Re: purchasing iPhone 13

2021-08-26 Thread Richard Turner
i am planning to do just that at this moment, depending what I learn in
September. The first and foremost why; is that I came into some extra money so
I don't have to think about the cost. The second reason would be the newer
LIDAR capability and the fact the app developers have had another year to
implement the feature for object location/identification and distance. Plus, I
need a phone with more memory than the 128 GB I bought with the SE 2020.

Hi are any of you using the Alex voice on your phone?

And if so what made you select it over all the other voices that you can use on

Also what is the speed rate you find that he reads the best where you can

Re: iPad as a Productivity Tool

2021-08-26 Thread Mary Otten
I haven’t had an iPad in a long time. I think having one with a Bluetooth
keyboard would be good if it has gotten better with Accessibility. For example,
as far as I know, there is no good way to deal with anything but a very
rudimentary PDF document on Apple products.. Got links. Nothing. Have to read a
table? Can’t do it. I don’t know how word and XL would work, but I sure
wouldn’t do it without a keyboard. I thought Apple had instituted some kind of
find future equivalent to what we’ve been able to do in windows for years with
screen readers. But I might be wrong. I thought they had done it for the Mac
with voiceover but that would’ve carried over to the iPad. But since my only
Apple products these days are an iPhone and watch, I’m not in a position to
make definitive statements.

Also, if you are on certain phones, for example the iPhone 8, you can turn the
phone off by pressing and holding the side power button by itself until you
hear the "power off" option.

As for turning off the phone, there are only 2 ways:

1. Settings > General > Turn off iPhone, to speed it up a bit you can ask SIRI
to go to General Settings, then do a 4-finger ap near the bottom of the screen
and focus should be on the Turn off button. Of course after you tap it you
still have to tap the "Power Off" button.
2. Press and hold the Side Button and Volume Down for a second or so, focus may
not be on the Power Off button and you have to be a bit careful in case it is
on Emergency Call, just flick left a couple of times and you should be on Power
Off.

As for turning it on there are also 2 ways:

1. Press and hold the side button and count to about 5 or 6, then let go and
wait about 15 seconds and Voiceover should come on.
2. You can plug the phone in to a Lightning cable attached to power or put it
down on a wireless charging pad, as soon as charging starts it will also power
up your iPhone.

You definitely do not have to hold it for a minute, about 15 to 20 seconds is
plenty, I always do a somewhat slow count to 15 so my true time might be 20

yes but what he didn't say was to hold the power button in for over a minute
which I didn't do initially.

RE: Turning off and then back iPhone

2021-08-26 Thread Sieghard Weitzel

2021-08-26 Thread Daniel MacDonald
Hello,

Though I have no solutions, I’d say, report it to apple either using
accessibil...@apple.com or apple.com/feedback
. Both places would be good. In the mean time,
become a public beta tester. Apple always fixes the bugs I report and I am a
beta tester. Actually testing developer betas.

In the past several updates to iOS, key clicks don't work until after connecting either a braille display or keyboard with Bluetooth.

2021-08-26 Thread Kevin Minor
Hi.

This is one that doesn't make sense to me. After my iPhone X updates to a new
iOS, I lose the click sound when I enter something with the on screen keyboard.
I particularly notice this when unlocking my phone. I checked Settings, and
it's on. When I connect either my Focus or a keyboard with Bluetooth, the sound
is there, and it stays after I disconnect what I was using.

Any ideas?

Have a blessed day and don't work too hard.

Re: Turning off and then back iPhone

2021-08-26 Thread Richard Turner
Which phone do you have?
I think the technique might be different with the phones with no home button.
Try holding the side button for 6 or 10 seconds and the power off button should
show up on the screen.
Try flipping the mute switch down when you turn it on and see if you don't get
a slight vibration as it comes back.

Any Experiences with the Call Filter App?

2021-08-26 Thread Lisa Belville

Hi, all.

Part of my upgrade package with Verizon gives me the option to download
and use the Call Filter app. It's supposed to make it possible to block
spam/robocalls. Has anyone used this app and how was it regarding
accessibility?

RE: iPad as a Productivity Tool

2021-08-26 Thread Ekstrand, Pamela A. -ND
Hi Joe,

I do have an iPad and enjoy it, but there are still some things I find much
easier to do on a PC.

You can navigate by headings in a browser, but I know of no way to do this
without using the rotor.

I also am a heavy user of the Find feature with JAWS on web pages and am not
aware of an equivalent in IOS. I would love to be proven wrong on this.

I also need to use Excel and Word quite a lot, which I find much easier on the
PC.

So it really depends on what you want to use it for, in my opinion.

Pam

Subject: iPad as a Productivity Tool

Hi, I'm hoping someone can help educate me on the practical use of an
iPad, a topic I know comes up routinely on the list. I have an iPhone,
understand the benefits of iOS and the great progress of Voiceover.
I'm still on the hunt for a productive tablet though and wonder if the
iPad has improved in the past couple years, understanding of course
that "improvement" is purely subjective.

First, have we made any progress with web browsing on iOS? That is to
say, with a Bluetooth keyboard, have we improved the ability to do
things like jump from heading to heading or navigate by paragraph
without using the roter?

Second, regarding document editing, is Ulysses still the best editing
app out there? I'm looking for something to integrate well with
Dropbox and is able to accept Markup language. I'd rather pay a lump
sum as opposed to a subscription plan, but if Ulysses is still the
best bet, I'd be curious to know this.

