is high.

Subject: How do I find emergency alerts

Hi all,

I just received an emergency alert from my local police on my iPhone. I had
Siri read the message to me several times. I can not understand enough of the
words to understand what is being said.

Is there a place where I can go on my iPhone to read the message a word or
character at a time.

Many thanks,

James B

RE: NLS eReader by Humanware observations

2021-08-17 Thread Richard Turner
Alan,
Please forward this to your friend.

  1. You are troubled by its inaccuracies? Having an opinion about a strap
that is clearly designed as a neck strap, which you choose to treat as a handle
is not an inaccuracy; it is a difference of opinion. When I put it around my
neck, it was very uncomfortable for me; but would work fine as a handle which
won't help you if you want to use it in church while standing and reading the
hymn lyrics
Of course my observations are subjective, that is because they are my
observations and you are more than welcome to provide different observations;
but this is not about accuracy.

  1. I have used multiple braille displays as well and know for a fact that at
least 3 of the ones I've used had those markers.

  1. You said: "--Of course it does not have a notetaker. The digital talking
book machine does not have a digital recorder either. NLS provides reading
materials, not writing tools. That said, one can easily pair the eReader with
an iPhone or computer and use it to read and write in a variety of
applications. -I was presenting information to an audience that had no
information on the NLS eReader and was simply pointing out what is clearly
stated in the information on the eReader for those who do not have access yet
and have not read about it. In case you are not aware of it, observations are
not criticisms, they are observations...

  1. --Also worth mentioning here that users can download directly from NLS
BARD and NFB NEWSLINE. Downloads from either are lightning fast.
I have not seen any documentation on accessing NFB Newsline; I'd be very
interested in getting more info.

Thanks very much,

Subject: RE: NLS eReader by Humanware observations

I'm posting the below on behalf of a friend who is not on this list but who is
a part of the NLS eReader team:

I have read this list of observations regarding the HumanWare eReader and am
troubled by some of its inaccuracies.
I've been a part of the eReader team for NLS since its beginning , about 18
months ago, and will respond by inserting my comments between the original ones.
1. The neck strap is cheap and not at all comfortable. It is too skinny, and
made out of a very rough material.
--This is very subjective. I use it as more of a hand or wrist strap, and find
it perfectly convenient.
2. There are two space bars that for me, are not positioned well. I use my
right thumb for pressing the space bar and I find its position slightly too far
to the right.
3. There are the 20 cursor routing buttons over each cell, but no markers every
5 like on most displays with routing buttons.
--I had three other braille displays on my desk when I read this comment - from
three different manufacturers - ranging in age from four months to fifteen
years, and cell length from 20 to 40. None of them have these marker every
five spaces that are mentioned here. I believe what you refer to is the quirk
of one particular company, but not present in at least three of them.

4. The keyboard is ergonomically designed with the slight curve. The space bars
are below the braille cells, which is fine for me but I know some people prefer
the space bar closer to the keyboard.
The keys have more play in them than I expected. They feel a little spongy.
5. The case makes it look like a hardback book. It opens just like a book
cover, with the spine on the back of the unit leaving the front thumb keys
exposed. The best word I can think of is, "cute."
6. The braille feels better to me than on the Humanware braille note touch
plus, but not quite as good as on the Orbit Readers.
7. It does not have a note taker, but can be connected to a computer or a
smart phone to be used as a braille keyboard.
--Of course it does not have a notetaker. The digital talking book machine does
not have a digital recorder either. NLS provides reading materials, not writing
tools. That said, one can easily pair the eReader with an iPhone or computer
and use it to read and write in a variety of applications.
8. The setup for Bluetooth devices is much like other Humanware displays. It
follows Humanware's logic, which is not my logic, but following the
instructions did work.
9. NLS BARD login and download is very straight forward.
10. Changing braille grades is slow. Press Space+g and you have to wait about
6 or 7 seconds before the grade shows up, Then, once the one you want is on the
display, wait another 6 or 7 seconds for the display to go back to what you
were doing.
11. when used as a braille input device with an iPhone SE 2020, it works
pretty much as well as all displays work, which is very good.
12. The battery life seems to be maybe 6 or 8 hours, hard to be sure yet.

