RE: Face ID Revisited

2022-01-01 Thread Fazil M.
Thanks much, Sieghard.

Is swipe up same as flick up that we do when select a month or a day? Or is it
like as we move icon to icon?

Or, is this like dragging/rubbing my fingertip on the screen-surface starting
from the bottom edge of the screen and drag it to the middle of it?

I am very sorry for being vague.

Thanks again.

Fazil, after you wake up your phone you first have to swipe up from the bottom
of the screen. If I hold my iPhone in front of my face with the screen locked
and then press the side button the lock screen comes up but nothing else
happens. As soon as I touch near the bottom of the phone and swipe up about
half way Face Id is activated and my phone unlocks instantly.

As for Chris's concern, I also have my bank apps, credit card apps and so on
installed on my phone, but they need separate verification and while you can
set most of such apps to also use Face Id, you don't have to. If you were
really concerned, why not at least allow the phone to be unlocked with Face Id,
but set up your important apps to require you to enter your password?

As for a thief holding the phone up to my face, first of all said thief has to
get a hold of my phone which if it is a grab and run means he won't have time
to unlock it by holding it up to my face. If you had Touch Id before, did you
also not use it? After all, a thief could just force you to put your finger on
the home button and for that matter, how much paid would you take before you
give him your passcode?

Hi, Cris.

How do you unlock the phone with the passcode?

I, for instance, ask Siri to launch Messages for me and she wants me unlock the
phone first with the number pad on the screen. I type the passcode and Messages
app opens. But I can not go to homepage from there. Again I have to ask Siri to
open certain apps for me but, since the phone is unlocked now, she does not ask
for the passcode.

RE: A reason not to spend the big Bucks for Apple Airpods including Airpod Max or at least not yet

2022-01-01 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
The Airpods Max here in Canada are $779 + taxes, since in Ontario you have 15%
HST that means you would pay $ 895.85 for them.
The Airpods Pro are $329 + taxes and the Airpods Third Gen are $239 + taxes,
still 274.85.

I also agree with that as well and speeking as a Canadion yes I agree it does
cost more hear in Canada then it does in the US. And let's also bring in to the
situation those of us who live on fixt incomes like Ontario Disibillidey
support and live on like my self 700 a month for paying bills etc oncemy rent
is taken off. Yes I know that we have a lot more to live on but I am strickley
talking about the amount in the bank that we have to play around with once the
rent is taken off of my check every month since it is taken off automatically.
So for instince I have never had enough to pay for a IPhone out right so I am
stuck paying off a phone on a 2 year contract the same go's forajy other apple
products like the apple watch for example. Shure you can get one for 0 dollars
down but you still have to pay it off over the years. It would be nice if
programs hear in Ontario like the assistive divices program would support the
purchis of different apple products like the apple watch Iphone, etc. in fact I
filld out a servay that made that idea. My point is that I agree what people
choose or not choose to spend there oney on is there choice how ever not
everyone has the funds to upgrade to the latest and gratest every year or what
have you. For instince I am still using the Iphone 8 and it is still holding up
verry well. Could I upgrade? Yes of korce I could and I might or I might just
wate. But for instince the air pods wile I like the idea of beaing whierless
and having bluetuth on my phone I don't lissen to music will going out for
walks and stuff so to me the idea of just whired ear buds are just fine. How
ever I am happy to hear that they are only 200 instead of the 700 or what I
thought they would be. From Mich Verrier from New Liskeard Ontario Canada.

I agree with that, but it also depends on whether you are talking about
technology which is what I would call essential and technology which is less
so. I need my iPhone for many things every day so it better be in top shape,
but while for me a set of wired Earbuds are essential, a $700 Bluetooth headset
like the Airpods Max is luxury and before all of you south of the border inform
me that it is only $549 or whatever it costs there, I am talking about our
currency.
Anyways, it's like with everything, people decide what they need and what they
want and spend their money accordingly.

True, everything will be better in a year or two but then that's a year or two
I'll be using even older technology while I keep waiting. I'm not saying people
should never wait. It obviously depends on how long you'd be waiting and how
unhappy you are with what you have now. I tend to keep my technology for quite
a while, but I don't wait as long as I used to. I held on to my iPhone 4S
forever because I kept thinking if I just wait another six months, I'll see
what Samsung has to offer and then six months after that Apple will have some
new iPhones out and so on. By the time I pulled the trigger I was using a
device I was pretty unhappy with and that hadn't been getting IOS updates for a
while.

A statement which very rarely applies to technology because whatever passes me
by will be better in a year or two.
A good example would be the Airpods, if I wanted to buy a set I'd much rather
buy them now than when they first came out 4 or whatever years ago because I
know I'd be replacing them by now.

2022-01-01 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Fazil, the camera sees a lot, just don't hold it too close to your face. I just
did a few tests, if I held it really close like just the length of a finger
away from my face, it didn't work,. I then moved it a bit further and it
unlocked, it seems 6 or 8 inches is even enough, but then I also tried it
holding it as far away as I could which means basically at arms length and it
also worked so there definitely is quite a lot of wiggle room. Usually if you
hold it about 30 cm away as Caroline suggested it should be fine.