Yes, I am guilty of wanting to see some of the JAWS ease of use on
iOS, which I know is not possible or fair. Still, I am a creature of
habit, and if my only recourse is to circle back to PC tablet options,
I'll do so. The iPad is always back there in the back of my mind, and
if you've picked it up as your tool of productivity, I'd love to hear
from you.

Thank you kindly in advance,

Joe

2021-08-26 Thread Anthony Vece
Hi Joe; I’ve been using iOS products and Mac products since 2015. I’ve never
went back to windows for any reason. Just pick up the iOS and Mac products and
don’t look back. When I want to edit an app I bring it into notes. I do it by
hand. And you certainly can jump from heading to heading with a Bluetooth
keyboard. Hope this helps. Anthony

Re: the Hoopla app and starting the playing of media

2021-08-26 Thread Barbara Stahl
I use this app too, but I would say that it works relatively well with VO
rather than great.
I have the latest version of the app on my phone and it won't tell you how much
of an audiobook you have left to read. Also, I don't see a way to move through
the book by chapters or sections, just the buttons that let you move in 30
second intervals. Personally, I prefer the overdrive app, but its nice to have
most audiobooks available to borrow any time you want rather than having to
wait for them to become available as you have to do with the overdrive app.

I have not experimented but for over a year now, many people have said that you
need to hold the power button down for a minute or so.

Is this just one of those rumors that have been floating around for over a year

Yeah, it is amazing how many problems can be solved by either restarting it, or
doing a hard reset, which is what you did. Who knows what happened to it.
Actually, you don't need to hold the power button in more than maybe 10 seconds
or so. I was just curious as to what happened to it.

ok what you do is press in volume up button, then volume down button and
then hold in the power button for over a minute I would suggest a minute
and a half and by this time your screen should be blank wait a further
minute and then power your phone on.  hope that is of some use.  Janet

Hi Richard,
I am running the latest software version whatever that is 14 point something
whatever the last update was and no it just says the name of the braille
display and you double tap on it and then it gives you all the settings the
only other thing I could think of is that it showing up if you look in the
board mobile app and you go under settings there are settings for Belle braille
displays, unless they didn’t take it off my account I have tried to call them I
have received no response for them from them as of yet. Know when that braille
display shows up in settings
Sorry about that when I go to settings and I find braille display and it says
the name the only thing you can do is double tap on it you can’t do anything
else and there’s all the settings there is if I had a braille display.
It’s definitely a first for me I have never encountered this before.
Thanks for all your help.
Have a question where do you teach??

It sure is crazy that when you touch the name of that display in the braille
settings and flick up there is no more option.
Which iOS are you running?

Other than it sitting there, is it getting in your way? I’d be tempted to
ignore it if it isn’t causing a problem.
Perhaps then in the next iOS update, it will just go away. Fingers crossed.

Janet,

Are you sure your iPhone battery has any charge? I'd suggest you plug it into a
power adapter in the wall and give it a couple of hours to charge and try the
reset again with volume up, volume down, and holding in the side power button.
You will be prompted for your passcode when resetting this way.

RE: Question about update

2021-08-26 Thread Rena
Hi,

I checked my iPhone 6S, and yes, the update was done. The same happened with
contacts. First I updated the contacts in the SE using the Mac, and when I
tried to update the contacts in the 6S, the contacts were already updated.

Perhaps all this happened through iCloud. I’m just guessing.

Thanks for your answers.

Rena,

It seems very unlikely that both of your iPhones were updated when you updated
your SE with your Mac. I don't use a Mac but a two for one update would seem to
violate computer logic in my opinion.

You can check the version of your 6S by going to Settings, General, Software
update and seeing what version is there.

Hello,

I have 2 iPhones: 6S and SE. I updated the SC using my Mac, and when I tried to
update the 6S also using the Mac, it seemed that the update was already done.

Is it possible that the second iPhone updated when I updated the first one?

In any case, where do I go to check the iOS version of the 6S?

I don’t use WIFI.

Hi, my opinion may be helpful, at least to some extent, since I’m not a native
speaker and English is a language I’ve learned as an adult. I used Alex for a
couple of years on my iphone, but I noticed that at times it mispronounced some
words, at other times I wasn’t able to understand it because the
pronunciation, although close to an accurate pronunciation, was
unconventional. So, now I use Tom, which from my perspective, is more
understandable. 70 percent is my speaking rate.
I believe that the high quality thing has nothing to do with this, and instead
of that, there might be other possible explanations beyond the simplistic and
simplifying cliché of saying that this is a subjective matter. In my computer,
for instance, I love to use the Eloquence voice in English as well. Some
friends of mine that are native speakers were surprised that I use Eloquence at
a very high rate speed, and still being able to understand it.

2021-08-26 Thread Arnold Schmidt
Yeah, it is amazing how many problems can be solved by either restarting it, or
doing a hard reset, which is what you did. Who knows what happened to it.
Actually, you don't need to hold the power button in more than maybe 10 seconds
or so. I was just curious as to what happened to it.

RE: the Alex voice

2021-08-26 Thread literophilus

Best,

 Leo Bado.

Hi are any of you using the Alex voice on your phone?

And if so what made you select it over all the other voices that you can use on

Also what is the speed rate you find that he reads the best where you can