RE: Wireless charging pad

2021-08-17 Thread Richard Turner
To my surprise, the Nanami Wireless Charger that was due to arrive today,
actually arrived on Sunday morning. Delivered by the US Post Office no less.

This being my first hands-on with a wireless charging pad, this is what I can
say.
It is about 3.75 inches in diameter.
It comes with the “fast” charging block and a USB A to USB C cable that is 3
feet long.
When plugged in properly to the pad, the USB C plug clicks into place so you
know you have a good solid connection.

I don’t know what “fast” charging means on an iPhone SE 2020, but I have a thin
clear case that is rated to work with wireless charging pads. My phone went
from 10% to 100% in a little over three hours. Again, this is my first
experience with this kind of charger; but that doesn’t seem fast to me. Maybe
I’m missing something.

You do have to make sure it is in the center of the back of the phone, which
means that if you press the home button at all, it will teeter up off the
charger so you have to hold it down with the other hand. When I get a phone
with no home button, which I plan to do this fall, and if I keep the charger,
that won’t be an issue.

HTH,

Re: Wireless charging pad

2021-08-17 Thread Malcolm Parfitt
Richard,

As I understand it in terms of wireless charging fast charge is rated at 7.5
Watts. So that’s 5 Volts at 1.5 Amps.

To put this into some perspective, the old Apple chargers used to be 5 Watts, 5
Volts at 1 Amp. So your wireless charger is a little faster than the standard
Apple chargers.

If you use wired charging method then your iPhone SE can take a charge of 9
Volts at 2 Amps giving you a rating of 18 Watts. This is the fastest charging
method and will charge from flat to 50% in around 30 minutes. This does not
mean that your iPhone will charge to 100% in an hour as the device slows the
charging rate as the battery nears 100%.

You will also see two other charging profiles that your iPhone will accept, 5
Volts at 2 Amp giving 10 Watts and 5 Volts at 2.5 Amps giving you 12.5 Watts.
These are typically found on many power banks.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for posting that, richard. I thought that post that was forwarded was an
extreme overreaction on the part of the originator. So I’m glad you stood up
for your original post. I think you are exactly correct, although I have no
clue about the displays with the dots every five characters. It seems to me
maybe I have seen one like that in the very distant past, perhaps in Alva? But
other than that I can’t think of any. Doesn’t mean they don’t exist of course.

A little over three hours? That is about how long it would take using a regular

Re: Wireless charging pad

2021-08-17 Thread Brett Campbell
I received mine yesterday. I don’t have experience to compare either, but I did
think it would charge a little faster. It is kind of fun just to lay the phone
down and have it charge. I do have to pay attention to not bumping it off
center. I also like just setting my AirPods Pro on the pad.

Thanks Malcolm,
So, this provides 7.5 ... I'll have to check on the amps.

Hello Richard,

That sounds about right.

If you’re interested there is an app that will enable you to check your
iPhone’s battery level from your Apple Watch, take a look at:

https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/battery-life/id1080930585

You can then monitor your iPhone charge without disturbing it on the wireless
charger.

RE: Wireless charging pad

2021-08-17 Thread Star Gazer
I like the convenience of wireless charging but I’m
finding my phone isn’t always centered on the charger. I will feel it vibrate,
here a ping sound, it will say its charging and then it will just randomly
stop. The charger is fine, obody else has the problem of their phones not being
centered, so I’m wondering if any totally blind users who like wireless
charging can give me a hint?

Screen Shot question?

2021-08-17 Thread Malcolm Parfitt
I have a vague recollection that it is possible to take a screen shot where the
information is displayed on more than one screen.

For example if I perform a search in Apple Music and the results are on more
than one screen, how do you capture the entire list and not just the first
screen?

Thanks.

I know for iPhone eight models you quickly press and hold and let go of the
home button and the power button I’m not sure about later models that’s how you
capture a screenshot in general I tested it out last night. Worked like a charm
and it’s in the photos app that the screenshot appears.

have Safari to use cookies. Is there another app I can use such as the
default email app on my phone so don't have to use cookies with Safari?

hi,

After I placed my phone on the wireless charger, I routinely touch the top
right corner of the screen to get the battery level announcement. If it is
charging it will tell me battery level 60% on AC power. If it is not accurately
placed on the charger, it just announces battery level 60%.