And let's not forget that many iPhones may be stolen for parts, the fact is
that if an iPhone has a passcode nobody will get into it, after all, even the
government has a lot of problems to gert into a locked phone, but that doesn't
mean they can't sell the screen and battery etc. to a repair shop or ship them
off to Asia or some place where they are used to fix somebody's phone.

Cris,

I guess I see your point but you seem to be sacrificing a lot of convenience
for the supposed risk. Only you can assess the reel risk to which you're
exposed but unless your thief also gets your passcode or takes your face too,
it seems unlikely they'll gain access to all your stuff. Each financial app
requires face ID to access it and without your passcode, the face ID cannot be
reset. And I would think face ID with attention turned on would be more
convenient than entering a four or six digit PIN every time. But to each his
own.

But to each his
own.

RE: Face ID Revisited

2022-01-01 Thread Sieghard Weitzel

How do you unlock the phone with the passcode?
I, for instance, ask Siri to launch Messages for me and she wants me unlock the
phone first with the number pad on the screen. I type the passcode and Messages
app opens. But I can not go to homepage from there. Again I have to ask Siri to
open certain apps for me but, since the phone is unlocked now, she does not ask
for the passcode.

Well I have been saying this for many months now. A complete waste of money in

Here is an interesting article which shows how limited Bluetooth connectivity
is and that includes the ultra high priced Airpods Max headphones:

[xlsx icon]Bluetooth Is Holding Back Apple’s AirPods
Ambitions

So, I'll continue to wait for a Sonos headset which will of course add the
headset to my existing Sonos system via Wi-Fi and will be able to provide true
lossless quality sound and most likely for less than what the Airpods Max dcost.

Apple Watch Series 7

2022-01-01 Thread Andrew Roberts
Hello everyone and a very happy New Year to you all.

For Christmas I was given an Apple Watch series 7. I couldn't wait to set it
up and I had no problem pairing it with my phone and getting it all working.
It has been working perfectly until today but this evening I have encountered a
problem.

About 2 hours ago I received a text from my sister, the notification of which I
read on my watch. I then retrieved my Bluetooth keyboard, turned it on, and
responded to a few texts using my phone. Having finished my texts and turned
the Bluetooth keyboard off I then returned to my watch but unfortunately
Voiceover isn't speaking at all. Not only is it not speaking but I can't hear
the clicks when flicking around the screen either although I can feel some of
the vibrations and haptics so the watch is obviously working. I have been into
the watch app. Voiceover is definitely turned on and the volumes look OK.
Having said that, some things do seem to have changed by themselves. For
example my screen curtain was on whereas it was definitely turned off before.
Does anyone know what the problem might be and how I can get the watch talking
again please?

Thank you for any help that might be forthcoming.

Andrew

RE: The Native Mail App

2022-01-01 Thread Alan Lemly
Hi Lynn,

Find the App Store icon on your home screen and execute it. Place focus on the
bottomline toolbar and swipe right to the last button on the right which is
Search and double tap. Just below the status bar which contains time, etc. and
is at the top of the screen is a search field or box which you should double
tap. The on screen keyboard will appear and you can type the word mail and
place focus on the search button in the bottom right hand corner of the screen
and double tap. The Mail app will appear in the search results. It was the
second item in my results and Voiceover will announce the word productivity
after saying Mail and then announce two and a half stars. To the right of the
Mail title will either be an Open button which you can execute if the app is
still installed correctly on your iPhone or a Get or re-download button if it's
not.

Good luck.

Subject: The Native Mail App

For some reason, I have lost the native mail app on my iPhone 12 pro Max. I can
get siri to open it but with some type of error message.

I've looked for the app in the Store but can't find it. How do I bring this
back and how can I make sure that it is on the home page?

Thanks as always.

Re: Can anyone send me a list of idiot-proof instructions for the gestures I need to know for an IPhone with no physical home button please?

2022-01-01 Thread Lynn Schneider
I am resending this message from Richard because it saved my bacon while I was
trying to learn the gestures without the home button on my new iPhone 13 Pro.
Since many of us may have gotten new phones without the old faithful home
button over the holidays, thought I would re-post. Thanks Richard.

Re: Face ID Revisited

2022-01-01 Thread Cris Ali
True, except that if the sighted person knows how to turn voice over off with
the side button three clicks, or familiar with the ability of siri to turn
voice over on or off, the screen curtain becomes useless. Even with the screen
curtain on, the minute you turn voice over off, the screen immediately lights
up.

Thanks much, Lynn.

It, indeed, is a big consolation and great commiseration to know that you are
not alone suffering this…….*smile). I find the keypad with relative ease.

How do you go to homepage once the phone is unlocked?