Hope this helps. Keith

Adding anEmail Account to iPhone5S From outlook.com?

2021-08-17 Thread Fazil
Hi, Group.

I am trying to add an email account to my iPhone5S from outlook.com but I am
not sure what to select from New Account, I mean when I am offered the
providers such as Yahoo, Microsoft Exchange etc. I do not select Microsoft
Outlook because it might confuse it with the Outlook mail client.
Outlook.com is a webmail service from Microsoft but iPhone5S does not
include this service in its option. Should I select Others?

If I do that, it wants me to provide the information such as SMTP

How can I add this Outlook account to my iPhone5S, please?

Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks!

Bard app won’t open!

2021-08-17 Thread Sherrie Gosling

My Bard app will not open at all. I used it normally last evening. Now, no
matter which way I try to open it it just says audio and then reverts to the
home screen. I tried opening it by double tapping, by going to the app switcher
which does say it is open, by going to App Store and tapping on open. I even
went to manage storage in settings and offloaded the app and then did the
reinstall app that was supposed to work without deleting my data. I really,
really do not want to delete the app totally as I have 92 books in my
downloaded library.
I am running the latest version of the Bard app on my SE 2020 which is running
14. Seven. One.
Bard is still working on my old 6S which is running the same specs as my SE
2020.
By the way, I did restart the phone twice after deleting everything from app
switcher to see if that would help. It did not.
Any ideas other than deleting and starting over with the app Would be greatly
appreciated.
Thank you,
Sherrie Gosling

from 10% to 100% in a little over three hours.

There was a 6.% coupon when I was on the site. this is by Nanami, who I do not
really know; , but they include the fast charging adapter; where the Anchor for
a few dollars less did not.
It has a 60 day return policy which I like.

Amazon makes this stuff too easy.

Re: Wireless charging pad

2021-08-17 Thread Richard Turner
Malcolm, I installed the app. How does one get it to recognize your iPhone?
It shows it, but shows zero battery ... and it looks like you have to pay $1.99
to get the watch part. Is that right?

 Hello Richard,

That sounds about right.

If you’re interested there is an app that will enable you to check your

You can then monitor your iPhone charge without disturbing it on the wireless

This being my first hands-on with a wireless charging pad, this is what I can

I’m posting the below on behalf of a friend who is not on this list but who is
a part of the NLS eReader team:

I have read this list of observations regarding the HumanWare eReader and am
troubled by some of its inaccuracies.
I’ve been a part of the eReader team for NLS since its beginning , about 18
months ago, and will respond by inserting my comments between the original ones.
--I had three other braille displays on my desk when I read this comment – from
three different manufacturers – ranging in age from four months to fifteen
years, and cell length from 20 to 40.

My updated observations of the NLS eReader from Humanware

2021-08-17 Thread Richard Turner
I have had the eReader from NLS made by Humanware for about six days now.
My updated impressions are below, in no particular order.
1. The neck strap is cheap and not at all comfortable to me. It is too skinny,
and made out of a very rough material.
2. There are two space bars that for me, are not positioned well. I use my
right thumb for pressing the space bar and I find its position slightly too far

are below the braille cells, which is fine for me but I know some people prefer

The keys have more play in them than I expected. They feel a little spongy.
5. The case makes it look like a hardback book. It opens just like a book
cover, with the spine on the back of the unit leaving the front thumb keys
exposed. The best word I can think of is, "cute."
6. The braille feels better to me than on the Humanware braille note touch
plus, but not quite as good as on the Orbit Readers.
7. For those thinking of this as a free replacement for a braille note taker,
be aware that it does not have a note taker, but can be connected to a computer
or a smart phone to be used as a braille keyboard.
8. The setup for Bluetooth devices is much like other Humanware displays. It
follows Humanware's logic, which is not my logic, but following the
instructions did work.
9. NLS BARD login and download is very straight forward.
   A. NFB Newsline is also easy and fast to download. Too bad NFB
Newsline is not mentioned in the User Guide.
13. There is no internet browser, Wi-Fi is used for downloading BARD books and
updating the firmware.
14. The wi-Fi set up was pretty straight forward, as Humanware devices go.
15. I have not tried using it with the computer.
16. It takes approximately 20 seconds to start up and about 17 seconds to shut
down, though if you just put it to sleep it is very fast.