Fazil, if it is any consolation, I am having the same struggle with face ID. I
have mastered the gestures to get to things without the home button, but face
ID continues to bedevil me. Interestingly, sometimes it will work with no
problem and I have no idea why, but mostly, I cannot unlock my phone using my
face. I have attention turned off and like you, I have successfully gone
through the training exercise multiple times, with and without sighted help,
which ends with a message that face ID was successfully set up, but for reasons
I can’t understand, mostly it does not work. I have only had the phone for 3
days and I know that other blind people out there with prosthetic eyes are
doing face ID successfully, so I refuse to give up, but I admit it is quite
frustrating since I love everything else about my 13 Pro. I have even reset the
face ID several times in different light and dark situations, with and without
sighted help, and even set up an alternate face, but still no joy. Also, it is
very hard to get the keypad to come up to enter the passcode. You will have to
learn the new gestures for getting to the home screen, control center, app
switcher, etc., but I did not find that very difficult after practice. I know
that I have to embrace change and except new things, and again, I like this
bigger phone and I love the battery life compared to my iPhone 8, so I don’t
want to go back to that phone again, but I hate using a passcode to
authenticate, so I am really hoping that I can get this worked out. I wish us
both patience and good luck. LOL.

not, it works. It does have to align with the face though.

LOL.

Any more tips to unlock phone with face id is much appreciated.

It, indeed, is a big consolation and great commiseration to know that you are

Fázil, just keep trying my friend. I think you either have it tipped
back too far or you’re not putting it at the right distance from your face. If
you have attention turned off it’s just a matter of putting it just about 10
inches from your face. I had a terrible time at the beginning. Sometimes I
still have trouble, but it really does work. It’s just that you have to
practice it. It’s just like those little blimps on the bottom and the top. It

You punch in your numbers you set for the passcode. I have a six number code;
my husband just has four on his tablet.

Fázil, just keep trying my friend. I think you either have it tipped
back too far or you’re not putting it at the right distance from your face. If
you have attention turned off it’s just a matter of putting it just about 10
inches from your face. I had a terrible time at the beginning. Sometimes I

But to each his
own.

Fázil, just keep trying my friend. I think you either have it tipped back too
far or you’re not putting it at the right distance from your face. If you have
attention turned off it’s just a matter of putting it just about 10 inches from
your face. I had a terrible time at the beginning. Sometimes I still have
trouble, but it really does work. It’s just that you have to practice it. It’s
just like those little blimps on the bottom and the top. It takes time to get
used to doing it. It takes practice to do it properly. It will come, and then
you’ll feel just as comfortable with Face ID as you did with the home button.
Hang in there. happy new year to you and to everyone!

Re: Bluetooth Headset recommendation

2022-01-01 Thread Andy Baracco
The Aftershokz products have improved greatly since they were first released.
They used to be made of a cheap plastic that would easily break. Also, there
was a great deal of audio leakage. I recall sitting next to someoen on a bus
and he was singing along with my music.
The new Trekz line is coated with a rubbery material which is very flexible.
The audio leakage problem has improved greatly. i think that music sounds good
on them if you are willing to deal with the vibration against your cheeks.

I too would recommend Aftershokz. The audio is fine for voice, but some
may find them a bit lacking for high fidelity sound. I haven’t gotten any
complaints from the people I call, so I assume the audio on their end is
adequate.

2022-01-01 Thread mich verrier

By the time I pulled the trigger I was using a
device I was pretty unhappy with and that hadn't been getting IOS updates for a
while.

True, and a very good point. This is why I don't presume to tell people what
they should or shouldn't do and whether a particular product is worth the money
or not. In addition to not knowing what other people's financial situation is,
I also don't know how important different features are to someone and how much
they're willing to pay for it.

I like the Sony WH1000XM4. It is very comfortable. Has great sound. Normally
retails for $349 US. However, I got a Black Friday deal for two of them for my
wife and I. They were $100 off for several weeks over the holidays.

True, everything will be better in a year or two but then that's a year or two

by will be better in a year or two.
A good example would be the Airpods, if I wanted to buy a set I'd much rather
buy them now than when they first came out 4 or whatever years ago because I
know I'd be replacing them by now.

Re: Bluetooth Headset recommendation

2022-01-01 Thread Marco Curralejo
They are not meant to be for music. I'm not sure why it some people don't
get this.

I too would recommend Aftershokz. The audio is fine for voice, but some may
find them a bit lacking for high fidelity sound. I haven’t gotten any
complaints from the people I call, so I assume the audio on their end is
adequate.

I would highly recommend the aftershocks opencom headphones which have an
excellent microphone and decent enough sound.

I use the Aftershokz Bluetooth bone conduction wireless headset. I have an
iPhone 7 Plus, and it pairs with it very very well. Hope this helps.

I am in the market for a Bluetooth earbud headset for my iPhone. I am
interested in some recommendation based on personal experience.

I am looking for a set of earbuds that is around the neck style, easy to
use, has very good battery life, has decent sounds quality and can be used
for making and receiving phone calls. I looked at the reviews of headsets
on Amazon and I would like to get the purchase right the first time.

I had a set of Beats and was not impressed with the battery life. It
seamed that it would only last a few hours and it was more of a pain in the
neck then it was worth. I had a set of LG 780, that had great battery
life, but device was not usable making and receiving phone calls. I have
tried Air Buds, but the battery life is too short and I am concerned about
misplacing them to easily.

Thanks in advance,
Mario