To get an eReader from NLS you have to contact your regional library for the
blind and sign up for braille materials, and then request the eReader. If you
already receive braille materials, simply contact them and ask how to get sign
up for an eReader if your library is participating in the program that is..
At this point, it is still considered a pilot program and you have to agree to
participate in several surveys at 2, 4, and 6 months after receiving the device
and of course, to return it if you are not going to use it. If you want, you
can keep it after the pilot project is finished.
Oregon seems to be getting the Humanware device; some states are getting the
one from Zoomax.
There are YouTube videos walking through each device, settings, how to..., etc..

VoiceOver Volume Always Low on 12 Pro Max

2021-08-17 Thread Steve Matzura
Ever since I got the device back in June, I've noticed two odd behaviors
about VoiceOver which I can't explain which hopefully you can.

1. The VoiceOver voice, no matter which one it is, is always low, lower
than any other audio the phone can produce. This includes phone calls,
FaceTime, Zoom, media playback such as Music, Web content, etc. It's this
way on both the built-in speakers and headphone output.

2. When the VoiceOver voice begins speaking, it ramps up in volume from
something ridiculously low up to a higher level over the course of about
three syllables.

All of the above is quite annoying when I ask Siri a question, the Siri
voice speaks loudly, then the VoiceOver voice comes on, ramps up in
volume over the course of a few syllables, but it's never half as loud
as the Siri voice. This tells me I've got some level-limiting setting
turned on which I can't find. Any ideas welcome and gratefully received.

Hearing Aid Not Pairing on 12 Pro Max

2021-08-17 Thread Steve Matzura
For the first time in eighteen months, I got to go out to a public
gathering. Of course, I put a fresh set of batteries in my hearing aids
and inserted them into my ears, but when I tried using the phone with
them, not only were they not paired with the phone, but I could not do
the pairing. I opened Bluetooth Settings and found somebody's LG
something in the area with which I accidentally paired, but my hearing
aids weren't even on the list. My aids are not the type that can receive
firmware updates, so I know that's not the problem. However, I do have
an Apple Watch, and it was correctly paired with the phone. Is it
possible that it's not permissible to have a watch and aids paired at
the same time? Or did I possibly forget to set something up on the phone
correctly when I did the initial install and setup, moving from the 10S
(or XS) Max to the 12 Pro Max two months ago?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions, gratefully received.

First, is the VoiceOver volume in the rotor, and what do you have it set at?
2. In settings, sounds, is change with buttons off?
3. Ask Siri a question that will take a little while to answer, like the
forecast for the week; and adjust the volume while it is speaking.
That should set the Siri volume.
4. Do you have Audio ducking enabled?

I think you are probably right Andy, but not having a brailliant to compare, I
can only go by what I've heard and read.

Subject: My updated observations of the NLS eReader from Humanware

I have had the eReader from NLS made by Humanware for about six days now.
My updated impressions are below, in no particular order.
1. The neck strap is cheap and not at all comfortable to me. It is too skinny,
and made out of a very rough material.
2. There are two space bars that for me, are not positioned well. I use my
right thumb for pressing the space bar and I find its position slightly too far
to the right.
3. There are cursor routing buttons over each of the 20 cells, but no markers
every 5 like on other displays I have used with routing buttons.

There are YouTube videos walking through each device, settings, how to…, etc..
Here is the physical description link for the Humanware device:

I have just removed the app from my iPhone and Apple Watch.

Reinstalling the app the battery percentage for my iPhone and Watch show up on
my Apple Watch.

Not sure what purchases cover except the removal of adverts.

Try restarting both devices, does your iPhone charge level then show up on your
Apple Watch?

Thanks Malcolm, rebooting worked.
I think the purchase gets rid of the ads, but may also allow a watch
complication. I'm going to pay the $1.99 to get rid of the ads.
I'll let you know if anything else comes of it.

I thought the comment about NLS not providing writing tools was over the top.

Sherrie,

I'm sorry you're having problems with your BARD Mobile app. I can't think of
anything you haven't tried. Before you uninstall the app, I'd recommend you
write nlsdownl...@loc.gov. They have an excellent support team and it would be

Outlook.com
is a webmail service from Microsoft but iPhone5S does not include this service
in its option. Should I select Others?
If I do that, it wants me to provide the information such as SMTP……..
How can I add this Outlook account to my iPhone5S, please?
Any help is much appreciated.
Thanks!

RE: Wireless charging pad

2021-08-17 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Not sure if you have a different model then the one I see on Amazon Canada, but
the one they show there does not support Apple's fast charging standard. It has
only 10 Watts for Android phones and charges iPhones with 7.5 Watts which is
the standard. Apple's fast charging standard is I think 15 Watts and requires
charging pads which can deliver that.
I don't think this charging pad comes with a wall adapter, either and you
really have to make sure you have the correct wall adapter to deliver enough
power and a compatible charging pad to support the maximum charging speed.
Personally I don't care all that much because for the most part I use the
wireless charger over night or when I am in my office so I really couldn't care
less if it can charge my phone a bit faster or not. I just like the convenience
of laying it down on a charger instead of having to fiddle with a cable and of
course at night I often want to plug in my wired Earpods so I couldn't do that
if I were charging with a cable unless I bought one of the expensive Belkin
Rockstar adapters.

Best regards,
Sieghard

Sieghard, I'm not sure what would be different in Canada, but it does come with
the large, 15 Watt charging block and the USB a to USB C cable. The box says
"Fast Charging."
But, what it says and what it actually does is not always the same thing as you
know.
I too don't care about the fast; other than it claims to be such.

I don't find it all that difficult to centre it, but if you have that problem
you can always buy a wireless charging cradle. I have one in the living room
and when the phone is on it, it sits on a sort of 45 degree angle and the
bottom of the phone rests against an edge and the cradle is basically about the
width of my phone so it's super easy to line it up. Of course if you had an
iPhone 12 or are buying a new iPhone this fall and have a MagSafe compatible
charger that is probably not an issue because the magnets line it up and would
keep it in place and safe from bumps.

I like the convenience of wireless
charging but I’m finding my phone isn’t always centered on the charger. I will
feel it vibrate, here a ping sound, it will say its charging and then it will
just randomly stop. The charger is fine, obody else has the problem of their
phones not being centered, so I’m wondering if any totally blind users who like
wireless charging can give me a hint?

of use out of it and by the sounds you are somebody who doesn't enjoy a new

device, I find it scary, at the very least. So here's my question. When I take
my new phone out of the box and begin the set-up process, I'd like to use my
Braille device as soon as possible to enter information. How soon in the set-up
process may I connect the device, or is this even necessary or possible. Can I
set my new phone up without help from anyone? Just wondering as I consider this
giant step. Thanks for advice and encouragement from those of you who are much
more tech savvy than I am.

Peace & Blessings,
Pastor Duane L. Steele

Re: Bard app won’t open!

2021-08-17 Thread Andy Baracco
Sometimes issues with apps connecting to the internet can be corrected by
resetting network settings. You can do this by going to
Settings/General/reset, and tapping on Reset Network Settings. Make sure
you tap on that and not on Reset All Settings, which is the previous
control. After doing this, you may need to resign into your apps that
require a sign in.

Sherrie,

I'm sorry you're having problems with your BARD Mobile app. I can't think of
anything you haven't tried. Before you uninstall the app, I'd recommend you
write nlsdownl...@loc.gov. They have an excellent support team and it would
be worth running your issue by them before doing anything drastic.

Subject: Bard app won’t open!

My Bard app will not open at all. I used it normally last evening. Now, no
matter which way I try to open it it just says audio and then reverts to the
home screen. I tried opening it by double tapping, by going to the app
switcher which does say it is open, by going to App Store and tapping on
open. I even went to manage storage in settings and offloaded the app and
then did the reinstall app that was supposed to work without deleting my
data. I really, really do not want to delete the app totally as I have 92
books in my downloaded library.
I am running the latest version of the Bard app on my SE 2020 which is
running 14. Seven. One.
Bard is still working on my old 6S which is running the same specs as my SE
2020.
By the way, I did restart the phone twice after deleting everything from app
switcher to see if that would help. It did not.
Any ideas other than deleting and starting over with the app Would be
greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Sherrie Gosling
